Beforeyouopenthecomputercover,turnoffthecomputerandwaitseveralminutesuntilthe
computeriscool.
Staticelectricityprevention
Staticelectricit,althoughharmlesstoou,canseriousldamagecomputercomponentsandoptions.
Improperhandlingofstatic-sensitivepartscandamagethepart.WhenouunpackanoptionorCRU,do
notopenthestatic-protectivepackagecontainingthepartuntiltheinstructionsdirectoutoinstallit.
WhenouhandleoptionsorCRUs,orperformanworkinsidethecomputer,takethefollowingprecautions
toavoidstatic-electricitdamage:
•Limitourmovement.Movementcancausestaticelectricittobuilduparoundou.
•Alwashandlecomponentscarefull.Handleadapters,memormodules,andothercircuitboardsbthe
edges.Nevertouchexposedcircuitr.
•Preventothersfromtouchingcomponents.
•Whenouinstallastatic-sensitiveoptionorCRU,touchthestatic-protectivepackagecontainingthe
parttoametalexpansion-slotcoverorotherunpaintedmetalsurfaceonthecomputerforatleasttwo
seconds.Thisreducesstaticelectricitinthepackageandourbod.
•Whenpossible,removethestatic-sensitivepartfromthestatic-protectivepackagingandinstallthepart
withoutsettingitdown.Whenthisisnotpossible,placethestatic-protectivepackagingonasmooth,
levelsurfaceandplacethepartonit.
•Donotplacethepartonthecomputercoverorothermetalsurface.
Powercordsandpoweradapters
Useonlthepowercordsandpoweradapterssuppliedbtheproductmanufacturer.Donotusetheac
powercordforotherdevices.
Thepowercordsshallbesafetapproved.ForGerman,itshallbeH05VV-F,3G,0.75mm2,orbetter.For
othercountries,thesuitabletpesshallbeusedaccordingl.
Neverwrapapowercordaroundapoweradapterorotherobject.Doingsocanstressthecordinwasthat
cancausethecordtofra,crack,orcrimp.Thiscanpresentasafethazard.
Alwasroutepowercordssothatthewillnotbewalkedon,trippedover,orpinchedbobjects.
Protectpowercordandpoweradaptersfromliquids.Forinstance,donotleaveourpowercordorpower
adapternearsinks,tubs,toilets,oronfloorsthatarecleanedwithliquidcleansers.Liquidscancausea
shortcircuit,particularlifthepowercordorpoweradapterhasbeenstressedbmisuse.Liquidsalsocan
causegradualcorrosionofpowercordterminalsand/ortheconnectorterminalsonapoweradapter,
whichcaneventuallresultinoverheating.
Ensurethatallpowercordconnectorsaresecurelandcompletelpluggedintoreceptacles.
Donotuseanpoweradapterthatshowscorrosionattheacinputpinsorshowssignsofoverheating(such
asdeformedplastic)attheacinputoranwhereonthepoweradapter.
Donotuseanpowercordswheretheelectricalcontactsoneitherendshowsignsofcorrosionor
overheatingorwherethepowercordappearstohavebeendamagedinanwa.

Extensioncordsandrelateddevices
Ensurethatextensioncords,surgeprotectors,uninterruptiblepowersupplies,andpowerstripsthatouuse
areratedtohandletheelectricalrequirementsoftheproduct.Neveroverloadthesedevices.Ifpowerstrips
areused,theloadshouldnotexceedthepowerstripinputrating.Consultanelectricianformoreinformation
ifouhavequestionsaboutpowerloads,powerrequirements,andinputratings.
Plugsandoutlets
Ifareceptacle(poweroutlet)thatouintendtousewithourcomputerequipmentappearstobedamaged
orcorroded,donotusetheoutletuntilitisreplacedbaqualifiedelectrician.
Donotbendormodiftheplug.Iftheplugisdamaged,contactthemanufacturertoobtainareplacement.
Donotshareanelectricaloutletwithotherhomeorcommercialappliancesthatdrawlargeamountsof
electricit.Otherwise,unstablevoltagemightdamageourcomputer,data,orconnecteddevices.
Someproductsareequippedwithathree-prongedplug.Thisplugfitsonlintoagroundedelectricaloutlet.
Thisisasafetfeature.Donotdefeatthissafetfeaturebtringtoinsertitintoanon-groundedoutlet.If
oucannotinserttheplugintotheoutlet,contactanelectricianforanapprovedoutletadapterortoreplace
theoutletwithonethatenablesthissafetfeature.Neveroverloadanelectricaloutlet.Theoverallsstem
loadshouldnotexceed80percentofthebranchcircuitrating.Consultanelectricianformoreinformation
ifouhavequestionsaboutpowerloadsandbranchcircuitratings.
Besurethatthepoweroutletouareusingisproperlwired,easilaccessible,andlocatedclosetothe
equipment.Donotfullextendpowercordsinawathatwillstressthecords.
Besurethatthepoweroutletprovidesthecorrectvoltageandcurrentfortheproductouareinstalling.
Carefullconnectanddisconnecttheequipmentfromtheelectricaloutlet.
Externaldevices
DonotconnectordisconnectanexternaldevicecablesotherthanUniversalSerialBus(USB)cableswhile
thecomputerpowerison;otherwise,oumightdamageourcomputer.Toavoidpossibledamageto
connecteddevices,waitatleastfivesecondsafterthecomputerisshutdowntodisconnectexternaldevices.
Heatandproductventilation
Computers,poweradapters,andmanaccessoriescangenerateheatwhenturnedonandwhenbatteries
arecharging.Alwasfollowthesebasicprecautions:
•Donotleaveourcomputer,poweradapter,oraccessoriesincontactwithourlaporanpartofour
bodforanextendedperiodwhentheproductsarefunctioningorwhenthebatterischarging.Your
computer,poweradapter,andmanaccessoriesproducesomeheatduringnormaloperation.Extended
contactwiththebodcouldcausediscomfortor,potentiall,askinburn.
•Donotchargethebatteroroperateourcomputer,poweradapter,oraccessoriesnearflammable
materialsorinexplosiveenvironments.
•Ventilationslots,fans,andheatsinksareprovidedwiththeproductforsafet,comfort,andreliable
operation.Thesefeaturesmightinadvertentlbecomeblockedbplacingtheproductonabed,sofa,
carpet,orotherflexiblesurface.Neverblock,cover,ordisablethesefeatures.

Inspectourdesktopcomputerfordustaccumulationatleastonceeverthreemonths.Beforeinspecting
ourcomputer,turnoffthepowerandunplugthecomputer'spowercordfromtheelectricaloutlet;then
removeandustfromventsandperforationsinthebezel.Ifounoticeexternaldustaccumulation,then
examineandremovedustfromtheinsideofthecomputerincludingheatsinkinletfins,powersupplvents,
andfans.Alwasturnoffandunplugthecomputerbeforeopeningthecover.Ifpossible,avoidoperating
ourcomputerwithintwofeetofhigh-trafficareas.Ifoumustoperateourcomputerinornearahigh-traffic
area,inspectand,ifnecessar,cleanourcomputermorefrequentl.
Foroursafetandtomaintainoptimumcomputerperformance,alwasfollowthesebasicprecautions
withourdesktopcomputer:
•Keepthecoverclosedwheneverthecomputerispluggedin.
•Regularlinspecttheoutsideofthecomputerfordustaccumulation.
•Removedustfromventsandanperforationsinthebezel.Morefrequentcleaningsmightberequiredfor
computersindustorhigh-trafficareas.
•Donotrestrictorblockanventilationopenings.
•Donotstoreoroperateourcomputerinsidefurniture,asthismightincreasetheriskofoverheating.
•Airflowtemperaturesintothecomputershouldnotexceed35°C(95°F).
•Donotinstallairfiltrationdevices.Themainterferewithpropercooling.
Operatingenvironment
Theoptimalenvironmentinwhichtouseourcomputeris10°C–35°C(50°F–95°F)withhumiditranging
between35%and80%.Ifourcomputerisstoredortransportedintemperatureslessthan10°C(50°F),
allowthecoldcomputertoriseslowltoanoptimaloperatingtemperatureof10°C–35°C(50°F–95°F)before
use.Thisprocesscouldtaketwohoursinextremeconditions.Failuretoallowourcomputertorisetoan
optimaloperatingtemperaturebeforeusecouldresultinirreparabledamagetoourcomputer.
Ifpossible,placeourcomputerinawell-ventilatedanddrareawithoutdirectexposuretosunshine.
Keepelectricalappliancessuchasanelectricfan,radio,high-poweredspeakers,airconditioner,and
microwaveovenawafromourcomputerbecausethestrongmagneticfieldsgeneratedbthese
appliancescandamagethemonitoranddataonthestoragedrive.
Donotplaceanbeveragesontopoforbesidethecomputerorotherconnecteddevices.Ifliquidisspilled
onorinthecomputeroraconnecteddevice,ashortcircuitorotherdamagemightoccur.
Donoteatorsmokeoverourkeboard.Particlesthatfallintoourkeboardcancausedamage.
