Note: An appropriate adapter may be needed for connecting externa devices.
3. USB 2.0 connectors (2) Connect USB-compatib e devices, such as a USB keyboard, USB mouse, USB
storage device, or USB printer.
4. Ethernet connector
Connect to a oca area network (LAN). When the green indicator is on, the
computer is connected to a LAN. When the ye ow indicator b inks, data is being
transmitted.
5. Audio connectors
Send audio signa s from the computer to externa devices, such as powered
stereo speakers, headphones, or mu timedia keyboards. To connect a stereo
system or other externa recording device, connect a cab e between the audio ine-
in connector of the device and the audio ine-out connector of the computer.
Note: If your computer has both an audio ine-out connector and a headset or
headphone connector, a ways use the headset or headphone connector for
earphones, headphones, or a headset. The headphone connector does not
support headset microphones.
6. PCI-Express card area Insta PCI-Express cards into this area to improve the operating performance of
the computer. Depending on the computer mode , the connectors in this area vary.
7. Security- ock s ot Lock your computer to a desk, tab e, or other fixtures using a Kensington-sty e
cab e ock.
8. Power cord connector Connect the power cord to your computer for power supp y.

Chapter 2. Get started with your co puter
Get started with Windows 10
Learn the basics of Windows 10 and start working with it right away. For more information about Windows
10, see the Windows he p information.
Windows account
A user account is required to use the Windows operating system. It can either be a Windows user account or
a Microsoft account.
Windows user account
When you start Windows for the first time, you are prompted to create a Windows user account. This first
account you created is of the “Administrator” type. With an Administrator account, you can create additiona
user accounts or change account types by doing the fo owing:
1. Open the Start menu and se ect Settings ➙ Accounts ➙ Fa ily & other users.
2. Fo ow the on-screen instructions.
Microsoft account
You can a so og in to the Windows operating system with a Microsoft account.
To create a Microsoft account, go to the Microsoft sign-up page at https://signup. ive.com and fo ow the on-
screen instructions.
With a Microsoft account, you can:
• Enjoy one-time signing in if you are using other Microsoft services, such as OneDrive, Skype, and Out ook.
com.
• Sync persona ized settings across other Windows-based devices.

Windows user interface
1. Account Change account settings, ock the computer, or sign out from the current account.
2. Docu ents Open the Docu ents fo der, a defau t fo der to save your received fi es.
3. Pictures Open the Pictures fo der, a defau t fo der to save your received pictures.
4. Settings Launch Settings.
5. Power Shut down, restart, or put the computer into s eep mode.
6. Start button Open the Start menu.
7. Windows Search Type what you are ooking for in the search box and get search resu ts from your
computer and the Web.

10. Battery status icon Disp ay power status and change battery or power settings. When your computer
is not connected to ac power, the icon changes to .

connected to a wired network, the icon changes to .
12. Action center Disp ay the atest notifications from apps and provide quick access to some
features.

Connect to networks
Your computer he ps you connect to the wor d through a wired or wire ess network.
Connect to the wired Ethernet
Connect your computer to a oca network through the Ethernet connector on your computer with an
Ethernet cab e.
Connect to Wi-Fi networks
1. C ick the network icon in the Windows notification area. A ist of avai ab e wire ess networks is disp ayed.
2. Se ect a network avai ab e for connection. Provide required information, if needed.
Use Lenovo Vantage
The preinsta ed Lenovo Vantage is a customized one-stop so ution to he p you maintain your computer with
automated updates and fixes, configure hardware settings, and get persona ized support.
Access Lenovo Vantage
Open the Start menu and c ick Lenovo Vantage. You a so can type Lenovo Vantage in the search box.
To down oad the atest version of Lenovo Vantage, go to Microsoft Store and search by the app name.

Lenovo Vantage enab es you to:
• Know the device status easi y and customize device settings.
• Down oad and insta UEFI BIOS, firmware and driver updates to keep your computer up-to-date.

Use ulti edia
Use your computer for business or entertainment with the devices (such as a camera, a monitor, or
speakers).
Use audio
To enhance the audio experience, connect speakers, headphones, or a headset to the audio connector.
Adjust the volu e
1. C ick the vo ume icon in the Windows notification area on the taskbar.
2. Fo ow the on-screen instructions to adjust the vo ume. C ick the speaker icon to mute the audio.
Change the sound settings
1. Go to Control Panel and view by category.
2. C ick Hardware and Sound ➙ Sound.
3. Change the settings as you prefer.

Manage power
Use the information in this section to achieve the best ba ance between performance and power efficiency.
Set power button behaviors
You can define what the power button does according to your preference. For examp e, by pressing the
power button, you can turn off the computer or put the computer to s eep or hibernation mode.
To change what the power button does:
1. Go to Control Panel and view by arge icons or sma icons.
2. C ick Power Options ➙ Choose what the power buttons do.
3. Change the settings as you prefer.
Set the power plan
For ENERGY STAR® comp iant computers, the fo owing power p an takes effect when your computers have
been id e for a specified duration:

• Turn off the disp ay: After 10 minutes
• Put the computer to s eep: After 25 minutes
To awaken the computer from S eep mode, press any key on your keyboard.
To reset the power p an to achieve the best ba ance between performance and power saving:
1. Go to Control Panel and view by arge icons or sma icons.
2. C ick Power Options, and then choose or customize a power p an of your preference.
Transfer data
Quick y share your fi es using the bui t-in B uetooth techno ogy among devices with the same features. You
a so can insta a disc or media card to transfer data.
Connect to a Bluetooth-enabled device (for selected odels)
You can connect a types of B uetooth-enab ed devices to your computer, such as a keyboard, a mouse, a
smartphone, or speakers. To ensure that the connection is successfu , p ace the devices 10 meters (33 feet),
at most, from the computer.
1. Turn on B uetooth on the computer.
a. Open the Start menu, and then c ick Settings ➙ Devices ➙ Bluetooth & other devices.
b. Turn on the Bluetooth switch.
2. C ick Add Bluetooth or other device ➙ Bluetooth.
3. Se ect a B uetooth device, and then fo ow the on-screen instructions.

Your B uetooth device and computer wi automatica y connect the next time if the two devices are in range
of each other with B uetooth turned on. You can use B uetooth for data transfer or remote contro and
communication.
Lock the co puter
Note: You are responsib e for eva uating, se ecting, and imp ementing the ocking device and security

Kensington-style cable lock
Lock your computer to a desk, tab e, or other fixtures through a Kensington-sty e cab e ock.

computer. Options inc ude memory modu es, storage devices, network cards, power adapters, keyboards,

Chapter 4. Troubleshooting, diagnostics, and recovery
This chapter provides so utions to reso ve computer prob ems. Use the basic procedure as a starting point
for reso ving computer prob ems.
Basic procedure for resolving co puter proble s
Prerequisite
Before you start, read Appendix A “Important safety information” on page 41 and print the fo owing
instructions.
1. Check that:
a. The cab es for a connected devices are connected correct y and secure y.
b. A components have been reassemb ed correct y.
c. A connected devices that require ac power are connected to proper y grounded and working
e ectrica out ets.
d. A connected devices are enab ed in UEFI BIOS.
2. Use an antivirus program to see if the computer has been infected by a virus. If the program detects a
virus, remove the virus.
3. Go to “Troub eshooting” on page 11 and fo ow the instructions for the type of prob em you are
experiencing.
4. Recover your operating system. See “Recovery” on page 17.
5. If the prob em persists, contact Lenovo. See Chapter 6 “He p and support” on page 37.
Troubleshooting
Use the troub eshooting information to find so utions to prob ems that have definite symptoms.

Startup proble s
Proble Solution
The computer does not start up when you
press the power button.
• Ensure that the power cord is correct y connected to the rear of the
computer and to a working e ectrica out et.
• If the computer has a secondary power switch on the rear of the
computer, ensure that it is switched on.
• The power indicator on the front of the computer is on.
• The computer vo tage matches the vo tage avai ab e at the
e ectrica out et for your country or region.
The operating system does not start up from
the correct storage drive or fai s to start up
• Ensure that a storage drive signa cab es and power cab es are
connected correct y.
• Ensure that the storage drive the computer starts up from is isted
as the first startup device in UEFI BIOS.
• In rare cases, the storage drive with the operating system might get
corrupted or damaged. In such cases, you might need to rep ace
the storage drive.
• If the computer is insta ed with an Optane memory:
– Ensure that the Optane memory is not removed.
– Ensure that the Optane memory is not damaged. Check the
Optane memory using diagnostic too s.
The computer beeps mu tip e times before
the operating system starts up. Ensure that no keys are stuck.

Audio proble s
Proble Solution
The audio cannot be heard on the Windows
operating system.
• If you are using powered externa speakers that have an On/Off
contro , ensure that:
– The On/Off contro is set to the On position.
– The speaker power cab e is connected to a proper y grounded,
functiona ac e ectrica out et.
• If your externa speakers have a vo ume contro , ensure that the
vo ume is not set too ow.
• C ick the vo ume icon in the Windows notification area on the
taskbar. Check the speaker and vo ume settings. Do not mute the
speaker or set the vo ume at a very ow eve .
• If your computer has a front audio pane , ensure that the vo ume is
not set too ow.
• Ensure that your externa speakers (and headphones, if used) are
connected to the correct audio connector on the computer. Most
speaker cab es are co or-coded to match the audio connector.
Note: When externa -speaker or headphone cab es are connected
to the audio connector, the interna speaker, if present, is disab ed.
In most cases, if an audio adapter is insta ed in one of the
expansion s ots, the audio function bui t into the system board is
disab ed. Therefore, you must use the audio connectors on the
audio adapter.
• Ensure that the program you are running is designed for use in the
Microsoft Windows operating system. If the program is designed to
run in DOS, the program does not use the Windows sound feature.
The program must be configured to use SoundB aster Pro or
SoundB aster emu ation.
• Ensure that the audio device drivers are correct y insta ed.
The sound does not come from the headset
or headphones.
Se ect the headset or headphones as the defau t audio output device
in advanced sound settings.
The sound comes from one of the externa
speakers.
• Ensure that the speaker cab e is inserted comp ete y into the
connector on the computer.
• Ensure that the cab e that connects the eft speaker to the right
speaker is secure y connected.
• Ensure that the ba ance settings are set correct y.
1. Right-c ick the vo ume icon in the Windows notification area
on the taskbar. Then, c ick Open Volu e Mixer and se ect the
desired speaker.
2. C ick the speaker icon on top of the vo ume contro , and then
c ick the Levels tab.

Proble Solution
The computer cannot connect to an Ethernet
LAN.
• Connect the cab e from the Ethernet connector to the RJ45
connector of the hub.
• Enab e the Ethernet LAN feature in UEFI BIOS.
• Enab e the Ethernet LAN adapter.
1. Go to Control Panel and view by arge icons or sma icons.
2. C ick Network and Sharing Center ➙ Change adapter
settings.
3. Right-c ick the Ethernet LAN adapter icon and c ick Enable.
• Update or reinsta the Ethernet LAN driver.
• Insta a networking software that is necessary for your network
environment. Check with your LAN administrator for the necessary
networking software.
• Set the same dup ex for the switch port and the adapter. If you
configured the adapter for fu dup ex, ensure that the switch port is
a so configured for fu dup ex. Setting a wrong dup ex mode might
degrade performance, cause data oss, or resu t in ost
connections.
When a Gigabit Ethernet mode computer is
used at a speed of 1000 Mbps, the Ethernet
LAN connection fai s or errors occur.
Connect the network cab e to the Ethernet connector using Category
5 wiring and a 100 BASE-T hub/switch (not 100 BASE-X).
The Wake On LAN (WOL) feature does not
work. Enab e the Wake On LAN feature in UEFI BIOS.
The Wi-Fi feature does not work.
• Enab e the Wi-Fi feature in UEFI BIOS.
• Enab e a Wi-Fi devices.
1. Right-c ick the Start button to open the Start context menu.
2. C ick Device Manager. Type the administrator password or
provide confirmation, if prompted.
3. Expand Network adapters to disp ay a network devices.
4. Right-c ick each Wi-Fi device, and then c ick Enable device.

2. C ick Settings ➙ Network & Internet ➙ Wi-Fi.
