Guidelines for trained technicians
Thi ection contain information for trained technician .
Inspecting for unsafe conditions
U e thi information to help you identify potential un afe condition in an IBM product that you are working
on.
Each IBM product, a it wa de igned and manufactured, ha required afety item to protect u er and
ervice technician from injury. The information in thi ection addre e only tho e item . U e good
judgment to identify potential un afe condition that might be cau ed by non-IBM alteration or attachment
of non-IBM feature or optional device that are not addre ed in thi ection. If you identify an un afe
condition, you mu t determine how eriou the hazard i and whether you mu t correct the problem before
you work on the product.
Con ider the following condition and the afety hazard that they pre ent:
• Electrical hazard , e pecially primary power. Primary voltage on the frame can cau e eriou or fatal
electrical hock.
• Explo ive hazard , uch a a damaged CRT face or a bulging capacitor.
• Mechanical hazard , uch a loo e or mi ing hardware.
To in pect the product for potential un afe condition , complete the following tep :
1. Make ure that the power i off and the power cord are di connected.
2. Make ure that the exterior cover i not damaged, loo e, or broken, and ob erve any harp edge .
3. Check the power cord :
• Make ure that the third-wire ground connector i in good condition. U e a meter to mea ure third-
wire ground continuity for 0.1 ohm or le between the external ground pin and the frame ground.
• Make ure that the power cord are the correct type.
• Make ure that the in ulation i not frayed or worn.

4. Remove the cover.
5. Check for any obviou non-IBM alteration . U e good judgment a to the afety of any non-IBM
alteration .
6. Check in ide the y tem for any obviou un afe condition , uch a metal filing , contamination, water
or other liquid, or ign of fire or moke damage.
7. Check for worn, frayed, or pinched cable .
8. Make ure that the power- upply cover fa tener ( crew or rivet ) have not been removed or tampered
with.
Guidelines for servicing electrical equipment
Ob erve the e guideline when you ervice electrical equipment.
• Check the area for electrical hazard uch a moi t floor , nongrounded power exten ion cord , and
mi ing afety ground .
• U e only approved tool and te t equipment. Some hand tool have handle that are covered with a oft
material that doe not provide in ulation from live electrical current.
• Regularly in pect and maintain your electrical hand tool for afe operational condition. Do not u e worn
or broken tool or te ter .
• Do not touch the reflective urface of a dental mirror to a live electrical circuit. The urface i conductive
and can cau e per onal injury or equipment damage if it touche a live electrical circuit.
• Some rubber floor mat contain mall conductive fiber to decrea e electro tatic di charge. Do not u e
thi type of mat to protect your elf from electrical hock.
• Do not work alone under hazardou condition or near equipment that ha hazardou voltage .
• Locate the emergency power-off (EPO) witch, di connecting witch, or electrical outlet o that you can
turn off the power quickly in the event of an electrical accident.
• Di connect all power before you perform a mechanical in pection, work near power upplie , or remove
or in tall main unit .
• Before you work on the equipment, di connect the power cord. If you cannot di connect the power cord,
have the cu tomer power-off the wall box that upplie power to the equipment and lock the wall box in
the off po ition.
• Never a ume that power ha been di connected from a circuit. Check it to make ure that it ha been
di connected.
• If you have to work on equipment that ha expo ed electrical circuit , ob erve the following precaution :
– Make ure that another per on who i familiar with the power-off control i near you and i available to
turn off the power if nece ary.
– When you work with powered-on electrical equipment, u e only one hand. Keep the other hand in your
pocket or behind your back to avoid creating a complete circuit that could cau e an electrical hock.
– When you u e a te ter, et the control correctly and u e the approved probe lead and acce orie for
that te ter.
– Stand on a uitable rubber mat to in ulate you from ground uch a metal floor trip and equipment
frame .
• U e extreme care when you mea ure high voltage .
• To en ure proper grounding of component uch a power upplie , pump , blower , fan , and motor
generator , do not ervice the e component out ide of their normal operating location .
• If an electrical accident occur , u e caution, turn off the power, and end another per on to get medical
aid.

Statement 1
DANGER
Electrical current from power, telephone, and communication cables is hazardous.
To avoid a shock hazard:
• Do not connect or disconnect any cables or perform installation, maintenance, or reconfiguration
of this product during an electrical storm.
• Connect all power cords to a properly wired and grounded electrical outlet.
• Connect to properly wired outlets any equipment that will be attached to this product.
• When possible, use one hand only to connect or disconnect signal cables.
• Never turn on any equipment when there is evidence of fire, water, or structural damage.
• Disconnect the attached power cords, telecommunications systems, networks, and modems
before you open the device covers, unless instructed otherwise in the installation and
configuration procedures.
• Connect and disconnect cables as described in the following table when installing, moving, or
opening covers on this product or attached devices.

Statement 2
CAUTION:
When replacing the lithium battery, use only IBM Part Number 33F8354 or an equivalent type battery
recommended by the manufacturer. If your system has a module containing a lithium battery, replace
it only with the same module type made by the same manufacturer. The battery contains lithium and
can explode if not properly used, handled, or disposed of.
Do not:
• Throw or immerse into water
• Heat to more than 1 °C (212°F)
• Repair or disassemble
Dispose of the battery as required by local ordinances or regulations.
Statement 3
CAUTION:
When laser products (such as CD-ROMs, DVD drives, fiber optic devices, or transmitters) are
installed, note the following:
• Do not remove the covers. Removing the covers of the laser product could result in exposure to
hazardous laser radiation. There are no serviceable parts inside the device.
• Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures other than those specified herein
might result in hazardous radiation exposure.

Some laser products contain an embedded Class 3A or Class 3B laser diode. Note the following.

come with your operating y tem and oftware al o contain trouble hooting information.
Diagnosing a problem
Before you contact IBM or an approved warranty ervice provider, follow the e procedure in the order in
which they are pre ented to diagno e a problem with your blade erver.
Step 1. Determine what has changed.
Determine whether any of the following item were added, removed, replaced, or updated before
the problem occurred:
• Unified Exten ible Firmware Interface (UEFI) code
• Device driver
• Firmware
• Hardware component
• Software
If po ible, return the blade erver to the condition it wa in before the problem occurred.
Step 2. Collect data.
Thorough data collection i nece ary for diagno ing hardware and oftware problem .
Note: Event me age that include link to de cription and recommended action can be viewed
in the advanced management module event log ( ee the Advanced Mana ement Module User's
Guide for additional information). A li ting of all general event information i in the BladeCenter
Advanced Mana ement Module Messa es Guide.
a. Document error codes and light path diagnostics LEDs.
• System error codes: See “Event log ” on page 79 for information about a pecific error
code.
• Software or operating-system error codes: See the documentation for the oftware or
operating y tem for information about a pecific error code. See the manufacturer' Web
ite for documentation.
• Light path diagnostics LEDs: See “Light path diagno tic ” on page 204 for information
about LED that are lit.
b. Collect system data.

Run Dynamic Sy tem Analy i (DSA) to collect information about the hardware, firmware,
oftware, and operating y tem. Have thi information available when you contact IBM or an
approved warranty ervice provider. To download the late t ver ion of DSA, go to http://www.

c. Collect BladeCenter unit data.
Data about the BladeCenter unit i available through the Advanced-Management-Module Web
interface. Have thi information available when you contact IBM or an approved warranty
ervice provider. You can view the information or ave it a a compre ed package, named
Service Data, that you can tran fer to another y tem or provide to a ervice repre entative.

Step 3. Follow the problem-resolution procedures.
The four problem-re olution procedure are pre ented in the order in which they are mo t likely to
olve your problem. Follow the e procedure in the order in which they are pre ented:
1. Check for and apply code updates.
Mo t problem that appear to be cau ed by faulty hardware are actually cau ed by UEFI code,
y tem firmware, device firmware, or device driver that are not at the late t level .
a. Determine the existing code levels.
• In DSA, click Firmware/VPD to view y tem firmware level , or click Software to view
operating- y tem level .
• In the navigation pane of the Advanced-Management-Module Web interface, click
Monitors and click Firmware VPD to view the firmware level in the blade erver and
management module.
b. Download and install updates of code that is not at the latest level.

You can in tall code update that are packaged a an IBM UpdateXpress Sy tem Pack or
UpdateXpress CD image. An UpdateXpre Sy tem Pack contain an integration-te ted
bundle of online firmware and device-driver update for your blade erver.
Be ure to in tall any li ted critical update that have relea e date that are later than the
relea e date of the UpdateXpress Sy tem Pack or UpdateXpress image.
When you click an update, an information page i di played, including a li t of the problem
that the update fixe . Review thi li t for your pecific problem; however, even if your
problem i not li ted, in talling the update might olve the problem.
Step 4. Check for and correct an incorrect configuration.

If the blade erver i incorrectly configured, a y tem function can fail to work when you enable it; if
you make an incorrect change to the blade erver configuration, a y tem function that ha been
enabled can top working.
1. Make sure that all installed hardware and software are supported.

blade erver upport the in talled operating y tem, optional device , and oftware level . If
any hardware or oftware component i not upported, unin tall it to determine whether it i
cau ing the problem. You mu t remove non upported hardware before you contact IBM or an
approved warranty ervice provider for upport.
2. Make sure that the blade server, operating system, and software are installed and
configured correctly.
Many configuration problem are cau ed by loo e power or ignal cable or incorrectly eated
adapter . You might be able to olve the problem by turning off the blade erver, reconnecting
cable , re eating adapter , and turning the blade erver back on.
If the problem i a ociated with a pecific function (for example, if a RAID hard di k drive i
marked offline in the RAID array), ee the documentation for the a ociated controller and
management or controlling oftware to verify that the controller i correctly configured.

If the problem remain , contact IBM or an approved warranty ervice provider for a i tance with

Undocumented problems
If you have completed the diagno tic procedure and the problem remain , the problem might not have been
previou ly identified by IBM. After you have verified that all code i at the late t level, all hardware and
oftware configuration are valid, and no light path diagno tic LED or log entrie indicate a hardware
component failure, contact IBM or an approved warranty ervice provider for a i tance.

Power-on LED: Thi green LED indicate the power tatu of the blade erver in the following manner:
• Fla hing rapidly: While the ervice proce or in the blade erver i initializing and ynchronizing with the
management module, the power-on LED fla he rapidly, and the power-control button on the blade erver
doe not re pond. Thi proce can take approximately two minute after the blade erver ha been
in talled. If the LED continue to fla h rapidly, the blade erver might not have power permi ion
a igned to it through the Advanced Management Module (AMM), the BladeCenter unit doe not have
enough power to turn on the blade erver, or the ervice proce or (IMM2) on the blade erver i not
communicating with the AMM.
• Fla hing lowly: The blade erver ha power upplied and i ready to be turned on.
• Lit continuou ly: The blade erver ha power and i turned on.
Activity LED: When thi green LED i lit, it indicate that there i activity on the external torage device or
network.
