frominjury.Thisuideaddressesonlythoseitems.Youshoulduseoodjudmenttoidentifypotentialsafety
hazardsduetoattachmentofnon-ThinkServerfeaturesoroptionsnotcoveredbythisinspectionuide.
Ifanyunsafeconditionsarepresent,youmustdeterminehowserioustheapparenthazardcouldbeand
whetheryoucancontinuewithoutfirstcorrectintheproblem.
Considertheseconditionsandthesafetyhazardstheypresent:
•Electricalhazards,especiallyprimarypower(primaryvoltaeontheframecancauseseriousorfatal

Turningontheserver
Theservercanbeturnedoninoneofthefollowinways:
•Afteryoufinishunpackinandsettinuptheserver,connectittoanacpowersource.Pressthepower
buttononthefrontpaneltoturnontheserver.See“Frontpanel”onpae15.Theserverneedsabout90
secondsfortheThinkServerManaementModule(TMM,alsoknownasBMC)toinitializewheneveryou
connecttheservertoanacpowersource.Ifyoupressthepowerbuttononthefrontpaneldurinthis
period,theserverwillnotstartimmediately;itwillstartaftertheTMMinitializationfinishes.
•YoualsocanusetherelatedTMMfeaturetoturnontheserverremotelythrouhthemanaementLAN.

Turningofftheserver
AUTION:
Thepowercontrolbuttononthedeviceandthepowerswitchonthepowersupplydonotturnoff
theelectricalcurrentsuppliedtothedevice.Thedevicealsomighthavemorethanonepower
cord.Toremoveallelectricalcurrentfromthedevice,ensurethatallpowercordsaredisconnected
fromthepowersource.
Theservercanbeturnedoffinoneofthefollowinways:
•Turnofftheserverfromtheoperatinsystemifyouroperatinsystemsupportsthisfeature.Afteran
orderlyshutdownoftheoperatinsystem,theserverturnsoffautomatically.Forinstructionsonhow
toshutdownyourspecificoperatinsystem,refertotherelateddocumentationorhelpsystemfor
theoperatinsystem.
•Pressthepowerbuttononthefrontpaneltostartanorderlyshutdownoftheoperatinsystemandturn
offtheserver,ifyouroperatinsystemsupportsthisfeature.
•Ifyourserverstopsrespondinandyoucannotturnitoff,pressandholdthepowerbuttononthe
frontpanelforfoursecondsormore.Ifyoustillcannotturnofftheserver,disconnectallpowercords
fromtheserver.
•YoualsocanusetherelatedTMMfeaturetoremotelyturnofftheserverthrouhthemanaementLAN.
•Theservermihtturnoffasanautomaticresponsetoacriticalsystemfailure.
Notes:
•Whenyouturnofftheserverandleaveitconnectedtoanacpowersource,theserveralsocanrespond
toaremoterequesttoturnontheserver.Toremoveallpowerfromtheserver,youmustdisconnect
theserverfromtheacpowersource.
