Chapter 1 Introduction
The ThinkSystem™ SR645 server is a 2-so ket 1U server that features the new AMD® EPYCTM 7002 family
of pro essors. The server offers a broad sele tion of drive and slot onfigurations and offers high
performan e and expansion for various IT workloads. Combining performan e and flexibility, the server is a
great hoi e for enterprises of all sizes.
Performan e, ease of use, reliability, and expansion apabilities were key onsiderations in the design of the
server. These design features make it possible for you to ustomize the system hardware to meet your needs
today and provide flexible expansion apabilities for the future.

Identifying your server
When you onta t Lenovo for help, the ma hine type and serial number information helps support
te hni ians to identify your server and provide faster servi e.
The ma hine type and serial number are on the ID label on the right ra k lat h in the front of the server.

XClarity Controller network access label
The XClarity® Controller network a ess label is atta hed on the top side of the pull-out information tab as
shown. After you get the server, peel the XClarity Controller network a ess label away and store it in a safe
pla e for future use.

Quick response code

your server. These design features make it possible for you to ustomize the system hardware to meet your
needs today and provide flexible expansion apabilities for the future.
Your server implements the following features and te hnologies:
• Active Energy Manager
Lenovo XClarity Energy Manager is a power and temperature management solution for data enters.
Using Lenovo XClarity Energy Manager, you an monitor and manage the power onsumption and
temperature to improve energy effi ien y.
• Features on Demand
If a Features on Demand feature is integrated in the server or in an optional devi e that is installed in the
server, you an pur hase an a tivation key to a tivate the feature. For information about Features on

• Flexible network support

The server has an Open Compute Proje t (OCP) 3.0 slot for an OCP 3.0 Ethernet adapter, whi h provides
two or four network onne tors for network support.
• Integrated Trusted Platform Module (TPM)
This integrated se urity hip performs ryptographi fun tions and stores private and publi se ure keys.
It provides the hardware support for the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) spe ifi ation. You an
download the software to support the TCG spe ifi ation.
Trusted Platform Module (TPM) of version 2.0 is supported.
For more information on TPM onfigurations, see “Enable TPM” in the Maintenance Manual.
Note: For ustomers in Chinese Mainland, a Lenovo-qualified TPM 2.0 adapter (sometimes alled a
daughter ard) may be pre-installed.
• Large system-memory capacity
The server supports up to 32 TruDDR4 registered DIMMs (RDIMMs) or three-dimensional sta king
registered DIMMs (3DS RDIMMs). For more about the spe ifi types and maximum amount of memory,
see “Spe ifi ations” on page 5.
• Large data-storage capacity and hot-swap capability
Depending on different models, the server supports up to four 3.5-in h or ten 2.5-in h SAS/SATA/NVMe
on the front, up to two M.2 drives, and up to two 2.5-in h SAS/SATA/NVMe or two 7mm drives on the
rear.
With the hot-swap feature, you an add, remove, or repla e hard disk drives without turning off the server.
• Lenovo XClarity Controller (XCC)
The Lenovo XClarity Controller is the ommon management ontroller for Lenovo ThinkSystem server
hardware. It onsolidates multiple management fun tions in a single hip on the server system board.
Some of the features that are unique to the Lenovo XClarity Controller are enhan ed performan e, higher-
resolution remote video, and expanded se urity options. For additional information about the Lenovo

• Light path diagnostics
Light path diagnosti s provides LEDs to help you diagnose problems and an integrated LCD diagnosti s
panel or external diagnosti s handset an provide additional diagnosti information. For more information
about the light path diagnosti s, see the following:

• Mobile access to Lenovo Service Information website
The server provides a QR ode on the system servi e label, whi h is on the over of the server, that you
an s an using a QR ode reader and s anner with a mobile devi e to get qui k a ess to the Lenovo
Servi e Information website. The Lenovo Servi e Information website provides additional information for
parts installation, repla ement videos, and error odes for server support.
• Redundant networking connection
The Lenovo XClarity Controller provides failover apability to a redundant Ethernet onne tion with the
appli able appli ation installed. If a problem o urs with the primary Ethernet onne tion, all Ethernet
traffi that is asso iated with the primary onne tion is automati ally swit hed to the optional redundant

Ethernet onne tion. If the appli able devi e drivers are installed, this swit hing o urs without data loss
and without user intervention.
• Redundant cooling and optional power capabilities
The server supports a maximum of two 1100-watt hot-swap power supplies and two dual-motor non hot-
swap fans, whi h provide redundan y for a typi al onfiguration. The redundant ooling by the fans in the
server enables ontinued operation if one of the fans fails.
• ThinkSystem RAID support
The ThinkSystem RAID adapter provides hardware redundant array of independent disks (RAID) support
to reate onfigurations. The standard RAID adapter provides RAID levels 0 and 1. An optional RAID
adapter is available for pur hase.
• UEFI-compliant server firmware
Lenovo ThinkSystem firmware is Unified Extensible Firmware Interfa e (UEFI) 2.5 ompliant. UEFI
repla es BIOS and defines a standard interfa e between the operating system, platform firmware, and
external devi es.
Lenovo ThinkSystem servers are apable of booting UEFI- ompliant operating systems, BIOS-based
operating systems, and BIOS-based adapters as well as UEFI- ompliant adapters.
Note: The server does not support DOS (Disk Operating System).

Lenovo XClarity Energy Manager
Lenovo XClarity Energy Manager is a web-based power and temperature management solution designed for
data enter administrators. It monitors and manages the power onsumption and temperature of servers,
su h as Converged, NeXtS ale, System x, ThinkServer, and ThinkSystem servers, using the out-of-band
method. Lenovo XClarity Energy Manager models data enter physi al hierar hy and monitors power and
temperature at the server/group level. By analyzing monitored power and temperature data, Lenovo XClarity
Energy Manager greatly improves business ontinuity and energy effi ien y.

With Lenovo XClarity Energy Manager, administrators an take ontrol of power usage through improved
data analysis and lower the TCO (total ost of ownership). The tool optimizes data enter effi ien y by
allowing administrators to:
• Tra k platform power onsumption, inlet temperature, and omponent-level power onsumption, su h as
CPU and memory power onsumption.
• Visually he k the layout of room, row and ra k via 2D thermal map.
• Show events and send e-mail or SNMP trap notifi ations when ertain faults o ur or ertain thresholds
are rea hed.
• Optimize energy effi ien y by identifying hotspot or over- ooling servers to optimize ooling effi ien y
and identifying low-usage servers to save energy.

Lenovo XClarity Administrator is a entralized, resour e-management solution that simplifies infrastru ture
management, speeds responses, and enhan es the availability of Lenovo server systems and solutions. It
runs as a virtual applian e that automates dis overy, inventory, tra king, monitoring, and provisioning for
server, network, and storage hardware in a se ure environment.
Lenovo XClarity Administrator provides a entral interfa e to perform the following fun tions for all managed
endpoints:
• Manage and monitor hardware. Lenovo XClarity Administrator provides agent-free hardware
management. It an automati ally dis over manageable endpoints, in luding server, network, and storage
hardware. Inventory data is olle ted for managed endpoints for an at-a-glan e view of the managed
hardware inventory and status.
• Service and support. Lenovo XClarity Administrator an be set up to olle t and send diagnosti files
automati ally to your preferred servi e provider when ertain servi eable events o ur in Lenovo XClarity
Administrator and the managed endpoints. You an hoose to send diagnosti files to Lenovo Support
using Call Home or to another servi e provider using SFTP. You an also manually olle t diagnosti files,
open a problem re ord, and send diagnosti files to the Lenovo Support Center.
Lenovo XClarity Administrator an be integrated into external, higher-level management and automation
platforms through open REST appli ation programming interfa es (APIs). Using the REST APIs, Lenovo
XClarity Administrator an easily integrate with your existing management infrastru ture. In addition, you an
automate tasks using the PowerShell toolkit or the Python toolkit.

Lenovo XClarity Provisioning Manager V3
Lenovo XClarity Provisioning Manager V3 is embedded software that provides a graphi user interfa e (GUI)
for onfiguring the system with support for 11 languages. It simplifies the pro ess of onfiguring Basi Input
Output System (BIOS) settings and onfiguring Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) in an GUI
wizard. It also provides fun tions for updating appli ations and firmware, performing system diagnosti s,
and automating the pro ess of installing the supported Windows, Linux, or VMware ESXi operating systems
and asso iated devi e drivers.
Note: When you start a server and press F1, the Lenovo XClarity Provisioning Manager V3 interfa e is
displayed by default. However, the text-based interfa e to system onfiguration (the Setup Utility) is also
available. From Lenovo XClarity Provisioning Manager V3, you an hoose to restart the server and a ess
the text-based interfa e. In addition, you an hoose to make the text-based interfa e the default interfa e
that is displayed when you press F1.

Lenovo XClarity Provisioning Manager V3 provides a system summary of all installed devi es and in ludes
the following fun tions:
• UEFI setup. Use this fun tion to onfigure UEFI system settings, su h as pro essor onfiguration, start
options, and user se urity. You an also view POST events and the System Event Log (SEL).
• Firmware update. Use this fun tion to update the firmware for Lenovo XClarity Controller, Unified
Extensible Firmware Interfa e (UEFI), Lenovo XClarity Provisioning Manager V3, and operating system
devi e drivers.
• RAID setup. Use this fun tion to onfigure RAID for the server. It provides an easy-to-use graphi al
wizard that supports a unified pro ess for performing RAID setup for a variety of RAID adapters. You an
perform Simple RAID Setup and Advan ed RAID Setup in LXPM, also you an perform RAID onfiguration
for different RAID adapters from UEFI Setup.
• OS installation. Use this fun tion to deploy an operating system for the server with an easy-to-use
Guided Install mode. Operating systems an be installed using unattended mode after you hoose the
Operating System version and basi settings; the devi e drivers are installed automati ally.
A Manual Install mode is also available. You an export the drivers from system, manually install the
operating systems, and then install the drivers. This way, you do not need to go to the web to download
devi e drivers.
Note: In Guided Install mode, you an export the operating system installation settings to a response file
during operating system installation. Then, you an use the Import fun tion under the Cloning menu to
apply the operating system installation settings to the target server.
• Cloning. Use this fun tion to lone settings in one server to other similarly onfigured Lenovo servers.
– Export: Export UEFI, RAID, and BMC settings for the urrent server to files respe tively and save the
files to a USB storage drive or a shared network folder.
– Import: Apply UEFI, RAID, BMC, and operating system installation settings to the target server by
using the files you have saved.
• Diagnostics. Use this fun tion to view the overall health of devi es installed in the server and to perform
diagnosti s for hard disk drives and memory. You an also olle t servi e data that an be saved to a
USB devi e and sent to Lenovo Support.
Note: The servi e data olle ted by Lenovo XClarity Provisioning Manager V3 does not in lude the
operating system logs. To olle t the operating system logs and the hardware servi e data, use Lenovo
XClarity Essentials OneCLI.

Lenovo XClarity Controller
Lenovo XClarity Controller is the management pro essor for the server. It is the third generation of the
Integrated Management Module (IMM) servi e pro essor that onsolidates the servi e pro essor
fun tionality, super I/O, video ontroller, and remote presen e apabilities into a single hip on the server
system board.
There are two ways to a ess the management pro essor:
• Web-based interface. To a ess the web-based interfa e, point your browser to the IP address for the
management pro essor.
• Command-line interface. To a ess the CLI interfa e, use SSH or Telnet to log in to the management
pro essor.

Lenovo Capa ity Planner is a power onsumption evaluation tool that enhan es data enter planning by
enabling IT administrators and pre-sales to understand important parameters of different type of ra ks,
servers, and other devi es. Lenovo Capa ity Planner an dynami ally al ulate the power onsumption,
urrent, British Thermal Unit (BTU), and volt-ampere (VA) rating at the individual server or ra k level, and
therefore improves the effi ien y of large s ale deployments.
Lenovo Capa ity Planner provides the following fun tions:
• Power and thermal evaluation of servers and network devi es; generating evaluation reports.
• Customizable server onfiguration, workload, CPU turbo model, and fan speed for different user
