INSTALLATION
1. Leonard Nucleus Valves are factory pre-assembled and
tested and include digital mixing valve and controls
which function as a system to meet both high and low
demand for tempered water.
2. System should be installed at a location where it can
easily be cleaned, adjusted or repaired.
3. System supplies must be connected as shown (Hot-left,
Cold-right). Exercise caution when soldering.
4. Flush pipes thoroughly after system has been
connected.
5. This assembly MUST be piped according to
LEONARD’S REQUIRED PIPING METHOD W.
6. Refer to pages 2-4 of this bulletin for correct Setup
Instructions.

The Leonard Nucleus Digital Mixing Valve is an electronically controlled device utilizing DC
circuitry. The Green Wire Earth Ground Connector MUST be properly grounded to a nearby
suitable earth ground prior to connecting the Outlet RTD Probe, Motor Wiring Harness and
the Main Unit Power Supply. Installer must follow detailed instructions below to ensure
proper operation of valve.

1. TheNucleusUnitMUSTbepipedaccordingtoaLeonardRequiredPipingMethodW(see
page31).
2. Mountvalvebodyandplumbinletandoutletconnections.DONOTintroducewatertothe
valveuntilcompletionoftheseinstructions.
3. MountNucleusControlBoxtosuppliedMountingBracketandadjustthetuningscrewon
thebrackettodesiredposition.Ensureallwiringexitingtheboxisaccessible.
4. ConnectGreenWireEarthGroundConnectortosuitablenearbyearthgroundlocation.
5. Removecompressionfittingfromleftsideofthevalveoutlet.SlideRTDProbe#1through
thecompressionfittingandinsertintotheleftsideofthevalveoutlet.Tighten
compressionfittingbyhand,andthentightenjust1/8to1/4turn.DONOTovertighten
fitting.Seepage30formoredetail.
6. IfadditionalRDTprobesandpressuresensorsareincluded,installthemattheappropriate
locations.If‘IF‐RTS’optionisincluded,leaveprovisionsfortheRTDprobemarked
“RETURN”tobeinstalledonthetemperedreturnline(1/2”NPTConnection).Tighten
compressionfittingsbyhand,andthentightenjust1/8to1/4turn.DONOTovertighten
fittings.Seepage30formoredetail.Pluginpressuresensorharnessesintothepressure
sensors.
7. ConnectandtightenMotorWiringHarness,ifneeded.
8. Openallinletandoutletcheck‐stopsandballvalvestopressurizeNucleusvalve.
9. Plugpowersupplyinto110Vreceptacle.GFCIreceptaclesarerecommended.Installerto
followlocalelectricalcodes.
10. PoweringValveControlBoxwillcausethevalvemotortoinitiateaFULLVALVESWEEP
(EndtoEnd),indicatingthatthemotorhastraveled900‐1500Steps. FollowingtheFULL
SWEEP,thevalveisreadyforcommissioningandtheLEDScreenwilldisplaythefollowing:

TheNucleusDigitallyControlledMixingValveconsistsofanelectronicsboxthatissimplisticin
designandhasauserinterfacethatisintuitive.TheOverlaypicturedaboveisagraphical
representationofatypicalplumbingsystemwhereaDigitalThermostaticMixingValve
providesmixedhotwatertotheplumbingsystem.Atkeylocationsonthediagram,thereare
6LEDindicatorsthatprovidesystemstatuseither“withinrange”(Green)or“outofrange”
(Red)andtheyareasfollows:
Inlet Hot Water Pressure (P1), Inlet Hot Water Temperature (T1), Inlet Cold Water Pressure
(P2), Inlet Cold Water temperature (T2), Mixed Water Temperature Sensor (T3), and Return
Water Temperature Sensor (T4).

OnInitialPowerup,thevalvewillgothroughafullsweepfunction,whichmovesthemotorits
fulltravel,end‐to‐endofhotandcoldportsofthevalvebody.Thisprocessassignsa
numericalvaluetothedistancetravelledbythemotor,insteps,thatwillbeusedinfuture
comparisonstoindicateifthereisapotentialmaintenanceproblemorinternalmechanical
issuewiththecomponentsofthevalve.

temperatureonthemixedoutletofthevalve(T3)andshowssetpointtemperatureonthe
linebelow.Note:AlargenegativevaluedisplayedattheCurtemplineindicatesthesensoris
damagedornotproperlywiredtothemaincontrolboard.Temperatureiseasilyadjustedby
pressingtheENTER keyandpressingthe▲and▼keystoadjusttemperatureupordown.
Whendesiredvalueisreached,pressingtheENTERkeywillstorethenewsetpoint
temperaturethevalvewilltargetandamessagestatingthatthesetpointhasbeensavedwill

Beforeadisinfectioncycleisinitiated,theMIN andMAX settingsMUST bechangedtoaccommodate
higheroutlettemperatures.MIN settingshouldbesettotheminimumdesireddisinfection
temperature.MAX settingshouldbechangedtothemaximumdesireddisinfectiontemperature.After
thefirstminuteofdisinfection,anerrorwillbetriggerediftheoutlettemperatureisbelowtheMIN or
abovetheMAX settings,whichwillautomaticallyendthecycle.

startthetimer.Extremecaremustbetakenduringthedisinfectionprocess!Disinfectioncanbe
cancelledatanytimebypressingtheENTER Key.
