Introduction
This service training module, along with the product
specific service manual, can be used as an outline for
training on current Lexmark personal or desktop
printers.
Cross references to the service manual for new
products are placed at selected points throughout the
module lessons. The cross references let you view
parts, theory of operation, adjustments, and so on, at
the click of your mouse. When you have finished,
simply use your right mouse button to return to the
service training lesson.
The lessons in this course will be updated as
necessary to include new technology, or unique printer
mechanisms that may require specialty training.

Prerequisite
Lexmark service training courses are developed
assuming the student has these entry level skills:
• Capable of using common hand tools, such as
screwdrivers, nutdrivers, wrenches, in the
mechanical assembly and disassembly of non-
complex electronic equipment.
• Basic understanding of electricity including current,
voltage, and resistance.
• Use of an analog or digital multimeter in the
measure of voltage, current, and resistance.
• Understand the safe procedures relating to the
service of devices powered by AC line voltages.
• Ability to follow non-complex procedures (written
and graphic) to isolate product problems.
• Use of special tools and instructions (written and
graphic) in the adjustment of electro-mechanical
devices such as diskette drives and printers.
• Proper application of lubricants and cleaning
materials for electro-mechanical devices.
• Ability to type data on a keyboard.
• Ability to interpret data (audible and visual).
• Understand the safe use of hand tools and a
multimeter.
• General industry information, for example, A+
certification.

Materials Required
•One formatted student diskette to record each
technician’s course exam results. The diskette is
not provided, but student diskette labels are
enclosed. The mailing address and return
instructions are listed after successfully completing
the course exam.
•Service Manual for the product for which you want
to receive Lexmark certification. Service Manuals
are available on the Service Library CD. You may
want to print your own copy of a service manual
from the Service Information and Training CD, or
you may order books and other material from
Lexmark. To order material - call 1 - 800 - 553 -
9727 (U.S.)
During the course exam, you may use the service
manual to answer technical questions relating to meter
readings or connector and pin numbers.
You will be using the service manual extensively to
complete service training.
Please refer to the service manual as necessary for:
• Removal and replacement steps
• Diagnostic steps
• Parts Catalog (relationship of parts)
• Voltage or Ohms check
Refer to the service manual “Table of Contents” for
location of connectors and pin numbers.

•It is highly recommended, but not required, that
you have a training machine available for the
product for which you want to receive Lexmark
certification.
PC Hardware and Software
Minimum
• 486processor-based personal computer.
• Microsoft Windows 3.1, Windows 95, or Windows
NT 3.51 or later.
• 8 MB of RAM (16MB for Windows NT)
• VGA or better display card.
• CD-Rom Drive.
• 5 MB hard disk space, plus 7 MB additional
temporary disk space available during installation.
Recommended
• Pentium processor-based personal computer.
• Windows 95 or Windows NT.
• 16 MB of RAM (24 for Windows NT).
• Color palette supporting at least 256 colors.
• SVGA or better display card.
• CD-Rom Drive.
• 5 MB hard disk space, plus 7 MB additional
temporary disk space available during installation.
Note: Future releases may include video clips and
sound files that require additional hard disk space
(for the software to run them) and a Windows
compatible sound card.

primarily upon the student skill level and machine type.
You may need to schedule more time if you are a first
time user of Lexmark service training, or this is your
first service training course.
Experience personnel may use the following outline for
scheduling training time:

Course Exam
Experienced personnel may elect to go directly to the
certification exam, if you met all of the following
conditions:
• Have successfully completed at least one previous
Lexmark service training course in the product
category for which you want to receive Lexmark
certification.
Note: If you want to skip the inkjet printer service
training materials and go directly to an exam, you
should have successfully completed a previous
Lexmark inkjet printer service training course.
• Have experience servicing Lexmark printers.
• Have experience using Lexmark service manuals.
• Have experience using a meter and taking Ohms
and Voltage measurements.
• Have experience locating connectors and
identifying connector pin numbers.
• Have completed the color printing lessons and
understand how printers place color on paper.
If you met all of these conditions and want to skip
directly to the exam, proceed to the inkjet course exam
section. Course exams are listed by machine type.

Introduction
Inkjet Printers
An inkjet printer is an electro-mechanical printer that
forms characters on print media (paper, transparency,
etc.) using a printhead and liquid ink. The printhead
uses small heater plates and nozzles to control ink flow
and the formation of characters on the print media.
Lexmark combines the printhead assembly and ink
supply into one unit called a print cartridge.
The monochrome print cartridge contains black ink and
more nozzles than a color print cartridge. The color
print cartridge contain three colors of ink: cyan,
magenta and yellow.
Lexmark inkjet printers provide high quality text and
graphic printing. Lexmark printers can print on
envelopes, single sheet paper labels, 3 x 5 index cards,
and transparencies.
