3. What kinds of phones are the subject
of this update?
Theterm‘wirelessphone’refershere
tohandheldwirelessphoneswithbuiltin
antennas,oftencalled‘cell’,‘mobile’,or
‘PCS’phones.Thesetypesofwireless
phonescanexposetheusertomeasurable
radiofrequencyenergy(RF)becauseof
theshortdistancebetweenthephoneand
theuser’shead.TheseRFexposuresare
limitedbyFCCsafetyguidelinesthatwere
developedwiththeadviceoftheFDAand
otherfederalhealthandsafetyagencies.
Whenthephoneislocatedatgreater
distancesfromtheuser,theexposureto
RFisdrasticallylowerbecauseaperson’s
RFexposuredecreasesrapidly
withincreasingdistancefromthesource.
Theso-called‘cordlessphones,’which
haveabaseunitconnectedtothe
telephonewiringinahouse,typically
operateatfarlowerpowerlevels,andthus
produceRFexposuresfarbelowtheFCC
safetylimits.
4. What are the results of the research
done already?
Theresearchdonethusfarhasproduced
conflictingresults,andmanystudies
havesufferedfromflawsintheir
researchmethods.Animalexperiments
investigatingtheeffectsofradiofrequency
energy(RF)exposurescharacteristicof
wirelessphoneshaveyieldedconflicting
resultsthatoftencannotberepeatedin
otherlaboratories.Afewanimalstudies,
however,havesuggestedthatlowlevels
ofRFcouldacceleratethedevelopment
ofcancerinlaboratoryanimals.However,
manyofthestudiesthatshowedincreased
tumordevelopmentusedanimalsthathad
beengeneticallyengineeredortreated
withcancercausingchemicalssoasto
bepredisposedtodevelopcancerinthe
absenceofRFexposure.Otherstudies
exposedtheanimalstoRFforupto22
