The digital output was originally
designed to control 5 volt digital
inputs on external systems.
If you want to control a 12 or 24 volt
relay the 100K pull-up resistor must
be removed.

removed, the diagram looks like
shown on the right.
The built-in 27 volt ZenerDiode
will protect against relay coil
surge spikes.
