Lionel 70 Yard Lights User manual

Congratulations on your purchase of the Lionel Yard Lights! These lamps are
perfect for illuminating a busy freight yard on your layout.
Do not touch the lamps or the lamp housings during
operation. These components reach high temperatures.
Installing your Yard Lights
Power your Yard Lights with a Lionel Lockon, a FasTrack Accessory Power Wire, or a separate
power supply. To make the lamp connections, loosen the thumbscrews and slide the bare
ends of the wires into the holes in the post. Tighten the thumbscrews to secure the connections.
The ends of the wires must be stripped back 1/4” to 3/8”. Use a pair of wire
strippers to strip the wires. Only an adult should perform this task! Always use
care when stripping wires.
Once the lights are wired, you may choose to secure them to the layout by inserting two
screws (not included) into the holes in the base. Vary the voltage to control the lamps. Increase
the track/accessory voltage to make the lamps shine brighter; decrease track/accessory voltage
to dim the lamps. Keep in mind that the bulbs will last longer at lower voltages.
Track power
If you wire your Yard Lights directly to the track, the brightness of the lamps will depend on
the voltage applied to the track. To make these connections, use a Lionel Lockon (available
separately, 6-62900) for O and O-27 gauge track, or use an Accessory Power Wire (available
separately, 6-12053) for FasTrack layouts. To power the lights through a Lockon, attach the
Lockon to the track and connect the lamp wires to the Lockon terminals. To use the Accessory
Power Wire on a FasTrack layout, slide the quick connectors at the ends of the wire over the
electrical terminals on the underside of the track. Solder or twist the lamp wires to the bare
ends of the Accessory Power Wire, then wrap the connections with electrical tape.

Transformer/Power supply
You may also use a transformer or a separate accessory power supply to power your Yard
Lights. Simply connect one wire to the Power/A terminal and the other wire to the
Common/Ground/U terminal on the power supply.
Installing your Yard Lights in a TrainMaster Command Control
environment
For TrainMaster Command Control operation, wire your lights with an SC-2 Switch and
Accessory Controller (available separately, 6-22980) or the Accessory Switch Controller
(available separately, 6-14182). Refer to these manuals for additional information.
We recommend using 22-gauge wire.
SC-2 wiring and operation
Three wires (not included) are needed to connect your Yard Lights to the SC-2 and a
separate accessory transformer.
1. Attach one wire to the Common/Ground/U terminal of the transformer and connect it to
the accessory COMM (common) position on the SC-2.
2. Attach one of the light/extension wires (for wiring the lamps together, refer to the next
section) to the accessory ON/OFF toggle position on the SC-2.
3. Finally, connect the remaining lamp/extension wire to the Power/A terminal on the
transformer.
Use the AUX2 button on your CAB-1 Remote Controller to toggle the lights on and off.
Accessory Switch Controller wiring and operation
Three wires (not included) are needed to connect your Yard Lights to the Accessory Switch
Controller (ASC) and a separate accessory transformer.
1. Attach one wire to the Power/A terminal of the transformer and connect it to the COMM
terminal on the ASC.
2. Attach one of the light/extension wires (for wiring the lamps together, refer to the next
section) to the a numbered accessory terminal on the ASC.
3. Finally, connect the remaining lamp/extension wire to the Common/Ground/U terminal
on the transformer.
Use the AUX2 button on your CAB-1 Remote Controller to toggle the lights on and off.

Note!

Replacing the lamps
During the course of normal operations, it may
become necessary to replace a lamp. To replace an
expired lamp, gently rotate the lamp counter-clockwise
and pull it out of the socket. Refer to Figure 3. Replace
the lamp with Lionel part no. 610-2804-301, available
at your authorized Lionel Service Center or from Lionel
Service in Chesterfield, MI.
Wiring the lamps together
You may also wire the Yard Lights together. Two extension wires are connected to the power
supply (Lockon, transformer, etc.). The lamp wires are connected to the extension wires as
illustrated in Figure 2. Connections should be soldered or twisted securely and taped to avoid
short circuits.
