You now own one of the finest
model locomotives produced any-
where, the Lionel 4-6-2 steam locomo-
tive and tender with operating steam
whistle. From its intricately detailed
die-cast body to the smoke chuffing
out of the smoke stack, you ll notice
Lionel s commitment to quality and
realism.
Take a few moments to familiarize
yourself with this manual. It has
important information about operating
and maintaining your engine and ten-
der. Now get set to have some real fun!

To operate your 4-6-2 steam locomo-
tive, place it on Lionel or Lionel-
compatible O gauge or O-27 gauge
three-rail track. Make sure the wheels
properly rest on
the railhead. Note
the magnetic pull
of the wheels to
steel rail. That s

Lionel s legendary
patented feature
that uses magne-
tized wheels and
axles to increase
pulling power
(more than 20 cars
on straight and level track!) and to help
keep the locomotive on track when it
passes swiftly through curves.
Your 4-6-2 locomotive is designed to
operate on 7-18 volts alternating cur-
rent. To produce the sound of the steam
whistle from the tender, you ll need to
insert the plug into the inside of the
locomotive cab as shown above. Do
this with the track power OFF. Connect
the drawbars, and you re ready to run.
The whistle sound is activated by
the whistle-control button or lever
found on most Lionel transformers. If
the whistle does not operate when the
whistle control is
activated, reverse
the power connec-
tions at the track. If
your transformer
does not have a
whistle control
button or lever,
you can still acti-
vate the whistle by
using a Lionel
no. 610-5906-001
sound activation
button, available separately from your
Lionel Authorized Dealer.
Should you wish to operate
your locomotive on direct
current or simply do not
want sound, unplug the
cable from the rear of the
locomotive cab. The mechan-
ical whistle will NOT func-
tion properly on DC.

Connect the tender plug to its engine counterpart.
Connect the drawbars, and you’re ready to run.
A note on Magne-Traction
®
Your 4-6-2 locomotive features Lionel
Magne-Traction, magnetized drive
wheels and axles that help increase trac-
tive effort during operation. Because the
drive wheels are magnetized, take care to
prevent small metallic objects from
attaching to them and working their way
into the locomotive s motor assembly,
which may damage your locomotive.
Magne-Traction is not effec-
tive on nonferrous track.
Note!

Start by applying power to the track.
To get your locomotive into action,
press the direction control button on
your Lionel transformer. The reversing
unit inside your locomo-
tive “sequences” to the
next operating state. The
reverse unit alternates
between four modes:
forward, neutral, reverse,
neutral.
To select a single operational state (for
example, forward), you can deactivate
the reverse unit sequencing function.
Get your locomotive moving in the
desired direction, then slow it down
without stopping. Set the reverse unit
switch inside the locomo-
tive s cab to the OFF posi-
tion. The locomotive is now
“locked” into your chosen
direction. As with any con-
ventional locomotive, you
can control its speed by
adjusting the amount of power applied
to your track. Have fun!

Your tender is equipped with a
magnetic die-cast knuckle cou-
pler on one end and a drawbar that
connects to the locomotive drawbar on
the other end.
The knuckle
coupler is a
revolutionary
design first
introduced by
Lionel in 1950.
Lionel mag-
netic couplers
react to the
magnetic field
generated by a
Lionel remote-
control track section (available sepa-
rately). Place your locomotive s cou-
pler “trigger disc” over the central
coil of a remote-control track section
and press “uncouple” on the con-
troller. The magnetic field pulls the
disc downward, and the knuckle
opens.
One operating technique favored by
Lionel railroad-
ers is the mov-
ing uncouple.
Press the un-
couple button
as the locomo-
tive passes
over a remote-
control section.
The magnetic
field will open
the coupler,
and the consist
will remain behind as the locomotive
moves on.
But be careful—the speed of a
newly uncoupled and moving loco-
motive can increase dramatically.

Lubricating your locomotive
Help your Lionel 4-6-2 steam loco-
motive lead a long and produc-
tive life on your railroad by main-
taining it properly.
We recommend you
purchase a Lionel Lubri-
cation and Maintenance
Kit (no. 6-62927), avail-
able from your Lionel
dealer. Two basic rules
to keep in mind: never
over-lubricate (a small
amount will do), and
avoid getting grease or
oil on the locomotive s
wheels, contact rollers, or your track.
You ll know your locomotive
requires lubrication when visual
inspection reveals dryness on the
parts indicated in the illustra-
tion. Remove accumulated
dirt and dust before lubri-
cating, and always lubricate
any locomotive emerging
from prolonged storage.
Also, lightly lubricate
the locomotive s side rods
and armature shaft bush-
ings after each 50 hours of
operation.

Adding smoke fluid to your locomotive’s smoke generator
Your locomotive is equipped with a
smoke generator that produces safe,
clean white smoke during operation.
The smoke generator requires the
periodic addition of Lionel smoke
fluid in order to function.
Pierce the tube end
with a pin, then
add 4 to 8 drops
of fluid directly
into the 4-6-2 s stack. Smoke pro-
duction commences momentarily,
faster if you run your locomotive at
speed. When smoke production
wanes, add more fluid (4 to 8 drops).
An idle locomotive will not smoke.
Always keep a small amount
of smoke fluid in the loco-
motive s smoke generator;
the generator s element
may become damaged if
operated without fluid.
Smoke production is greater
at higher voltages and when the loco-
motive is pulling a heavy load or long
consist.
Replacing your locomotive’s headlamp
Your 4-6-2 locomotive lights the way
with a bright
headlight. It is illu-
minated with a 14-
volt lamp located
directly behind the
boilerface. During
the course of nor-
mal operation, the
lamp may require
replacement.
To gain access
to the lamp, first
remove the screw
located on top of the boiler, in front of
the smokestack. Replace the bulb
with a Lionel
no. 600-0363-300
lamp, available
from your local
Authorized
Lionel Service
Center or Lionel
Service. Insert the
replacement lamp
into the lamp
housing and re-
attach the boiler-
face; then rein-
sert the screw on top of the boiler.

face. When done, reinsert the boiler front
and replace the screw.

der are built with pride by Lionel and
carry a warranty to support continued
reliable operation. If service is required,
bring it and its warranty card to your local
Authorized Lionel Service Center. To find
the nearest dealer or Service Center, sim-
ply call 1-800-4-LIONEL.
If you prefer a Lionel factory repair,
call 810-949-4100, fax [phone], or
write Lionel Service, P.O. Box 748, New
Baltimore, MI 48047-0748. State the
problem and the product s purchase
date. We ll send a return authorization
letter to assure proper handling while
at Lionel. You may choose to have your
product repaired by Lionel Service after
its warranty has expired. A reasonable
service fee will be charged.
CAUTION: Make sure your prod-
uct is properly packed to prevent
shipping damage. The shipment must
be prepaid, and we recommend it be
insured. Please follow these instruc-
tions carefully. This warranty gives
you specific legal rights. You may
have other rights that vary from state
to state.
