Congratulations on your purchase of the Lionel Western Maryland Fireball Freight Set! This set features a dual-motor GP-7 diesel locomotive with an operating horn, a flashing strobe
light, and bright headlights. This locomotive leads an impressive string of cars, including a
Standard O PS-2 hopper, a single dome tank car, a flatcar with trailer, and a bay window
caboose.

3Move ‘em out!
Get your locomotive moving. Press the DIRECTION button on your Lionel
transformer or momentarily shut off track power. This sequences the reverse unit to
the next operating state.
Adjust track voltage until your locomotive moves at your desired speed. To
increase speed, increase track voltage. To decrease speed, reduce voltage. To stop the
locomotive, turn-off track power.
See page 5 for information on locking your locomotive into a single
operational state.
Place your locomotive on Lionel or Lionel-compatible
O gauge track.

2Power up your locomotive with your transformer.
Your locomotive is designed to operate on 8-18 volts alternating
current. Virtually all Lionel and Lionel-compatible alternating-current
transformers are suitable.

Running your locomotive with a Lionel transformer

Do not power your locomotive with direct current (DC). Damage to
sensitive electronic components may occur.
Caution!

To select a single operational state for your Lionel locomotive (for example, forward only), you can deactivate the reverse unit’s sequencing function with the reverse unit control
switch.
Get your locomotive moving in the desired direction, then slow it down without stopping.
Set the reverse unit control switch to OFF. Refer to Figure 1 for the location of the switch. The
locomotive is now “locked” into your chosen direction.
When you no longer want single-direction operation, just slide the switch back to ON.
Your locomotive’s reverse unit will “reset” to forward after any power interruption
lasting five seconds or longer, regardless of the original locked-out direction.

The no. 610-5906-001 button works with any Lionel AC transformer except
no. 6-4690 Type MW.
Note!
Press the HORN/WHISTLE button on your transformer or controller to sound the locomotive's horn. Be sure that the horn ON/OFF switch is in the ON position. Refer to
Figure 3 on page 7 for the location of that switch.
If your transformer or controller does not have a HORN/WHISTLE button, install a Lionel
Sound Activation Button (available separately, part no. 610-5906-001). Connect the button as
shown in Figure 2. Reverse the red and black wires if the horn does not sound.
If you would like to disable the horn sounds, move the horn ON/OFF switch to the OFF
position.
All track power must feed through the Sound Activation Button. Do not bypass the
button.

Lubricating your locomotive
Help your Lionel locomotive lead a long and productive life on your railroad by maintaining it properly.
We recommend that you purchase a Lionel Lubrication and Maintenance Kit (6-62927),
available from your Lionel dealer. Two basic rules to keep in mind: never over-lubricate (a
small amount will do), and avoid getting grease or oil on the locomotive’s wheels, contact
rollers, or your track.
You’ll know your locomotive requires lubrication when visual inspection reveals dryness on
the parts indicated in Figure 3. Remove accumulated dirt and dust before lubricating, and
always lubricate any locomotive emerging from prolonged storage.

Replacing the traction tires
Your locomotive is equipped with four traction tires. These rubber tires increase the tractive effort of your locomotive, allowing it to pull more cars at once. During the course of
normal operations, the traction tires may become worn out. Because you must remove the
trucks and the side frames to access the wheels, we recommend that you have the traction tires
replaced by your authorized Lionel Service Center.

Replacing your locomotive’s lamps
Your locomotive is illuminated by two 12-volt lamps. One lamp illuminates the rear lights, and the other illuminates the front lights. During the course of normal operations, they
may require replacement.
To replace the expired lamp, remove the four body screws (see Figure 3 on page 7) and
carefully lift the body away from the frame. Take care with the various wiring assemblies
connected to the shell.
Locate the assembly containing the expired lamp, which is held in position by a retaining
bracket. Refer to Figure 4. Carefully remove the lamp assembly from the bracket, then gently pull
the expired lamp from its socket. Replace the expired lamp with Lionel part no. 600-8352-311,
available from your authorized Lionel Service Center or Lionel Service in Chesterfield, MI. For
more information, see page 12. Reinstall the body and secure it with the four body screws.

Note! The roof-mounted flashing strobe light (Lionel part no. 610-8205-009) is located
inside the cab. Because of the complicated connection, we recommend that you
have your authorized Lionel Service Center perform this service.

Lionel magnetic couplers react to the magnetic field generated by a Lionel Remote-Control
Track section (available separately, 6-65149 or 6-12746 for O-27 gauge; 6-65530 for
O gauge; or 6-12020 for FasTrack layouts).
As illustrated in Figure 5, place the coupler trigger disc over the central coil of a Remote-
Control Track section and press UNCOUPLE on the controller. The magnetic field pulls the disc
downward, and the knuckle opens. You may
also press down on the uncoupling tab to open
the coupler.
One operating technique favored by Lionel
railroaders is the “moving uncouple.” Press
the UNCOUPLE button as the locomotive
passes over a Remote-Control Track section.
The magnetic field will open the coupler, and
the consist remains behind as the locomotive
moves on. But be careful—the speed of a
newly uncoupled and moving locomotive
can increase dramatically.
Refer to the next section to operate the couplers on your hopper and caboose.

hopper’s couplers, slide the
uncoupling tab on the side of the
coupler shaft toward the car. Do
not push down on the tab. Note
that the caboose’s trucks are not
equipped with this tab. To operate
the couplers on your caboose and
hopper with an Remote-Control
Track section (available
separately, 6-65530 for O gauge; 6-65149 or 6-12746 for O-27; or 6-12020 for FasTrack
layouts), simply position the uncoupling trigger over the magnetic disc on the an Remote-
Control Track section. Refer to Figure 6 for the locations of the uncoupling tab and
uncoupling trigger.

Replacing the caboose’s interior lamp
The interior of your caboose is illuminated by one 14-volt lamp, Lionel part no. 600-0161-300. During the course of normal operations, this lamp may require replacement. Replacement
lamps are available at your authorized Lionel Service Center or from Lionel Service in
Chesterfield, MI.
1. Carefully lift the curved ends of the ladders out of the slots in the
roof. Refer to Figure 7.
Be careful not to scratch the caboose roof with the ends of
the ladders.
2. Using a Phillips-head screwdriver, remove the screws from both
ends of the car. Refer to Figure 8.
3. Lift away the body.
Be careful with the wires that attach the body to the frame.
4. Carefully pull the expired lamp straight up and out of the socket,
then install the replacement bulb. Refer to Figure 9.
If you accidentally pull the entire socket away from the
frame, simply press the crimped copper bracket over the
vertical tab on the frame.
5. Replace the body onto the frame. The two end platform posts and
the tabs that receive the screws should be located inside the body.
6. Replace the screws at the ends of the car.
7. Carefully replace the ends of the ladders back into the slots in the
roof.
