INSTRUCTIONS FOR EYE CONNECTIONS, AND
LAP SPLICING OF SEISMIC CABLES
Cable splicing is much easier if the cable is cut clean without
frayed ends. We highly recommend No. C7, C9, C12, and C16
cable cutters as shown in the Loos & Co., Inc. Cableware Division
catalog. Zinc-plated copper oval sleeves in a complete range of
sizes are available through the Loos & Co., Inc. Cableware Divi-
sion and its appointed distributors.
Sleeves elongate after compression. To assure maximum holding
allow the end of the cable to extend beyond the sleeve after it is
compressed.
(See Figure 1) The following chart indicates the recommended
number of compressions for each size and type of sleeve to ob-
tain maximum holding strength. Keep the jaws of the swaging tool
at right angles to the sleeve being compressed, making sure the
sleeve is aligned in the jaw grooves. Then close the handles of the
swaging tool completely.
Note: for lap splices, at least two oval sleeves should be used.

Each Loos & Co. #3-346SB swaging tool is designed to work with
#3, #4, and #6 Zinc-Plated Copper Oval Sleeves. For use only on
Loos & Co. Seismic Cable Bracing sizes #GO3, #OR4, and #GR6.
You will not obtain proper performance or meet UL standards if you
do not use the proper Loos & Co. swaging tool and sleeve combi-
nation.
All sleeve compressions must be gauged to assure maximum hold-
ing strength, and it is recommended that all completed assemblies
be proof-tested.
Place sleeve to be compressed in proper size groove in swaging
tool by matching cable color to colored dot next to groove in tool. A
length of cable equal to the cable diameter should extend beyond
the length of sleeve to achieve maximum holding. (See arrow in
Figure 4).

Finished sleeve should look like this. Be sure sleeves have been
compressed the proper number of times.
(See NUMBER OF COMPRESSIONS table).
Use the swaging gauge provided with the tool to check proper after
swage diameter of sleeve.
Compressed sleeve should slide freely into corresponding size and
color slot in gauge.

Keep jaws of swaging tool at right angles to the sleeve to be com-
pressed, making sure the sleeve is aligned in the jaw grooves.
Close tool completely. Tool handles should snap shut indicating
complete closure.

TOOL MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENT
CAUTION: Over adjustment will cause the Adjustment Bolt to break.
Your Loos & Co. #3-346SB swaging tool has been designed to give
you years of trouble-free service. To obtain the best possible perfor-
mance, we recommend:
1) Clean and lubricate all moving parts regularly;
2) Keep all bolts tight;
3) Keep your swaging tool properly adjusted using the following
simple procedure:
Each #3-346SB swaging tool is supplied with a gauge. Select the
slot in the gauge corresponding to the sleeve size being com-
pressed. The compressed portion of the sleeve should pass into the
gauge easily. If it does not, then adjust the swaging tool as follows:
With the handles apart, use a 3/16” Allen wrench to tighten the set
screw in the handle ¼ turn. Then compress the sleeve and check
the “after swage” diameter with the gauge. Continue this procedure
until the compressed portion of the sleeve passes easily into the
gauge.
