1.3 HARDWARE‐HOUSING
LANNetworkPort
Thewirelessrangeextenderisequippedwithahigh‐speednetworkport,towhichyoucanconnectyourcomputerforthe
initialsetup,incaseyourwirelessrouterdoesnotsupportWPS—forexampleVerizonFIOS®wirelessrouters.Youcanuse
theincludednetworkcableforthatpurpose,butitisokaytouseanystandardEthernetnetworkcablethatmeetsor
exceedstheCat5specification.Ifyouarenotsureaboutthis,don’tworry.Anystandardnetworkcablepurchasedfrom
variousretailersoronlineshopswillworkjustfine.
WAN/LANNetworkPort
Ifyousetthewirelessrangeextendertoroutermode,thenyouneedtoconnectyourISPsmodemtothisport.
WPSPushButton
Wi‐FiProtectedSetup(WPS)isacomputingstandardthatattemptstoalloweasyestablishmentofsecurewirelesshome‐
networkconnections.CreatedbytheWi‐FiAllianceandintroducedin2007,thegoaloftheprotocolistoallowhomeusers
whoknowlittleofwirelesssecurityandmaybeintimidatedbytheavailablesecurityoptionstosetuptheencryption
methodWPA2,aswellasmakingiteasytoaddnewdevicestoanexistingnetworkwithoutenteringlongpassphrases.
So,whatdoesthisallmeanforyou?Ifyourwirelessrouterisanewerdevice,thereisagoodchancethatitisequippedwith
aWPSpush‐button,inwhichcaseyouareinluck,becauseaddingthewirelessrangeextendertoyournetworkwilljustbea
matterofacoupleofminutes.IftherouterisalittlebitolderanddoesnotsupportWPS,thesetupwillhavetobedone
withyourwebbrowser.Whilethattakesalittlebitlonger,theprocedureisalsoquiteeasy.
ResetButton
Inordertoresetthedevicetoitsfactorydefaultsettings,presstheresetbuttonfor10secondswhilethedeviceispowered
on.
PowerOutletConnector
Thewirelessrangeextenderplugsdirectlyintoapowerwalloutlet.Itsupports110V/60HzfortheU.S.and230V/50Hz
forEuropeanpoweroutlets.Theplugtypewillvarydependingonyourlocation.TheillustrationabovedepictstheEU
version.

b)Thenetworkadapterinthecomputerorlaptopisdisabled.
OnAdeviceisconnectedtotheLANportandanactivelinkhasbeenestablished.
FlashingAdeviceisconnectedtotheLANport,anactivelinkhasbeenestablishedand
dataisbeingtransmitted.Thisisthenormaloperationalstateifacomputer
orlaptopisconnectedtotheLANport.
WLAN
OffThewirelessLANinterfaceisdisabledinthesystemsettings.
OnThewirelessLANinterfaceisenabled.TheLEDissolid,meaningitdoesnot
flash,ifnodatatrafficistransmittedthroughthewirelessLANinterface.
FlashingThewirelessLANinterfaceisenabledanddataispassedthroughthewireless
LANinterface.
WPS
OffWPSisinactive.
OnAconnectionwithWPShasbeenestablished
FlashingslowlyTheWPSbuttonhasbeenpressedforfiveseconds.Theslowflashing
indicatesthataconnectionattemptusingWPSiscurrentlybeingperformed.
Afterashortwhile,theLEDwillstaylit,indicatingthattheconnectionhas
beenmadesuccessfully.

2. INSTALLATIONASWIRELESSRANGEEXTENDER
TheManhattanWireless300NRangeExtendercanbeinstalledinoneoftwoways.Thefirstwayinvolvesthe
aforementionedWPS,whilethesecond(wecallitthemanualmethod)usesamoretraditionalsetupprocess.Bothways
leadtothesameresult,anditisonlyamatterofconvenienceastowhyyouwoulduseWPSoverthemanualmethod,
providedyourroutersupportsWPS.
2.1 INSTALLATIONUSINGWPS
IfyourwirelessrouterisequippedwithaWPSbutton(sometimesreferredtoasN‐connect),thenyoucanconnectthe
rangeextendertoyournetworkliterallyjustbypushingtwobuttons.Hereishowitworks.
Step1:
Plugthewirelessrangeextenderintothewalloutlet.Thepositionofthewalloutletmustbe
chosencarefully.Makesurethatyouarecloseenoughtoyourwirelessrouter,sothatthe
wirelesssignalisstillrelativelystrong.Ifyoumovetoofarawayfromthewirelessrouterand
thewirelesssignalisalreadyquiteweakinthatlocation,youwillnotbeabletoachievegood
results.Useawirelessdeviceandcheckthesignalstrengthinthelocationwhereyouplanto
installtherangeextender.
Note:
Ifthesignalstrengthisbelow60%,youshouldmoveclosertothewirelessrouter.
Step2:Waitforabout60secondstoallowthewirelessrangeextendertocompleteitsstartupsequence.Verifythatthe
powerLEDisilluminated.
Step3:Onyourrouter,locateandpresstheWPSbutton.
Note:ThepictureillustratesthelocationoftheWPSbutton
onaManhattanwirelessrouter.Otherroutersmaynot
necessarilyhavetheWPSbuttoninthesamelocation.If
youcannotfindaWPSbutton,youshouldskipthissection
andcontinuewiththemanualinstallation.

Step4:
WithintwominutesofperformingStep3,presstheWPSbuttononthewirelessrangeextenderfor
fiveseconds.ThisactionwilltriggertheWPSconnectionprocess.Itmaytakeuptoaminuteto
complete.Whiletheconnectionisbeingestablished,theWPSLEDwillflash.Oncetheprocessis
completed,theWPSLEDturnsonandremainson.
Step5:
Userawirelessdevicetoconnecttoyourwirelessnetwork.Youneedtoconnecttothesamewirelessnetworkasbefore
becausetheManhattanWireless300NRangeExtenderre‐broadcaststheexistingwirelessnetwork,includingtheexisting
wirelessnetworkname(calledSSID)andtheexistingwirelesssecurity(forinstance,theWPA2encryptionkey).
Note:IfyouwanttochangetheSSIDoftheamplifiedwirelessnetworkoftheManhattanWireless300NRangeExtender,
youcandothatintheadministratorsettingswithanystandardWebbrowser.SeeSection4–“ConfigurationOptions”for
furtherdetails.ShouldyourunintoproblemswiththeWPSPushButtoninstallationmethod,eventhoughyourwireless
routersupportsWPS,proceedwithsettinguptherangeextendermanually,asdescribedinthenextsection.Usersofthe
VerizonFIOS®Internetserviceshouldnotethat,whilethewirelessrouterprovidedbytheISPdoesindeedfeatureaWPS
buttononthefrontofthehousing,itisdisabledinthefirmware.AsofJanuary2015,theWPSfeaturecannotbeenabled.

2.2 MANUALINSTALLATION
IfyouneedtoinstalltheManhattanWireless300NRangeExtendermanually,youwillneedtohavethefollowingitems
beforeyoucanbegin.
Youneedtoknowthenameofyourwirelessnetwork(itisalsoreferredtoastheSSID).
Ifyourwirelessnetworkisprotectedbyanencryptionkey,youneedtoknowwhatthatpasswordis.Itisthesame
passwordyouneedtoenteronyourlaptoportabletwhenyouconnecttoyourwirelessnetworkforthefirst
time.
AdesktoporlaptopcomputerrunningMicrosoftWindows,MacOSorLinuxthathasastandardWebbrowser
installed(Firefox,Safari,ChromeorInternetExplorer).
Astandardnetworkcable;e.g.,thecableprovidedinthepackagingoftheManhattanWireless300NRange
Extender.
Step1:
ConnecttheManhattanWireless300NRangeExtendertoyourcomputer’sLANusingtheincludednetworkcable.Startthe
computerandallowittofinishbooting.ConfirmthattheLANLEDonthewirelessrangeextenderisilluminated.
Step2:
LaunchyourWebbrowseranddirectitto
http://manhattan.repeater.Incasethisfails,youcanalso
enterhttp://192.168.2.2.Loginwiththeusername
“admin”andpassword“1234.”
Note:Iftheloginwindowdoesnotappear,theIPaddress
settingsofyourcomputer’snetworkadaptermaynotbe
compatiblewiththewirelessrangeextender.Referto
Section5–AppendixA:“ChangingtheIPAddressofa
NetworkAdapter”tosolvetheproblem.

Click“Repeater”

Waitwhilethewirelessrangeextenderscansforavailablenetworks.Thisprocesscantakeuptoaminute.
Step5:
TheManhattanWireless300NRangeExtendershowsallwirelessnetworkswithinrange.Ifyouliveinanapartmentbuilding
orinaneighborhoodwithmanyhousesincloseproximity,thislistcanbequiteextensive.Onceyouhavelocatedyour
wirelesshomenetwork,selectit.
Step6:
Onthisscreen,youneedtotypeinthewirelessencryption
keythatisrequiredtoconnecttoyourwirelesshome
network.Youneedn’tworryaboutselectingthecorrect
encryptiontype,authenticationmodeorciphersuite:The
rangeextenderfillsthatoutforyouautomatically.The
wirelesspasswordmustbeenteredinthe“Securitykey”
field.Besuretotypethepasswordcorrectly.Youcan
activatethe“unmask”optiontoseethepasswordinclear
text.InthetwofieldsbelowyoucantypeintheSSID
(wirelessnetworkname)ofthe2.4GHzand5GHz(AC)
network.Youcantypeinthesamenameasyourwirelessnetworkathome,i.e.,“Manhattan”,butitmaybeaggoodidea
tomodifytheSSID,sothatyoucanquicklysee,whichwirelessnetworkisfromyourhomenetwork,andwhichoneisthe
repeaternetwork.Intheexampleshownhere,weappend“24RP”and“50RP”respectively,todifferentiatethenetworks.
Click“Apply”whendone.

Step7:
Ifallgoeswell,youwillseethemainscreenagain.Thesetupisnowcomplete.
Step8:
Youcanjointhewirelessnetwork“ManhattanRP”(or,ifyouhaveaWirelessACcompatibleWLANadapter,thenetwork
“Manhattan50RP”)andenjoytheincreasedsignalstrength.Belowyoucanseetheoriginalwirelessnetworknamed
“Manhattan”,andthenewlycreatedwirelessnetwork“ManhattanRP”.Youcanalsoseethatthesignalstrengthofthenew
networkisquiteabitstronger,becauseitistherangeextendednetwork.Clickon“Connect”tojointhenetwork.
Typeinthesecuritykeyofyourwirelessnetwork,andthenclick“Ok”toconnect.

3. CONFIGURATIONOPTIONS
Inthissection,weexplaineverythingthereistoknowabouttheadditionalconfigurationoptionsoftheManhattanWireless
300NRangeExtender.Butbeforewebegin,awordofcaution:Theinformationpresentedisquitetechnicalattimesand
noteasilyunderstandablebyuserswithoutanyexperienceinsettingupcomputersandnetworks.IftermslikeIPaddress,
DHCPserver,WPA,SSIDorWPSareunknowntoyou,someoftheinformationinthissectionwillleaveyouconfused.Also,
askyourselfifanyofthestatementsbelowapplytoyou.Ifnot,thereisreallynoneedtocontinuereadingthissection.
Youshouldreadthissectionifyou
wanttochangethenames(SSIDs)ofthewirelessnetworkssothatyoucandifferentiatetheoriginalwireless
homenetworkfromtherangeextendernetworks.
wanttousethisproductasaregularwirelessaccesspointratherthanarangeextender.
wanttochangetheIPaddressoftherangeextendertobeinthesamerangeastherestofyournetwork.

3.1 CONNECTINGTOTHEADMINISTRATORWEBINTERFACE
ThedefaultIPaddressoftheManhattanWireless300NRangeExtenderis192.168.2.2.AnycomputerthathasamatchingIP
address—i.e.,intherange192.168.2.3–192.168.2.254—canconnecttotherangeextenderWebUIwithanystandard
Webbrowserathttp://192.168.2.2.Alternativelyyoucanopenhttp://manhattan.repeater.Theusernameis“admin”and
thedefaultpasswordis“1234.”
Typically,thecomputer’snetworkadapterissetuptoautomaticallyreceiveIPaddressinformationfromaDHCPserver,
suchasyourwirelessrouterathome.Unlessyouhavechangedthis,thereisnoneedtomakeachangetothenetwork
adapterconfigurationifyouwanttosetuptherangeextendermanuallyasdescribedintheprevioussection.However,if
youdorunanetworkadapterwithstaticIPsettings,youwillneedtoeitheradjustthesesettingsorchangethesettingsto
automaticDHCP.SeeSection5–AppendixA:“ChangingtheIPAddressofaNetworkAdapter”fordetails.

3.3 HOW‐TOS
Inthissection,wediscusssomeofthemostcommonactionsyouarelikelytoconsider.
3.3.1 Changingthenameofthewirelessnetworkname(SSID)
First,youneedtologintotheWebadminUIofthewirelessrangeextender.SeeSection4.1.
Next,click“BasicSettings.”Keepinmindthatthewirelessrangeextenderisadevice,whichmeansithastowirelessradios,
whichyoucanconfigureindependently.
ChangetheSSIDtothedesiredvalue,andthenclick“Apply”tosaveandactivatethesettings.
3.3.2 Settingupthedeviceasanaccesspoint
Inadditiontobeingawirelessrangeextender,thedevicecan
alsofunctionasaregularaccesspoint.Anaccesspoint
connectswirelessandwireddevicessothattheycan
communicateinanetwork.Thatisexactlywhatatypical
wirelessrouterinahomenetworkdoes,exceptthewireless
routeralsomanagestheconnectiontotheInternetof
multipledevicesatthesametime.Thatissomethingaregular
wirelessaccesspointcannotdo.
Note:TheManhattanWireless300NRangeExtendercanact
asaregularaccesspoint,butitcanfulfilltheroleofawireless
router,oncethemodeselectorswitchissettoroutermode.

Thisscreencontainsthemainconfigurationoptionsforthewirelessaccesspointmode.
SSID:Theservicesetidentifier(SSID)isusedasa
uniqueidentifierforawirelessLAN.It’scommonly
calledthenetworkname.Hereyouenterthename
youwishtouseforthiswirelessnetwork.Sincethis
isadeviceequippedwithtwoindependently
operatingwirelessradios,youcandefineboththe
2.4GHzandtheAC(5GHz)networknameshere.
SecurityType:Unlessyoudonotwanttolockdownyourwireless
networkinanyway,shapeorformandallowanyonefreeaccess,youwill
wanttoenablewirelesssecurity.Yourchoicesare“WEP,”“WPAPSK”.
“WPA/WPA2PSK”and“WPA2PSK.”WEPencryptionishighlyinsecure.It
shouldnotbeusedifyouwantthesecurityencryptiontoprovideactual
security.WPA2iswhatshouldbeusedinalmostallcases.Ifyouhave
olderwirelessdevicesthathavetroublewithWPA2encryption,youcan
enableWPA/WPA2encryption.ThismodeactivatesbothWPATKIP(lesssecure)andWPA2(AES)(moresecure),which
diminishesperformanceandweakensthesecurityofyournetwork.WhilestillmuchbetterthanWEP,WPA2PSKisbyfar
thebetteroption.Ifyouareunsureaboutwhichwirelessclientsyouhave,andiftheyallwillbeabletoconnect,we
recommendtostartwithWPA2,andonlydropdowntoWPA/WPA2PSKifclientshaveproblemsjoining.
OnceyouselectWPA2,youneedtoprovideawirelesspassword.Checktheunmaskoptiontoviewthepasswordinclear
text.Thepasswordmustbeatleasteightcharactersinlength,andformaximumcompatibility,werecommendrefraining
fromusinganyspaces(blankcharacters)inthepassword.

3.3.3 ChangingtheIPaddressofthewirelessrangeextender
TheLANinterfacesetupisanoptionalpartofthesettings.
Fortheaccesspointtofunction,itsIPsettingsarelargely
irrelevant.TheIPaddressoftheaccesspointismerelyused
toconnecttothedevice’sWebadmininterface.So,ifyou
wanttobeabletoconnecttotheaccesspoint’sadmin
interfacewithoutchangingthewirelesssettingsofyour
networkadapter,orifyouwanttousetheaforementioned
scheduler,thenhereiswhatyoudo:
1.FindoutwhattheIPaddressisofthewirelessrouterinyournetwork;forexample,thequitecommon192.168.0.1.
2.FindoutwhattheDHCPrangeisofthewirelessrouter.Inthisexampleweuse192.168.0.100to192.168.0.200.
3.SetthelocalIPaddressto192.168.0.201.
Oncethisisdone,youcanclick“Apply”tosavethesettings.
Aftertherestart,theWebadmininterfacewillbeat
http://192.168.0.201–andyoucanconnecttoitfromany
computerinthenetworkwithoutchangingitsIPaddress
settings.
ThesecondoptionontheinterfaceistheDHCP
function.TheDynamicHostConfigurationProtocol
(DHCP)isastandardizednetworkprotocolusedon
InternetProtocol(IP)networksfordynamically
distributingnetworkconfigurationparameters,such
asIPaddressesforinterfacesandservices.WithDHCP,computersrequestIPaddressesandnetworkingparameters
automaticallyfromaDHCPserver,reducingtheneedforanetworkadministratororausertoconfigurethesesettings
manually.IfyoustillhavenoideawhatDHCPmeans,andwewouldn’tblameyou,justknowthataDHCPserverenables
yourcomputer,laptop,smartphoneandtablettocommunicatewitheachother,andalsoaccesstheInternet.Thereare
threesettingstochoosefrom:
Disable:TheDHCPserverfunctionisturnedoff.ThewirelessrangeextenderwillnotprovideIPaddressinformationtoany
oftheconnectedcomputersornetworkingdevices.

TheWireless300NRangeExtenderisequippedwithanintegratedscheduler,whichallowsactivatingordeactivating
wirelessserviceatspecifiedtimes.Howcanthisfunctionbeused?Oneexampleissettingupthisdeviceasawirelessaccess
point(seeSection3.3.2)foryourchildrenand,perhaps,theirfriends.YoualsohaveaWPA2securedwirelessrouterinyour
homeprovidingaround‐the‐clockwirelessandInternetaccess.Ofcourse,youmay“neglect”totellyourkidswhatthe
passwordforthewirelessrouteris,andyouonlytellthemthepasswordfortheManhattanwirelessaccesspoint.Soifthey
wanttoconnecttotheInternet,ithastobedoneviatheManhattandevice.Andthatiswheretheschedulefunctioncomes
in.Theexamplebelowillustrateshowtosetupaschedulethatallowswirelessaccessfrom6amto10pmfromSunday
nighttoThursdaynight,and6amtomidnightonFridayandSaturdaynight.
Togetstarted,youneedtologintotheWebadminUIofthewirelessrangeextender.SeeSection4.1.Next,click
“Schedule”.
ClicktheEnabled/Disabledbuttontoactivatethe
scheduler,thenselectthedayoftheweekfor
whichyouwishtocreatethefirstschedule.Inour
example,thatwouldbe“Sun.”
Next,definethetimewindow(from…to),in
whichwirelessserviceisavailable.Inourexample
thatwouldbe06:00(6am)to22:00(10pm).
Checktheenableboxtoactivatethisschedule.

First,youneedtologintotheWebadminUIofthewirelessrangeextender.SeeSection3.1.Clickon“Basicsettings.”
Ifyouwanttochangethewirelessencryptionsettings,youcaneasilydothatbygoingtothebasicwirelesssettings.Here
youhaveaccesstothevariousencryptionmethods(WEP,WPAandWPA2),thedifferentciphertypes(TKIPorAES)andthe
wirelesskeyitself,calledpre‐sharedkey.
Formaximumsecurity,werecommendusingWPA2–AESencryption.Activatingthelesssecure“TKIP”insteadof“AES”,or
“WPA”insteadof“WPA2”shouldonlybedone,ifolderwirelessclientsexperiencedifficultiesconnectingtothewireless
network.WEPshouldreallyonlybeusedifyouhavelegacyequipmentsoolditwon’tevensupportWPAencryption.
3.3.6 Savingandreloadingsettings
YourManhattanWireless300NRangeExtenderallowsyouto
savetheconfigurationtoafilethatyoucanreloadatalatertime.

anddon’twanttomanuallyre‐enteralloftheprevioussettings.

Intheadministratorinterface,click“Save/ReloadSettings.”
Next,click“Loaddefault,”thenconfirmbyclicking“OK”toperformthehardwarereset.
Whenyouseethemessagebelow,thewirelessrangeextenderisbeingresettofactorydefaultvalues.Aftertherestartis
completed,thedevicebeaccessibleagain.

Inordertousetheschedulefunction(seeSection3.3.4),youneedtomakesurethatthewirelessrangeextenderissetto
thecorrectdateandtime.It’squiteeasytodothat.First,clickon“TimeZonesettings”.
Clickon“Copycomputertime”,thenclick“Apply.”
3.3.9 Changingtheadministratorpassword
InordertopreventunauthorizedaccesstotheWebadminUI,werecommendthatyouchangethepasswordassoonas
possible.Todothat,youfirstneedtologintotheWebadminUI,thenclickon“Password.”
Typeinusername“admin”,andthenthenewpasswordinthefieldbelow.Repeatthenewpasswordinthethirdfield,and
thenclick“Apply.”Afterthisyouwillneedtore‐logintothedevicewiththenewpassword.

Fromtimetotime,theremaybenewfirmwareavailablefortheManhattanWireless300NRangeExtender.Newfirmware
canbedownloadedfromtheManhattanwebsite(manhattanproducts.com)bysearchingforthekeyword“525756.”Ifnew
firmwareisavailable,youcandownloaditrightfromtheProductDetailspage.Saveitonthecomputerharddriveandunzip
thefile.
Inordertoinstallnewfirmware,proceedasfollows:
AfteryoulogintotheWebadminUI,select“Upgradefirmware.”
Click“Browse…,”thenselectthefileyoupreviouslydownloadedanduncompressed.Click“Upload”tobegintheupgrade
process.
Aprogressbarwillslowlyfillupastheupgradetakesplace.Thisprocessmustnotbeinterrupted!Thedevicecouldbe
damagedbeyondrepair.
