About this Technical Note
This Technical Note describes the installation of the Linear Encoder on the 3 m
and 5 m Barak printers.

Preparation
1. Check that you have a complete set of the correct components for this
installation, as detailed in the list of parts and shown in the figures above.
2. Make sure that the CARRIAGE is at the HOME position.
3. Print the scaling.mjob file from My Documents\Barak FE.
4. Turn off the printer.
5. Disconnect the X MOTOR ENCODER and the power cable, as shown below.
Installing the Linear Encoder
1. Wearing protective gloves, clean the top of the printer's BEAM and the area
next to the CARRIAGE BELT, using alcohol, as shown in the following two
figures.

2. Manually move the CARRIAGE to the middle of the printer.
3. Hold one end of the ENCODER SCALE, with the adhesive strip facing down.

4. At the left side of the CARRIAGE, use Sellotape to stick the end of the ENCODER
SCALE onto the beam, as shown below.

5. Make sure that the SCALE roll is to your left and that its end is at the bottom
of the roll and facing to your right.
6. Move the CARRIAGE to the left, over the SCALE, until you see the right end of
the SCALE exposed at the right side of the CARRIAGE, as shown below.

8. Gently pull the right end of the SCALE to the very end of the right end of the
beam, as shown below.

9. Peel off the protective tape from the adhesive strip of the SCALE, as shown
above.
10. Place the JIG on the SCALE as shown below.
11. Place the MAGNETIC SCALE JIG, on the MAGNETIC SCALE as shown above.
12. Using the jig to keep it in the right position, stick the MAGNETIC SCALE along
the entire BEAM, and at the same time, remove the protective tape of the
adhesive strip, as shown below.

13. You must now secure the MAGNETIC SCALE to the BEAM. This is done using the
two CLAMPS.
At the right end of the BEAM, insert the T-nut into the BEAM's groove, and
then insert the CLAMP into the same slot, above the T-nut.
14. Apply one or two drops of Loctite #222 onto the conical screw's thread and
tighten the screw, through the CLAMP, into the T-nut, as shown below.

15. Secure the left end of the SCALE to the BEAM, in the same way that you
secured the right side.

Adjusting the Encoder Reader
1. Attach the ENCODER READER to the Bracket as shown below.

2. Place the ENCODER READER and the BRACKET on a flat surface so they will be
correctly aligned with each other and tighten the screws, as shown below.

3. Using two screws, washers and spring washers, attach the BRACKET to the
CARRIAGE, as shown below.

4. Using a dry wipe, clean the magnetic scale all along its complete length, as
shown below.

5. Disconnect the old encoder connectors.
6. Reinstall the BRACKET with the ENCODER READER, onto the CARRIAGE but do
not tighten the screws yet.
7. Using the ENCODER READER's BOX BRACKETS, place the ENCODER READER's
electronic box over the right BCC card, and connect the new ENCODER
READER connectors instead of the old connectors, as shown below.

8. Turn on the printer.
9. Place a 0.5mm feeler gauge between the ENCODER READER and the MAGNETIC
SCALE to adjust the height, and tighten the bracket screws, as shown below,
then remove the gauge.

10. Make sure the encoder reader LED turns green at 0.5mm distance, as shown
below.

11. Move the CARRIAGE to the right and to the left along the length of the printer,
checking that the green LED remains constantly lit, all the way, and that the
ENCODER READER does not touch the SCALE at any point.
If it touches the SCALE, readjust the height to 0.5 mm at this point, and run
another check along the entire beam, making sure again that the green LED
remains lit.
12. Shut down the printer.
13. Connect the X motor connectors.
14. Turn on the printer and perform INIT.
15. Check the LINEAR ENCODER check box in the ENGINEER dialog box.
16. Perform the following test to check that the ENCODER is working properly:
a. Print the Scale_for_LE.mjob from My Documents\Barak FE.
b. Compare the X measure with the print that was done in the beginning
of the installation. Both measures should be the same.
c. If the last print is larger than the first one – the LINEAR ENCODER is not
enabled, re-check the option box in the ENGINEER window.

It is very important that you make sure you are using the right
X (horizontal) resolution at the RIP station, according to the following table.
