SUGGESTED ALARM LOCATIONS
• As close to the centre of the ceiling as possible; or at least no closer than 60cm to any wall or corner. If mounting smoke alarm
on wall, always locate the top of the smoke alarm 10-30cm from the ceiling (diagram A).
• As a minimum, smoke alarms should be located between sleeping areas and potential sources of re such as a kitchen,
heated garage or basement. In single storey homes with one sleeping area, an alarm should be installed in the hallway outside
the bedrooms. In single story homes with two sleeping areas, a minimum of two alarms are required. One outside each
sleeping area. In multilevel homes (includes guest, hostel etc), an alarm should be installed outside and inside each sleeping
area, in the basement and on every level of the home.
• Additional smoke alarms should be installed in bedrooms in anticipation of res originating within these rooms, caused by
faulty wiring lamp, appliances, smoking or other hazards.
• For best protections, smoke alarms should be installed in every room, or every level of your home.
• Install smoke alarm in hallways at a distance no greater than 4 metres from the farthest wall and no greater than 8 metres from
the next alarm.
• The distance from the apex of cathedral ceiling to the top of the smoke alarm should be 90cm minimum.
• For mobile homes, smoke alarm must be mounted on an internal wall not external wall or ceiling as these surfaces heat up etc.
• Including Smoke Alarms on a circuit with LED Lighting or fans, can cause signal interference, resulting in nuisance alarming or
beeping. A load correcting device should be installed before the rst smoke alarm on a circuit to rectify any nuisance alarms
on installs where this has occurred.
AVOID THESE LOCATIONS
DO NOT INSTALL A SMOKE ALARM:
• in the kitchen or the garage as this can result in nuisance triggering.
• within 1 metre of heating and cooling vents or within one metre of
return air or fresh air vents.
• in areas where temperatures may fall below 0°C or rise above 40°C.
• in areas where relative humidity may be outside the range of
10% - 90%, for example bathrooms.
• within 1 metre of a uorescent light.
• in areas where bugs or insect are present before eliminating
or minimising the problem.
• in the dead air space where the wall meets the ceiling.
• on the ceiling of a caravan or mobile home.

DEVELOP AN ESCAPE PLAN
BASIC OF ESCAPE PLAN
• Make a oor plan indicating all doors and windows and at least two escape routes from each room. Second story windows
may need a rope or chain ladder.
• Have a family meeting and discuss your escape plan, showing everyone what to do in case of a re.
• Determine a place outside your home where all of you can meet if a re occurs i.e. Letterbox.
• Familiarise everyone with the sound of the Smoke Alarm and train them to leave your home when they hear that sound.
• Identify children’s bedrooms with red stickers placed in the upper left corner of the windows.
• Practice a re drill at least every six months. Practice allows you to test your plan before an emergency. You may not be able to
reach your children. It is important they know what to do!
WHAT TO DO IF ALARM SOUNDS
• Leave immediately by following your escape plan. Every second count so don’t waste time getting dressed or picking up
valuables.
• In leaving, don’t open any inside doors without feeling it’s surface. If hot, or if you see smoke seeping through cracks, don’t
open that door! instead, use your alternate exit. If inside door is cool, place your shoulder against it, open slightly and be ready
to slam it shut if heat and smoke rushes in.
• Stay close to the oor if air is smokey. Breathe shallowly through a cloth, wet if possible.
• Once outside, go to your selected meeting place and make sure everyone is there.
• Call the re brigade from your neighbour’s home - not yours!
• Don’t return to your home until the re ofcials say that is all right to do so.
OPERATION AND TESTING
OPERATION
• Once the power has been connected and the battery has been tted the smoke alarm is operational.
• When smoke is detected the alarm will sound a loud audible alarm and the red LED will ash. The audible alarm will cease
once the level of smoke is reduced.
• In standby mode the red LED will ash periodically to indicate that the alarm is operating correctly.
• The green LED glows when the alarm is connected to the mains power.
TESTING
TESTING THE SMOKE ALARM WEEKLY TO ASSURE PROPER OPERATION
Test by pushing the test button on the Smoke Alarm for 3 seconds until the alarm sounds.
The alarm sounds if all electronic circuity, horn and battery are working. If no alarm sounds check the battery is installed the
correct way around or replace the battery.
If the battery is new and installed correctly and the alarm still doesn’t sound, replace the Smoke Alarm.
If the Smoke Alarm is installed in a Mobile Home test weekly and after every journey. When any smoke alarm is tested, all
interconnected units should sound and alarm.
HUSH FEATURE
• This Smoke Alarm has a built in Hush or Silence feature.
• If cooking or other non-hazardous sources cause the alarm to sound it can be temporarily silenced by pressing the hush
button.
• The alarm then enters a dormant period for 8 minutes.
• After the 8 minute dormant period the smoke alarm resumes normal operation and a beep sound to indicate this.
• CAUTION:Before using the hush button feature identify the source of the smoke and be certain that safe conditions exist.
REPLACING THE BACKUP BATTERY
The backup power for the Smoke Alarm is supplied by a 9V carbon zinc or alkaline battery. Under normal operating conditions the
battery should last for at least 12 months. The alarm has a low battery audible beep which will sound at 30-40 second intervals -
replace the battery immediately when this occurs.
Use one of the following batteries for replacement.
Carbon zinc type • Everyready #1222
• Gold Peak 1604P
• Gold Peak 1604S
• Gold Peak 1604G
Alkaline type • Everyready Energizer 522
• Gold Peak 1604A
• Duracell MN1604
Lithium type • Ultralife U9VL-J-P; FDK CP-V9J; Gold Peak CR-V9
Batteries are available from hardware stores, supermarkets and most major retail stores. It is recommended to replace the battery
annually.
The operation of the smoke alarm be tested with the test facility whenever the batteries are replaced.

INSTALLATION
THE ALARM MUST BE INSTALLED BY A LICENSED ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR
• The alarm will function correctly as a stand alone alarm or interconnected with other FSA 20000 alarms.
• All interconnected alarms must be supplied from a single power circuit.
• Do not connect the interconnect wire to active or neutral.
• Connect and power the smoke alarm with 220-240VAC only. The smoke alarm is suitable for use with non-pure sinusoidal power
sources (e.g. power derived from square-wave invertors)
All 220-240V wiring must comply with AS3100 wiring rules.
Solid wires with 1mm2 (or larger) cross-section area are recommended for power supply and inter-connection. Strip the Live,
Neutral, and Inter-connect wires back to the length of 10mm.
Connect the wires to the terminals and ensure the screws are fully tightened. The colors of wires are: Live = Brown; Neutral = Blue,
Inter-connect = White. The smoke alarm can be interconnected as many as 20 units in series. Check the connections carefully
before closing the junction box. Incorrect connection may damage the unit.
Connect and powered the smoke alarm with 220 - 240VAC only. The smoke alarm is suitable for use with non-pure sinusoidal
power sources (e.g. power derived from square-wave invertors)
For electrical noise elimination, a ferrite bead is supplied with this smoke alarm. Two mains wires need approx 18cm length for
winding the bead with 1 turn as shown below.
The bead should be installed less than 15cm from the screwed terminals. Earth loop and interconnection wire are not necessary
with any bead.
• Carefully check the connections before closing the sliding terminal cover - incorrect connection may damage the unit.
• Screw the mountains base to the ceiling or wall.
• Install the 9V battery and close. The alarm will not close if a 9V battery is not tted.
• Turn on the power and check the alarm LEDs. The green LED should glow to indicate that the power is present. Press the test
button to check that the alarm is operational. Interconnected alarms should also be checked.
• Do not leave the installation until alarms have been checked and are operational.
• When powering up the unit several audible beeps may sound - this is normal operation for the unit.
