AVOID THESE LOCATIONS
1. Kitchens or garages
2. Any area subjected to relative humidity outside the range of 10%-93%,for example bathrooms
3. Any area where the temperature may fall below 0°C or exceed 40°C.
4. Within 1m of any heating or cooling vents
5. In any bug or insect infested area
DEVELOP AN ESCAPE PLAN
As part of your plan, all family members should know and/or practice:
1. The two quickest ways out of each room
2. How to exit from upstairs, for homes with a second story.A rope or chain may be required.
3. An agreed upon meeting place outside, such as the letterbox
4. The sound of the smoke alarm and practice leaving your home when they hear it.
5. A re drill at least every six months including drills at nights.Practice allows you to test your plan
before an emergency. You may not be able to reach your children. It is important that they know
what to do!
SUGGESTED SMOKE ALARM LOCATIONS
1. Smoke alarms must be installed in accordance with local and national regulations. Please check
your State Fire Department requirements prior to installation.
2. As a minimum, smoke alarms should be located between sleeping areas and potential sources of
re such as a kitchen, heater or basement. In single story homes with one sleeping area,an alarm
should be installed in the hallway outside the room.In single story homes with two or more sleeping
areas,a minimum one alarm for each area is required. In multilevel dwellings,an alarm should be
installed outside and inside each sleeping area,in the basement, and on every level of the home.
3. Smoke alarms are best installed as close to the centre of the ceiling as possible. As a minimum, the
alarms should be located at least 60cm from walls. If wall mounted,it should be at least 30cm from
the ceiling.(Diagram 1.)
4. Larger rooms,in excess of 10m in length, should have multiple alarms installed.
5. For buildings with a peaked,or cathedral type ceiling, the alarm musty be installed at least 90cm
from the apex.(Diagram 2.)
6. Do not mount the alarm on an external wall of a mobile home,as they may be subjected to
excessive heat.
7. Including Smoke Alarms on a circuit with LED Lighting or fans, can cause signal interference,
resulting in nuisance alarming or beeping.Smoke alarms should be installed on their own circuit.

place your shoulder against it,open it slightly and be ready to slam it shut if heat and smoke
rush in.
4. Stay close to the oor if air is smoky.Breathe shallowly through a wet cloth if possible.
5. Once outside,go to your selected meeting place and make sure everyone is there.

INSTALLATION
All electrical installations must be carried out by a qualied electrician, in accordance
with Australian Standards.
1. Once the power has been connected and the battery has been tted, the smoke alarm is
operational.
2. When smoke is detected, the alarm will sound a loud audible alarm, and the red LED will ash.The
audible alarm will cease once the level of smoke is reduced.
3. In standby mode, the red LED will ash periodically to indicate that the alarm is operating correctly.
4. The green LED glows when the alarm is connected to main power. This should always be on.
5. The smoke alarm will function correctly as a stand alone alarm,or interconnected with other
FSA-25000 alarms
6. When powering up the unit several audible beeps may sound, this is normal operation.
7. All interconnected alarms must be supplied from a single power circuit.
8. Do not connect the interconnect wire to active or neutral.
9. Connect and power the alarm with 220-240VAC only. The smoke alarm is suitable for use with
non-pure sinusoidal power sources (eg power derived from square-wave inverters.)
10. All wiring must comply with AS3100 wiring rules.

USING THE SILENCE FEATURE
1. The FSA-25000 has a built in Silence feature. If cooking,or other non-hazardous sources cause the
alarm to sound,it can be temporarily silenced by pressing the Silence button.Beforepressing,
ensure the source of the smoke is identified, and can be confirmed as safe.
2. The alarm then enters a dormant period, for up to 8 minutes (if the alarm condition remains
present.) The red light will be on.
3. After the dormant period, the smoke alarm resumes normal operation.
2.The smoke alarm begins ‘Nuisance Alarming.’
There are a number of reasons why a smoke alarm may sound. The very rst step,is to ensure there is no
danger - carefully check surrounds for any sign of re or smouldering material.
If your alarm is sounding for no apparent reason, consider the following:
(a) Is the alarm too close to an air vent? Often the rst time an air conditioner or heater is used for a while,
it will have gathered dust. This, blowing into the photoelectric chamber of the alarm, can cause nuisance
alarming.
(b)Tiny insects in the photoelectric chamber can cause nuisance alarming.
(c) Momentary spike in power supply.
Normally, once the alarm has recorded a fault, after a recalibration phase,it will resume normal operation.
Occasionally, for no apparent reason, the alarm may continue to sound continuously,or at random
intervals. If this is the case, you need to try a simple smoke alarm reset. Please see the video with reset
instructions on our website at http://www.matelecaustralia.com.au/electrical-accessories/sensors-and-
kwh-meters/smoke-detectors/smoke-alarm-troubleshooting
REPLACING THE BATTERY
The backup power for the FSA-25000 is supplied by a 9V.Under normal operating conditions the battery
should last for at least 12 months, however,it is strongly recommended batteries are changed no longer
than this period.
The alarm has a low battery audible beep, which will sound at 30-40 second intervals – replace the
battery immediately when this occurs.
The smoke alarm must be tested by pressing the test button whenever the batteries are replaced.
Use one of the following batteries for replacement:
TROUBLESHOOTING
The following are some simple guides to rectifying issues with your MATelec Smoke Alarm
1.The smoke alarm is intermittently ‘chirping.’
This means the battery is low,and needs replacing.MATelec Australia recommends smoke alarm batteries
are replaced every 12 months
3.The red LED is flashing continuously after installing a new battery. After replacing the battery, the
alarm may enter a calibration phase, with the red light continuously flashing, and possible
intermittent chirps. This can last for up to 10 minutes (usually much less.) The alarm should resume
normal operation, with the green light on, and the red light flashing intermittently after this time.
