Know Your COSEC PANEL
The COSEC PANEL supports the following options:
• 1 Ethernet communication port
• 1 RS485 communication port
• 5 LEDs. (Fault, Battery Fail, Mains Fail, Alarm, Power)
• 1 Aux Output port
• 1 Aux Input port
The COSEC PANEL Lite model supports only 3 LEDs as compared to 5 on the
PANEL.
The COSEC PANEL communicates with the central COSEC application software
and the connectivity with the application server is accomplished via TCP/IP network
connection. Another key feature of the Matrix COSEC PANEL is its completely
distributed database. All information regarding cards, time zones, relay control and
alarm points are loaded into its memory, enabling the unit to operate independently
of any other equipment.
The PANEL in turn connects downstream to COSEC DOOR Controllers via the
RS485 loop or the TCP/IP network as shown in the figures below. The COSEC
PANEL is designed to operate off-line, making access control decisions
independently from a PC or other controlling device.

Mounting and Wiring
the &26(&3$1(/
Before installing the COSEC PANEL:
The COSEC PANEL cabinet has been designed to be mounted on a wall without
any additional enclosures. The COSEC PANEL enclosure ships pre-wired. The
cabinet size is adequate to accommodate the battery backup supply and the
necessary wiring connections for most applications. Conduit knockouts are
provided on the lower face of the cabinet.
Step 1: Unpacking the COSEC PANEL
1.Unpack the COSEC PANEL package. The following items are required to install
the PANEL:
• COSEC PANEL enclosure with accessory kit and Quick Start
• CD (included) as mentioned earlier.
• 12 VDC battery
In the case of the PANEL Lite the following items will be required:
• COSEC PANEL Lite enclosure with accessory kit and Quick start
• CD (included) as mentioned earlier.
• 12 VDC Adapter
2.Verify the content for any missing item/part or damaged component. Any missing
or damaged item should be reported immediately.
Step 2: Selecting a Mounting Location
The COSEC PANEL should be accessible for ease of installation and maintenance.
The cabinet should be mounted indoors, in a secure location providing normal
temperature and humidity, leaving sufficient space around and in front of the
cabinet. The location should be easily accessible for servicing the equipment.
Select an ideal COSEC PANEL location using the following guidelines:
• Stay away from electrical or communication devices:
PANELs must be located at a minimum distance of 2 m (6 feet) from any high
voltage equipment or wiring (> 230 Volts) and from electrical equipment susceptible
of generating electrical interference, at a minimum distance of 1 meter (3 feet) from

6 Matrix PANEL Quick Start
telephone equipment or lines, and at a minimum of 8 meters (25 feet) from any
transmitting equipment.
• Review the COSEC PANEL layout, cable runs, and power needs.
• Mount the enclosure at the proper location on the wall. Use appropriate
anchors for the mounting material.
• Run all I/O wires to the enclosure, and properly mark each wire for its use.
The PANEL comes with a 8 port terminal strip to connect the I/O and the
RS485 communication cables.
To connect the wires to the ports:
• Strip off about half a centimeter of the insulation of the wire ends.
• Push back the orange/black levers of the connector of appropriate port,
using a blunt pin or a small flat screw driver.
• Insert the stripped ends of the wires into the openings of the connector, with
one wire in each opening.
• Release pressure on the levers. The wires will be held in place by spring
clamp action
To remove the wires,
a. push back the levers.
b. pull out the wires gently.
c. release pressure on the levers.

Matrix PANEL Quick Start 7
Connect the RJ45 connector of the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port located
next to the 8 port terminal on the PANEL and in the case of the PANEL Lite on
the face of the enclosure as shown.
The COSEC PANEL enclosure has a knockout for routing the I/O and the
communication cables coming into the enclosure. This knockout is located on the
lower face of the PANEL enclosure.
Step 3: Power Supply
The PANEL operates on DC input power. The AC input to the Universal Power
Supply board can be 90-285VAC@50- 60Hz.
The PANEL enclosure comes equipped with a prewired plug having a third Ground
pin, which fits only into a grounding type outlet. It is advisable to route the power
supply from the mains through a Constant Voltage Transformer (CVT). When there
is sufficient AC power, the power-on LED illuminates. If the AC power is off, the LED
is not illuminated.
The Panel Lite comes with a 12VDC adapter which can be directly plugged into the
power jack provided on the PANEL Lite enclosure.
Power should only be applied to the unit when all connections are completed
and tested.
Battery
One 12 VDC, 7 A-Hr sealed lead-acid battery provides standby backup power. This
option is not available with the PANEL Lite. When the primary power is off, the
COSEC PANEL automatically switches to the battery for continuous operation. The

8 Matrix PANEL Quick Start
battery provides three hours of standby backup power under normal operation with
four COSEC DOORs apart from the PANEL getting power from the same power
supply.
The PANEL is capable of providing 700 mA at 13.8 VDC for battery charging. The
PANEL has deep discharge protection built in for the protection of the battery. If the
battery discharges below 10.5 V, the PANEL disconnects the battery and indicates
the Battery Fail alarm.
Replace the battery every two to two-and-a-half years, or more often if the PANEL
and connected DOORs have a high rate of backup use.
Step 4: Connecting the COSEC PANEL to the Ethernet
The following diagram illustrates a typical COSEC System installation layout in a
heterogeneous environment:
The COSEC PANELs come with an on-board RJ-45 port as mentioned earlier.

PANELs are factory configured with a default IP address of 192.168.50.1.
IP addresses of the COSEC PANELs can be changed as per the site requirements
using the Network Parameters option of the on board web Jeeves application as
explained later in this manual.
Step 5: Mounting the PANEL
Once all the connections have been completed it is time to mount the PANEL or
PANEL Lite enclosure unit at the selected secure location.
Drill holes in the wall for insertion of the wall anchors provided with the PANEL using
the mounting template to set their position. The PANEL Lite however needs only a
single wall anchor for mounting it on the wall. The holes are to be drilled in
accordance with the following dimensions of the PANEL and the PANEL Lite.

10 Matrix PANEL Quick Start
Place the Mounting template on the wall and mark the points for drilling holes for the
two wall anchors. Drill a hole of appropriate size and place the nail grips in the
holes. Ensure that the wall anchors protrude slightly from the wall. Align the
keyhole slots on the back of the PANEL enclosure with the wall anchors on the wall.
Slide the PANEL enclosure downwards to secure it on the wall.
Step 6: Powering up the PANEL
Once all the connections are checked, power up the PANEL which in turn will go
through the booting process. The LEDs on the PANEL enclosure will flash twice
followed by a beep to signal the end of the booting process.

Connecting the PANEL to the
Monitoring PC
Connect your computer's Ethernet port and the PANEL's Ethernet Port by using
either of two below mentioned methods:
• Connect both the computer's and the DOOR's Ethernet port to an Ethernet
hub with standard straight-through Ethernet patch cables as shown.
• Connect the computer's Ethernet port directly to the PANEL's Ethernet port
with an Ethernet crossover/Straight cable. A crossover cable is a cable that
maps all output signals on one connector to the input signals on the other
connector. This allows the computer and the PANEL to perform full-duplex
Ethernet communication.
When configuring the IP addresses of the new COSEC PANEL, please
ensure that you connect the PANELs one at a time on the network. This is to
avoid conflict of IPs which would occur if two PANELs with the same default
IP addresses are connected on the network.
