transmission(Figure).Thistransmissionfeaturesonelow
reversegearandtenforwardgears.The
RTAO-14710-B-AStransmissionisratedforenginesupto
400 hpand1,450 ft-lbstorque(1936 NSm)
Thistransmissionfeaturesheavy-dutycaststeel
housings,twincountershaftgeararrangements,fine
pitch“multi-mesh”gearing,two-pieceinputshaftand
drivegeardesign,repeatandnon-repeatingshift
patterns(manuallyshiftedtransmissions),airactuated
buttonoperatedrangeshifting,remoteshiftcontroland
integralclutch housingreleasemechanism.Additionally,
theRTAO-14710-B-ASseriestransmissionfeatures
electronicallycontrolled,dualservomotorautomatic
shiftingwithinaspecifictransmissiondriverange.
Theauto-shiftedRTAO-14710-B-AStransmission
utilizescomputercontrolledelectricshiftmotors
connectedtothestandardthree railrepeatpattern,and
aircylinderactuatedrangeshiftingfunction.
NOTE:TheRTAO-14710-B-ASautoshift transmission
requireclutchdisengagement toselect thedrive
range,eitherofthetwolowestforwardgearsorthe
reversegear.
COMPONENTS
COUNTERSHAFTS
Twincountershaftdesigndividestheratedtorque
equallybetweentwoshafts.Becauseoftorquesplitting,
eachgearsetcarriesonlyhalftheload,greatlyreducing
thefacewidthofgears.
MAINSHAFT
Themainshaftassemblyfeaturesthefloating gear
principle.Thesegears,when notengaged bytheslide
clutchgears,“float”onorbetweentheiradjacent twin
countershaftgears,eliminatingtheneedforgearsleeves
and bushings.
NOTE:Onlythecountershaftgearswhichmatewith
multi-meshmainshaftgearshavefinepitchgearing
(i.e., firstandreversegearsareofthecorsepitch
conventionalgearingtype).
HOUSING
Theclutchhousingmountstotheengine,andthegear
caseandclutch housingsboltdirectlytoeachother.The
gearcaseprovidesforoilsump,fill and drainplugs,
remoteshiftcontrolmountingandvariousbearingand
inspection handholecovers.
CLUTCHRELEASEMECHANISM
Theclutch housingincorporatesprovisionsforthe
pull-typeclutchreleasebearingcarrier,releaseyoke,
shaftsandadjustableactuatingarm.Theclutchcontrol

housingincorporateslubegalleriesforgreasingthe
releasebearingshafts.Formoreinformationregarding

ELECTRONIC CONTROL
Theshiftbarhousingservomotorsarecontrolled by
theECUofthecontrolcomponents.TheECUisattached
tothetransmissionandconnectedtothe engineECU,
shiftselector,speedsensorsandothertransmission
controldevicesthroughwireharness.
NOTE:Engineandtransmissionelectronic control
systemswill incorporateaninterfacemodulebetween
ECUmodules.

Theshiftbarhousingonthe electronicallycontrolled
autoshift transmissionisfittedwithdualelectricindexing
(lateralandlongitudinaldirection)motorsthatactuatethe
shiftforksandslidetheclutchgearsforwardorbackward
toengagegears.Themotorcommandsaredirected by
the electronic controlsystemECU.
SHIFTSELECTORMODULE
Theautoshifted10-speedtransmissionsutilizeashift
bywiresystemconsistingoftheEatonDriverCommand
Console(DCC)selectorcontrolmodule.Thismoduleis
connectedtothetransmissionECUbyharness.Theshift
selectorcontrolmodulemayuse eitherleveractuatedor
touchpadtypecontrol(Figure).

OPERATION
Toconvert theconstanthigh-speed,high-torque,
rotationalenergyofthe engineintoavariablespeed,
highertorquelow-inertiarotationthatcanbeusedto
movethecoach,thetransmissionmustbeabletobe
shiftedfromonegear rangetoanother.Gearshiftsare
accomplishedthroughanarrangementof fourfork
actuatedslidingclutchgearspositionedalongthe
mainshaftofthetransmission.
Inputshaftrotationistransmittedtotwincountershafts
eithersideofthemainshaft.Thecountershaftsarefitted
withgearsthatcontinuouslyrotateandrotateamating
gearonthemainshaft.Rotatingmainshaftgearsarenot
directlycoupledtothemainshaft,therefore,shaftrotation
isachievedonlybyengagementoftheslideclutchgears.
Eachslidingforkoftheshiftbarhousingisattachedto
oneoftheslidingclutchgears.Asashiftforkisindexed
foraspecificspeedviatheremoteshiftcontrol,theclutch
gearmovestoengagetheinnergearoftheadjacentfront
or rearmainshaftfloating gear.Engagementintothe
rotatingmainshaftgearcausestheslidegeartorotate
andturnthemainshaftandoutputshaft.Theselection
andengagementofaspecificgeartherebyincreasesor
decreasestheoutputshaftspeedofthetransmission.
TheRTLO-14610-Ausesasplitteraircylindertoshift
theslideclutchgearthateitherengagesordisengages
thethesplittergear,whichinturnengagesordisengages
thefrontboxfromtherearauxiliaryboxandcountershaft.
ShiftingoftheRTAO-1470-B-ASautoshift
transmissionisperformedthroughthe electronicleveror
touchpadshiftselectormodule.intothe“D”(drive)range
will allowthe electronic controlsystemECUto
automaticallyupshiftordownshift thetransmissionas
needed.Theclutchmustbeused(disengaged)when
shiftingintothe“D”rangefromanyotherpreviously
selectedgear.Thiselectricallyshiftedtransmissionalso
utilizesandcontroltheairactuatedrangecylinder
operationsfor rangeshiftfunctions.
MAINTENANCE
PERIODICINSPECTIONS
Every5,000 miles(8,000 km)or150 operatinghours
cleanthe exteriorofthetransmissionandmakethe
followinginspections:
1.Checkall transmissiontoenginemounting
fasteners.
2.Checkforanylooseelectricalharnessesorairline
connections.
3.Removefillerplugordipstickandchecklubeoil
level.Checkforanyoil leaks.
4.Checkforcorrectadjustmentandoperationof
clutchreleasemechanism.
5.Cleanaldirt,dustandforeignobjectsoff theshift
selectormodule.Keepforeignobjectsandliquidsaway
fromshiftconsole.
LUBRICATION
Thetransmissionisdesignedsothatall internalparts
including gears,bearingsandshaftsare eithersplash
lubricated,oroperateinanoilbaththatiscirculated by
themotionofthegearsandshafts.Alwaysmaintain
properlubeoil levelstoassureaprotectiveoilfilmonall
loadedsurfacesofgearsand bearings.If fluidlevelistoo
low,metaltometalcontactwhichcausesscoring,scuffing
andseizurecouldoccur.
NOTE:Ifthelevelistoo high,oilmaybeforcedoutof
thecasethroughthemainshaftopenings.
InitialServiceInterval
Theinitial“factoryfill”lubricantshould bedrained
betweenthefirst3,000to5,000miles(4,827to8,045km).

CAUTION
Duringinitialoperationtinymetalparticlesare
freedfromthematingsurfacesofmovingparts.
Thelubricantcarriestheseparticlesthroughout
thetransmissionandmaycause excessive
wear.Removeall metalparticlesfoundonthe
magneticplug(s).
NormalServiceInterval
OntheautoshiftedFullermodelRTAO-14710-B-AS,
every250,000 miles(402,000 km)or7,500 operating
hoursthesynthetictransmissionfluidshould be
changed.UselubricationspecificationS-27 (Synthetic
ManualTransmissionGearOil-EATONRoadranger
CD50 orMOBILMobiltransSHC-50).
1.Operatethetransmission untilnormaloperating
temperatureisreached.
2.Removethebottomdrainplug(s)and draintheoil
whilewarm.
3.Fillthroughdipsticktubetodipstickfulllevelmark.
Ontransmissionswithoutdipstick,removethesidefill
plugandrefill thetransmission untiloil levelisevenwith
bottomofhole.
4.Thoroughlycleantheplug(s)beforere-installing.
REMOVAL
NOTE:Useofasuitablesling,transmissionjackor
dollyisrecommended duringstep11 oftheremoval
procedure.Atransmissiondollyisavailablethrough
partsoutletsormaybefabricatedas shownon
drawing20-233.See “ServiceTools”atendofthis
section.
1.Placebatterydisconnectswitch“Off”.Applythe
parkingbrakeand blockvehiclewheels.
2.Drainthelubricantfromthetransmission,and
removethedipstickandtubeifequipped.
3.Disconnect thereverseswitch harness andtone
ringspeedsensorharness ifequipped.Onautoshift
transmissionsdisconnect the engineECUandshift
moduleharness.
4.Loosenturnbuckleandunfastentheclutch
releasearmreturnsprings.
5.Disconnect theclutchrearcontrolcablefrom
releasearm.

6.Rotatethelevertopermit thereleaseyokeforkto
turn upand pull free oftheclutchreleasebearing.
7.Unfastenandremovethesplinedleverandslide
releasearmoff shaft.
8.Disconnect thetransmissionairline.
9.Disconnect thedriveshaftfromthetransmission.
Refertothe“DriveshaftRemoval”procedureinsection
14.13.Removethe engineandtransmissionmoduleas
anassembly.Refertothe“EngineRemoval”procedure
showninsection8A1thru8A4.
14.Disconnect thetransmissionbottomsupport
mountingfastenersfromthe enginecradleifequipped.
15.Removethemountingcapscrewsattachingthe
transmissiontothe engineflywheelhousingandslide
transmissionoutandawayfromenginewhilemaintaining
alignment.
CAUTION
Properengine-to-transmissionalignmentmust
bemaintainedwhileremovingtransmissionto
preventclutchandinputshaftbinding.Donot
allowtherearofthetransmissiontodropdown
andhangunsupportedinthesplinedhubsofthe
clutchdiscs.Failureto observethiscautionwill
resultinbendingordistortionoftheclutch
frictiondiscs.
NOTE:Inspect the engine-to-transmissionmounting
surfaces,pilotshaftbearingand bearingmountin
flywheelforanysignsofwear.
