Introduction
1Introduction
1.1 Liability
Liability for personal injury and property damage is excluded, if they can be traced to one or
more of the following causes:
·Non-observance of the user manual.
·Non-observance of safety precautions and safety messages.
·Use of the monitor for purposes other than intended.
·Use of material which is not in accordance with the intended use of the monitor.
·Improper storage, installation, commissioning, operation or maintenance of the system.
·Unauthorized structural modifications to the system.
·Failure to monitor and maintain the monitor parts that are subject to wear.
·Improperly performed repairs.
·Disasters caused by foreign objects or force majeure.

The identification plate is installed on the upper detector holder. It contains the following
information:

·Type: Designation of the monitor

The following chapters give detailed information on safety-relevant topics such as the intended
use of the monitor, relevant safety messages and warning signs on the monitor.
Furthermore, the personal protective equipment and personnel requirements are specified.
2.1 Intended Use
NOTICE
Improper use can cause damages.
Risk of property damage!
– Only do contamination measurement as specified.
The customer, not the manufacturer, is responsible for all personal injury and property damage
resulting from a non-intended use. Safe operation cannot be guaranteed if the monitor is not
used according to the specifications.
The monitor is intended for the contamination measurement of clothing and small objects.
Only authorized personnel that have received proper training concerning the risks of ionizing
radiation must operate the monitor.
2.2 Personnel Requirements

Warning Signs and Instructions on the Monitor
2.5 Safety Installations
The machine has the following safety installations/features:
·Emergency stop push buttons.
Before you start the operation of the monitor, make sure that all safety installations are present
and operational.
2.5.1 Emergency Stop

2.6 Electrical Safety
DANGER
Danger due to high voltage levels!
Risk of electric shock!
– All work on the electrical equipment must be done by qualified personnel only.
– All work on the electrical equipment must be done in compliance with the local safety
regulations.
– Before you do work on the electrical equipment, set the main switch to OFF and secure
it to prevent it from being switched back on.
DANGER
Danger due to using defective and insufficiently insulated tools.
Risk of electric shock!
– Only use electrically insulated tools.
– Make sure that tools are in a serviceable condition prior to use.
DANGER
Danger due to electric components that are still energized when the main switch is set to
OFF.
Risk of electric shock!
– Make sure that these components are clearly identified at all times.
– Disconnect the main power supply before you do work on these components.

Modifications can cause damages.

Electrical Safety
Obey these safety requirements before and during the operation of the monitor:
1. Make sure that you:
·Only use the power cords and cables that are supplied with this equipment.
·Do not use extension cords.
·Connect power cords to a correctly grounded electrical outlet.
·Do not place objects on power cords.
·Do not override or disable electrical or mechanical interlocks.
2. If any of the following conditions occur, immediately set the main switch to OFF and
disconnect the power supply from the electrical outlet:
·The monitor emits unusual noises or odors.
·The power cord is damaged.
·A circuit breaker, fuse, or other safety device is tripped.
·Any part of the monitor is damaged.
3. Before you do maintenance work on the computer, make sure that you ground your body
to prevent electrostatic discharge which can cause damage to the components.
2.7 Operational Safety
DANGER
Danger due to the use of non-permitted flammable gases or gas mixtures.
Risk of explosion!
– Do not use flammable gases.
– Only use the non-flammable gas mixture specified in chapter 3
NOTE
Pure Methane is flammable. If Methane is used in low concentration and mixed with a fill
gas such as Argon, it is considered non-flammable and therefore safe to use in a well-
ventilated location.
When you operate the monitor:
·Connect the gas outlet to a ventilation system (optional).
·Make sure that there is a good flow of air at the installation location.
When you operate the monitor with a Methane gas mixture, it is recommended to do frequent
gas leak checks with a gas warner such as the Mirion Gas Warner Type I.
For conveyors make sure that:
·The conveyor housing completely encloses the moving components.
·All power transmission guards are in place.
·The warning signs are attached to the conveyor housing as specified on delivery. Signs
must not be removed from housings or be painted over.
·The conveyor is not overloaded and only used as intended.
·Before you do maintenance work, the main switch is set to OFF and secured against
being switched on again.

Product Description
4Product Description
The following chapters give an overview of the monitor and its components. The location of
each component is shown and a detailed description of their function given.
4.1 General
The RTM750 laundry monitor is used in places where the surface contamination on clothing or
on small objects such as tools has to be monitored. A typical application of the laundry monitor
is at the exit of operational areas.
When the operator starts the measurement process, the conveyor belt moves the laundry
continuously through two sets of detectors. One is installed at a fixed height below the belt and
the other at an adjustable height above the belt. For the convenience of the user, the
measurement process is controlled via touch screen display, which is installed at an ergonomic
position on a movable holder at the loading side. Also installed at the loading side is a laundry
holder, which allows a consecutive loading of items on to the conveyor belt and an
uninterrupted contamination measurement.
To achieve optimal measurement results, the optical sensors for height control check the
required clearance between the bottom and the top detectors. This clearance depends on the
height of the items to be measured. Different parameter sets can be defined for objects of
different shapes and sizes. Each parameter set requires a unique calibration.
Before a measurement it is necessary to select the applicable parameter set on the display. If
a height adjustment is necessary, the monitor sends a specific display message to the user.
The adjustment is done manually with a handwheel. When the clearance is correct, the
contamination measurement and hence the loading of items onto the conveyor can start again.
When the optical sensors at the loading side register an item on the belt, it automatically starts
moving the items to the measurement area between the detectors. Alternatively it is possible to
start the belt movement manually with the Start/Stop push button.
The detectors are operated with gas. The gas inlet and outlet are on the left side of the
monitor. The gas valve controls the amount of incoming gas. And the digital gas flow meter
shows the exact amount of incoming and outgoing gas. Alternatively it is possible to view the
gas flow meter on the touchscreen display. The gas flow detectors allow an optional
discrimination of alpha and beta radiation.
It is possible to monitor the RTM750 from any computer within the same network, when it is
connected to the central monitoring system (CeMoSysTM).

4.2 Electrical Cabinet
The electrical cabinet holds the major electrical components to protect them from the
environment and to prevent electrical shock to equipment users.
Refer to the applicable schematic(s) for all relevant details such as power supply and
distribution, electrical wiring or the component location, if applicable.

4.2.2 Frequency Converter
A frequency converter is an electronic device that converts alternating current (AC) of one
frequency to alternating current of another frequency. In the laundry monitor it is used to
control the speed of the motor that drives the conveyor belt.
4.2.3 RLC
The RADOS LAN Converter (RLC) is a device developed by Mirion in order to optimize the
function and all processes of their monitors that use gas flow proportional detectors for the
measurement of ionizing radiation.
It receives data and signals from all input devices that are connected to the monitor, such as
the optical sensors or the detectors. The RLC translates them accordingly for the computer
and subsequently translates back the processed data from the computer to the related output
devices.
