6.DonotdisassembletheMobileDigitalPowerInverter.Itcontainsno
user‐serviceableparts.SeeWarrantysectionforinstructionsonobtainingservice.
AttemptingtoservicetheMobileDigitalPowerInverteryourselfmayresultinarisk
ofelectricalshockorfire.Internalcapacitorsremainchargedafterallpoweris
disconnected.
7.Toreducetheriskofelectricalshock,disconnectbothACandDCpowerfrom
theMobileDigitalPowerInverterbeforeattemptinganymaintenanceorcleaningor
workingonanycircuitsconnectedtotheMobileDigitalPowerInverter.Turningoff
controlswillnotreducethisrisk.

PrecautionsforWorkingwithBatteries
WARNING:Explosionhazard
1.Followallinstructionspublishedbythebatterymanufacturerandthe
manufactureroftheequipmentinwhichthebatteryisinstalled.
2.Makesuretheareaaroundthebatteryiswellventilated.
3.Neversmokeorallowasparkorflameneartheengineorbatteries.
4.Usecautiontoreducetheriskofdroppingametaltoolonthebattery.
Itcouldsparkorshortcircuitthebatteryorotherelectricalpartsandcouldcausean
explosion.
5.Removeallmetalitems,likerings,bracelets,andwatcheswhenworkingwith
lead‐acidbatteries.Lead‐acidbatteriesproduceashortcircuitcurrenthighenough
toweldmetaltoskin,causingasevereburn.
6.Havesomeonewithintherangeofyourvoiceorcloseenoughtocometo
youraidwhenyouworknearalead‐acidbattery.
7.Haveplentyoffreshwaterandsoapnearbyincasebatteryacidcontactsskin,
clothing,oreyes.
8.Wearcompleteeyeprotectionandclothingprotection.Avoidtouchingyour
eyeswhileworkingnearbatteries.
9.Ifbatteryacidcontactsskinorclothing,washimmediatelywithsoapand
water.Ifacidentersyoureye,immediatelyflooditwithrunningcoldwaterforat
leasttwentyminutesandgetmedicalattentionimmediately.
10.Ifyouneedtoremoveabattery,makesureallaccessoriesareoffsoyou
don’tcauseaspark.

PrecautionsforUsingRechargeableAppliance
CAUTION:Equipmentdamage
Theoutputoftheinverterisnon‐sinusoidal.
Mostrechargeablebattery‐operatedequipmentusesaseparatechargeror
transformerthatispluggedintoanACreceptacleandproducesalow
voltagechargingoutput.
Somechargersforsmallrechargeablebatteriescanbedamagedif
connectedtotheMobileDigitalPowerInverter.Donotusethefollowingwiththe
MobileDigitalPowerInverter:
•Smallbattery‐operatedapplianceslikeflashlights,razors,andnight
lightsthatcanbepluggeddirectlyintoanACreceptacletorecharge.
•Somechargersforbatterypacksusedinpowerhandtools.
Theseaffectedchargersdisplayawarninglabelstatingthatdangerousvoltagesare
presentatthebatteryterminals.
Ifyouareunsureaboutusingyourrechargeableappliancewiththe
MobileDigitalPowerInverter,contacttheequipmentmanufacturertodetermine
therechargeableappliance’scompatibilitywiththemodifiedsinewave
(non‐sinusoidal)ACwaveform.

operaon of the inverter. When the inverter is mounted, the
venlaon openings must not point up or down.

Wehighlyrecommendthatyoureadtheentirechapterbeforebeginningthe
installationproceduressothatyoucanplananinstallationthatissuitedtoyour
powerneeds.
CalculatingBatteryRequirements
BatterytypeandbatterysizestronglyaffecttheperformanceoftheMobileDigital
PowerInverter.Therefore,youneedtoidentifythetypeofloadsyourinverterwill
bepowering,andhowmuchyouwillbeusingthembetweencharges.Onceyou
knowhowmuchpoweryouwillbeusing,youcandeterminehowmuchbattery
capacityyouneed.Werecommendthatyoupurchaseasmuchbatterycapacityas
possible.
CAUTION
TheMobileDigitalPowerInvertermustonlybeconnecttoa12Vbatterysystem.It
willnotoperateifconnectedtoa6Vbattery,andwillbedamagedifconnected
toabatterywith16Vormore.
ChoosinganApporiateLocation

compartmentscontainingbatteriesorflammablematerials,orinlocations

TheMobileDigitalPowerInvertermustonlybeinstalledinalocationthatis:

CoolAmbientairtemperatureshouldbebetween32°Fand105°F(0°C
and40°C)—thecoolerthebetterwithinthisrange.
VentilatedAllowatleast3”(7.5cm)ofclearancearoundtheinverterforair
flow.EnsurethattheventilatedopeningsontheDCendandonthe
ACendoftheunitarenotobstructed.
SafeDonotinstalltheinverterinthesamecompartmentasbatteriesor
inanycompartmentcapableofstoringflammableliquidslike
gasoline.
ClosetoDonotuseexcessiveDCcablelengths:theyincreasewireresistance
batteryandreduceinputpower.LongerACwiresarepreferabletolonger
DCwires:wireresistance(andthereforevoltagedrop)islessand
thecostislower.
ProtectedfromDonotmounttheinverterwhereitwillbeexposedtogases
batterygasesproductedbybatteries.Batterygasesarecorrosive,andprolonged
exposuretobatterygaseswilldamagetheinverter.
CalculatingCableSizes
Tooperatesafelyandeffectively,theMobileDigitalPowerInverterneedsproper
cablesandfuses.BecausetheMobileDigitalPowerInverterhaslow‐voltageand
high‐currentinput,itisessentialthatyouuselow‐resistancewiringbetweenthe
batteryandtheinvertertodeliverthemaximumamountofusableenergytoyour
load.
Forsafeandefficientoperation,youwillneedtocalculatecablesizesforyour:
•DCinputcablesfromthebatterytoinverter(oneway).

disconnect/batteryselectorswitch,andthefuseblock.Theconnectorsyouuse
mustcreateapermanent,low‐resistanceconnection.Ifcrimpconnectorsare
required,MotoMasterrecommendsusingapprovedandcertifiedconnectors,and
tousethetoolrecommendedbytheterminalmanufacturer.Makesurenostray
wiresprotrudefromtheconnectororterminal.
4.Foreachcableendthatwillbeconnectedtotheinverter,strip1/2"(13mm)to
3/4"(19mm)ofinsulationfromthecable.Theamountstrippedoffwilldependon
theterminalschosen.
Noted:ThisitemnotincludeDCcable
5.ThreadaDCterminalcoveroverthepositiveandnegativecables.Theredcover
goesonthepositivecable;theblackcoveronthenegativecable.
6.Topreventsparkingwhenmakingtheconnection,ensurethedisconnect/battery
selectorswitchisoff.
7.Installthelockwasherandnutthataresuppliedwiththeinverter.Tightenthenut
toatorqueof9–10ft‐lb(12.2–13.6N‐m).Maketheconnectionsnugenoughso
theringterminaldoesnotmovearoundontheDCterminal,butdonotover
tighten.

TurningtheInverterONandOFF
TheON/OFFswitchontheinverter’sfrontpanelturnsthecontrolcircuitinthe
MobileDigitalPowerInverteronandoff.
Toturntheinverteronandofffromitsfrontpanel:
•MovetheON/OFFswitchtotheONpositiontoturntheinverteron.
•MovetheON/OFFswitchtotheOFFpositiontoturntheinverteroff.
Whentheswitchisoff,theinverterdrawsaverylowcurrentfromthebattery.
NOTE:Thedigitaldisplayontheinvertermaynotshowtheexactpowerinwatts
thatisbeingused. Devicesthatdrawasmallloadwhencomparedtothecapacity
oftheinvertermaydisplayzeroforpowerout,thisisnormal. Pleasedouble
checkthatthesmallloaddeviceisworkingasexpectedifthedisplayshowsa

Turningloadsonseparatelyhelpstoensurethattheinverterdoesnothaveto
deliverthestartingcurrentforalltheloadsatonce,andwillhelp
preventanoverloadshutdown.

theON/OFFswitchturnedonandnoloadconnected,butleftinthisstate

offwhenyouarenotusingit.

MobileDigitalPowerInverter.Pleaseread“HighSurgeLoads”and“TroubleLoads”
carefully.
HighSurgeLoads
Someinductionmotorsusedinfreezers,pumps,andothermotor‐operated
equipmentrequirehighsurgecurrentstostart.TheMobileDigitalPowerInverter
maynotbeabletostartsomeofthesemotorseventhoughtheirratedcurrentdraw
iswithintheinverter’slimits.TheMobileDigitalPowerInverterwillnormallystart
single‐phaseinductionmotorsratedat1/2horsepowerorless.
Note:AlthoughtheInvertercansupplymomentarysurgepowerupto3000W,some
appliancesmayexceedthecapabilitiesoftheInverterandtriggerthesafety

overloadshutdowncircuit.Thisshutdownisintermittent.Itwillautomaticallyrestart,
thenshutdownlikeaflashlight.Werecommendyoutochecktheoutputofyour
appliance.
TroubleLoads
CAUTION
SomeequipmentmaybedamagedbytheMobileDigitalPowerInverter’smodified
sinewaveoutput.
Someappliances,includingthetypeslistedbelow,maybedamagediftheyare
connectedtotheMobileDigitalPowerInverter:
•ElectronicsthatmodulateRF(radiofrequency)signalsontheACline
willnotworkandmaybedamaged.
•Speedcontrollersfoundinsomefans,powertools,kitchenappliances,and
otherloadsmaybedamaged.
•Somechargersforsmallrechargeablebatteriescanbedamaged.See
“PrecautionsforUsingRechargeableAppliances”fordetails.
•Metalhalidearc(HMI)lightscanbedamaged.
Important:Ifyouareunsureaboutpoweringanydevicewiththe
MobileDigitalPowerInverter,contactthemanufacturerofthedevice.
MobileDigitalPowerInverterunit
MinimalmaintenanceisrequiredtokeepyourMobileDigitalPowerInverter
operatingproperly.Periodicallyyoushould:
•Cleantheexterioroftheunitwithadampclothtopreventthe
accumulationofdustanddirt.

Chapter5willhelpyouidentifythesourceofmostproblemsthatcanoccurwiththe
MobileDigitalPowerInverter.
Ifyouhaveaproblemwiththeinverter,pleasereviewthischapterbeforecontacting
yourdealer.
BuzzinAudioEquipment
Someinexpensivestereosystemsmayemitabuzzingnoisefromtheirloudspeakers
whenoperatedfromtheMobileDigitalPowerInverter.Thisoccursbecausethe
powersupplyintheaudiosystemdoesnotadequatelyfilterthemodifiedsinewave
producedbytheinverter.Theonlysolutionistouseasoundsystemthathasa
higherqualitypowersupply.
TelevisionReception
WhentheMobileDigitalPowerInverterisoperating,itcaninterferewith
televisionreceptiononsomechannels.Ifinterferenceoccurs,trythefollowing:
1.Makesurethatthetelevisionantennaprovidesanadequate(“snow‐
free”)signal,andthatyouareusinggoodqualitycablebetweentheantennaandthe
television.
2.KeepthecablesbetweenthebatteryandtheMobileDigitalPowerInverter
asshortaspossible,andtwistthemtogetherwithtwotothreetwistsperfoot.(This
minimizesradiatedinterferencefromthecables.)
3.MovethetelevisionasfarawayfromtheMobileDigitalPowerInverteras
possible.
4.DonotoperatehighpowerloadswiththeMobileDigitalPowerInverterwhile
thetelevisionison.
