Introduction
Congratulations on your choice of the Motorola KeyNote Decimal Digital Tone-and-
Voice Pager. This state-of-the-art receiver has been designed for ease of use, as
well as high performance and reliability that pager users have come to expect from
Motorola. Setting the pace with its unique compact design and conformance to the
most stringent quality standards, KeyNote is the ultimate tone-and-voice pager.
Before attempting to operate your pager, please read this operating instruction
manual carefully so that you may get the full benefit from your pager.
Step 1. Remove Pager from Carton and Inspect
Remove the pager from the shipping carton and inspect for any shipping damage.

Step 2. Battery Installation
(Refer to Figure 1)
A. Slide the battery door locking switch on the bottom of the pager fully in the
direction of the arrow to unlock the battery compartment.
B. Next, using the triangular arrow located on the square textured area on the
battery door, slide the door in the direction of the arrow to fully expose the
bottom of the battery compartment.
C. Align the battery so that the battery’s polarity markings (+ and-) match the
polarity markings on theback cover near the battery door and insert the battery.
D. Close the battery door by pressing slightly on the battery while sliding the
door until it is fully closed and a positive click is heard. The battery door is self-
locking. No further action to lock the door is necessary.

Note: If a nickel-cadmium battery is installed, you may need to recharge the battery
first to ensure optimum battery capacity and performance. Use either the Motorola
NLN3305 120 Vac Battery Charger or the Motorola NLN3306 220 Vac Battery
Charger, as applicable. For additional information on battery charging, refer to the
applicable charger manual.
Step 3. Turning the Pager On
Turn the pager on by sliding the power switch to the ON position (refer to Figure 2
for location of the power switch.) Sliding the switch is an upward direction will place
the pager in the ON mode.

Step 4.Battery Condition Check
Immediately after the pager is placed in the ON mode, the pager will automatically
test the condition of the battery.

A good battery is indicated by a power-up alert (double-interrupted 4-beep tone)
followed by channel noise or audio., A lamp on top of the pager will flash along with
any alert tones as an additional page indicator.
A low battery is indicated by a rapidly pulsating beep, or no beep at all.
Step 5. Volume Check and Adjustment
After the power-up alert, listen for background noise or voice messages. Adjust the
volume control to a comfortable listening level and then press the RESET switch to
silence the pager (Refer to Figure 2 for location of the volume control and reset
switch.) The pager is now ready for normal operation.
Step 6. Paging Operation
(Figure 3)
When a page is received, you will hear an interrupted tone alert followed by a voice
message (function 1) or a continuous tone alert

followed by a voice message (function 2), depending on system operation. When
the voice message is completed, press and release the RESET switch. the pager is
now ina standby condition ready to receive the next page. After a page, if the pager
is not reset, all messages and channel noise will be heard.

Your pager comes with the following standard features:
Automatic Listen/Manual Reset: Following the alert tone a voice message will
immediately follow. After the voice message, the pager monitors the channel unless
the RESET switch is pressed and released.

Dual Function: In order to activate the dual function feature, it may be necessary to
contact your Paging Service Company or System Manager. The pager is equipped
with a dual-alert feature, so that the pager has available two different priority level
calls: function 1 or function 2. Function 1 is an interrupted alert tone. Function 2 is a
continued alert tone. The two different alerting tones can be interpreted as desired
by the user. Each function can be alerted followed by a voice message.

Battery Level Check and Monitor: Each time the pager is turned on, or the RESET
switch is pressed and released, the battery level is checked (refer to BATTERY
TEST and Figure 3.) If the battery voltage drops below a minimum level
(approximately 1.1 volts), an automatic low battery warning will be heard, which is a
one-second fast pulsating beep. The automatic warning is produced only once and
does not occur again until the

pager is turned off, and then back on again. Once you hear this alert, you should
replace the alkaline battery within a few days. A rechargeable battery should be
replaced or recharged within a few hours.
Battery Information
Battery Types: The pager is designed to operate with a single AA-size alkaline
battery (Motorola type NLN8278) or a single, AA-size nickel-cadmium battery
(Motorola type NLN7975.) Either of these batteries provides for optimum pager
performance.
AA-size alkaline or nickel-cadmium batteries from other manufacturers may give
comparable performance, but have not been tested by Motorola. Substitution of a
battery other than those recommended by Motorola could reduce operating life.
Replacing the Battery
When necessary, replace the battery by fol-

lowing the instructions listed in Step 2, under Battery Installation.
Options
your pager may be equipped with one or more of the following options. Contact your
Pager Service Company or manager for availability of these options.
External Speaker Jack: When a pager is used in a high noise environment, an
optional Motorola-approved lapel speaker or ear piece can be connected to the
external accessory jack located on the top control panel. The jack is fitted with a
protective plug.
Note: To prevent entry of dust and moisture, the plug should be inserted whenever
the external speaker jack is not being used.

Fixed Alert/Audio Only Volume Control: When this option is installed, the alert tone
volume is factory preset (non-adjustable) at the maximum volume level. turning the
volume control will vary only the voice message volume level. Note: Use of earphone
is not recommended with this option.
Function 1 Voice/Function 2 Tone:The function 1 voice/function 2 tone pager
operates the same in function 1 as the standard tone-and-voice model. However,
when a function 2 page is received, a continuous alert tone is heard (no voice.)
Unless reset, the alert lasts for 12 seconds. The function 2 page contains no voice
message.

Repair and Maintenance
The KeyNote pager, properly handled, is capable of many years of trouble-free
service. However, should it eve require service, Motorola’s National Service
Organization, staffed with specially trained technicians, offers strategically located
repair and maintenance facilities. Consult your Motorola sales representative for
service locations in your area.
