NIR-CS-3000BT
Whole Grain Analyser
Overview
This chapter provides an overview of the NIR-CS-3000BT WHOLE GRAIN ANALYSER’s features, .
the touch screen display and a description of the operation
The NIR-CS-3000BT has been developed as an instrument to measure protein, moisture, fat/oil,
sugar and alcohol content of foods. The NIR-CS-3000BT has been developed in Australia for use .
by food manufacturers and organisations that need to analyse food and food ingredients
The NIR-CS-3000BT is a full spectrum NIR Transmission Spectrophotometer. The NIR-CS-3000BT
uses a linear diode array detector and a spectrograph to provide the NIR transmittance spectrum
from 720 –1100 nm. Within this region of the electromagnetic spectrum compounds such as
protein, moisture, oil, alcohol and carbohydrates absorb infrared energy. By measuring the
intensity of the near infrared energy that passes through a cell filled with grains or oil
seeds, .each of the components can be measured
The NIR-CS-3000BT has been designed to provide the following features:
•Prediction of Protein, Moisture, Oil and Starch in cereal grains, oil seeds and pulses
•Direct calculation of Test Weight, Screenings and Retention
•Built-in PC with Touch Screen
•Customised Analysis Records
•Direct Load Ticket Print
•Automated Pathlength Adjustment
•Outlier Detection Methods
•Average of up to 30 scans
Installed Calibrations
The NIR-CS-3000BT Whole Grain Analyser is supplied with calibration models for wheat, barley
and canola. Other grains including oats, sorghum, rice, corn; pulses including chick peas, field
peas, faba beans, lupins, mung beans, lentils and oil seeds including soybeans, linseeds, safflour
seeds, can be installed
Calibrations for company specific products can be developed by the user on a separate PC to the
analyser. Calibrations for other products can be developed using our NTAS(Near Infrared
Technology Analysis) software which is an optional item with the NIR-CS-3000BT Whole Grain
Analyser.

The NIR-CS-3000BT comes ready to use, with all internal software installed and standard
calibrations saved into the Calibration folder. This internal software provides a means of predicting
protein, oil and moisture in the standard grains

Whole Grain Analyser
Light from a tungsten halogen lamp is shone through a sample chamber, onto focusing optics and
into a flat field spectrograph with a silicon photodiode array detector. The spectrograph disperses
the light into the NIR spectra from 720-1100nm. Chemical bonds within grains and oil seeds absorb
NIR light at specific wavelengths of light. Protein(N-H)absorbs at 1020nm, moisture at 970nm and
oil at 905nm. The amount of light absorbed by the sample at these wavelengths are proportional .
to the concentration of each componen
To measure the amount of light absorbed by the sample, two components are measured. The
amount of light passing through the optics is measured by the detector and stored in the internal
computer’s memory. This is referred to as the “100% reference” reading. A sample of grain is
loaded into the sample chamber. Flaps at the base and top of the chamber allows grain to flow
through the chamber. Up to 10 spectra can be collected and stored. The amount of light passing
through the sample is measured by the detector and stored into the internal computer’s
memory. .“This is referred to as the “sample scan
The amount of light absorbed by the sample is determined by the following equatio :
(Absorbance = Log(100% Reference)/Sample Scan
Protein, moisture, oil, alcohol and starch absorb NIR energy (light) at specific wavelengths of light
(wavelengths = nm), ie, protein –1020nm, moisture –970nm, oil –910nm, alcohol 905nm and
starch 820nm. The NIR spectrum of the sample, shown in figure 2, represents the amount of
light . absorbed at each wavelength, which is proportional to the concentration of each componen
The calibration models for each product are stored in the instruments memory. The computer
applies the calibration model to the NIR spectrum and calculates the protein, oil and moisture
values for the sample. A calibration model is stored in the internal computer’s memory for
each .component, eg, protein and moisture, for each product, eg, wheat, barley etcc

To analyse a sample, the instrument collects the NIR spectrum for the sample, and the computer
applies the calibration model and computes the % protein, % moisture, % oil etc.
