Introduction
Overview
Microgeneration systems such as Solar PV and small windturbines are at their most efficient when the generated energy is
consumedon-siteratherthanexportingit
tothegrid.Thisiswhat wecall'self-consumption'.
zappi isaMode3chargingstation,compatiblewithall electric vehiclesthat complywithSAEJ1772,EN62196andEN61851
plug-in electric vehiclestandards.
zappi works likeany regular charging point but has special eco charging modes which will benefit homeowners with grid-tied microgenerationsystems,likewindorsolar
generation.TwospecialECOchargingmodesautomaticallyadjustchargingcurrent inresponsetoon-sitegenerationandhouseholdpowerconsumption.InFASTcharge
mode,zappioperateslikeanordinaryEV
charging.
Agridcurrentsensor(supplied)simplyclipsaroundtheincomingsupplycable.Thissensorisusedtomonitorexcesspowerand whenusingthespecialECOchargemodes,
zappi automaticallyadjuststhechargerateinresponsetoavailablesurplus.

Thehouseinthecentreisstraight-facedasgridelectricityisbeingusedby
the house(0.9kW is this example).
zappi is waiting for the EV to respond; the EV is not ready to accept
charge.

Charging
The charging session has been delayed by the EV because a schedule
charge has been set in the vehicle.
zappi is paused for a few seconds in order to limit the start/stop
frequency during ECO+ mode charging.
The Start/Stop Delay can be
changed
in the Charge

InthisexamplethecarischarginginECO+modeat1.6kW,thereisno
importorexportfromthegrid(0.0kW) andtheEVbatteryhascharged

Restart...
The EV is fully charged.
The charge energy used during the last charge is displayed at the bottom
right (20.0kWh in this case) and the 'green contribution' is also shown
(40% in thisexample).
Zappi isdoingarestartsequence.ThismayhappenwithsomeEVsthat
needtobe'woken-up'tostartchargingafterapausingcharge.Charge
should start immediately afterwards, otherwise the “Charge Delayed”
message willappear.

Charging Modes
zappi hasthreedifferentchargingmodes whichcan beselectedsimply by pressingthe
buttonwhenthemainscreenis
showing.Thechargemodecan bechangedbeforeor duringa charge.
Regardlessof thechargemodeused,allofthesurpluselectricityisusedbutzappi's specialecochargemodes,limitthe
amount of gridelectricused.Belowis explanationof eachofthethreechargingmodes.
FAST
Charges at the fastest rate.
FastModewillchargetheEVatthefastestrateandwillimportgridelectricityifthereis
insufficient surplus generatedpower.
TheactualchargerateisdependantontheEV'sonboardchargerandthegridsupplyvoltage.
Typically,vehicleshaveeithera3.3kWor6.6kWcharger.Theactualpowercanbealittle
different ifthegridsupplyvoltage is not exactly 230V.
zappi will deliver up to 7kW provided the supply connection is suitably rated.
ECO
Adjusts the charge rate to limit the use of grid electricity.
Thechargerateiscontinuouslyadjusted,inresponsetochangesingenerationorpower
consumptionelsewhereinthehome,therebyminimisingtheuseofgridpower.
Charging will continue until the vehicle is fully charged, using available surplus power.
However,ifatanytime,theavailablesurpluspowerfallsbelow1.4kW,theshortfallwillbe
drawn from thegrid.
Note: The EV charging standard does not support charging below 1.4kW.
ECO+
Adjusts the charge rate tolimit the use of grid electricity and will pause the
charge if there is too much grid electricity being used.
Thechargerateiscontinuouslyadjusted,inresponsetochangesingenerationorpower
consumptionelsewhereinthehome,therebyminimisingtheuseofgridpower.
Chargingwillpauseifthereistoomuchimportedpower,continuingonlywhenthereisenough
surplus poweravailable.
ThesurpluspowerthresholdatwhichthechargewillstartorstopcanbesetintheECO+
Settings option, which is found in the ChargeSettings menu.
ItispossibletochargetheEVusingonlysurplusrenewablepower,providingthereissufficient
surplus power todo so.Todothis,setthe Min Green Level to 100%.
TheMin Green Levelistheminimumlevelforthecontributionofgreenenergyattheend
ofthecharge.Theactualgreencontributionforthecharge,isdisplayedwhenthechargeis
complete or the EV is disconnected. For example: With Min Green Level set to 50%,
chargingwillbepausedif700Wofpowerisbeingimportedfromthegridandwillresume
chargingwhen thereis 700Wof power beingexported.
Note: The EV charging standard does not support charging below 1.4kW.

Manual Boost
The Manual Boostfunctioncan onlybeused whencharginginECOor ECO+ mode.Whenboosting,thechargerateissetto
maximum(justlikeFASTmode),untilasetamountofenergyhasbeenstoredintheEV'sbattery.Afterwhich, zappi will revert
back toECOor ECO+mode.
Thisfunctionisusefulifyouarrivehomewithanalmostflatbatteryandwouldliketochargethevehicleimmediatelytoensure
thereis enough charge for ashort trip if needed.
The amount of energy (kWh s) the boost uses can be changed in the Charge Settings/Boost menu.
WheninECOorECO+mode,eachpressofthe
buttonwill cyclethroughtheboostoptionsasillustratedbelow:

Smart Boost
TheSmartBoostfunctionwillchargetheEVwithaminimumkWhfigurebyasettime.SmartBoostisavailableonlyinECOand
ECO+ modes.
The Smart Boost function does not bring the batteryto acertain stateof charge.The target kWh is onlythe
energy added during the charging session.
WheninECOorECO+mode,eachpressofthe
buttonwill cyclethroughtheboostoptionsasillustratedbelow:
Example: It'sasunnySundayandyouwishtoensurethereisenoughchargeintheEVtogettoworkinthemorning(e.g.
15kWh),butinthemeantime,youwanttousethesurplusenergyfromthePVsystemtochargethecar,soyouchoosetouse
ECO+mode.Atsunsettherewasonly10kWhofchargeaccumulated.However,becauseyouactivated Smart Boost,andset
the time you needed to leave for work, zappi automatically boosted the charge in the night to top up the battery to the
required 15kWh by7am.
Activating Smart Boost

the maximum chargerate.

Theboostwillstartatthelatestpossibletimetoachievethesetenergyamount,ifthecurrentchargesession
hasalreadyaccumulatedenoughenergy,theboostwillnotberequiredandsowillnotoperate.
TherequiredenergyandtargettimecanbealteredonlywhenSmartBoostisnotactive.Thesessettingsareinthe
Charge Settings/Smart Boost menu option.

Boost Timer
WhenusingECOorECO+chargemodes,zappi canbeprogrammedto'boost'thecurrentchargeatcertaintimes.When
boosting,the charge rateis set to maximum(just likeFAST mode), regardlessof theamountof availablesurplus power. This
means that powermaybe drawnfrom themains grid supply during boost times.

Therearefoureditabletimeslotswhichcanbe settooperateforcertaindaysoftheweek.

Settingthedurationto0h00 will makethe boost inactive.
Programming Boost Times

Economy Tariff Boosting
Boosting only when economy rate electricity is available can be achieved in one of three ways:
1.
By setting the boost timer to coincide with the economy tariff times. This option should be used only if the
electricitymeter is adual-rate meter (modern meters usually are).
2.
Boost only atsettimesANDif economy rate electric is available.
3.
Automaticallyboostwhenevertheeconomytariffrateelectricityisavailable,regardlessofboosttimes*
*Options 2 and 3 are available only when using the eSense input.
For option 1, the eSense Input in the Advanced menu should be set to
Boost Timer Enable.
WiththeBoost Timer Enablefunctionset, theBOOST TIMERscreenwill
includeanextracolumn(seescreenshot).Theecanbetoggledon/off,ifeis
present,theboostwill activateonly whenthe boost times arevalid andthe
economy rate tariff is available.
Alternatively the eSenseinput can be usedto active the boost whenever the economy tariff rateelectricity is available,
regardlessof boosttimes (option2). Todothis, theeSense Input optionintheAdvancedmenushouldbe settoBoost.
When using this option, the Boost Timer is notneeded.
Boost Time Conflicts
If one or more boost times conflict, the boost will follow the latest time or longest duration.

Time & Date
The date and time are used for the Boost Timer and the savings calculations and therefore should be set correctly.
Intheeventofapower-cut,zappi willstillkeeptrackofthetimeanddateforafewdays,sowhenpowerisrestoredtheclock
will not need tobe reset.
Time is always in 24-hour format but the date format can be changed.
zappi willautomaticallyadjusttheclockforDaylightSavingsTime(DST)aslongasAuto DSTisenabledandthecorrecttime
zone isselected.

The heatericons shownonthe mainscreencanbeindividually setforboth heater outputs. This gives aninstallation specific,
graphicalrepresentationwhichheateris active. Forexample;Heater1 couldbea hot water cylinderandHeater2 could bea
radiator.This function can be accessed via the Settings/Display/Icons menu.
Aswellasbeingabletocustomisetheheatericons,it'salsopossibletochangethegenerationtypefromsolartowind.

Setsthemaximumcurrentthatthezappi willdraw(includingwhenboostingandFASTmode).Thisisusefulifthesupply
current is limited, likea 16A rather than 32A.

Sets the limit that can be drawn from the grid connection (i.e. the maximum import current or the main fuse rating).
Example:A property mayhave agridsupplylimit of only65A,severalappliancesareon andthe propertyisconsuming12kW
(52A)byotherappliancesandtheuserwantstochargeinFASTmode.WithouttheGrid

would exceed the allowed import current. However, with a Grid

settingof 60A, zappi would temporarily limit the
chargingcurrentto8A(about1.8kW)andthemaximumallowedimportcurrentwouldnotbeexceeded.
