GETTING STARTED GUIDE
NI 9796
C Series Wireless Gateway
This document explains how to connect to the NI 9796.
Note Before you begin, complete the software and hardware installation
procedures in your chassis documentation.
Note The guidelines in this document are specific to the NI 9796. The other
components in the system might not meet the same safety ratings. Refer to the
documentation for each component in the system to determine the safety and EMC
ratings for the entire system.

Safety
Caution Observe all instructions and cautions in the user documentation. Using
the model in a manner not specified can damage the model and compromise the
built-in safety protection. Return damaged models to NI for repair.

1. RP-SMA connector for the antenna

Note The status LED currently does not have any function. It is reserved for future
use.
Installing the Antenna
Only use the antenna provided by NI with the NI 9796 (part number 780704-01).
Notice Do not touch the antenna connector when it is exposed.
Notice Do not apply power to or operate the NI 9796 when the antenna is not
installed. Doing so may damage the device.

Complete the following steps.
1. Align the antenna with the RP-SMA connector as shown above and screw on the antenna.
2. Point the antenna up for best coverage.
Inserting the NI 9796 into a CompactRIO
Controller
To use the NI 9796, adhere to the following requirements:
• Use the NI 9796 with a cRIO-9065 CompactRIO controller.
• Insert the NI 9796 into the first slot only.
• Keep the other slots of the controller empty. The NI 9796 must be the only module in the
controller.

Complete the following steps.
1. Insert the NI 9796 into the first slot of the cRIO-9065 controller.
2. Ensure that the other slots of the chassis are empty so that the NI 9796 is the only module
in the controller.
