Navitar Hi-Lite: Lighting for Digital Imaging
StudioQualityLighting
“Lights, camera, action!” There’s a reason why lights come
first in this famous expression. Professional photographers,
television engineers and motion picture studios will all
agree that lighting is a critical element in any imaging
application. In other words, the quality of the image is
directly proportional to the quality of the lighting. This rule
is consistent with all optical applications and is especially
true with digital imaging and high definition applications.
Compared to the human eye, the digital/video camera is less
tolerant of unfavorable lighting conditions. It detects and
processes unwanted information such as flicker and glare*
caused by conventional light sources. Digital imaging
further compounds this problem by compressing the image
before processing it. The best way to compensate for these
inherent problems is to feed the camera the proper amount
of high quality light.
Don’t worry, there’s no need to become a lighting expert.
Navitar can supply you with the tools and suggestions to
master the digital imaging challenges that arise due to poor
lighting conditions.

Before After
A typical example of a video teleconference system
image with standard fluorescent lights.
•Facial features are not distinct.
• Skin tones and colors are inconsistent and lack detail.
•Lighter color shades “flare-out” due to the lack of contrast.
Compare the Difference
Navitar, which has been in the audio visual and machine
vision industry for more than 25 years, knows the value of a
high quality light source. See for yourself the difference the
Navitar Hi-Lite makes to your digital imaging applications.

The same room with the addition of two Navitar Hi-Lite
video lights.
•Shadows are removed and facial features now have detail.
•True color appears and the skin tone becomes more natural
and flattering.
•“Flaring” and “hot spots” are minimized and contrast is
increased between the subject and the background.

ProperColorTemperature
andRendering
Hi-Lites are engineered to provide
the highest quality of diffused light
for digital imaging. Video cameras
attain peak performance between
2800oK to 4100oK. With a color
temperature of 3200oK and a Color
Rendering Index (CRI) of 82, our
bulbs set the standard for high quality
videoconference lighting.
Dimmable
The optional dimming feature on the
Hi-Lite units allows the light intensity
to be adjusted to provide more key
light for people with darker skin tones
and less for those with lighter complexions.
Adjustable lighting also provides essential
fill light, which fills in dark areas and dead spots left by
conventional lighting. The result is a sharp, crisp picture
with a remarkable improvement in contrast and definition.
NoInterference
Unlike conventional fluorescent or incandescent lighting,
the Navitar Hi-Lite uses a high frequency ballast which
provides an even, low flicker output, as well as virtually
silent operation.
LowPowerConsumptionGeneratesVery
LittleHeat
The Navitar Hi-Lite incorporates compact fluorescent
technology. It needs less than 110 watts to produce the
same quality light as Tungsten or Halogen lamps, which
require as much as 500-1500 watts!
Less energy for operation means less heat dissipation.
Even after long hours of operation, the fixture is still cool
to the touch. Subjects remain cool and comfortable for the
duration of the image capturing process.
EasytoInstall
Designed for end-user installation, each Navitar Hi-Lite XL
model** comes equipped with an AC line cord and three
different universal ceiling grid adapters. Just follow the step-
by-step mounting instructions for your specific ceiling type.
This uncomplicated installation process makes Navitar video
lighting simple to install and easy to relocate if necessary.

Glossary
Color Rendering Index (CRI): A rating system that describes
the effect of a light source on the color appearance of objects
(compared to a standard reference source of the same color
temperature). A rating of 100 is the highest possible CRI.
Typical cool white fluorescent lamps have a CRI of 62.
Lamps with rare-earth phosphors can have a CRI of 80 or higher.
Color Temperature: The color a light source appears to be,
ranging from reddish (lower color temperatures) to bluish
(higher color temperatures). Measured in degrees Kelvin (ºK).
Diffused Light: Produces a soft light with soft shadows
while illuminating a relatively large area. Illumination is
indistinct rather than obvious, distinct light beams.
Fill Light: Supplementary illumination positioned to reduce
or eliminate shadows created by key light.
Flare: Over-saturation of light that appears when too much
light is picked-up by a camera’s lens and reflected off its
internal glass elements.
Foot Candle (fc): A measurement of illumination where one
unit is equal to the light of a candle at a distance of one foot.
Glare: A condition caused by light within the visible field
that is brighter than the level of light to which the eyes are adapted.
Key Light: The principal directional light. Usually
positioned off-center and angled towards the subject.
Three-point Lighting: A basic lighting method in which key
light, fill light and back light are all used to illuminate the
subject while providing depth and texture.
FAQs
How long do bulbs last? Are they expensive? Bulbs are
rated at 12,000-hour lamp life. Replacement bulbs can be
purchased from Navitar.
How much do the lights weigh? Will my ceiling support
them? The Recessed Hi-Lite units weigh approximately 16.8
lbs (7.6 kg), The Original Hi-Lite units weigh approximately
8.3 lbs (3.8 kg). Most suspended ceiling grids are rated to
support more than 50 lbs. All units are shipped with a
supplemental support harness.
Which model is best suited for my application? All models
will work in most situations. Which model best suits your
needs depends on requirements such as aesthetics, portability
or cost. For example:
Recessed Hi-Lite: Best for areas where room aesthetics
are paramount, such as high-end boardrooms or
corporate headquarters.
Original Hi-Lite: Best for applications where portability
will be needed, such as portable streaming studios or
use with “roll-about systems.”
What is the warranty period? One year parts and labor,
excluding bulbs. (For a written copy of the complete
warranty, call Navitar at 1-800-828-6778 or 585-359-4000.)

The World Leader in Image Quality
WelcometotheWorldofNavitar
Navitar, Inc. and its subsidiaries form a network of companies that produce leading edge optical and video technologies for
the fastest growing segments of the world’s economy. The Navitar network of companies are market leaders in the design,
development, manufacture, and distribution of advanced optical and video products for fiber optics, photonics, machine
vision, visual communications, and videoconferencing. Look for us at all major trade events for a personal “zoom view” of
our products. For more information, please speak to one of our representatives or use our Optical Wizard online for a
complete look at our technology.
What Our Customers Are Saying
“As a trainer and an educator, spending time explaining the
different technologies involved in videoconferencing, I find all
too often that the lighting is completely overlooked. This is
generally due to the difficulty and expense related to refitting
an existing space with new lighting just to accommodate new
videoconference systems. The quality and distribution of the
lighting can, however, make or break the performance of the
cameras and the codec in a videoconference room. All too
often a $25,000.00 videoconference system is driven into the
dirt by a simple lack of proper lighting. Your products are one
method that provide a cost effective, easily installed solution for
many environments, offering the end user a way to maximize their
investment in the rest of the systems.”
— Scott Sharer, President, Communication Design Group
“We have two of your instruments and they have rescued
our videoconferencing room from standard fluorescent down
light. Now the image that is seen on the far side is crisp, well
textured, and color balanced beautifully. The sites that we have
connected with have commented on how good our room looks to
them. . . . We work with videoconferencing facilities all over the
world, and you can be sure we will recommend your products to
anyone, anytime. Thanks for a great product!”
— Richard Parlato, Executive Vice President, Proximity, Inc.
“Let’s face it, not all conference rooms are the same. Poor
lighting is a common problem and can present challenges for
videoconferencing systems at any price. Navitar has been
instrumental in providing lighting solutions for Polycom,
our resellers and our end-users. We do not hesitate in
recommending this product to anyone.”
— Dan Morris, Senior Product Manager, Enterprise
