position the alarm in the entrance hall between the living
areas (including the kitchen) and the sleeping areas.
Position it as close as possible to the living areas, and
make sure the alarm can be heard by anyone in the
bedrooms. See Figure 1, for example:

THE KITCHEN or BATHROOM as cooking smells or steam
may activate the alarm. DO NOT POSITION AN ALARM
IN THE GARAGE as there is a risk of it being triggered by
exhaust fumes.
Ceiling installation

COMMON CAUSES OF FALSE ALARMS AND
HOW TO AVOID THEM
A smoke alarm detects and reacts to smoke particles

alarm also reacts to dust particles, moisture and other
particlesintheformofpollen,insects,etc.Thesearethe
most common causes of false alarms.

Steam and moisture. False alarms can be triggered if the
smoke alarm is positioned too close to bathrooms or laundry
rooms, or in other places where the ambient humidity is high.
Position the smoke alarm at least 2 metres from bathrooms,
laundry rooms and other places where the ambient humidity
is high.
Dust and dirt.Astheairowsfreelythroughthedetection

pollenparticles.Thiscantriggerfalsealarms.Itcanalsomake
the smoke alarm more sensitive, which can likewise result in
false alarms.
Vacuum clean the smoke alarm regularly – use a plastic
mouthpiece so as not to damage the electronic components.
Make sure not to position the smoke alarm in highly dusty or
dirty places. Place a “cap” over the smoke alarm or remove
it completely if you are carrying out renovation work in your
