Step 1
Insert the SIM card, memory
card, and battery
Use only microSD and microSDHC cards approved by Nokia for use with
this device. Nokia utilises the approved industry standards for memory
cards but not all other brands may function correctly or be fully
compatible with this device.
Memory cards are available as separate enhancements.

Step 2
Charge the battery
1Connect a compatible charger to a wall
outlet.
2Connect the power cord to the device. If the
battery is completely discharged, it may take
a while before the charging indicator starts
scrolling.
3When the battery is fully charged according
to the battery level indicator , disconnect
the charger from the device, then from the
wall outlet.
First start-up
1Press and hold the power key until you feel the device vibrate.
2If prompted, enter the PIN code or lock code, and select OK.
3When prompted, enter the country in which you are located, and the current
date and time.
4The Welcome application opens. Select from the various options, or select Exit
to close the application.
To configure the various settings in your device, use the wizards available on the
home screen and the Settings wizard application (Menu > Tools > Settings wizard).
When you switch the device on, it may recognise the SIM card provider and configure
some settings automatically. You can also contact your service provider for the
correct settings.
You can switch the device on without inserting a SIM card. The device starts up in
the offline mode, and you cannot use the network-dependent phone functions.
To switch the device off, press and hold the power key.

selection, or to scroll left, right, up, and
down on the display. A long press of the
scroll key accelerates the scrolling.

Function, shift, chr, and ctrl
To insert digits or characters printed at the top of
keys, press and hold the function key (1) and press
the corresponding key, or press and hold the
corresponding key only.
To enter only the characters printed at the top of
keys, press the function key twice quickly.
To set the predictive text input on or off, press the function key and the space bar.
To switch between the different character cases, press the shift key (2).
When writing text, press the chr key (3) to insert characters not shown on the
keypad.
To access the shortcuts behind the ctrl key, such as ctrl + c, press the function key
and the chr key to enter ctrl, and then press the desired key, for example c.

One-touch keys
With the One-touch keys, you can access applications and
tasks quickly.
Scroll key lights
When you receive a message or miss a call, the scroll key starts blinking.
When the display lights turn off, the scroll key starts blinking slowly to indicate the
standby mode.

Home screen
From the home screen you can quickly access features that you use the most, and
see at a glance any missed calls or new messages.
The home screen consists of the following:
1Application shortcuts. To access an
application, scroll to its shortcut and
press the scroll key.
2Information area. To check an item
displayed in the information area, scroll
to it and press the scroll key.
3Notification area. To view the
notifications, scroll to a box. A box is
only visible if there are items in it.
You can define two home screen modes for
different purposes, such as one mode to
show your business e-mail and notifications,
and another to show your personal e-mail.
This way, you do not have to see business-
related messages outside office hours.
To change from one home screen mode to
another, scroll to and press the scroll
key.
To define what kind of items and shortcuts you want to see on the home screen, and
to set the appearance of the home screen, select Menu > Tools > Modes.
Find contacts
To find contacts in the home screen, start entering the name of the contact. The
device gives you suggestions on matching contacts. Scroll to the desired contact.
This feature may not be available in all languages.
To call the found contact, press the call key. For other actions, scroll right and select
the desired action.

Access tasks quickly
Whenever you see the icon on the home
screen, or in the Contacts, or Calendar
applications, scroll right to access a list of
available actions. To close the list, scroll left.
When you navigate in these applications, to
go back to the previous level, scroll left.
Transfer content
from another
device
With the Switch application, you can transfer content from a compatible Nokia
device to your Nokia E71 using Bluetooth connectivity or infrared. The type of
content that can be transferred depends on the device model. Select Menu > Tools
> Switch, and follow the instructions on the device display. If the other device
supports synchronisation, you can also synchronise data between the two devices.
When you transfer data from your previous device, you may need to insert a SIM
card. The Nokia E71 does not need a SIM card for transferring data.
You can also use Nokia PC Suite to copy content from a compatible Nokia device. For
more information, see www.nokia.com/pcsuite.
Set up your e-mail
With the e-mail wizard, you can set up your business e-mail account, such as
Microsoft Outlook, or Microsoft Exchange; and internet e-mail account, such as
Google e-mail services.
To start the e-mail wizard:
1Go to the home screen, scroll to the e-mail wizard, and press the scroll key.
2Enter your e-mail address and password. If the wizard is not able to configure
your e-mail settings automatically, select your e-mail account type and enter
the related settings.
If your device contains any additional e-mail clients, those are offered to you when
you start the e-mail wizard.
When setting up your e-mail, you may be prompted for the following information:

If you are setting up your business e-mail, ask your company IT department for
details. If you are setting up your internet e-mail, see your e-mail service provider’s
website for details.
Camera
Select Menu > Media > Camera.

To capture an image, use the display as a viewfinder, and
press the scroll key (3). The device saves the image in Gallery.
To zoom in or out before capturing an image, scroll up or down.
When capturing close-up images, press the T key (4) to focus on
the subject before capturing the image.
To record videos with the camera, select the video mode from
the toolbar on the display, and press the scroll key. To stop the
recording, select Stop.
Download!
Select Menu > Download!.
With Download!, you can browse, download, and install items, such as the latest
applications and related documents, to your device from the web. The items are
categorised under catalogs and folders provided by Nokia or independent service
providers. Some items may be chargeable, but you can usually preview them free of
charge.
Download! uses your network services to access the most up-to-date content. For
information on additional items available through Download!, contact your service
provider, or the supplier or manufacturer of the item.

Only install and use applications and other software from sources that offer
adequate security and protection against harmful software.
GPS
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a world wide radio navigation system. Your
Nokia E71 has an internal GPS receiver.
Maps
Select Menu > GPS > Maps.
With Maps, you can see your current location on the map, browse maps for different
cities and countries, search for addresses and different points of interest, plan routes
from one location to another, and save locations and send them to compatible
devices.
Check the availability of this function from your local network operator.
Tips for efficient use
To access the profiles, press the power key briefly.
To switch the device to the Silent profile, press and hold #.
To search for items in your device or on the internet (network service), select Menu
> Office > Search.
To copy text, press and hold the shift key, and scroll to highlight the word or line of
text you want to copy. Press the function key + chr + c. To insert the text into a
document, move to the correct place and press the function key + chr + v.
When browsing web pages with the Web browser or maps in the Maps application,
press *to zoom in and #to zoom out.
There is a small mirror next to the camera flash. You can use it when taking a self-
portrait.
