BayStack600 Series Wireless LAN products that might not be included in the
documentation for the product you are installing.

Software Versions
Be sure to upgrade:
•BayStack AP Manager
•Access point firmware
•Windows driver
•Windows Utilities
•PC Card firmware (For all access points and PCs in your wireless network)

Caution: When upgrading software version 3.40 from a previous version, you
must upgrade both your client and access point software to version 3.40.

Features of Software Version 3.40
The following five software components have all been revised and updated as part
of software version 3.40:
•BayStack AP Manager
Version 3.40 features include configuration and management of 802.11 WEP
encryption controls, the ability to manually add access points to the list so the
access points can be managed across subnets, verification that all access
points are online, ability to identify the access point to which a particular user
is associated, configuration of the 10BASE-T and 10BASE-2 Ethernet port
selection, and failover configuration of both 10BASE-T link integrity and
uplink ping.
•Access Point firmware
Version 3.40 features include support for 802.11 Wired Equivalent Privacy
(WEP) encryption controls for both authentication sequences and data
packets, full support for 802.11 power saving, full management capability,
full support of the 802.11 SNMP MIB, failover detection, ability to manage
the access point from a mobile unit associated with the access point, and
10BASE-T or 10BASE-2 Ethernet port selection.
•Windows driver
Version 3.40 features include a new integrated installer and uninstaller,
support for WEP encryption for both authentication sequences and data
packets, full support for 802.11 power saving, IP subnet roaming
enhancements, new configuration panels, support for Windows 98, enhanced
link quality and connection quality measurements, and operation of the driver
now in I/O only mode.
•Windows utilities
Version 3.40 features include a new integrated installer and uninstaller,
management of 802.11 WEP encryption keys, site survey features for forcing
connection to an access point and disabling autoroaming, and IP subnet
roaming enhancements that can provide pop-up notification of subnet changes
and automatic IP release and renewal when the mobile station roams between
access points on different IP subnets.

•PC Card firmware
Version 3.40 features include improved performance, enhancements to
support 802.11 WEP encryption, and full support for power saving.
To obtain the full benefits of all the features of Software Version 3.40, you must
upgrade all of the components throughout your network.
Accessing Software Version 3.40 on the Web
The BayStack 600 Series Wireless LAN products are field-upgradable. Firmware
upgrades are available on the Nortel Networks Web page at the following URL:
http://www.nortelnetworks.com/servsup
To access software from the Nortel Networks Web page:
1. In the Access by Product category, select BayStack Workgroup Products.
2. In the BayStack Workgroup Products category, select BayStack 6xx; and
then click View.
3. Scroll down to Software; then scroll down to BayStack 600 Series
Complete Update v3.40.
Nortel recommends the complete update selection because all of the
components have been updated. The complete update is a 12 MB
self-extracting file. You can also choose individual files by clicking on the
appropriate software that you want to download.
4. Click on the exe link to download the complete upgrade software
package.
Note: If you upgrade the PC card firmware in the PC card in your laptop with
Version 3.40, you must also install the upgraded drivers. Older drivers do not
operate with Version 3.40 firmware.

Upgrading your Access Point from Version 3.2x to Version 3.40
To upgrade from Software Version 3.2x to Software Version 3.40, you must use a
10BASE-T network. If you do not use a 10BASE-T network, the software
upgrade process does not allow you to upgrade your BayStack 600 Series
Wireless LAN products.
Refer to the appropriate README file and the documentation for installation
procedures.
The recommended procedure for upgrading to Software Version 3.40 is:
•Install the BayStack AP Manager Version 3.40.
•Update the access point firmware to Version 3.40.
•Update the PC Card firmware to Version 3.40.
Upgrading Your PC Software from Version 3.2x to Version 3.40
Refer to the README files for the appropriate driver and documentation for
instructions to install the new version of the software.
To upgrade the PC card in your laptop to Version 3.40 software:
• Run Setup.exe to install the 3.40 version drivers and utilities.
Upgrading Your PC Card Firmware from Version 3.2x to Version 3.40
Refer to the appropriate PC Card firmware README files and documentation for
instructions to install the new version of the software.
To upgrade the PC card in your laptop to Version 3.40 software:
• Run aspflash.exe (in the DOS command prompt safe mode) to install the
3.40 version drivers and utilities.
You must restart your computer to perform this operation.

Upgrading Firmware in NetWave Products
If you own Netwave AirSurfer Plus products, you can upgrade to the 802.1l
access point firmware and drivers. Because of differences in the firmware that
have developed over time, a three-step process is required to move to the latest
access point firmware. Refer to the access point README file for instructions.
Managing Your Access Point Using SNMP
You can assign an IP address to the BayStack 600 Series Wireless LAN Access
Points and manage the access point using the Java-based SNMP manager software
program (BayStack AP Manager). The BayStack AP Manager utility supplied
with both of the BayStack access points manages and configures the devices.
Along with the BayStack AP Manager, the MIB files (entitled bs650-660ap.mib
and 802-11.MI2) are on the BayStack 600 Series Wireless LAN Software CD
included in your BayStack 600 Series Wireless LAN package. The
bs650-660ap.mib and 802-11.MI2 files, allow you to compile the private
extensions into your SNMP management system.
To use the BayStack AP Manager to manage access points, make sure that the
TCP/IP protocol is installed on your management PC, and you have a valid IP
address assigned to your network adapter.Otherwise, the BayStack AP Manager
will not run.
Using the WEP Keys
When WEP is enabled, successful communication between wireless LAN
devices is determined by the key values. In order for two devices to be able to
communicate, the active key values must match. The active key selection sets
which key a device uses for encoding transmissions sent by that device.
Therefore, it is possible for two devices to have different active key selections and
still be able to communicate with each other. As long as the actual key values
match, the two devices are able to communicate. For more information, refer to
the appropriate user manual.

Software Version 3.40 includes a 32-bit Miniport driver that supports Windows
95, Windows 98, and Windows NT4.0. Bay Networks does not have a driver
for the Windows for Workgroups, WindowsCE,Windows 3.x, and MS-DOS
environments for the BayStack 650 and BayStack 660 Wireless LAN products.
Wireless LAN Product Compatibility
The BayStack 650 Wireless LAN products and the BayStack 660 Wireless LAN
products are both IEEE 802.11 compliant, allowing for higher performance and
interoperability with other IEEE 802.11-compliant products. Refer to Table 1 for
product compatibility among products that might exist in your wireless LAN.

Known Issues
This section describes the known issues that are included in the version 3.40
software release.
Managing Multiple Access Points
After using the multiple configuration wizard to manage a group of access points,
the management workstation remains logged in to the access points in the group.
This login status automatically clears after a short time interval. If your access
points are password protected and you want to clear the login status immediately,
use the multiple configuration wizard to apply the Action, Reboot command to the
same group of access points. This procedure secures the current management
station and ensures that a password is required to again manage the access points.
Managing Access Points Through Telnet
If you are managing through Telnet, after a certain amount of time, you might find
that an access point is no longer accessible. Use the AP Manager Program to
reboot or turn the power off and then on again. After a power cycle, the access
point can be identified and managed through normal procedures, either through
the network or through a wireless connection.
Managing Access Points Through Third-Party SNMP Management
Tools
If you are using a third-party SNMP management tool to manage your access
points, you must make sure that the access points you want to manage are not
password protected.
Running AP Manager on a Windows NT 4.0 Server
AP Manager application does not run on a Windows NT 4.0 server.
