Formerly known as the Contivity 1700 and Contivity 1740, these platforms will be replaced with the
VPN Router 1750.
Customer Notification of the decision to Manufacture Discontinue the Product
noted above:
Last Time Order Date: July 29, 2005
Manufacture Discontinue (MD) Date: December 31, 2005
End of Life (End of Support) Date: December 31, 2010
Last Supported Software Release: 8_00, and 8_05.xxx sustaining releases will be the
last new versions of software that will be
supported on the 1700 and 1740 platforms. As
of version 9_00 of VPN Router software the
1700 and 1740 platforms will no longer be
qualified against new feature releases. For more

Introduction
This document is the official notification for the Manufacturing Discontinuation of the VPN Router
(Contivity) 1700 and 1740 platforms. This notice includes information regarding their successor the
VPN Router (Contivity) 1750.
All versions of the Nortel VPN Router (formerly known as Contivity) 1700 and 1740 product are
being replaced in the Nortel VPN Router product line with the VPN Router 1750. The VPN Router
1750 provides similar performance to both the VPN Router 1700 and 1740. The VPN Router 1750
provides dual 10/100 Base T Ethernet ports on the base system as well as providing 4 open slots for
I/O expansion. The chassis footprint of the VPN Router 1750 is identical to the VPN Router 1740.
The 1750 utilizes a 3U chassis; the 1700 utilized a 2U chassis. The power requirements of the VPN
Router 1750 are identical to both the 1700 and 1740.
Like its predecessors the VPN Router 1750 is offered in both a 5 tunnel version suitable for
“routing” applications and a 500 tunnel version suitable for Remote Access VPN applications.
The VPN Router 1750 can be considered a functional replacement for either the VPN Router 1700
or the VPN Router 1740; however there is a configuration file difference due to the new slot

configuration. Slot-0/port-1 and Slot-0/port-2 used for the integrated Ethernet ports is unique to
the 1750.
The VPN Router 1750 will ship from the factory with version 5_05.180 of the Nortel VPN Router
operating software. Nortel Support will have a version of 4_90 VPN Router operating software
available for those customers that may require it.
Manufacture Discontinue (MD) – This notice serves as formal communication of Nortel
Networks’ intent to MD the product(s) noted. No further orders will be accepted as of the Last
Time Order Date shown above and no further shipments made after the product has been
discontinued. The MD of these products should not be interpreted as the discontinuance of any
Nortel Networks agreements to support the existing field population. Services to the existing
product base will continue to be provided until the End of Life (EOL) date shown above.

Software Dependencies
At the time that this notice is being issued the current version of VPN Router O/S supported on the
1700 and 1740 is the 5_00 feature release and 5_05.xxx maintenance releases. It is Nortel’s intention
to release and qualify three additional feature releases of software on the 1700 and 1740 platforms,
6_00, 7_00 and 8_00 feature releases and their subsequent 6_05/7_05/8_05.xxx maintenance

streams. At the time of this writing it is expected that a 9_00 feature release will be available in
approximately the first half of 2007. Nortel does not anticipate qualifying the 9_00 feature release on
the VPN Router 1700 and VPN Router 1740.
In addition to future releases of software, support for the VPN Router 1750 is also going to be
ported back the 4_90.31x, please contact Nortel support for further information.

Customer Actions
Customers who need to qualify the VPN Router 1750 prior to putting it into their production
network in place of a 1700 or 1740 should work with their Nortel account representative to obtain
one for evaluation as soon as possible.
Customers who need a FIPS certified 17xx product should place orders to cover their requirements
through the end of 2005 using the VPN Router 1700 or VPN Router 1740. FIPS certification is not
expected to occur with the 1750 until late 2005.
