The X-Series Component Speakers
Thank you for choosing the NVX X-Series. Our X-Series is a crowning achievement of modern loudspeaker engineering.
– Decades of research, development and installation experience have combined to create a truly remarkable component
speaker system. Our uncompromising approach to manufacturing is unique in the industry, and shines through brightly in
the quality and performance of the X-Series. We are proud to build the nest speakers on the market today, and we are
condent you will soon be proud to own them.
Great loudspeakers begin with great engineers, and for the X-Series we partnered with the very best, bringing together
experts from around the world. The X-Series began in Denmark as a vision of our renowned European Hi-Fi team; dreams
soon gave way to reality as our extraordinary engineers transformed decades of knowledge and experience into a state-of-
the-art component speaker with warmth and crisp detail that is simply stunning.
To optimize our speakers for the harsh automotive environment, we brought them home to the United States. We refused to
compromise the sonic performance or durability of our product, so we assembled a team of engineers who have designed
some of the most ground-breaking and acclaimed products in car audio history. Advanced design techniques were used to
dramatically improve the off-axis response for an enhanced stereo image.
Read on to learn about the features incorporated into our X-Series component speakers that separate them from the
competition.

The Tweeter
29mm Silk Dome
For decades silk has been the reference standard for tweeter composition, as it offers crisply detailed highs with
characteristic warmth. With a diameter in excess of 1-1/8”, the wide dome of the tweeter enables it to play at high volumes
with distinct clarity and improves off-axis response for enhanced imaging.
Ring Radiator
Although the tweeter is by far the smallest speaker in a complete audio system, it’s actually responsible for playing the larg-
est range of frequencies. The behavior of the tweeter when playing different frequencies can vary dramatically.
– Lower notes tend to resonate from the center of the dome, while higher frequencies are produced by the edges and
surround. The ring radiator design prevents the surround from decoupling at higher frequencies, improving the clarity and
delity at these higher notes in addition to relieving strain on the surround.
Dimpled Dome
Since most factory speaker locations are less than ideal, it can be very challenging for the installer to obtain proper imaging.
To ensure optimal performance even in subpar locations, we incorporated a dimple into the center of the dome. This im-
proves the dispersion pattern for improved response both on and off axis.
Robust Tweeter Chamber
Great care was taken to maintain even compression on the dome throughout the full range of excursion, resulting in more
linear movement and more dened highs. The ample tweeter chamber also helps lower the resonant frequency, which im-
proves imaging and offers a seamless transition from the midbass drivers.

4
The Woofer
Cone
After testing scores of different cone materials, we decided on a custom blend of nely milled pulp and Egyptian Papy-
rus bers. This stiff yet lightweight material produces spectacularly accurate midbass with a rich, natural tonal quality
prized by audiophiles. The smooth matte nish of the cone offers a sleek, modern accent to the interior of any car.
Surround/Suspension
To achieve the most authentic and accurate sound, we engineered our midwoofer to be as responsive as possible. We
utilized a special low damping rubber surround that maintained linear movement better than any other material we’ve
tested. The X-Series also features a relatively soft spider to reduce unwanted mechanical stiffness.

What is this shorting sleeve?
Copper Shorting Sleeve
The shorting sleeve is a conductive copper sleeve placed in the air gap between the pole piece and the voice coil former to
reduce inductance. Inductance can best be understood as the change in magnetic energy that occurs as the voice coil moves
in and out of the air gap. In most drivers this energy is absorbed by the voice coil, causing impedance rise, introducing
distortion and reducing the woofer’s ability to play at the top of the midbass spectrum. In the X-Series midwoofer, the shorting
sleeve simply absorbs changes in inductance, optimizing the sound quality, output potential and frequency response of
the driver.
Perhaps the most distinguishing component of the X-Series midwoofer is the innovative copper shorting sleeve system. This
technology prevents a rise in inductance caused by the movement of the driver, which has several positive impacts on the
woofer’s performance:
• Improved power delivery to the voice coil
• Decreased inductive distortion
• Improved cone linearity
• Improved high-end extension
• Decreased risk of overheating

6
So why does it work?
●Improved power delivery to the voice coil
►Any increase in inductance correlates to an increase in voice coil impedance, meaning increased resistance to
the input power. By preventing inductance rise, we effectively increase the amount of power carried to the voice
coil, increasing the output potential of the woofer with each given watt.
●Decreased inductive distortion
►When inductive energy is introduced into the motor structure, it causes the midwoofer to produce sounds and
artifacts at higher frequencies outside of the normal playback range. Our copper shorting sleeve absorbs these
changes in inductive energy, resulting in crisp, distortion-free sound.
●Improved cone linearity
►A great deal of care was taken during the research and development process to ensure that the movement of the
cone is as linear as possible. Since inductance is a change in magnetic energy, it’s easy to see how undesired
inductance can alter the movement of the cone. By using our shorting sleeve, we absorb these changes in
magnetic ux and prevent modulation of the cone resulting in tighter, more accurate mids.

7
●Improved high-end extension
► The low-pass lter in a standard crossover network is basically just a coiled conductive wire with an iron core –very
similar to the design of a voice coil. When the inductance of the voice coil increases, it begins to lter out notes at
the top of the midwoofer’s frequency range. Our copper shorting sleeve eliminates these variations in inductance,
allowing the woofer to play as it was intended.
●Decreased risk of overheating
► In addition to the positive impact the shorting sleeve has on the speaker’s sound quality, it also acts as an effective
heat sink to carry heat away from the voice coil, which contributes to improved performance and durability.
If it’s so great, why don’t others use it?
Where we see an opportunity to build a better product, other manufacturers see an opportunity to maximize prots.
Shorting sleeves require additional materials and add complexity to the manufacturing process. Rather than skimp on
the shorting sleeve and make inferior midwoofers, we ultimately decided to create a masterpiece. The most
experienced engineering team in the industry has painstakingly designed our X-Series components, and we rmly
believe that you will hear the difference.

Custom Low Turbulence Cast Aluminum Basket
Our custom basket offers several distinct advantages over traditional designs. We purposefully chose an especially
open basket to improve airow to reduce compression of the motor structure for both improved cone control as well as
reduced back-wave interference. The 3-dimensional cast design dramatically increases the strength and rigidity of the
basket while simultaneously reducing resonance. We chose aluminum, the industry standard for cast speaker baskets,
as it offers an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio and is non-ferrous, thus eliminating risk of magnetic interference with
the motor structure. The unique cast aluminum mounting ring offers a sleeker and more modern aesthetic than typical
bulky rubber or plastic designs.

The Crossover
A well-matched crossover separates a good pair of speakers from a truly spectacular component system. Rather than
utilize some cookbook formula, our engineers meticulously developed a custom crossover network that beautifully
complements the natural roll-off of the tweeter and midwoofer. We used only the nest components in the construction
of the crossover to ensure the purest high-delity audio playback possible. Mylar and polyester capacitors with tight tol-
erances of ±5% or less were utilized to ensure that each set of speakers embodies the spectacular sound and reliable
performance of the NVX X-Series.
Optimized for In-Vehicle Use
The X-Series are car speakers, so it only seemed logical to design them to perform optimally in a real car environment.
Other manufacturers perform all their measuring and metering with the speakers mounted to a at bafe board on a test
bench. While these speakers may sound great on a showroom oor, they are virtually incapable of producing that same
quality in your car.
To attain the ultimate performance, we averaged the response from eight different positions within the car. First we
measured the response from the driver side tweeter at both of the driver’s ears, then at each of the passenger’s ears.
We took the same measurements with the tweeter located on the passenger side, and then repeated the entire process
for the midwoofer. Our engineers took this raw response data, along with the 3-dimensional locations of the speakers in
the vehicle, and used advanced computer modeling to achieve harmonious sound from the entire component system.

Off-Axis Tweeter Boost
Compensating for a less-than-ideal tweeter position is one of the most common and difcult challenges facing an installer.
When a tweeter is positioned off-axis, the listener will experience the most attenuation (quieting) at the highest frequencies.
Many tweeters on the market give you the ability to boost output of the entire tweeter by up to 6 dB to help compensate for
this loss. However, since there is virtually no loss at the lower frequencies close to the crossover point, this boost results in
harsh and unbalanced highs.
NVX is different because our tweeter boost follows a slope which adds 6dB up at 20kHz, 3dB at 10kHz, and offers no boost
at 6kHz, where the frequency is too low to experience severe off-axis attenuation. This boost makes for smoother and more
even high notes, allowing you to enjoy an ideal stereo image from a less-than ideal location.
Switch down position for 0 dB Gain Switch up position for +6 dB Gain at 20kHz

11
Low Crossover Point
Our crossover point is particularly low at 1500Hz. While this is too low for most tweeters to operate safely, our tweeter has an
extremely low resonance frequency, and we achieved optimal performance by adding an additional 6dB of electrical
attenuation to our tweeter. This low crossover point helps raise the soundstage for a more natural stereo image, while also
reducing potential phase anomalies caused by the distance between the tweeter and midwoofer.
Bi-Amplification Enabled Design
Some audiophiles prefer an extra level of control to mold the sound to their taste. The low-pass and high-pass lters on
our crossover are completely isolated, enabling you to amplify the tweeters and midwoofers separately while minimizing
the risk of both harmonic and intermodulation distortion. Our crossover is exceptionally optimized for both the drivers
and the automotive environment, and we are condent that the results from passive bi-amplication of the X-Series are
superior to any active setup.
Unique Protection Technologies
Through innovative engineering, we were able to integrate several unique technologies which offer an unparalleled level
of protection for any tweeter, midwoofer and even amplier attached. Our engineers adapted techniques used in
professional and home audio to design the world’s premier car audio crossover.

12
One-of-a-Kind Midwoofer/Amplifier Protection
High-Fidelity Tweeter Protection
Although woofers are larger and much more robust than the tweeters they complement, you can still experience the occasional
blown midwoofer due to misuse, improper setup, or even an unexpected voltage spike. When this happens the inherent construction of
the low-pass lter will cause the amplier power to feed back into the amp, causing a potential short circuit. Our engineers
included a fuse in series with the low-pass lter; in the rare event your midwoofer should blow, this fuse will pop and cut off the
power owing back to the amp. The NVX X-Series is the only component system on the market that offers protection
for your amplier.
To protect our tweeter, we adapted a design commonly found in high-powered pro audio speakers. The key to this protection
feature is an extremely durable bulb which increases in resistance when more power is run through it. We chose to use this
bulb instead of the traditional polyswitch to preserve the delity of the music. We also included a fuse and resistor in an
innovative circuit to offer increased protection for the tweeter and the bulb. If the power begins to exceed the capacity of the
tweeter, the bulb will increase in resistance and limit the power. If the power begins to exceed the capacity of the bulb, the
fuse will blow and send all the power through the resistor; this will quiet the tweeters signicantly, notifying you that there is
an issue while protecting all the components. With NVX, a power spike just requires a replacement fuse, not a replacement
tweeter.
