GENERAL
Provideappropriatefire extinguishersand installthem in
convenientlocations. Use an extinguisher ratedABC by
NFPA.
Makesurethatallfastenersonthe enginearesecureand
accurately torqued. Keep guards in position over fans,
drivingbelts, etc.
If itisnecessaryto makeadjustmentswhile the engineis
running,use extremecautionwhencloseto hotexhausts,
movingparts, etc.
Usedengineoilshavebeen identifiedby somestateand
federal agencies ascausing cancer or reproductive
toxicity. Whencheckingor changingengineoil, takecare
not
to
ingest,breathethe fumes, orcontactusedoil.
Do not work on this equipment when mentally or
physically fatigued,or after consuming any alcohol or
drugthat makesthe operation of equipmentunsafe.
BATTERIES
Beforestartingwork on the engine, disconnectbatteries
to preventinadvertentstartingof the engine. Disconnect
negative cable first.
DONOTSMOKEwhileservicingbatteries.Leadacidbat-
teriesgive
off
ahighlyexplosivehydrogengaswhichcan
be ignitedby flame,electrical arcingor by smoking.
Verifybattery polarity before connecting battery cables.
Connectnegative cable last.
PROTECT AGAINST MOVING PARTS
Do
notwear
loose
clothingin
the
vicinity
of
movingparts,
such asPTO shafts,flywheels,blowers,couplings, fans,
belts, etc.
Keepyour handsaway from movingparts.
FUEL SYSTEM
DO NOT
fill
fuel tanks while engine isrunning.
DONOTsmokeor useanopenflameinthevicinityof the
engine or
fuel
tank. Internalcombustionenginefuelsare
highlyflammable.
Fuelline must be ofsteelpiping, adequately secured, and
free from leaks.Pipingatthe engineshouldbe approved
flexibleline.Donotuse copperpipingfor flexiblelines
as
copper
will
work harden and become brittle enough to
break.
Be
sure all fuel supplies have a positiveshutoff valve.
Benzeneand lead, found in somegasoline,havebeen
identifiedbysome stateandfederalagenciesascausing
cancer or reproductivetoxicity. When checking, draining
or adding gasoline, take care not toingest, breathethe
fumes, or contact gasoline.
EXHAUST SYSTEM
Exhaust productsof any internalcombustionengine are
toxic and can causeinjury, or death
if
inhaled. When
operatingthe engine in a confined area, make sure the
ventilationsystem is operatingproperly.
DO NOT use exhaustgasesto heata compartment.
Makesurethatyour exhaustsystemisfreeof leaks.Make
sure thatexhaust manifolds are secure and are not
warpedby boltsunevenlytorqued.
EXHAUST GAS
IS
DEADLY!
Exhaustgasescontaincarbonmonoxide,apoisonousgasthat
can cause unconsciousnessand death. It is anodorlessand
colorlessgas formedduringcombustionof hydrocarbon
fuels.
Symptomsof carbonmonoxidepoisoningare:
Dizziness Vomiting
Headache

If
youexperienceany ofthesesymptoms,get out intofresh air
immediately, shutdown the unit and do not
use
it until it has
beeninspected.
The best protection against carbon monoxide inhalation is
proper installation andregular, frequent inspections of the
completeexhaustsystem. Ifyou notice a change
in
thesound
or appearance of exhaust system,shut the unitdown immedi-
atelyandhaveitinspectedandrepairedat once byacompetent
mechanic.
KEEP THE UNIT AND SURROUNDING
AREA

onor near
the
engine.
Remove all unnecessary grease and
oil
from the unit.
Accumulatedgrease and oilcan cause overheatingand
subsequentengine damage and presenta potentialfire
hazard.
