SECTION 1.0INTRODUCTION
1.1 PURPOSE OF THISGUIDE
Thepurpose of thisguideisto provideinstallation proceduresand basic operating and
servicing instructionsfor theONICON Model D-1401 and D-1402 PortableMetering
System.
1.2 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The D-1401 and D-1402 PortableMetering Systemsare designed to measure theflow
rateof conductiveliquids in multiplepipe sizes. They can also beused to perform
flow profiling for analysis of flow measurement problems.
The D-1401 Portable Metering System includes a F-1100 singleturbineflow meter
and can beused to measure1.25 inch and larger pipe sizes.
The D-1402 PortableMetering System includesaF-1200 dual turbine flow meter and
can beused to measure2.5 inch and larger pipe sizes.
Theflow meter portion of thesystem istypically inserted into a filled and pressurized
pipeviaan existing oneinch minimum diameter full port ball valve. For pipesthat
can be easily drained before and after
measurement, the flow meter can be inserted
into aoneinch minimum diameter outlet that
can accept a one inch NPT male threaded
adaptor. For filled and pressurized pipes
without installed full port valves, wet
tapping installation hardwarekitsare
available from Onicon.
Thedisplay moduleincludesan LCD
display, control switchesand cable. A single
9-volt alkaline battery, located in the display
modulebattery compartment, powersthe
completesystem, including theflow meter.

SECTION 2.0SYSTEM OPERATION AND SET-UP
2.1 SYSTEM OPERATI ON
The D-1401 and D-1402 Display ModuleLCD display showstheflow rateasa
number representing thefrequency output signal, in Hertz, from theflow meter.
The D-1401 Display Moduleshowsthefrequency output signal of thesingle turbine
from theF-1100.
The D-1402 Display Moduleshowstheaveraged output from
both turbines. Thissystem also hasthecapability of
displaying theindividual output from thetop or bottom
turbineby using theselection switcheson theDisplay
Module.
Thisfrequency output isthen converted to gallonsper minute
for the pipe size being measured via the laminated
conversion chart included with the system.
Pleasecontact Onicon to obtain conversion factors for any
pipesizesnot listed on thechart, or if you requirea flow rate
unit of measureother than gallonsor liters.
2.2 I NTI AL SYSTEM SET-UP
1. Insert theflow meter into thepipeto be measured. (Seemanual section
entitled “Flow Meter Information” for specific information on installation
proceduresand recommended insertion depths.)
2. Plug theDisplay modulecableconnector into the connector on theflow meter
output cable.
3. Turn theDisplay modulepower switch to the “ON” position and verify that a
number appears on theLCD display.

2.3 BASIC FLOW MEASUREMENT
1. Turnthepower switch(left) to“ON” position.
2. Set themiddle switch to “AVG” and allow 45 secondsfor the flow meter
circuitry to stabilize.
3. Record theaveragereading in Hz on thedisplay and refer to the laminated
conversion chart to calculate the flow rate. Please note that the frequency
number displayed may vary rapidly (by asmuch as10-15%) asaresult of
theactual flow conditionsin thepipe.
4. Locatethepipesize being measured on thelaminated conversion chart and
determinethe“Z Factor” for gallonsper minute(or liters per minute) for
that pipe size.
5. Then multiply theZ factor by the averagereading in Hz from step 3 to
obtain theflow ratein gallonsper minute.
2.4 FLOW PROFILING MEASUREMENT
D-1401 / D-1402 Systems:
Significant information about thenatureof flow acrossthe entirepipediameter
can beobtained by taking flow measurementsat incremental insertion depths.
Depending on thepipesizeto be measured, determine an appropriate
measurement increment that will providetherequired information. (For
example: when measuring theflow profileof an 8-inch pipe, measurements
may bemadeat 1 inch incrementsto providethedesired profile.)
Withtheflow meter properly inserted in the pipe, loosen thehot tap adaptor
lock nut and push themeter into the pipeuntil the end of themeter touchesthe
far pipewall. Using thisasastarting point, pull themeter back out by the
desired increment of measurement and measure the flow rate. Repeat this
processuntil readings havebeen madeacross theentireinterior diameter of the
pipe.
In largepipeswheretheflow meter isnot long enough to touch thefar pipe
wall, measurements can be made using the near pipe wall as a starting point.
Push theflow meter into the pipejust until aflow reading is obtained on the
display. (For the
D-1402 systems, thetop turbineoutput can beobserved to seewhen it clears
the pipewall and beginsto spin.) Beginning at that point, start making
measurements at the desired incremental insertion depths.

When using aD-1402 system, theindividual top and bottom turbine
frequenciescan beobserved asareference to theamount of rotational swirl
that is present at each insertion depth measurement point.
To utilize this function, set themiddle switch to “SELECT”. The right switch
can then betoggled between “TOP” and “BOTTOM” to display the
individual turbinefrequencies.
A stable, uniform flow velocity at themeasurement depth will beindicated by
having the same or very close (+/- 10%) to thesamefrequency reading on both
thetop and bottom turbine.
A significant differencebetween thetop and bottom turbinefrequency
numbers will indicatethepresenceof flow turbulence andswirl at the
measurement depth. The top and bottom turbines rotatein oppositedirections.
Turbulenceand swirl will either increaseor decrease thespeed of rotation of
oneof theturbines and will havetheopposite effect on theother turbine.
2.5 SYSTEM STORAGE AND MAINTENANCE RECOMMENDATION
1. Alwaysstorethesystem in itscarrying case when not in use.
2. Beforelong-term storage of the system, blow all excess water from the flow
meter turbine assembly and wipe the flow meter stem assembly dry with a
clean cloth. Donot put any lubricantson the turbine assembly. Oil based
lubricants will damage the flow meter’ s o-ring seals.
3. If storing thesystem for long periods of time, removethe 9-volt battery from
the Display Module and store it separately.
4. Theflow meter’shot tap adapter should bepushed completely down over the
turbineassembly and locked so that theturbinesareprotected when moving
thesystem to anew location or when storing thesystem.
5. Theflow meter turbines, bearingsand shaftscan becleaned using a30 percent
whitevinegar to 70 percent tap water solution. An old toothbrush can beused
to lightly brush around thebearings. Rinsewith clean water and blow off
excess water before storing.

SECTION 3.0INSTALLATION, REMOVAL & ADJUSTMENT
CAUTION
Insertion Flow Metersmay often beinstalled in pipeswhich are under high
pressure. Accidentswith thesesystemscan causeseriousinjury or death. Only
personsexperienced with high pressure systemsand related knowledgein the
heating, cooling and fluid meteringfieldsshould attempt to install adjust or remove
the flow meter. Refer to the installation drawings before performing any work on
these meters.
3.1 SITE SELECTION
Theclearancerequired for installation istypically 30-36” from the pipewall to thenearest
obstruction above thevalveassembly. Thisclearance dimension will increasewith large
diameter pipes.
Theenvironment should befree of corrosive liquids/fumes, temperature extremes and heavy
vibration. The following diagramsshould beused asaguide to theproper location for installing
the meter.

3.2 MECHANICAL INSTALLATION
To takeadvantageof the ONICON Flow Meter’sbuilt-in Hot Tap feature, it must beinstalled
through an isolation valve. Thelocation must allow sufficient overhead clearancefor meter
removal.
IMPORTANT! A full 1” opening is required to clear theturbine assembly. Make sure that your
valvesand fittings arefull port and at least 1” in actual internal diameter. Also, notethat an
oversized access hole can causeundesirableturbulence.

Typical ONICON Installation Hardware Kits:
ONICON’sINSTL1 Standard

pipeisfor usein adrained, non-
pressurized system. The access hole is
drilled (1” minimum) prior to installation
of the1” NPT branch outlet, close nipple
and full port ball valve. Once the
isolationvalveisinstalled, the piping
system can beflushed and pressurized.
Theflow meter may now beinserted or
removed by hand without having to drain
the system. Please read all instructions
beforeproceeding with meter insertion.
ONICON’sINSTL2 Hot Tap Installation
Hardwarekit for black iron pipeoffers
an alternativeinstallation when it isnot
practical to drain or relieve the pressure
in thesystem. In thiscase, a1¼” branch outlet, close nipple and 1¼” full port ball valveare
installed first. Then, ahot tap drilling apparatus can beused to drill a1” diameter holethrough
thevalve, without shutting down or draining thepipe.
(SeeAppendix A for List of Available Onicon Installation HardwareKitsfor other typesof pipe
materials and applications.)
After fitting thenecessary plumbing hardware, flush theentire system so that it is freeof flux,
solder and slag. Prepare to install theflow meter by loosening theclamping nut and withdrawing
theturbineassembly fully into thehot tap adapter. Next, thread theadapter on to theball valve
using apastetypethread sealant. Do not useTeflon tapebecausetorn strandsof thetape may
wind around theturbine, slowing down or even stopping the turbine.
Check theinstallation for leaksby slightly opening theball valve. An ‘O’ ring in thehot tap
adapter seals the meter stem against leakage. If thereareany leaksaround theclamping nut or
stem, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO STOPTHE LEAKAGE BY OVERTIGHTENING THE
CLAMPING NUT. Damage tothisnut or the clamping ring under the nut may prevent
theassembly from properly holding the meter in the pipe. Theclamping nut isnot part of the
sealing mechanism. Any leaksin thisareaindicatethat the‘O’ ring isnot sealing properly and
you must contact thefactory for assistance.

3.3 INSERTION OF THE METER
CAUTION
SYSTEM MAY BE UNDER HIGH PRESSURE. When adjustingthemeter positionor removingit,
besure to hold the electronicsenclosurefirmly by hand before SLOWLY loosening thepositioning
clamping nut. Failure to do thiswill allow the pressure to suddenly and rapidly forcethe meter from
the pipe causing seriousinjury. Themeter could alsobe damaged or break apart causing a break in
the water seal with the resultant lossof large amountsof water. Thehand effort required to hold the
meter will be 0.11 times the pipe pressure.
Begin by calculating theeffort that will be required to hold themeter. Establish adequatefooting
for thistask, taking extra caution when working from aladder or platform. Use thefollowing
formula:
E = 0.11 x P Where:E= effort in pounds
P= system pressurein poundsper square inch
Example: In a300 PSI system, 33 pounds of effort is required to insert themeter into the pipe.
CAUTION
Do not release the flow meter until you have tightened the position clamping nut enough to hold the
flow meter in thedesired position. Thiswill require lesstorque than you might think, sobe careful
not to overtighten it and risk damagingthe adapter, nut or stem.

3.4 REMOVAL OF THE METER
CAUTION
Remember, the meter may be under high pressure, and while removal of the meter isbasically the
reverse of the insertion procedure detailed above, care must be taken to ensure that the meter is
supported against the pipe pressure beforetheposition clamping nut isloosened. Failureto do this
will allow the pressure tosuddenly and rapidly force the meter from thepipecausing seriousinjury.
CAUTION
Prior to removal of themeter, makesure that you arestanding on asecureplatform and haveboth hands
available to manipulate the flow meter.
First support the flow meter against the pipe
pressure by holding the electronics enclosure firmly
in hand BEFORE loosening the position clamping
nut. The effort which will be required is the same as
that required for insertion of the meter and should be
calculated according to the formula in the prior section
covering insertion of the meter. This effort will be 0.11
times the pipe pressure. If your footing is not secure,
or if your ability to hold the meter limited for any
reason, DO NOT loosen the clamping nut.
SLOWLY loosen theposition clamping nut and carefully and
slowlyallow thepressure to forcethemeter out of thepipe.
Thisisnot at all difficult, but you must not let go of themeter until it is fully withdrawn into the
hot tap adapter. After themeter iscompletely withdrawn, you may closetheisolation ball valve.
Themain causeof damageto meterscomesfrom accidentally closing thevalveon theturbine
assembly. To avoid this, gently rotate themeter by twisting theelectronicsenclosureback and
forth (twist thestem, do not bend it) whileyou slowly close thevalve. If thevalvetouchesany
part of themeter, you will feel it asyouaretwisting themeter. If thevalve touchesanything, it
meansthemeter isnot fully withdrawn. Usually agentletwisting motion whilewithdrawing the
meter will clear any obstruction and permit themeter to withdraw completely. (Excessivebuild-
up on thestem may requirethehot tap ‘O’ ring to belubricated with silicone.)
After the valve is completely closed, you can safely unscrew the hot tap adapter from the valve.
Partially unscrew theadapter and allow pressureto vent from thehot tap adapter. Therewill be
very littlewater in thehot tap adapter; however, asmall bucket or pan should beheld under the
valve to catch any spilled water.

In hot water systems, even a small amount of water can cause seriouspersonal injury. Use extra
caution when working with hot water meters.

CONDITIONS OF SALE
1. ACCEPTANCE: Thefollowing Conditionsof Saleapply to all salesof ONICON’sproducts. Theseprovisions shall apply even if
ONICON fails to object to provisions appearing on, incorporated by, referenced in, or attached to Buyer’s purchaseorder form. Buyer’sacceptanceof
delivery of ONICON’s products constitutes itsacceptanceof theseConditionsof Sale.
2. DELIVERY AND TITLE: All product shipmentsareF.O.B. shipping point and titlepassesto the Buyer at the time ONICON delivers the
merchandiseto thecarrier. Risk of lossor damageto theproduct passesto theBuyer at thetimeONICON deliverstheproduct to the carrier. The Buyer
immediately upon receipt should inspect all shipments, and should there be any evidence of damage or loss in transit, Buyer must file claims or tracers
upon carrier. ONICON will assist in tracing shipments upon request.
3. LIMITED WARRANTY: ONICON warrantsthat for aperiod of two (2) yearsfollowing thedateof original shipment of an ONICON
product: (i) theproduct will conform to ONICON’sstandard written specificationsapplicableto such product in effect on thedateof Buyer’s order, or as
modified by ONICON’squotation or Buyer’spurchaseorder accepted by ONICON, (ii) theproduct will befreefrom defectsin workmanship, and (iii) that
ONICON hastitleto the product prior to shipment to theBuyer; provided, however, that thewarranties provided herein shall bevoid and may not apply in
the event Buyer misuses or damagesaproduct, including, but not limited to, any useby theBuyer of aproduct for an application other than oneof atype
approved by ONICON. ONICON’ssoleliability and Buyer’ssole remedy for any breach of theforegoing warranty isfor ONICON to repair or replace, at
ONICON’s option, any defectiveproduct that isreturned to ONICON during thewarranty period. EXCEPT AS MAY BE SPECIFICALLY AGREED BY
ONICON IN WRITING IN RELATION TO EACH SALE, NO OTHER WARRANTIESSHALL APPLY, WHETHER EXPRESSED, IMPLIED OR
STATUTORY, AND THERE SHALL BE NO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESSFOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.
4. REMEDIES: ONICON’sOBLIGATION UNDER THE FOREGOING WARRANTIESISLIMITED SOLELY TO REPAIR OR
REPLACEMENT, AT ONICON’s OPTION, OF DEFECTIVE OR NONCONFORMING PRODUCTS. ONICON SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR
CONSEQUENTIAL, INDIRECT, PUNITIVE, INCIDENTAL, OR SPECIAL DAMAGESWHETHER FOUND ON CONTRACT, TORT OR ANY
OTHER THEORY OF LAW. No products shall bereturned to ONICON without itsprior consent and transportation and insurancecostsshall beprepaid.
Any repair or replacement of ONICON’sproductsunder the foregoing warranty will beat no chargeto theBuyer provided such repair is done at the
ONICON factory or authorized service center. ONICON products that arerepaired or replaced under thiswarranty will bereturned to Buyer viathesame
method of shipment use to return the product to ONICON. Repair or replacement of ONICON products is conditioned upon ONICON’sacknowledgement
of any alleged defect or nonconformanceduring thewarranty period and issuanceof aReturn Authorization number. All product returns must reference
theReturn Authorization number on theoutsideof theshipping carton and on any paperwork referencing thereturn.
5. PRICESAND PAYMENT TERMS: Thepricesset forth in the most recent quoteor acknowledgement asapplicable, supersedeall
previousprices or quotations. All quotationsaresubject to changeor withdrawal without noticeexcept as may be specifically noted on thefaceof the
quotation. Theprices shown do not includesales, exciseor government charges payableby ONICON to Federal, State, or local authority. Any such tax or
chargenow or hereafter imposed upon thesaleor shipment of theproducts under thiscontract will beadded to thepurchaseprice. Buyer agreesto
reimburse ONICON for such tax or chargeor provideONICON with an acceptableexemption certificate. Payment of invoiceswill bedue30 days from
thedateof shipment of theproductscontained therein. In the event that payment of an invoiceisnot received by theinvoiceduedate, ONICON will
assess a late fee not to exceed 1.5% per month or 18% per year, or the maximum allowable by law whichever is lower.
6. CANCELLATION: Buyer may cancel itsorder, or any part of it, by sending written noticeof cancellation to ONICON and paying a
reasonable cancellation fee as determined by ONICON. The reasonable cancellation fee will reflect, among other factors, the expenses already incurred
and commitments madeby ONICON, sales and administrativecosts and profit asdetermined by ONICON. If Buyer received areduced pricebased on the
quantity of productsordered, but has not purchased the applicablequantity at thetimeof cancellation, Buyer will pay thepriceit would havepaid had
ONICON’s salepricebeen based on thequantity actually purchased.
7. CHANGES: If Buyer makesany changes in itsdrawings, designs, or specificationsapplicablein any contract with ONICON that causean
increase or decreasein thecost of performanceof thecontract, or if such changesresult in rework or obsolescence, an equitableadjustment shall be made
to thecontract. Such changesaresubject to ONICON’s prior written consent.
8. EXCUSABLE DELAY: ONICON shall under no circumstanceberesponsiblefor failureto fill any order or orders when dueto: fires,
floods, riots, strikes, freight embargoesor transportation delays, shortage of labor, inability to securefuel, material supplies, or power at current priceor on
account of shortagesthereof, actsof God or of thepublic enemy, any existing or futurelawsor actsof theFederal or StateGovernment (including
specifically, but not exclusively, and orders, rulesor regulationsissued by any official or agency of any such government) affecting the conduct of
ONICON’s businesswith which ONICON in its judgment and discretion deemsit advisableto comply as alegal or patriotic duty, or dueto any cause
beyond ONICON’sreasonablecontrol.
9. PATENTS: ONICON shall defend all suitsor proceedingsbrought against Buyer or itscustomers arising from claimed infringementsof
any patent, trademark, servicemark or copyright for any product furnished by ONICON and shall indemnify it against all costs, fees, and damages on the
condition Buyer promptly notifies ONICON in writing and provides information and assistanceto enableONICON to conduct thedefense, provided that
ONICON shall haveno such obligation in caseof infringement resulting from ONICON’sconformancetospecial requirementsof Buyer. If ONICON is
not ableto settleany such suit or proceeding on acceptableterms, ONICON may, at itsoption, require return of theinfringing product and refund the
purchase price to Buyer less a reasonable allowance for depreciation or use.
10. FAIR LABOR STANDARDSACT: ONICON representsthat all products delivered under thiscontract arefurnished in accordancewith
theapplicableprovisionsof theFair Labor StandardsAct as amended.
11. APPLICABLE LAW: Thisdocument and any resulting contract shall begoverned by and construed in accordancewith the laws of the
State of Florida. Thecourts of theStateof Floridaand thefederal courtslocated in Florida shall havejurisdiction and venue with respect to litigation to
this contract. In theevent of litigation, theprevailing party shall beentitled to recover attorney’sfeesand costsfrom thenon-prevailing party, including
appel late attorney’ s fees.
12. MODIFICATIONS: TheseConditionsof Salealong with theprices, quantitiesdelivery schedules and other provisionsand instructions
in applicablequotations by shall constitutetheentireagreement between ONICON and Buyer pertaining to any resulting contract. They can bemodified
only in writing.
