Safety and Installation Manual
Open enewable PV modules supports two different mounting methods:
5.1 Method “A”
➢
Method “A” is only applicable to modules equipped with 1st and 2nd generation frames. Please consult drawing 4
or contact your sales representative to determine which frame equips your module.
➢
Modules shall be mounted using 4 holes located on the rear side of the long frame parts. Use 4 M6 stainless
steel bolts per PV module, with nuts, washers and lock washers see drawing 1).
5.2 Method “B”
➢
The selected mounting structure shall be sufficiently-dimensioned, load-bearing and permanently corrosion-
resistant.
➢
The solar module must be aligned in such way to avoid any total or partial shadowing of the module, even
temporary. Shadowing may lead to damage the solar modules, failure of the PV generator and loss of output.
➢
The modules must be attached to the substructure without tension and deformation at no less than four points,
and the clamp surface per attachment point on the module must be at least 750 mm².
➢
The centreline of the clamps should be centred with the area marked as per drawing 3. Some models have a
pre-printed mark on the frame, for easier mounting.
➢
Follow the mounting instructions of the substructure manufacturer. Use appropriate tools and ensure the torque
is within the manufacturer specified range for the module fixing clamps and other screw connections.
➢
The additional loads which arise by way of the weight and the structural attachment of the PV system are to be
included in the structural analysis of the overall construction.
➢
Attachment with clamps on the narrow sides of the solar module may not be performed.
➢
Attach the solar modules so that they with-stand all foreseeable loads and weather-induced influences.
➢
The substructure and the solar module must have the same heat-expansion coefficient as the aluminum frame.
Contact corrosion between the solar module and the substructure is to be avoided when different materials are
used. Lightning protection is recommended according to local regulations.
➢
The solar module may not stand in tail water or condensation water.

6.0 Electrical Installation
➢
PV modules of different size and/or electrical configurations must not be used in the same system.
➢
Open Renewables® PV modules are factory-equipped with cables and connectors for easy interconnect in series.
➢
Cover all modules in the PV array with an opaque cloth or material before making or breaking electrical
connections.
➢
Open Renewables® recommends that all wiring be double insulated with a minimum temperature rating of
110°C. All wiring should use flexible copper (Cu) conductors. The minimum size should be determined by the
applicable codes. We recommend a size not less than 4mm2. The insulation type should be appropriate for the
type of installation method used and must meet SKII (Safety Class II) and IEC 61730 requirements."
➢
Match the polarities of cables and terminals when making the connections; failure to do so may result in
damage to the PV module.
➢
Ensure that all electrical connections are secure and tight.
➢
A bypass-diode is integrated in one of the 2 PV module junction boxes. This diode is not user-replaceable. The
junction box must not be opened in the field. Doing so will void the warranty.
➢
When connecting module in series be aware the module voltages will be summed. The maximum number of PV
modules being connected in series must be calculated in line with the applicable regulations in such a way that
the specified maximum system voltage of the PV module and all other electrical DC components will not be
exceeded in open-circuit operation.
➢
Not more than 2 PV modules or module strings shall be connected in parallel without using series fuses rated at
20 Ampere minimum.
➢
PV modules with a suspected electrical problem should be returned to Open Renewables® for inspection and
subsequent actions as described in the Open Renewables® LIMITED WARRANTY FOR PV-MODULE(S).
6.1 Safety-related grounding of module frames
➢
Open Renewables® strongly recommends grounding of PV module frames even when applicable regulations,
code requirements and standards do not require any safety-related grounding. On 1st and 2nd generation frames
the long frame rails are provided with holes should be used for grounding purposes only and in accordance
with the local regulations, code requirements and standards, as per drawing 4, bellow. On the 3rd generation
the any of the corner pieces can be used to connect the module to ground using a self tapping screw, ST 4.8
with a length between 6 and 16mm.

7.0 Operation
➢
Before connecting a PV system to the grid the entire system must be checked and tested according to the
applicable regulations for low voltage electrical systems and for grid-connected power generators.
➢
Depending on local utility policies the connection to the grid and start-up of the PV system may only be
performed by an authorized installer.
8.0 Maintenance
➢
Open Renewables® PV modules do not require any routine maintenance. However, Open Renewables®
recommends that PV systems are checked periodically - at least once a year - and any significant changes are
reported immediately. Pay special attention to loose or corroded mechanical and electrical connections.
➢
The performance of the PV modules might be affected by dust, dirt or other deposits on the surface. In this case
Open Renewables® recommends cleaning the surface of the modules with cold water and a sponge. Do not use
harsh cleaning materials such as scouring powder, steel wool, scrapers, blades or other sharp instruments to
clean the glass surface of the module. Use of such materials will void the product warranty.
