Read the Owner’s Manual and related documentation
carefully before attempting to install or operate the
PENTEK Variable Frequency Drive (VFD). Make sure
that you have a full knowledge of the equipment,
safety information, and instructions before using this
product. Carefully read and follow all safety instructions in
this manual and on the VFD.
This is the safety-alert. When you see this symbol on
your VFD or in this manual, look for one of the
following signal words and be alert to the potential for
personal injury:
warns about hazards that will cause serious
personal injury, death or major property damage if ignored.
warns about hazards that can cause
serious personal injury, death or major property damage if
ignored.
warns about hazards that will or can cause
minor personal injury or property damage if ignored.
The word NOTE indicates special instructions which are
important but not related to hazards.
To avoid serious or fatal personal injury and possible
property damage, carefully read and follow the safety
instructions.
Risk of electrical shock if the front cover of
the VFD is open or removed while the power is on or the
inverter is running. The front cover of the VFD must be
closed during operation.
Risk of electrical shock if the front cover
is opened or removed while the inverter circuits are
charged, even though the power is off to the unit.
• Beforestartinganywiringorinspectionprocedures,
allow at least 10 minutes for the capacitor to discharge
after turning off the power to the VFD. Capacitor voltage
is dangerous and lasts for some
time after the power is turned off.
• Afterallowingatleast10minutesforthecapacitorto
discharge and before starting any wiring or inspection
procedures, check for residual voltage with a voltage
tester.
Risk of electrical shock if VFD is connected
to the power wiring before hanging the box. Alwayshang
the VFD box before connecting the wires to it.
Risk of electrical shock if the VFD is handled
or service with wet or damp hands. Alwaysmakesure
your hands are dry before working on the VFD. Perform all
dial setting and keying operations with dry hands.
Risk of electrical shock. Do not change the
cooling fan while power is on to the VFD.
Risk of electrical shock. Do not touch the
printed circuit board when power is on to the VFD.
Risk of electrical shock. When measuring
the main circuit capacitor capacity, do not touch the motor
terminal immediately after powering off. DC voltage is
applied to the motor for one second at powering off and
will energize the terminal.
Fire hazard if installed with incorrect or
inadequate circuit breaker protection. To make sure of
protection in the event of an internal fault in the VFD,
install the VFD on an independent branch circuit protected
by a 15 amp circuit breaker (Model PPC7-1-7A3, – 1/2 to 1
HP)ora30ampcircuitbreaker(Model PPC7-1-13A2 , 1-1/2
and 2 HP), with no other appliances on the circuit.
Risk of component explosion and fire
if the cables are connected incorrectly or the wrong
voltage is applied.Applyonlythevoltagespecifiedtoeach
terminal. Connect cables to the correct terminals
as specified in this manual.
Risk of burns. The drive (inverter) can become
hotduringnormaloperation.Allowittocoolfor10minutes
after shut-down before handling it to avoid burns.

This product and related accessories contain
chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer,
birth defects or other reproductive harm.
NOTICE: To avoid damage to the inverter or problems with
the drive:
• Connecttheoutputcablestothemotorasfollows:Red
toU,BlacktoV,YellowtoW.Anyotherorderwill
reverse the motor rotation and may damage the motor.
• Donotmodifytheequipment.
• Donotusepowerfactorcorrectioncapacitorswiththis
VFD; they will damage both the motor and the VFD.
• Donotremoveanypartsunlessinstructedtodoso
in the owner’s manual.
• Donotuseamagneticcontactorontheinverterfor
frequent starting/stopping of the inverter.
• DonotinstalloroperatetheVFDifitisdamagedor
parts are missing.
• BeforestartingaVFDthathasbeenstoredforalong
time, always inspect it and test operation.
• Donotcarryoutamegger(insulationresistance)
test on the control circuit of the inverter.
• Donotallowforeignobjectswhichcanconduct
electricity (such as screws and metal fragments) inside
the VFD box at any time. Do not allow flammable
substances (such as oil) inside the VFD box at any time.
Ground the VFD according to the requirements of the
NationalElectricalCodeSection250,IEC536Class1,or
the Canadian Electrical Code (as applicable),
and any other codes and ordinances that apply.
Allinstallation,servicework,andinspectionsmust
be done by a qualified electrician.
Carefully read and follow all safety instructions in this
manual or on drive.

HOW IT WORKS
This Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) provides constant
water pressure under varying service conditions in pumping
applications. It drives a standard pump according to
pressure needs received from an accurate transducer. Motor
speed varies to deliver constant water pressure (within the
limits of the pump) despite variations in water demand and
flow.
When the system flow demand is light, the pump runs
atarelativelylowspeed.Assystemdemandincreases,
the motor speed increases to maintain the preset system
pressure.
In general, when there is a demand for water, the Control
will be operating. However, with light demand, the pump
may cycle on and off at its minimum speed. This will not
damage either the motor or the pressure transducer.
INSTALLATION FOR SUBMERSIBLE
PUMP APPLICATIONS (See Figure 1)
Install the Transducer
1. Disconnect the electrical power at the main circuit
breaker.
2. If there is water in the system, drain it.
3. Thesystemrequiresapressuretank;forbestpressure
regulation,usea6gallontankorlarger.Youcanalso
use an existing tank of much larger capacity. Set the
tank pre-charge at 70% of the set-point pressure (42 psi
whentheControlissetat60psi–seeTable3,Page7).
4. Install the pressure transducer in a tank tee or in a tee in
the water main downstream from the tank and less than
10 feet from it. Do not install any elbows between the
tank and the pressure transducer. The VFD includes a
10 foot length of cable to connect the transducer to the
VFD.
NOTE: If you have a pressure gauge in the system,
make sure that the gauge and the transducer are on
the same level. If the gauge is higher or lower than
the transducer, the gauge pressure will not match the
transducer’s signal. The VFD will, of course, always be
governed by the transducer’s signal.
NOTE: The pressure transducer is pre-calibrated; no
adjustment is needed.
NOTE:Beforeconnectingthepumptothesystem,‘pumpout’thewelltocleanit.Besurethatthetransducer
is connected to the VFD and sees 0 PSI pressure. Throttle the pump discharge to reduce the load on the motor.
Once the well is clean, proceed with plumbing the well.

INSTALL THE CONTROL
Step 1. Mount the Box
Mount the VFD vertically and as close as possible to the
mainCBpanel.

The VFD weighs about 20 pounds. Mount it on a solid
support with three mounting screws.
NOTE: Mount the VFD with the wiring ports down. Leave
atleast3”of clearance to the front and sides of the box for
heatradiation.TomaintaintheNEMA3RratingonModels
PPC7-1-7A3-3-AandPPC7-1-13A2-3-A , you must use liquid-
tight conduit for all connections to the VFD.
NOTE: Allowaccesstothe230V1øelectricalsupply
wiring and to the submersible motor wiring. Use only
copper wire rated at 75° C. Maximum wire length between
the Control and the pump motor will depend on the
motor used, but must meet National Electrical Code (NEC)
or Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) and all local code
requirements as applicable.

Wiring Connections
Step 2. Run the Cable
• TheinputfromtheCBPanelmustbe8”fromthemotor
wiringand8”fromallotherelectricalwiring.Maintain
the8”separationwhencrossingotherwiring.
•Crossallbranchcircuitsat90°.
•Themotorwiresshouldexitthebuildingassoonas
possible.
NOTE: The input wiring to the VFD must meet NEC
requirementsfora230V/50or60Hz/1øcircuitcarrying15
amps for Model PPC7-1-7A3or30ampsforModelPPC7-1-
13A2 . For correct wire sizing from the VFD to the motor,
see Table 2, Page 4.
Hazardous voltage inside VFD; can shock,
burn, or kill. Capacitors inside the VFD will hold lethal
voltage even after power has been disconnected. After
disconnecting the power, allow 10 minutes for the
capacitors to discharge before removing the VFD cover.
The ground terminals in the VFD must be connected to
the motor, metal plumbing, or other metal near the motor,
using a wire at least as large as the motor cable wire.
Except for setting parameters and certain testing, disconnect
the incoming power before working on or around the
system. Testing and servicing of the Control must be done
by a qualified electrician.

Step 3. Connect the CB Panel to the VFD
NOTE: Do not wire to a sub-panel - only to the main
breaker panel.
1. Ground the VFD back to the building’s own ground
(thatis,tothesystemgroundfromtheCBpanel,going
to the system ground rod).
2. Useadedicated230Vbranchcircuitdirectlyfromthe
mainCBpanel:
 15ampCBforModelPPC7-1-7A3.
 30ampCBforModelPPC7-1-13A2.
3. Powermustbeoffatthemaincircuitbreaker.
4. Remove the Control cover and clean out the box: NO
OFFCUTS or debris should be left in the box!
5. Feed the wires through the appropriate conduit hubs
and into the VFD. Connect them to the terminal blocks
asshowninFigure4.TomaintaintheNEMA3Rrating
on Models
PPC7-1-7A3-3-AandPPC7-1-13A2-3-A , all
wiring for these models must be run to the VFD in
liquid-tight conduit with liquid-tight conduit connectors.
NOTE: Either add terminals to the input cables (as
shown), or make a wire loop in the input cables prior to
tightening the terminal screw.
6. Tightentheterminalstothetorquespecificationsshown
below.
 •Input/outputpowerterminals:13in-lbs.
 •TransducerCableterminals:5in-lbs.
7. AllwiringmustcomplywithNECorCECandalllocal
codes, as applicable.
Step 4. Connect the VFD to the Motor
1.
Connect the motor leads in the order as shown.
NOTE: Connecting the wires in the wrong order may
damage either the motor or the drive and will void the
warranty.
2. Connect the motor ground to the inverter’s grounding
terminal as shown.
3. Groundthemotortothewellhead.
4. Bundlethegroundandmotorwires
5. AllwiringmustcomplywithNECorCECandalllocal
codes, as applicable.
Step 5. Connect Transducer Cable and Set Parameters
1. Connect the Transducer Cable as shown. Note the
color coding of the wires.
2. Do not disturb the factory installed jumpers.

3B. 1/2 and 1-1/2 HP Controls: Go to Step 4, below.
4. Installtheboxcover.Besurethatalltabsareintheslots

models)orknob(NEMA3Rmodels)atthefront.

OPERATION
NOTE:Beforeconnectingthepumptothesystem,‘pump
out’thewelltocleanit.Besurethatthetransduceris
connected to the VFD and sees 0 PSI pressure. Throttle the
pump discharge to reduce the load on the motor. Once the
well is clean, proceed with plumbing the well.
NOTE: Althoughthesystemmaintainsconstantpressureat
the transducer, additional demands (more faucets opened,
more sprinklers on line, etc.) may cause pressure drops
in other places in the system. This is due to limitations in
the plumbing and will be more noticeable the further the
demand sites are from the transducer. This is true of any
system; it is not a system failure.
NOTE: Youmustadjustthetankpre-chargewheneverthe
pressure set point has been changed. The tank
pre-charge must be 70% of the pressure set point.
(This value is the pressure set point multiplied by .70. For
example:Ifthepressuresetpointis60psi,thetank
pre-chargewouldbe60X.70=42or42psi.

• TheVFD’sparametersarefactorypresetfor1/2and
1-1/2 HP pumps. Do not reset anything for these
horsepowers.
• For3/4,1,and2HPpumps,onlyresettheparameters
listed in Table 4; use the default settings for all other
parameters.
NOTE: Turn on the power to the control before starting this
procedure.
NOTE:Afteryouhavepushed‘SET’inStep3,pushing
‘MODE’willaborttheoperationandreturntheparameter
to whatever the previous setting was. The Display goes to
‘E’(Error).
Push‘MODE’asecondtimetogoto‘basic’displaymode
(Hz,Amps,orPSI).

STOP/RESET: This is an Emergency Stop (“E-stop”). It does
notcutoffpower,butitwillstopthepump.Afterpressing
‘STOP/RESET’,turnoffthepoweratthecircuitbreaker
panel and wait at least one minute before turning the
power on again.
NOTICE: When you turn the power on again, the pump
will start up normally; be sure you have corrected the
emergency condition that made you stop it.

Step 2: Turn the knob. The number on the display will
change. Continue to turn the knob until the number for
the parameter you wish to set is displayed.
NOTE: The numbers will be in sequence, but will not
be consecutive (that is, some numbers are skipped).
Step 3: Once the number of the parameter you wish to
setisdisplayed,push‘SET’todisplaythecurrentvalueof
that parameter.

Step 4: Turn the knob until the desired setting is
displayed.
NOTE: The speed at which you turn the knob determines
the rate at which the setting changes. For instance,
turning the knob slowly might change the setting by
decimals, while turning the knob rapidly might change
the setting by tens. This speeds up the setting process
while preserving accuracy in the setting.

Step 5: Once the correct setting is displayed, push
‘SET’againtocapturetheparameter.Thedisplaywill
alternate between the parameter number being set and
the setting selected.

PENTEK Control LED Error Codes and
System Faults
Most faults will automatically reset, allowing the VFD to
automatically restart and continue normal operation.
If a fault does not reset, the drive will make 10 attempts
to restart the pump and will then go into a lockout
condition requiring manual reset.
If your VFD locks out, turn off the power to the VFD,
wait60seconds,andturnitbackon.TheVFDshould
operate normally. If not, call your installer for assistance.
The faults listed below require a manual reset (that is,
they do not attempt to reset automatically). Follow the
indicated suggestions. If the error code won’t clear,
callPentairCustomerServiceat1-866-973-6835.
