2. Introduction
2.1 WhatisGreenkeeperWin?
GreenkeeperWinisaPC‐computercontrolsystemwithasophisticatedthirdgenerationdecoder
system.Byclickingabutton,theprogramscreatedonaPCaresentwithinamatterofsecondsto
theValveControlUnit.Fromthere,electricpulsesaretransmittedviaasingle2‐wirecabletoas
manyas250decodersthatenergize/deenergizethesolenoids.Thisenablesyoutoavoidexpensive
installations,difficultmodificationsordisruptiveearthworksduringextensionsaswellasallcosts
incurredthereby.
AssistedbyyourPCandtheGreenkeeperWinsoftwareyoucreateanirrigationprogramaccording
toyourwishes.TheprogramisthendownloadedviatheserialporttotheVCU.
2.2 Functionaldescription
TheGreenkeeperControlSystemconsistsofthefollowingcomponents(minimumconfiguration):

Thesystemcancontrolamaximumof245decoders.
TheVCUfeedsthedecoderwithmodulateddirectcurrentviaa2‐wiredecodercable.The
modulateddirectcurrentcarriessignalsthatcontaininformationforthedecoder.
Theinformationconsistsof:
1.Decoderaddress
2.Openorclosecommand.
ThebrainoftheGreenkeeperControlSystemisthePC.
TheGreenkeeperWinprogramrunsonthePC.
Themasterdataforthecompleteirrigationequipmentareenteredduringtheinstallation.
Theseinclude:

ThedifferentvalvesorsolenoidsaregivenauniquenameinGreenkeeperWinandareassignedtoa
decodernumber.
GreenkeeperWinwillusetheabovedatatocalculatethedurationifyouentertherequired
precipitationortheprecipitationifyouentertheduration.
TheirrigationprogramsthatyoucreatewillbedownloadedtotheVCUviaaserialport.
TheVCUwillthenindependentlycontroltheirrigationaccordingtothedatayouenteredwhilethe
PCcanbeusedtoserveotherpurposes.
DuringirrigationtheVCUstoresdatafromtheexecutedprograms,e.g.thevalveopeningand
closingtime,precipitationdensity,etc.
YoucanretrievethedatastoredinthePCandprintit.
TheWindowsbasedprograminterfacerequiresnospecialcomputerskills.
Ontheotherhand,familiaritywiththeWindowsenvironmentcanmakeyourworkwith
GreenkeeperWinmucheasier.
DataisenteredbyclickingwiththemouseinaDataEntryorOption/Selectionfield.Youtheneither
typethevaluesorselectoneoftheproposedvaluesinanOption/Selectionfield.
Greenkeeperistheonlyprogramonthemarketofferingarealisticgraphicrepresentationofthe
areasirrigated.Inthegraphicyoucanplacevalvesymbolsintheactuallocationswherethe
solenoidsaresituated.Byclickingthesymbolyoucanopenandclosethevalve.
Itisalsopossibletoenergizeindividualvalvesusingahandterminalconnectedtoafieldconnector.
Moreover,youcancontroltheVCUbymobiletelephone*orbyaPCoveratelephoneline.Touse
thisfunctionyouonlyneedamodemandaterminalprogram,suchastheoneincludedinthe
Windowsinstallationpackage.
TheVCUhasadditionalconnectionoptionsforexternalsensors,e.g.precipitationmeter,
anemometer,flowmeter,andpressuregauge.ThesensorssendthevaluesmeasuredtotheVCU.
ThedatacanberetrievedintheGreenkeeperprogram.Youthendecidewhetherthedatawillonly
berecordedorfedintotheIrrigationControlSystemtomodifytheprogramoperation.
Aflow‐checkdevicebuiltdirectlyintothesupplypipeallowstheusertocarryoutdecoderandvalve
tests.

GreenkeeperWinsupportsthebidirectionaldecoders(PD/F‐1).Ofcoursethestandarddecoders
fromGreenkeeperWincanalsobeusedwithGreenkeeperFB.Butifyouwanttousethenew
featuresitisnecessarytoinstallthebidirectionaldecoders.It’spossibletomixbothkindsof
decodersinonesystem,too.
2.3.1 Whatmeansbidirectionaldecoder?
ThebidirectionaldecoderPD/F‐1sendsitsstatusinformationbacktotheVCU.Thisinformationwill
beprocessedbythesoftware.VCUanddecoderareinpermanentcommunication.Allbidirectional
decoderswillbeperiodicallyinterrogated.
Duetotheuseofthenewdecoders,incombinationwithGreenkeeperWin,acheckofthedecoder,
solenoids,electricalvalvesandthepumprelaysisfeasible.Thismakesiteasytocheckallimportant
partsofyoursystempermanently.Theusergetsquickandspecificinformation.Atanearlystage
problemscanbeidentifiedandbeloggedinareport.Depending’sonthesettingsofthesoftware
thesystemcanbeautomaticallyswitchedoffandsendingadditionallyamessagebytelephone.
Thestatusinformationofthebidirectionaldecoderswillbeperiodicallyintegrated.Dependingon
thisstatusinformation(combination)theVCUreactsaccordingtothesoftwaresettings.

Disconnectthegreen‐yellowearthconductorfromthesocket.
GroundingwillbefacilitatedviatheVCU.
Plugthesuppliedsurgeprotectorinthesocket.
MounttheValveControlUnit(VCU)toitslocationonthewall.
Connecttheavailabledecodercabletoterminal34/35.
Ifyouneedtorunmultipledecodercables(upto3units)useterminals36/37and38/39

ConnecttheexternalinterfacessuchasRaingaugeTypeMiniClick
