Risk of explosion in the medium to be pumped as a result of increased pressure
With installation on the exhaust side, there is a risk of the exhaust pressure of the vacuum pump ex-
ceeding the atmospheric conditions. The ignition temperature of the medium to be pumped is lowered
in the suction chamber.
If the ignition temperature of the medium to be pumped falls below a temperature of +200 °C, there is
a risk of explosion, and consequently serious injury.
►Ensure that the ignition temperature of the medium to be pumped is maintained above a temper-
ature of +200 °C at 2000 hPa abs.
WARNING
Risk of explosion due to escaping process media
The manufacturer has no influence on the media being supplied. Process media are often toxic, com-
bustible, explosive and/or reactive in other ways. There is a risk of serious or even fatal injuries if
these media are permitted to leak into the atmosphere.
►Refer to the corresponding safety information prescribed in the local guidelines. This information
can be obtained from the Department of Health and Safety at Work of the user.
►The exhaust line must be connected to the suction system for hazardous media on the system.
►Perform regular inspections to ensure that there are no leaks at the connection of the suction
pipes.
WARNING
Risk of explosion from the inlet of reactive, explosive or other hazardous gas/air mixtures
Uncontrolled gas inlet of air or gases containing oxygen from defective hose cables may lead to the
formation of explosive gas/air mixtures in the vacuum system, and to an oil deficiency in the pumping
system. There is a risk of serious or lethal injuries.
►Protect the hose cable against damage.
►Ensure a closed operating fluid return system, in order to avoid zone entrainment as a result of
gases containing oxygen entering into the vacuum system.
CAUTION
Danger of injury from bursting as a result of high pressure in the exhaust line
Faulty or inadequate exhaust pipes lead to dangerous situations, e.g. increased exhaust pressure.
There is a danger of bursting. Injuries caused by flying fragments, the escaping of high pressure, and
damage to the unit cannot be excluded.
►Route the exhaust line without shut-off units.
►Observe the permissible pressures and pressure differentials for the product.
►Check the function of the exhaust line on a regular basis.

Without the exhaust line connected, exhaust gases and mist escape unobstructed into the atmos-
phere. There is a risk of injury and fatality due to poisoning in processes with toxic process media.

►Safely purge toxic process media via an exhaust line.
►Use appropriate filter equipment to separate toxic process media.

Infringement of conformity due to modifications to the product
The Declaration of Conformity from the manufacturer is no longer valid if the operator
changes the original product or installs additional equipment.
●Following the installation into a system, the operator is required to check and re-evalu-
ate the conformity of the overall system in the context of the relevant European Direc-
tives, before commissioning that system.
General safety precautions when handling the product
►Observe all applicable safety and accident prevention regulations.
►Check that all safety measures are observed at regular intervals.
►Never fill or operate the unit with cleaning agents or cleaning agent residues.
►Do not carry out your own conversions or modifications on the unit.

2.5 Proper use
►Use the OME only for separation of oil mist from the gas flow of Pfeiffer Vacuum rotary vane
pumps.
►Use the OME according to the respective pumping speed of the rotary vane pump.
►Use the OME only on the exhaust connection of the rotary vane pump.
►Adhere to the installation, commissioning, operating, and maintenance instructions.
►Do not use any accessory parts other than those recommended by Pfeiffer Vacuum.
2.6 Foreseeable misuse
Improper use of the product invalidates all warranty and liability claims. Any use that is counter to the
purpose of the product, whether intentional or unintentional, is regarded as misuse, in particular:

●Filtering media that attack or decompose materials making contact with media
●Filtering media that contain impurities such as particles, dust, or condensate
●Filtering fluids
●Use with overpressure at the outlet
●Use of accessories or spare parts that are not listed in these instructions

2.7 Personnel qualification
The work described in this document may only be carried out by persons who have appropriate profes-
sional qualifications and the necessary experience or who have completed the necessary training as
provided by Pfeiffer Vacuum.
Training people
1. Train the technical personnel on the product.
2. Only let personnel to be trained work with and on the product when under the supervision of
trained personnel.
3. Only allow trained technical personnel to work with the product.
4. Before starting work, make sure that the commissioned personnel have read and understood
these operating instructions and all applicable documents, in particular the safety, maintenance
and repair information.

3 Product description
3.1 Function
The oil mist separator is intended for installation to the exhaust of rotary vane pumps. It separates oil
mist particles from the conveyed gas flow and thus reduces the emission of operating fluid mist. The
cylindrical filter element, made from glass polyester fleece, is located in a housing made of corrosion-
resistant aluminum.
If the filter element is highly contaminated, an integrated relief pressure valve opens so that the maxi-
mum operating pressure of 1500 hPa (absolute) is not exceeded. The separated amount of operating
fluid is visible through a sight glass and, where necessary, can be drained via the drain screw.

Oil return
If the operating fluid accumulated in the OME reaches a certain level, the differential pressure conveys
the operating fluid back into the rotary vane pump. The use of the oil return unit ODK increases opera-
tional reliability of the rotary vane pump and reduces the effort for maintenance.
3.2 Identifying the product
►To ensure clear identification of the product when communicating with Pfeiffer Vacuum, always
keep all of the information on the rating plate to hand.

4 Storage
We recommend
Pfeiffer Vacuum recommends storing the products in their original transport packaging.
The filter inserts can absorb moisture, and the lubrication properties of the oil and hence the end pres-
sure can be negatively influenced in pumps with an oil return unit.
Storing the OME
1. Store the OME only in dry, dust-free rooms, within the specified ambient conditions.
2. Hermetically seal the OME together with a drying agent in a plastic bag, where storing in damp or
corrosive atmospheres.

Procedure
1. Observe the centering ring with o-ring on the exhaust flange.
2. On the exhaust side, position the OME with the sight glass downwards on the centering ring on
the flange.
3. Connect both flanges with a circlip.
–Ensure correct seating of the centering ring.
4. Ensure the metallic connection (grounding).
5.2 Installing the exhaust line to the OME 16 ATEX
Prerequisite
●The rotary vane pump is switched off
Required aids
●Stainless steel circlip
●Centering ring and O-ring
Procedure
1. Support or suspend the piping so that no forces from the piping system act on the OME.
2. Install the exhaust line downward from the OME, so that condensate does not flow back in.
3. If an air trap is created in the system, then install a condensate drain facility at the lowest point.
4. Route process gases safely.
5. If necessary, introduce a suction device to prevent any risk of zone entrainment.

5.3 Mounting the oil return unit
WARNING

Malfunction from insufficient amount of operating fluid in the operating fluid circula-
tion
The safe function of the oil return unit at the beginning of the evacuation phase requires a
minimum amount of operating fluid in the oil mist filter.
●Fill additional operating fluid in the exhaust flange of the oil mist separator until the fill
level is visible on the bottom edge of the sight glass.
Prerequisites
●Rotary vane pump switched off and cooled down
●Any available exhaust line vented to the atmosphere
●Operating fluid drained from the OME

Procedure
1. Dismantle the blank cover in-between the connection flanges of the rotary vane pump.
2. Mount the connector with both o-rings and the cylinder screws.
–Tightening torque: 2.5 Nm

3. Unscrew the drain screw from the housing of the OME.
4. Mount the hose connection to the drain hole of the OME.
–Be careful with the o-ring.
–Tightening torque: 6 Nm
5. Fix the hose on both sides using the hose clamps.
–Route the hose over a short distance, and protect against kinks.

NOTICE
Malfunction of the oil return unit from an intake pressure that is permanently too high
In the long term, operation of the rotary vane pump with an intake pressure that is permanently too
high leads to insufficient operating fluid supply and subsequently, to damage to the rotary vane
pump.
►Ensure that after longer evacuation phases with high intake pressure, that operating stages with
intake pressure < 50 hPa take place.
NOTICE
Damage to the rotary vane pump caused by condensate in the operating fluid
Condensate caused by mist and the difference in temperature between the OME and rotary vane
pump collects at the base of the OME. If condensate enters the hose cable of the mounted ODK, the
operating fluid of the rotary vane pump will be damaged and the final vacuum deteriorates.
►Drain operating fluid enriched with condensate in the OME in due time.
NOTICE
Overpressure in the rotary vane pump caused by premature saturation of the filter element
Running time and process influences lead to the resinification of the operating fluid, and a rapid in-
crease in the saturation of the filter element. The exhaust pressure in the OME increases. The relief
pressure valve opens the bypass. Increased oil discharge occurs through the exhaust. The power in-
put and temperature of the rotary vane pump increase.
►Check the fill level of the operating fluid at regular intervals.
►If necessary, use an exhaust pressure monitor on the rotary vane pump.
Notes before and during operation
1. Check the operating fluid in the sight glass.
2. Drain separated condensate occasionally from the OME, which has accumulated under the oil
reservoir due to the process.

7 Maintenance
7.1 Draining the operating fluid

Using the oil return unit
When using the oil return unit, it is not necessary to drain the operating fluid manually.
●Drain separated condensate occasionally from the OME, which has accumulated due
to the process.

●Operating fluid level rises above the top edge of the sight glass
●The rotary vane pump is switched off
●Exhaust line vented to atmospheric pressure

Draining the operating fluid
1. Place a collection receptacle below the drain hole.
2. Unscrew the drain screw.
–Be careful with the O-ring.
3. Allow all operating fluid to drain into collection receptacle.
4. Screw in the drain screw.
–Be careful with the O-ring.
–Tightening torque: 6 Nm
5. Separate the operating fluid and condensate.
6. Operating fluid that is free of condensate and impurities can be re-used.
7. Dispose of condensate according to applicable regulations.
7.2 Replacing the filter element
The service life of the filter element is dependent on the respective process conditions. Pfeiffer Vacuum
recommends determining the precise service life in the first operating year. Maintenance of the OME is
limited to the replacement of the entire filter element. We do not recommend cleaning it.
Signs that indicate saturation of the filter element:
●increasing exhaust pressure and opening of the relief pressure valve in the OME.
●increased emission of operating fluid mist at the gas outlet of the OME.
Prerequisites
●The rotary vane pump is switched off
●The exhaust line is vented
●Operating fluid drained from the OME and OME cooled down

Dismantle and clean the filter housing
1. Remove the OME from the system.
2. Pour out any remaining operating fluid.
3. Carefully unscrew both screws until the housing and cover are separated from each other.
–Parts are preloaded.
4. Take the housing with filter element and all parts inside from the cover.
–Be careful with the o-rings.
5. Dispose of consumables according to applicable regulations.
6. Clean the inside of the housing, cover, and sealing surfaces of the o-rings.
Clean the relief pressure valve
1. Loosen the circlip.
2. Dismantle the washer, compression spring and the valve buffer.
3. Clean all parts and examine the parts for wear.
4. Apply a light coat of oil to the valve buffer.
5. Mount the valve parts.
6. Ensure correct seating of the valve buffer in the valve housing.
Mounting the filter housing
1. Use all parts of the spare parts pack.
2. Position the cover with the opening upwards.
3. Apply a light coat of oil to all o-rings.
4. Mount the new o-rings at the respective positions.
5. Insert the new filter element.
6. Insert the relief pressure valve and the compression spring.
7. Install the housing and tighten the screws equally.
–Parts are preloaded.
–Tightening torque: 3 Nm
7.3 Cleaning the oil return flow line
In case of malfunction of the return flow line or after the filter element is replaced, clean the hose cable.
