Warnings, Cautions and Operating Instructions
“WARNING:These lamps can ca se serio s skin b rn and eye inflammation from
short wave ltraviolet radiation if o ter envelope of the lamp is broken or p nct red.
Do not se where people will remain for more than a few min tes nless adeq ate
shielding or other safety preca tions are sed. Certain lamps that will a tomatically
exting ish when the o ter envelope is broken or p nct red are commercially
available.” This lamp complies with FDA radiation performance standard 21
CFR s bchapter J. (USA:21CFR 1040.30 Canada:SOR/DORS/80-381)
If the o ter b lb is broken or p nct red, t rn off at once and replace the lamp to
avoid possible inj ry from hazardo s shortwave ltraviolet radiation. Do not scratch
the o ter b lb or s bject it to press re as this co ld ca se the o ter b lb to crack
or shatter.A partial vac m in the o ter b lb may ca se glass to fly if the envelope
is str ck.
WARNING:The arc-t be of metal halide lamps are designed to operate nder high
press re and at temperat res p to 1000º C and can nexpectedly r pt re d e to
internal or external factors s ch as a ballast fail re or misapplication. If the arc-t be
r pt res for any reason, the o ter b lb may break and pieces of extremely hot glass
might be discharged into the s rro nding environment. If s ch a r pt re were to
happen,THERE IS A RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY, PROPERTY DAMAGE, BURNS
AND FIRE.
Certain lamps that will retain all the glass particles sho ld inner arc-t be r pt re
occ r are commercially available from Philips Lighting Company.
RELAMP FIXTURES AT OR BEFORE THE END OF RATED LIFE.
Allowing lamps to operate ntil they fail is not advised and may increase the
possibility of inner arc t be r pt re.
CAUTION: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY, PROPERTY
DAMAGE, BURNS AND FIRE RESULTING FROM AN ARC-TUBE RUPTURE THE
FOLLOWING LAMP OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS MUST BE FOLLOWED.
Lamp Operating Instructions:
1) T rn off lamps at least once a week for at least 15 min tes in systems which are
operating on a contin o s basis (24 ho rs/day, 7days/week). FAILURE TO TURN
OFF LAMPS FOR THE MINIMUM RECOMMENDED TIME MAY INCREASE THE
POSSIBILITY OF AN INNER ARC-TUBE RUPTURE.
2) RELAMP FIXTURES AT OR BEFORE THE END OF RATED LIFE. Allowing lamps
to operate ntil they fail is not advised and may increase the possibility of inner arc
t be r pt re.
3) Use only in an enclosed fixt re capable of withstanding particles of glass having
temperat res p to 1000º C.
4) Before lamp installation/replacement, sh t power off and allow lamp and
fixt re to cool to avoid electrical shock and potential b rn hazards.
5) Use only a xiliary eq ipment meeting Philips and/or ANSI standards.
Use within voltage limits recommended by ballast man fact rer.
A. Operate lamp only within specified limits of operation.
B. For total s pply load refer to ballast man fact rers electrical data.
C. All P lse Start mog l based lamp req ire a socket rated to withstand
a 4000 volt p lse.
6) Periodically inspect the o ter envelope. Replace any lamps that show scratches,
cracks or damage.
7) If a lamp b lb s pport is sed, be s re to ins late the s pport electrically
to avoid possible decomposition of the b lb glass.
8) Protect lamp base, socket and wiring against moist re, corrosive atmospheres
and excessive heat.
9) Time sho ld be allowed for lamps to stabilize in color when t rned on for the
first time. This may req ire several ho rs of operation, with more than one start.
Lamp color is also s bject to change nder conditions of excess vibration or
shock, and color appearance may vary between individ al lamps.
10) Lamps may req ire 5 to 7 min tes to re-light if there is a power interr ption.
11) Take care in handling and disposing of lamps. If an arc t be is broken, avoid skin
contact with any of the contents or fragments.
12) Use this lamp only in fixt res that contain a P lse Start metal halide ballast and
are specifically designed for se with P lse Start metal halide lamps.
