1. Introduction
Congratulations on your purchase of the Philips SRU 538 universal remote
control. After installing the remote control you can operate a maximum of
3 different appliances with it:TV,VCR and DVD players/recorders.
You can find information about how to prepare this remote control for use in
the chapter ‘Installing the remote control’.

2. Installing the remote control
Inserting the batteries
1Press the cover inwards and slide it in the
direction of the arrow.
2Place two R03, UM4 or AAA type batteries
into the battery compartment, as shown.
3Slide the cover back and click it firmly into
place.
Testing the remote control
The remote control has been programmed to operate most Philips
appliances. Because the SRU 538 may use different signals for each make and
even for different models of the same make, it is advisable to test whether
your appliance responds to the SRU 538.
The example below (TV) instructs you how to do this.
You can repeat the same steps for other appliances (VCR and DVD players/
recorders) which you want to operate using the SRU 538.
Example of TV:
1Turn your TV on manually or use the original remote control.
Tune to channel 1.
2Use the SRU 538’s mode selector to select
TV. Press the key until the green light under
TV in the selector window lights up.
If no green light appears, check whether the
batteries are properly inserted
(see ‘Inserting the batteries’).
3Check whether all the keys are working.
For an overview of the keys and their
functions see ‘3. Keys and functions’.
–If the TV responds as it should to all of the
key commands the SRU 538 is ready for use.

key commands, follow the instructions under

Setting the remote control
This is only necessary if your appliance does not respond to the SRU 538.
If that is the case, the SRU 538 does not recognize the brand and/or model
of your appliance and you need to program the remote control to do so.
The example below (TV) instructs you how to do this.
You can repeat the same steps for other appliances
(VCR, DVD player/recorder) which you want to operate using the SRU 538.
Example of TV:
1Turn on the TV manually or use the original remote control.
Tune in to channel 1.
2Look up the brand of your TV in the code list at the back of this
manual. One or more four-figure codes are shown for each brand.
Note the first code.
Be careful! There are separate tables for TV,VCR and DVD.
Make sure you use the codes from the correct table.
3Select TV with the mode selector.
(See ‘Testing the remote control’.)
4Keep keys ‘1’ and ‘3’ pressed simultaneously
for three seconds until the green light under
TV in the selector window flashes twice and
then remains lit.
5Then enter the code noted in step 2 using the digital keys.
–The green light in the selector window will now flash twice.
If the light flashes once for an extended period, the code has not been
entered properly or the wrong code has been entered.
Start again from step 2.
6Point the SRU 538 at the TV and check that it responds as it should.
–If the TV responds to all of the key commands, the SRU 538 is ready for
use. Do not forget to note your code.
•If the device does not respond at all, or not to all of the
key commands, start again from step 2 and try the next code
from the list.

Automatically setting the remote control
If you cannot find the right code for your brand device,
the remote control can automatically search for the right code.
Example of TV:
1Make sure the TV is switched on and select a channel using the original
remote control or the keys on the TV (for example channel 1).
The SRU 538 emits the ‘switch off TV’ signal for all models of TV that
are stored in the memory.
•If the device is a DVD-player or video recorder,
insert a disk or tape and start playback.
2Then keep keys 1 and 3 on the SRU 538
pressed simultaneously for three seconds,
until the green light under TV in the selector
window flashes twice and then remains lit.
3Press the Standby key of the SRU 538 briefly.
–The SRU 538 now starts emitting all known
‘TV off ’ signals, one by one.
Each time a code is sent, the green light under
TV in the selector window lights up.
4When your TV switches off (stand-by),
you press the Standby key of the SRU 538
twice within 1 second, to confirm.
–The SRU 538 has now found a code that
works on your TV.
5Check if you can operate all functions on your TV with the SRU 538.
•If this is not the case, you can redo the automatic setting.
The SRU 538 will then search for a code that perhaps works
better.
–After the SRU 538 has run through all the known codes,
the search will stop automatically and the green light will stop flashing.
–Automatic programming of a TV takes a maximum of 5 minutes.
For VCR and DVD this time is 2 minutes.

4. Extra possibilities
Adjusting device selection (Modeselector)
The SRU 538 is default set for operating TV,VCR and DVD.You can select
the device you wish to operate with the Mode selector. Each option allows
operation of one device only. If desired, you can program the Mode selector
to select a different kind of device.
For example, if you want to operate a second TV.
In the following example you will see how to configure the DVD mode for a
second TV.
1Switch on the second TV.
2Press the Mode selector to select DVD.
3Then keep 1 and 6 on the SRU 538 pressed
simultaneously for five seconds,until the
green light under DVD in the selector window
flashes twice and then remains lit.
4Press keys 9, 9 and 2, in that order.
5Press the Mode selector to select TV.
6Press the 1 key.
–The green light under DVD flashes twice.
DVD will now allow you to operate your
second TV.
7Program the SRU 538 to operate the second TV.

Adding a function to the remote control
If you want to add a function to the SRU 538, you can contact the
Philips service line for Universal Remote Control to ask for the 3-figure code
for the extra function.
1Using the Mode selector, select the device
for which you want to add the function.
2Then keep 1 and 6 on the SRU 538 pressed
simultaneously for five seconds,until the
green light under TV in the selector window
flashes twice and then remains lit.
3Press keys 9, 9 and 4, in that order.
4Enter the 3-figure code which you received from the service line within
thirty seconds.
5Press the key under which you want to store the new function.
–The light flashes twice.
The extra function has been successfully added to the SRU 538.
•If you want to store the function under Shift in combination with
another key, first press the Shift key and then press the required
function key.
•For restoring the original function of the key,
see ‘Restoring the original functions of your remote control’.

control
1Keep keys 1 and 6 on the SRU 538 pressed
simultaneously for five seconds,until the
green light under TV in the selector window
flashes twice and then remains lit.
2Press keys 9, 8 and 1, in that order.
– The light flashes twice.
All original functions have now been restored
and any extra functions have been deleted.

5. Troubleshooting
• Problem
– Solution
•The device you want to operate does not respond and the green light
does not flash when you press a key.
–Replace the old batteries with two new 1.5 Volt, RO3, UM4 or AAA batteries.
•The device you want to operate does not respond but the green light
does flash when a key is pressed.
–Point the SRU 538 at the device and make sure that there are no
obstructions between the SRU 538 and the device.
•The SRU 538 does not respond properly to commands.
–Maybe you are using the wrong code.Try programming the SRU 538 again
using another code, which is mentioned under the brand of your device, or
reset for automatic search to find the right code.
If the device still does not respond, call our helpline.
•The Teletext keys do not work.
– Find out whether your TV is equipped with Teletext.
•You have difficulties operating all of the functions on your device.
– Maybe the SRU 538 has to be adapted to the model of the device.
Call our helpline for details.
•Your brand of device is not in the code list.
– Try to set the SRU 538 automatically.
See ‘Automatically setting the remote control’.
•None of the codes works during manual setting of the remote control.
– If that is the case, follow the instructions under
‘Automatically setting the remote control’.

Congratulazioni per l’acquisto del telecomando universale Philips SRU 538.
Dopo aver installato il telecomando si possono azione fino a 3 apparecchi
diversi con esso:TV,VCR e lettori/registratori DVD.
Nel capitolo ‘Installazione del telecomando’ troverete le informazioni
necessarie per preparare il telecomando all’uso.

Inserimento delle batterie
1Premete sul coperchio e fatelo scorrere
nella direzione della freccia.
2Inserite due batterie R03, UM4 od AAA nel
vano batterie, come mostrato in figura.
3Richiudete il coperchio
(scatta in posizione con un clic).
Collaudo del telecomando
Il telecomando è stato programmato per funzionare con la maggioranza degli
apparecchi Philips. Poiché l’SRU 538 potrebbe utilizzare segnali differenti per
ciascuna marca e modello, è opportuno verificare se l’apparecchio risponde ai
comandi inviati dall’SRU 538. L’esempio che segue (TV) descrive la procedura
per il collaudo. Potete ripetere questi passaggi per gli altri apparecchi
(Lettori/registratori di VCR e di DVD) che intendete controllare con l’SRU
538.
Procedura di esempio relativa ad un televisore:
1Accendete il televisore direttamente o tramite il suo telecomando
originale. Sintonizzate il canale 1.
2Utilizzate il selettore di modalità dell’SRU 538
per selezionare TV. Accendete il televisore
direttamente o tramite il suo telecomando
originale.
Se la spia verde non si accende, controllate se le
batterie sono inserite correttamente
(vedi ‘Inserimento delle batterie’).
3Controllate se funzionano tutti i tasti.
Per una panoramica sui tasti e le relative
funzioni, consultate ‘3.Tasti e funzioni’.
–Se il TV risponde correttamente a tutti i
comandi abbinati ai tasti,
l’SRU 538 è pronto per l’uso.
•Se l’apparecchio non risponde del tutto od ignora alcuni
comandi, passate alle istruzioni descritte in ‘Configurazione del
telecomando’, o per un configurazione diretta:

Configurazione del telecomando
Questa procedura va svolta solo se l’apparecchio non risponde ai comandi
inviati dall’SRU 538. Se ciò accade significa che l’SRU 538 non riconosce la
marca e/o il modello dell’apparecchio ed è quindi necessario programmare il
telecomando in base alle specifiche dell’apparecchio. L’esempio che segue
(TV) descrive la procedura di configurazione. Potete ripetere questi passaggi
per gli altri apparecchi (Lettori/registratori di VCR e di DVD) che intendete
controllare con l’SRU 538.
Procedura di esempio relativa ad un televisore:
1Accendete il televisore direttamente o tramite il suo telecomando
originale. Sintonizzate il canale 1.
2Individuate la marca del vostro TV nella lista dei codici inclusa alla fine di
questa guida. Per ciascuna marca sono elencati uno o più codici a
quattro cifre. Annotate il primo codice.
Prestate attenzione! Vi sono tabelle separate per le varie categorie di
apparecchi:TV,VCR e DVD. Prelevate i codici dalla tabella corretta.
3Selezionate TV con il selettore di modalità.
(Vedi ‘Collaudo del telecomando’).
4Tenere i tasti ‘1’ e ‘3’ premuti
contemporaneamente per tre secondi fino a
quando la spia luminosa verde sotto la TV
nella finestra di selezione lampeggia due volte
e poi rimane accesa.
5A questo punto inserite il codice annotato al punto 2, mediante i tasti
numerici.
–La spia verde nella finestra di selezione lampeggia due volte.
Se la spia lampeggia una volta per un prolungato periodo di tempo,
il codice non è stato inserito correttamente, oppure si tratta di un
codice errato. Ripetete la procedura a partire dal punto 2.
6Puntate l’SRU 538 in direzione del TV e verificate se l’apparecchio
risponde correttamente ai comandi inviati.
–Se il TV risponde a tutti i comandi abbinati ai tasti, l’SRU 538 è pronto
per l’uso. Non scordate di annotare il codice.
•Se l’apparecchio non risponde del tutto od ignora alcuni
comandi, ripetete la procedura a partire dal punto 2 inserendo il
secondo codice elencato nella lista.

Configurazione automatica del telecomando
Se nessuno dei codici abbinati alla marca del vostro prodotto è corretto,
è possibile utilizzare la funzione di ricerca automatica del codice corretto del
telecomando.
Procedura di esempio relativa ad un televisore:
1Assicuratevi che il TV sia acceso e selezionate un canale mediante il suo
telecomando originale, od i tasti del pannello del televisore (ad esempio
il canale 1). L’SRU 538 procederà con l’invio del segnale di ‘spegnimento
TV’ di tutti i modelli di televisore presenti nella sua memoria.
•Se l’apparecchio è un lettore di DVD o un registratore di video, inserire
un disco ed iniziare la riproduzione.
2Tenere i tasti ‘1’ e ‘3’ premuti
contemporaneamente per tre secondi fino a
quando la spia luminosa verde sotto la TV
nella finestra di selezione lampeggia due volte
e poi rimane accesa.
3Premete brevemente il tasto Standby
dell’SRU 538.
–L’SRU 538 inizia ad inviare tutti i segnali noti
di ‘spegnimento TV’, uno alla volta. Ad ogni
invio, si accende la spia verde sotto a TV nella
finestra di selezione.
4Quando il televisore si spegne (stand-by),
premete due volte (entro un secondo) il tasto
Standby dell’SRU 538 per confermare.
–L’SRU 538 ha quindi trovato un codice adatto
al vostro TV.
5Verificate se l’SRU 538 è in grado di controllare tutte le funzioni del
televisore.
•In caso contrario, ripetete la procedura di configurazione
automatica. L’SRU 538 ricercherà quindi un codice che forse
risulterà migliore del precedente.
–Quando l’SRU 538 ha inviato tutti i codici noti, la ricerca si arresta
automaticamente e la spia verde termina di lampeggiare.
–La programmazione automatica di una TV impiega massimo 5 minuti.
Per VCR e DVD questo tempo è di 2 minuti.

4. Funzioni aggiuntive
Selezione dell’apparecchio controllato
(Selettore modalità)
Il telecomando SRU 538 è impostato per azionamento automatico di TV,VCR
e DVD, Si può selezionare il dispositivo che si desidera azionare col selettore
di modalità. Ciascuna opzione permette l’uso di un solo apparecchio alla
volta.
E’ anche possibile programmare il selettore di modalità per selezionare altri
tipi di apparecchi. Ad esempio, un secondo TV. Nell’esempio seguente, viene
descritto come configurare la modalità DVD per un secondo TV.
1Accendete il secondo TV.
2Premete il selettore di modalità per
selezionare DVD.
3Quindi tenere i tasti 1 e 6 del telecomando
SRU 538 premuti contemporaneamente per
cinque secondi fino a quando la spia luminosa
verde sotto il DVD nella finestra di selezione
lampeggia due volte e poi rimane accesa.
4Premete i tasti 9, 9 e 2, in questo ordine.
5Premete il selettore di modalità per selezionare TV.
6Premete il tasto 1.
–La spia verde sotto a DVD lampeggia due
volte.
Ora, con DVD è possibile utilizzare un
secondo TV.
7Programmate l’SRU 538 per controllare il secondo TV.

Aggiungere una funzione al telecomando
Per aggiungere una funzione all’SRU 538, contattate il servizio di assistenza
Philips per i telecomandi universali per richiedere il codice a 3 cifre riservato
alle funzioni aggiuntive.
1Utilizzando il selettore di modalità,
selezionate l’apparecchio per il quale intendete
aggiungere la funzione.
2Quindi tenere i tasti 1 e 6 del telecomando
SRU 538 premuti contemporaneamente per
cinque secondi fino a quando la spia luminosa
verde sotto la TV nella finestra di selezione
lampeggia due volte e poi rimane accesa.
3Premete i tasti 9, 9 e 4, in questo ordine.
4Inserite il codice a 3 cifre ricevuto dal servizio di assistenza, entro trenta
secondi.
5Premete il tasto al quale associare la nuova funzione.
–La spia lampeggia due volte.
La funzione aggiuntiva è stata aggiunta correttamente all’SRU 538.
•Per associare la funzione ad una combinazione Shift + altro tasto, prima
premete il tasto Shift poi il secondo tasto.
•Per ripristinare la funzione originale di un tasto,
consultate ‘Ripristino delle funzioni originali del telecomando’.

5. Risoluzione di problemi
• Problema
– Soluzione
•L’apparecchio da controllare non risponde e la spia verde non lampeggia
alla pressione di un tasto.
–Sostituite le batterie con due batterie RO3, UM4 o AAA da 1,5 Volt nuove.
•L’apparecchio da controllare non risponde, ma la spia verde lampeggia
alla pressione di un tasto.
–Puntate l’SRU 538 in direzione dell’apparecchio ed assicuratevi che non vi
siano ostacoli tra l’SRU 538 e l’apparecchio.
•L’SRU 538 non risponde correttamente ai comandi.
–Forse state utilizzando il codice errato. Provate a riprogrammare l’SRU 538
con un altro codice, tra quelli elencati sotto alla marca del vostro
apparecchio, oppure azzerate la configurazione svolgendo la ricerca
automatica del codice corretto. Se l’apparecchio non risponde ancora ai
comando, contattate il nostro servizio assistenza.
•Itasti Teletext non funzionano.
–Verificate se il TV include la funzione Teletext.
•L’utilizzo di tutte le funzioni dell’apparecchio è difficoltoso.
–Probabilmente è necessario adattare l’SRU 538 al modello dell’apparecchio.

•La marca dell’apparecchio non è elencata nella lista dei codici.
–Provate a configurare automaticamente l’SRU 538. Fate riferimento a
‘Configurazione automatica del telecomando’.

–In questo caso, seguite le istruzioni riportate sotto a
‘Configurazione automatica del telecomando’.
