Print Server Configuration
This chapter provides anoverview of theconfiguration process.
Overview
The PrintServeris designed tosupport manydifferent platforms, and the configuration
requiredwould depend upon theenvironment in which it is installed.
• When you first time install your printserver toyour LAN.We will suggest youinstall
utility “Bi-Admin”to configure your PrintServer in Windows. It can providean ad-
vanceand completeconfigurationfor yourprintserver. SeeChapter5for details
on using Bi-Admin.
• Ifyouhave installed NetBEUI protocol in your network, you dontneed toconfig-
ure the printserver. Youcanselect NetBEUIprotocol in Peer-To-Peer driver instal-
lation to let your PC attach to the PrintServer to print, throughNetBEUI protocol.
• PCs wishingto use the printer attached to the Print Server alwaysrequire configu-
ration. See Chapter 4- Client Configuration for details.
• Ifusing a NetWareServer (V3, 4, or 5 in "compatibility" mode):
• For configurationandmanagement, theBi-Admin program(detailedin Chap-
ter 5 Bi-Admin Management Utility) is recommended.
• Ifusing NDPS, refer to Appendix B - Network Server Configuration.
• Ifyou wish touse aqueue-basedprinting systemusing WindowsNT
Server/Windows2000/XP/Server 2003,theNetworkServermust be configured
as detailedin Appendix B-Network Server Configuration. However, it is notnec-
essarytouse aNetworkServer-basedqueue; client PCs can print directlyto the
Print Server byinstalling the Peer-to-peer Print Driver in Driver/PTP20 folder on
the CD-ROM.
• AppleTalk is also supported, andnormallyno configuration ofthe Print Server is
required. See the Macintosh section ofChapter 4 for details ofclient configuration.
Other configure method for Print Server
Ifyoudo not have aWindows32 platformavailable, use one ofthe following methods
to configurethePrint Server.
Web Browser
Onlyavailable on FPS Series. See Chapter 6-Web Interface
Setup for details.
FTP Using this method, the configuration file is downloaded fromthe
Print Server, edited, then sent back.No software needs to be in-
stalled.
SeetheUNIX manual for details. The Unix manual is on theCD-
ROM, in the Manual\Unix folder.
Note:FPS-2PUW,FPS-2PUWGand FPS-1UA donot support
FTP to download the configuration file.

Client PC Configuration
The chapter details the client configuration required on LAN clients to usethe
printer or printersattached tothePrint Server.
Overview
Before performing client configuration, the following conditions must be met:
• PrintServer must be installed onyour network.
• PrintServer must be configured (refer to Chapter 3).
• BoththePrint Server and the attached printer must be powered ON.
• Ifthe client PC uses aWireless connectiontocommunicatewiththePrintServer,
the PC's wireless settings must be correct, as described below.
WirelessSettings for clientPCs
The FPS-2PUW/FPS-2PUWGincorporate Wireless Stations for IEEE 802.11b/g de-
vices. This section is onlyrelevant tousers ofthe FPS-2PUWand FPS-2PUWG.
Toprint tothe FPS-2PUWor FPS-2PUWG, Wireless stations must ensure thatthe
following Wireless Settings are correct.
Ad-hoc Mode Infrastructure Mode
SSID Must match the other Wireless sta-
tions, unless the SSID is null or
"any".
Ifits SSID is null or "any",aWire-
less station canjoin anyAd-hoc
group.
Must match the Access
Point.
Channel Should match the other Wireless
stations.
However, when joining anexisting
ad-hoc group,aWireless station
must use theChannel in use, rather
than its own Channel.
Access Point sets the
Channel used.
Wireless stations automati-
callylocate the correct
channel.
WEP Settings
Must match the other Wireless sta-
tions. Must match the Access

Printing Methods
The Print Server supports anumber ofprinting methods:
• Peer-to-PeerPrint Driver is installedbyrunningsetup.exe in the CD-ROM
Driver/PTP20 folder. The print jobsare stored(queued)onyour PC,andsent
to the Print Server when it is available.
• Server-based Print Queue means that all print jobs are stored (queued) on the
NetworkServer (e.g.NetWare, WindowsNT/2000/XP/Server 2003) andthen sent
to thePrint Server.This allowstheNetworkAdministrator tomodifythePrint
Queue. For example, an importantjob can be movedto thehead ofthe queue.
• Windows SMB printingis aMicrosoftstandard for using a"NetworkPrinter". No
additionalsoftware needs tobe installed on your WindowsPC,and printingfrom
MS-DOS programsis supported. However, becausethe PrintServer cannotstore
files, large print jobs maycause problems.
• AppleTalk is also supported, andnormallyno configuration ofthe Print Server is
required. SeetheMacintoshsectionofthis chapterfor details ofclient configura-
tion.
Which printing method should I use?
• Ifusing Windows95,98, Me, NT,2000, XP or Server 2003,the easiest method is
to install the Peer-to-peer Print Driver on the CD-ROM.
• Ifusing Windows, andyouneedto print fromMS-DOS programs, or you don't
wish to install additional software, useSMB. However, SMBis not suitable for
large, complex documents, so ifyouneed this as well as MS-DOSprinting, you
should install BOTHthe Peer-to-peer Print Driver and SMBprinting. MS-DOS pro-
gramscan use the SMBprinter, Windowsprogramsshould use the Peer-to-peer
PrintDriver.
• Ifyour LANhas NetworkServers (e.g.WindowsNT,Windows2000Server, Win-
dowsXP Server, WindowsSerer 2003and NetWare) use themethod advisedby
yourNetworkAdministrator. The PrintServer canprintviaaqueuelocatedona
Networkserver, ifdesired.
• Unix users -refer to the Unix Manual onthe CD-ROM, in theManual/Unix direc-
tory.
• Macintosh users - refer to the Macintosh section ofthis chapter.
Checking your Network Protocols (Windows)
Your PC must have EITHER the TCP/IP or NetBEUI protocols installed.
• Ifusing the Peer-to-peer Print Driver, theinstallationprogramwill checkthis for
you.
• Ifusing Windows SMBPrinting,youmust checkmanually,as described below.
(This is for Windows95 only. All later versions ofWindowshave TCP/IPinstalled
bydefault.)
