1 PURPOSE
TheDOR‐4046microprocessorbased,interactiveopticalsmokedetectorisdesignedfordetectionof
visiblesmokethatisconcurrentwithmostfirecombustion.Itenablesafiredetectionatastartofits
flamelessstagewhenmaterialstartstosmoulder,andthereforegenerally,alongtimepriortothe
appearanceofanopenflameandanoticeableriseintemperature.Thedetectorischaracterisedby
ahighresistancelevelagainstwind,pressurechangeandsteamcondensation.Itisverysensitiveto
visiblesmoke.
TheDOR‐4046addressableopticalsmokedetectorsoperateonlyinaddressablelines/loopsofPOLON
4000firedetectionandalarmsystems.Theyareequippedwithshortcircuitisolators.

3 SAFETYCONDITIONS
3.1Repairsandmaintenance
Anymaintenanceworksorperiodicinspectionshallbeexecutedbyskilledpersonnelemployedby
companiesbeingauthorisedandtrainedbyPOLON‐ALFA.
Anyrepairmustbecarriedoutbythemanufacturer.
POLON‐ALFAbearsnoresponsibilityfortheoperationofanyapparatusbeingservicedandrepairedby
unauthorisedpersonnel.
3.2Worksatheight
Anydetectorinstallationworkscarriedoutatheightmustbeexecutedwithparticularcareutilisingtools
andmachineryingoodworkingcondition.
Specialattentionshallbegiventothestabilityofladders,platforms,lifts,etc.
Anyelectrictoolsshallbeusedstrictlyobeyingthesafetyrulesspecifiedinthemanufacturerinstruction
manuals.

3.3Anti‐dustingeyeprotection
Itisobligatorytouseprotectiveanti‐dustingglassesandmasksduringdetectorinstallationworksthat
producehighamountofdust,suchasholedrillingfordetectorbasemountingonceilings.
4 CONSTRUCTIONDESCRIPTIONS
ThedetectormechanicalconstructionisshowninFig.1.Itsbasicelementisadetectionopticalmodule
consistingoftransmittinginfrareddiodeandaphotodiodeactingasareceiver.Theyaremountedin
aholderinsuchawaythatradiationemittedbythetransmittingdiodedoesnotreachtheotherdiode
directly.Thedetectingmodule(holderwithdiodes)isfastenedtoaprintedboardthatcontainsall
electronicelementsandacircuitwiththedetectormonitoringprocessor.Theopticalmoduleis
protectedbyalabyrinth,dampingexternalradiation.Ametalprotectivenetpreventsirruptionofsmall
insectsorpiecesofdirtintothedetectingmodule.Thewholestructureisplacedinawhiteplastic
housingcontainingabasket,screenanddetectorcover.

5 PRINCIPLEOFOPERATION
TheDOR‐4046isaTyndalleffectbasedopticalsmokedetector–lightrayscatteringonsmokeparticles.
Itsbasicelementisadetectingopticalmoduleconsistingofanelectroluminescencediodethattransmits
infraredradiationandanopticalreceivingdiode.Theopticalmoduleandsurroundingmeasuring
chamberareprotectedbyalabyrinthwhichisshapedtodumpbothexternallightandradiation
resultingfrominternalreflexesofthetransmittingdiodelight.Whensmokeparticlesenterthe
measuringchamber,theyreflectthelightemittedbythetransmittingdiode.Thereflectedlightreaches
theopticaldiodeproducingphotocurrentwhichisfirststrengthenedandprocessed,andthenanalysed
bythemicroprocessorinstalledinsidethedetector.
Thealarmmodeisindicatedwithpulseredlightemittedbyasignallingdiodeinstalledonthedetector
casing.Theindicatorenablesfastlocationoftheactivateddetectorandishelpfulinperiodicdetector
inspections.Incasethedetectorishardlyvisibleorisinstalledinadifficult‐to‐reachspace,anadditional
opticalalarmindicator(WZ‐31)maybeconnectedinanaccessibleandvisibleplace.

CommunicationbetweenthePOLON4000firealarmcontrolpanelandtheDOR‐4046detectorsis
obtainedwithanaddressabletwo‐wiredetectionline.Unique,fullydigitalcommunicationprotocol
enablespassinganyinformationfromthefirealarmcontrolpaneltothedetectorandinversely.
Apartfromtransmittinganevaluationoffirefactorsandtendencyoftheirchanges,thedetectorpasses
tothecontrolpanel,onitsrequest,thecurrentanaloguevalue.
Thedetectoroperationcontrollingmicroprocessormonitorscorrectnessofitsbasiccircuitsoperation
and,incaseanirregularityisfound,reportsrelevantinformationtothecontrolpanel.
TheDOR‐4046isananaloguedetectorwithanautomaticsensitivityself‐regulationdigitalmechanism
thatisitmaintainsaconstantsensitivitylevelduringprogressingdirtbuild‐upinthemeasuring
chamber.
Afterexceedingapre‐setthresholdoftechnicalalarm,thedetectortransmitsasignaltothePOLON
4000systemcontrolpaneldenotingthemeasuringchamberpartialcontamination.Thesignalis
generatedinordertoinformtheservicingpersonnelthatthedetectorparametersshallnotremainat
thedeclaredlevelincasethedirtbuild‐uptendencyismaintainedandappropriatemeasuresarenot
taken.Itmustbestressedthatthedetectorshallbefullyefficientwithinca.1/3ofthetimeperiodthat
passedsincethelatestmaintenanceworks.
Thedetectorisequippedwithaninternalshortcircuitisolatorthatcutsoffanefficientpartofa
detectionlinefromtheadjacentshortedsectionwhatenablesfurtherundisturbeddetectoroperation.
Thedetectoralarmmodeissignalledwithflashingredlightoftheilluminatingdiode.Thefaultmode,
technicalalarmandanactuationofashortcircuitisolatoraresignalledwithyellowflashesofthediode.
Thedetectorsensitivitylevelisadjustable.Itssensitivityissettledfromthecontrolpanellevelchoosing
oneofavailablesensitivitylevels:1stoperationmode–normalsensitivity,2ndoperationmode–
increasedsensitivity,3rdoperationmode–decreasedsensitivity.
Thedetectoroperationmodes(besidesthecontrolpanelalarmvariants)entailsthattheuserisableto
adapt,inthebestway,itsoperationcharacteristicstooperationinthedeterminedenvironment.
6 OPERATIONANDMAINTENANCECONDITIONS
Duringthedetectorsoperationitisobligatorytoavoidcreationofdeworrimeonthedetectorsurface
aswellastoprotectagainstexcessivecontaminationwithdust.
Inthetimeofanyrepairworks,thedetectorshouldbetakenoutorprotectedwithprovided‐
for‐this‐purposecover.Suchacovercanbeobtainedfromaninstallerorpurchasedfromthe
manufacturer.Incasethedetectoristakenout,itsbaseshouldbeprotectedagainstbeing
paintedutilisingapaintingtape.Detectorswhicharedamagedduringpaintingandrenovation
worksduetoafaultofthepersonsexecutingsuchworks(e.g.painteddetectorcasing,stuck‐
with‐paintnet,etc.)arenotsubjecttowarrantrepairs.
Duringtheoperationlife,theDOR‐4046addressableopticalsmokedetectorshouldbesubjectedto
periodicalinspectionaccordingtoPKN‐CEN/TS54‐14:2006standard,whichisexecutedinorderto
confirmthedetectorproperoperationanditsappropriateinteroperationwiththecontrolpanel.The
inspectionshouldbecarriedoutatleastevery6months.
Thedetectoroperationistestedwithasmokesimulatororsmokegenerator.
Long‐lastingoperationoftheDOR‐4046opticalsmokedetectormayresultindustaccumulationinside
itsinternalopticalchamber.Afterexceedingtheself‐regulationrangeduetothechambercontamination

progress,thedetectortriggersthetechnicalalarmmodesendingexcessivecontaminationinformationto
thecontrolpanel.Itcausesanecessitytocleanthedetectoropticalmodule:thelabyrinthandthelenses
ofbothdiodes–transmittingoneandphotodiode.Afailuretocarryouttheservicingworksmayresult
infalsealarmevokinginfuture.

ThedetectorassemblinganddismantlingisshowninFig.2.
Inordertodismantlethedetectoritisnecessaryto:
a) pressingthenetlongtongue,turnthecoverrightinthebasketuntilitistakenout;

b) removetwoscrewsthatfixthelabyrinthandtakethelabyrinthout;
c) performthenecessarycleaning.
Adelicatebrushaswellasvacuumcleanerarerecommendedforcleaning.Compressedaircanbe
possiblyused.Itispermittedtowashthelabyrinthwithwarmwaterwithadditionofwashing‐upliquid.
Nodamppatchesshouldremainonthelabyrinthinternalsurfacesafterwashinganddrying.
Aftercleaningthedetectorshouldbeassembled,itsfunctioningshouldbetestedusingasmokeimitator
orsmokegeneratorandinstalledagainintothedetectionline.
Inthisordertoassemblethedetector,itisnecessaryto:
a) fastenthelabyrinthwithtwoscrews;
b) placethebasketinthereversepositionasthatshowninthefigure;
c) insertthenetintothebasketpayingattentiontoitspositioning–alignmentwiththejuts;
d) insertthecoverintothebasketsothattheilluminatingdiodeisplacedalittletotherightin
relationtotheglass;
e) turnthecovertotheleft.
Note–Incasethecleaningdoesnotproducetherequiredresult,itisnecessarytosendthedetectorto
themanufacturerforrepair.
7 DETECTORINSTALLATION
TheDOR‐4046detectorsareinstalled(height,arrangement)accordingtotheguidelinessettledbythe
ScientificandResearchCentreforFireProtection.Theyaremountedinpremiseswheretheworking
equipmentorstoredmaterialsmayemitvisiblesmokewhenafireoccurs.Incaseitisdifficultto
determinethemostprobablefirefactor(smoketype)thatislikelytooccurinthefirstfiredevelopment
phase,specialtestsshouldbecarriedout(atadesigningstage)usingvarioustypedetectorsormixed
protection(e.g.withopticalandionisationdetectors)shouldbeapplied.
Thedetectorsareintendedtooperateinloops,inloopswithstraightbranchesorinradialdetection
linesofthePOLON4100andPOLON4200controlpanels(seethePOLON4100/POLON4200control
panelOperationandMaintenanceDocumentation).
Thedetectorsareinstalledinthe40modelrangebases.Thedetectionlineconnectionispresentedin
theG‐40baseInstallationandMaintenanceManual.Anadditionalopticalalarmsignalofadetectorora
groupofdetectorscanbeobtainedbyconnectingtheWZ‐31alarmindicator.
Alarmsystemcablesareroutedinaccordancewiththeregulationsobligatoryforlowvoltage(below
42V)systems.
Note–Thedetectorsshouldnotbeinstalledincorrosiveatmospherethatcontainscausticgasesand
vapoursaswellasdust.Steamcondensationondetectorsisimpermissible.
8 STORAGEANDTRANSPORTATION
8.1Storage
TheDOR‐4046detectorsmustbestoredinclosedroomsfreeofanycausticgasesandvapours,at
ambienttemperaturebetween0°Cand+40°Candrelativehumiditynotexceeding80%at+35oC.

Thedetectorsshallnotbeexposedtodirectsunlightorheatemittedbyheaters.
Thestorageperiodofthedetectorsintransportpackageshouldnotexceed6months.
8.2Transportation
TheDOR‐4046detectorsshouldbecarriedinclosedspacesoftransportmeansinproperpackingthat
meetappropriatetransportregulations.Transporttemperatureshallnotbelowerthan‐40°Cand
higherthan+70°C;relativehumidityshallnotexceed95%at+45°Cor80%at+70°C.
