1PURPOSE
TheDUR‐4046microprocessorbasedinteractiveaddressableopticalsmokedetectorisdesignedfor
detectionofvisiblesmokethatisconcurrentwithmostfirecombustion.Itenablesafiredetectionat
astartofitsflamelessstagewhenmaterialstartstosmoulder,andthereforegenerally,alongtime
priortoappearanceofanopenflameandanoticeableriseintemperature.Thedetectoris
characterisedbyahighresistanceagainstwind,pressurechangeandsteamcondensation.Itisvery
sensitivetovisiblesmoke.
TheDUR‐4046addressableopticalsmokedetectorsoperateonlyinthePOLON4000firedetecting
andalarmsystemcontrolpaneladdressableloop‐shapedlines.Thedetectorsareequippedin
internalshortcircuitisolators.

3SAFETYCONDITIONS
3.1Repairsandmaintenance
Anymaintenanceworksorperiodicinspectionsshallbeexecutedbyskilledpersonnelemployedby
companiesauthorisedandtrainedbyPOLON‐ALFA.
Anyrepairsmustbecarriedoutbythemanufacturer.POLON‐ALFAbearsnoresponsibilityforthe
operationofanyapparatusbeingrepairedbyunauthorisedpersonnel.
3.2Worksatheight
Anydetectorinstallationworkscarriedoutatheightmustbeexecutedwithparticularcareutilising
toolsandmachineryingoodworkingcondition.
Specialattentionshallbegiventostabilityofladders,elevators,lifts,etc.

Anyelectrictoolsshallbeusedstrictlyobeyingthesafetyrulesstatedininstructionmanualsby
manufacturers.
3.3Anti‐dustingeyeprotection
Itisobligatorytouseprotectiveanti‐dustingglassesandmasksduringdetectorinstallationworks
thatproducehighamountofdust,suchasholedrillinginceilings.
4DESIGNDESCRIPTION
TheDUR‐4046detectormechanicalconstructionisshownonFig.1.Itsbasicelementisadetecting
opticalmoduleconsistingoftransmittingultravioletdiodeandareceivingdiode.Theyaremounted
inaholderinsuchawaythattheradiationemittedbythetransmittingdiodedoesnotreachthe
otherdiodedirectly.Thedetectingmodule(holderwithdiodes)isfastenedtoaprintedboardthat
containsallelectronicelementswiththedetectormonitoringprocessor.Theopticalmoduleis
protectedbyalabyrinth,dampingexternalradiation.Ametalprotectivenetpreventsirruptionof
smallinsectsorpiecesofdirtintothedetectingmodule.Thewholestructureisplacedinawhite
plastichousingcontainingabasket,adetectorcoverandascreen.

5PRINCIPLEOFOPERATION
TheDUR‐4046isaTyndalleffectbasedopticalsmokedetector–lightrayscatteringonsmoke
particles.Itsbasicelementisadetectingopticalmoduleconsistingofanelectroluminescencediode
thattransmitslightradiationandaphotodiodeactingasareceiver.Theopticalmoduleand
surroundingmeasuringchamberareprotectedbyalabyrinthwhichisshapedtodumpbothexternal
lightandradiationresultingfrominternalreflexesofthetransmittingdiodelight.Whensmoke
particlesenterthemeasuringchamber,theyreflectthelightemittedbythetransmittingdiode.The
reflectedlightreachestheopticaldiodeproducingphotocurrentwhichisfirststrengthenedand
processedintodigitalformandthenanalysedbythemicroprocessorinstalledinsidethedetector.
Analarmmodeisindicatedwithapulseredlightemittedbyasignallingdiodeinstalledinthe
detectorcasing.Theindicatorenablesfastlocationoftheactivateddetectorandishelpfulinperiodic
detectorinspections.Incasethedetectorishardlyvisibleorisinstalledinadifficult‐to‐reachspace,
anadditionalopticalalarmindicator(WZ‐31)maybeconnectedinanaccessibleandvisibleplace.

CommunicationbetweenthePOLON4000systemcontrolpanelandtheDUR‐4046detectorsis
obtainedthroughanaddressabletwo‐wiredetectionline.Aunique,fullydigitalcommunications
protocolenablespassinganyinformationfromthecontrolpaneltothedetectorandinversely.Apart
fromtransmittinganevaluationoffirefactorsandtendencyoftheirchangetendency,thedetector
passestothecontrolpanel,onitsrequest,acurrentanaloguevalue.
Thedetectoroperationcontrollingmicroprocessormonitorscorrectnessofitsbasiccircuits
operationand,incaseanirregularityisfound,reportsrelevantinformationtothecontrolpanel.The
DUR‐4046isananaloguedetectorwithanautomaticsensitivityself‐regulationdigitalmechanism
thatisitmaintainsaconstantsensitivitylevelduringprogressingdirtbuild‐upinthemeasuring
chamber.
Afterexceedingapre‐setthresholdoftechnicalalarm,thedetectortransmitsasignaltothePOLON
4000systemcontrolpaneldenotingthemeasuringchamberpartialcontamination.Thesignalis
generatedinordertoinformtheservicingpersonnelthatthedetectorparametersshallnotremain
atthedeclaredlevelincasethedirtbuild‐uptendencyismaintainedandappropriatemeasuresare
nottaken.Itmustbestressedthatthedetectorshallbefullyefficientwithinca.1/3ofthetime
periodthatpassedsincethelatestmaintenanceworks.
Thedetectorisequippedwithaninternalshort‐circuitisolatorthatcutsoffanefficientpartofa
detectionlinefromtheadjacentshortedsectionwhatenablesfurtherundisturbeddetector
operation.Thedetectoralarmmodeissignalledwithaflashingredlightoftheilluminatingdiode.A
faultmode,technicalalarmandanactuationofashort‐circuitisolatoraresignalledwithyellow
flashesofthediode.Thedetectorsensitivitylevelisadjustable.Itssensitivityissettledfromthe
controlpanellevelchoosingoneofavailablesensitivitylevels:1stoperationmode–normal
sensitivity,2ndoperationmode–increasedsensitivity,3rdoperationmode–decreasedsensitivity.
Thedetectoroperationmodes(besidesthecontrolpanelalarmvariants)entailsthattheuserisable
toadapt,inthebestway,itsoperationcharacteristicstooperationinthedeterminedenvironment.
6OPERATIONANDSERVICINGCONDITIONS
Duringthedetectorsoperationitisobligatorytoavoidcreationofdeworrimeonthedetector
surfaceaswellastoprotectagainstexcessivecontaminationwithdust.
Fortheperiodofrepairworks,thedetectorshouldbetakenout(consideringp.3.1.
provisions)orprotectedwithappropriateforthispurposecover.Suchacovercanbe
obtainedfromaninstallerorpurchasedfromthemanufacturer.Incasethedetectoris
takenout,itsbaseshouldbeprotectedagainstbeingpaintedutilisingapaintingtape.
Detectorswhicharedamagedduringpaintingandrenovationworksduetoafaultofthe
personsexecutingsuchworks(e.g.painteddetectorcasing,stuck‐with‐paintnet,etc.)are
notsubjecttowarrantyrepairs.
Duringtheoperationlife,theDUR‐4046detectorshouldbesubjectedtoperiodicalinspection
accordingtoPKN‐CEN/TS54‐14:2006standard,whichisexecutedinordertoconfirmthedetector
properoperationanditsappropriateinteroperationwiththecontrolpanel.Theinspectionshouldbe
carriedoutatleastoncein6months.
Thedetectoroperationistestedwithasmokesimulatororsmokegenerator.
TheDUR‐4046opticalsmokedetectorlong‐lastingoperationmayresultindustaccumulationinside
itsinternalopticalchamber.Afterexceedingtheself‐regulationrangeduetothechamber
contaminationprogress,thedetectortriggersatechnicalalarmmodesendingexcessive
contaminationinformationtothecontrolpanel.Itcausesanecessitytocleanthedetectoroptical

module:thelabyrinthandlensesofbothdiodes–thetransmittingoneandphotodiode.Afailureto
carryouttheservicingworksmayresultinfalsealarmevokinginfuture.

ThedetectorassemblinganddismantlingisshownonFig.2.Inordertodismantlethedetectoritis
necessaryto:
a) pressingthenetlongtongue,turnthecoverrightinthebasketuntilitistakenout;
b) removetwoscrewsthatfixthelabyrinthandtakethelabyrinthout;
c) performthenecessarycleaning.

Adelicatebrushaswellasvacuumcleanerarerecommendedforcleaning.Compressedaircanbe
possiblyused.Itispermittedtowashthelabyrinthwithwarmwaterwithadditionofwashing‐up
liquid.Nodamppatchesshouldremainonthelabyrinthinternalsurfacesafterwashinganddrying.
Aftercleaningthedetectorshouldbeassembled,itsfunctioningshouldbetestedusingasmoke
imitatororsmokegeneratorandinstalledagainintothedetectionline.
Inthisordertoassemblethedetector,itisnecessaryto:
a) fastenthelabyrinthwithtwoscrews
b) placethebasketinthereversepositionasthatshownonthefigure;
c) insertthenetintothebasketpayingattentiontoitspositioning–alignmentwiththejuts;
d) insertthecoverintothebasketsothattheilluminatingdiodeisplacedalittletotherightin
relationtotheglass;
e) turnthecovertotheleft.
Note:Incasethecleaningdoesnotproducetherequiredresult,itisnecessarytosendthedetector
tothemanufacturerforrepair.
7DETECTORINSTALLATION
TheDUR‐4046detectorsareinstalled(height,arrangement)accordingtotheguidelinessettledby
theScientificandResearchCentreforFireProtection.Theyaremountedinpremiseswherethe
workingequipmentorstoredmaterialsmayemitvisiblesmokewhenafireoccurs.Thedetectorsare
intendedtooperateinloops,inloopswithstraightbranchesorinradialdetectionlinesofthePOLON
4000systemcontrolpanels(seethePOLON4900systemcontrolpanelInstallationandMaintenance
Manual).
Thedetectorsareinstalledinthe40modelrangebases.Thedetectionlineconnectionispresented
intheG‐40baseInstallationandMaintenanceManual.Anadditionalopticalalarmsignalofa
detectororagroupofdetectorscanbeobtainedbyconnectingtheWZ‐31alarmindicator.
Alarmsystemcablesareroutedinaccordancewiththeregulationsobligatoryforlowvoltage(below
42V)systems.
Note:Thedetectorsshouldnotbeinstalledincorrosiveatmospherethatcontainscausticgasesand
vapoursaswellasdust.Steamcondensationondetectorsisimpermissible.
8STORAGEANDTRANSPORTATION
8.1Storage
TheDUR‐4046detectorsshouldbekeptinclosedpremisesfreeofcausticgasesandvapoursatthe
temperaturebetween+0°Cand+40°C,andrelativehumiditynotexceeding80%at+35°C.
Inthetimeofstoring,thedetectorsshouldnotbeexposedtoeitherdirectsunlightorheatfrom
heatingequipment.
Thedetectorsstorageperiodintransportationpackingshouldnotexceed6months.
8.2Transportation
TheDUR‐4046detectorsshouldbecarriedinclosedtransportmeansspaces,inpackingthatmeets
therequirementsoftransportationregulationsinforce.Thetemperatureduringtransportation
shouldnotbelowerthan‐40°Candhigherthan+70°C,andrelativehumidityshouldnotbehigher
than95%at+45°Cor80%at+70°C.
