AccordingtotheEuropeanUnionregulationsitisforbiddentodisposethewasteequipment
markedwiththesignofacrossedcontainer(asshownbeside)toindustrialscrap‐heap.Any
wasteproduct,unsuitableforfurtheruse,shallbepassedtoawasteelectricandelectronic
equipmentcollectionpoint.Deliveringthewasteequipmenttospecialcollectionpointsfor
utilizationandrecyclingreducesanadverseimpactofharmfulcomponentsusedinthedevice
productionuponenvironmentandhumanhealth.

1PURPOSE
TheADR‐20Nopticalsmokedetectorisdesignedfordetectionofavisiblesmokethatisconcurrentwith
mostfirecombustion.Itisdedicatedtomonitorresidentialfacilities,cellars,garages,attics,etc.The
detectorisbattery‐operatedusingareplaceable9V6F22batterymountedinsideitscasing.
Itispossibletointer‐connectdetectorswithatwo‐corecablecreatingadetectingnetwork–detection
ofafirebyonedetectoractivatesanalarmsignalinotherdetectorsinthesupervisedpremises.

3SAFETYCONDITIONS
3.1Repairsandmaintenance
Anyrepairmustbecarriedoutbythemanufacturer.
POLON‐ALFAbearsnoresponsibilityfortheoperationofanyapparatusbeingservicedandrepairedby
unauthorisedpersonnel.
3.2Worksatheight
Anydetectorinstallationworkscarriedoutatheightmustbeexecutedwithparticularcareutilisingtools
andmachineryingoodworkingcondition.
Specialattentionshallbegiventothestabilityofladders,platforms,etc.
Anyelectrictoolshallbeusedstrictlyobeyingthesafetyrulesspecifiedinthemanufacturerinstruction
manuals.
3.3Anti‐dustingeyeprotection
Itisobligatorytouseprotectiveanti‐dustingglassesandmasksduringdetectorinstallationworksthat
producehighamountofdust,suchasholedrillingfordetectorbasemountingonceilings.
4GENERALDESCRIPTIONS
TheADR‐20Nsmokedetectorconsistsofthefollowingmainparts:base(1),bottom(9)withan
electroniccircuitandalabyrinthandacasing(6).Anopticalassemblyandanacousticsignallingdevice

areinstalledinsidethebottom.Thecasingenclosesawiregridthatpreventsirruptionofsmallinsectsor
piecesofdirt.

circuitboard(PCB)withcontactpinsarevisiblefromthebottomside.Thesecontactpinsholda
connector(11)tointerconnectseveraldetectorsinanetwork.
5INSTALLATION
Thedetectorsarerecommendedtobeinstalledinallroomsexposedtoahighfirehazardlevel.They
maybemountedinhallways,staircasesaswellasinpassagesbetweenroomsendangeredbyafire
occurrence.
Itisrecommendedtoinstallthedetectoronceilings,leavingatleast20cmofunobstructedspacefrom
wallsorotherelementsthatmayhamperfreesmokeaccesstothedetector.
Twoholes(with72‐mmspacing)shouldbedrilledinordertoinstallextensionanchorboltsfixingthe
detectortotheceiling.
Incasethedetectorsareintendedtoworkinanetwork,theyshouldbelinked–alldetectorGND
clampsmustbeinterconnected;thesameconcernstheI/Oclamps.
Whencablesareledunderthewallplaster(semi‐flushmounting),thebaseshouldbedrilledinits
centre;incaseofon‐plastercableleading(surfacemounting),theholeshouldbedrilledinthebaseside
wall(suggestedholelocationsareshownonFig.1)leavingtheminimumdistancefromthebottom.The
cablesshouldbeplacedintotheholesandthenthebaseshouldbefixedintheplaceintendedfor
installation.ThedetectorsmaybeinterconnectedusingatypicaltelecommunicationPVCinsulated
cableof0.12–0.5mm2crosssection(0.4–0.9mmdiameter).Twowiresmaybeconnectedtoone
contact(wireandresistorendings).Itisallowedtousedifferentsizewires(within0.4–0.9mmrange)
inonecontact.Theminimumlengthofthewireprotrudingfromthebaseis5cm.Bare(un‐insulated)
endsofwires(atleast8mmlong)shouldbepushedintheconnectortakenoutfromthebaseasitis
shownonFig.2.Theclampsoftheconnectorwillclenchthewiresautomatically.

Aremovalofawirefromtheconnectorispossibleafterpressingdownanorangeblockingpush‐button
withafingernail.Theconnectorwiththewiresshouldbepushedonthecontactpinsprotrudingfrom
thedetector.Thebatteryshouldbeconnectedandinsertedsothattheredblockingplatepullsback
accordingtotheFigure3.Thedetectoroperationshouldbecheckedbypressingdownthetestpush
buttonforfewseconds.ThetestresultispositivewhenaLEDflashesseveraltimesandsubsequentlyan
acousticsignalisheard.Theinspecteddetectorcanbeinstalledinthebaseturningitclockwiseuntilthe
catchessnap.

‐ordinarybatteries–min.1year;thedetectorwillworknormallyforatleast30dayssincethe
firstlowbatterysignalhasbeentransmitted
‐alkalinebatteries–min.2years;lowbatterysignalformin.30days
‐lithiumbatteries–min.3years;lowbatterysignalformin.60days.
Frequentdetectortestsanditsactivationinspectionswillresultintheoperationperiodshortening.

7MAINTENANCEINSTRUCTIONS
Incaseofdustaccumulationinsidethemeasuringchamber,whichmaybearesultofalong‐term
device,thedetectorsensitivitylevelwillincreaseuptoevokingfalsealarms.Itisrecommendedtoclean
theopticalmodule(i.e.thelabyrinthandlensesofbothtransmittingdiodeandreceivingphotodiode
whichareplacedwithinthelabyrinth)everyyear.
Inordertocarrythecleaningprocessout,itisnecessary:
−removethedetectorfromitsbaseturningitcounterclockwiseandtakingitoff;
−disconnecttheconnector(11);
−removetwoscrews(10)fasteningthebottom(9)tothecasing(6)ofthedetector;
−takethecasingoff;
−bendsoftlythecatchesthatholdthelabyrinth(5)andtakeitout;
−usingsoftbrushcleancarefullythelabyrinth,thehollowswherethediodesareplacedaswellas
themetalcoverfromthesideofthelabyrinth;
−incasesuchcleaningisnoteffective,itisallowedtowashthelabyrinthwithwarmwaterwith
anadditionofwashing‐upliquid;
−aftercleaninganddryingnowaterstainmaybeleftonthelabyrinthinternalsurfaces.
Aftercleaningreassemblethedetectorinthefollowingorder:
−checkwhetherthemetalcoverdoesnotconcealtheacousticsignallingdeviceopening;
−pressthelabyrinthdownuntilitscatchessnap;inthispositiontheprintedcircuitboardshould
closelyadherethebottomedges,thelabyrinthshouldbetightlyfastenedinuprightposition
(withnobending);
−placethemoduleintothecasingsothattheLEDandthetestingbuttonpokeoutabovethe
casingsurface;
−fastenthemoduletothecasingwithtwoscrews;
−connectabatteryandcheckthedetectoroperation;
−installthedetectorinsidethebase.

Asupplyingbatteryisnotincludedinastandarddetectorpackage–itshouldbeorderedseparately.
TheADR‐20Ndetectorsdonotcontainanyradioactivematerial.
Itshouldbeavoidedtoinstallthedetectorsindraughtyplaces.
Theyshouldnotbemountedabovestoves,kettlesandsimilarplaceswheresmokeorwatervapour
mayoccur.
