RMX®2000/4000 MPMRx Migration
Procedure
Verify before initiating this hardware migration procedure that your kit contains the following:
•RMX 2000:
—CNTL 2000 unit
—Power Module
—2 RTM LAN cards
—at least one MPMRx-D card
—Software License, for the latest RMX software version
•RMX 4000:
—CNTL 4000 unit
—at least one MPMRx-D card
—Software License, for the latest RMX software version
Guidelines
Prior to the installation make sure:
• Backup the configuration file. For more information, see the RMX 1500/1800/2000/4000
Administrator’s Guide, Software Management.
• That if Windows 7™ is installed on the workstation, Protected Mode must be disabled before
connecting the workstation.
•RMX 2000 users:
—Its is recommended that RMX software version 6.0 or later is installed on your system.
—Verify the chassis type of your RMX system. The MPMRx card requires a chassis of the type D
or E. For more information, see RMX 2000 Hardware Guide, Chapter 1, RMX Chassis Types.
—In the RTM IP card Properties pane locate the Card Part Number. If the part number DOES NOT
MATCH: BRD2114E-L0 or BRD2114E-R5, you are required to RMA the RTM IP card.
•RMX 4000 users:
—Its is recommended that RMX software version 6.0 or later is installed on your system.
The product names, Polycom®RealPresence®Collaboration Server and RMX®are used
interchangeably throughout this document.

RMX Upgrade
Upgrading the RMX with MPMRx cards involves the following processes:
•Process 1: Removing RMX Hardware
—RMX 2000. Remove the Power Supply, Control (CNTL) Unit, Media Card(s) and LAN card(s,
if installed).
—RMX 4000. Remove the Control (CNTL) Unit and Media Card(s).
•Process 2: Installing RMX Hardware
—RMX 2000. Install the Power Supply, Control (CNTL) Unit and LAN card(s).
—RMX 4000. Install the Control (CNTL) Unit and Media Card(s).
•Process 3: Software Upgrade
•Process 4: Install MPMRx card(s) on the RMX 2000/4000
Process 1: Removing RMX Hardware
Remove the following RMX Hardware:
• RMX 2000: Remove the Power Supply, Control (CNTL) Unit, Media Card(s) and LAN card(s). For
more information see Removing RMX 2000 Components.
• RMX 4000. Remove the Control (CNTL) Unit and Media Card(s). For more information, see
Removing RMX 4000 Components.
Removing RMX 2000 Components
1Power down the RMX 2000.
2Disconnect the following cables from the back panel:
—Power cable
—Optional - if LAN card is installed, remove any cables from the LAN card(s)
3Remove the following components:
—a: Remove the CNTL unit from the front of the RMX
—b: Remove the Power Supply drawer from the front of the RMX
—c: Remove any media card(s) from the front of the RMX
—d: Optional - if installed, remove the RTM Lan card(s) from the rear of the RMX
When handling electronic components, standard anti-static precautions must be observed:
•Wear a grounding strap
•Handle cards by their edges only and do not touch their components or connector pins
•Keep components in anti-static bags, when not installed in the RMX 2000/4000
On each component, captive screws must be loosened and ejector lever or levers must be opened.
Care must be taken when opening or closing the All Metal Ejector Lever or Modified PMC
Compatible Ejector Lever as described in “Appendix B - Using the Ejector Lever(s)” below. Ensure
that power to the RMX is turned OFF (O) before performing the procedures described below.
Do not remove the RTM IP and RTM ISDN (if installed) cards.

a: Removing the Existing Control (CNTL) Module from the MCU
1Unscrew the captive screw on the front panel of the RMX 2000 that secure the Control (CNTL)
Unit.
2Use the handle to pull the Control (CNTL) Unit. out of its slot in the Backplane.
3Carefully slide the Control (CNTL) Unit. out through the front panel.
b: Removing the Existing Power Supply Drawer from the MCU
1Unscrew the captive screws on the front panel of the RMX 2000 that secure the Power Supply.
2Use the handle to pull the Power Supply Module out of its slot in the Backplane.
3Carefully slide the Power Supply Module out through the front panel.
c: Removing the Existing MPM/MPM+/MPMx Card(s) from the MCU
1Unscrew the captive screws and remove the Media card(s)
2Use the ejector levers (see “Appendix B - Using the Ejector Lever(s)” on page 11) to pull the RTM IP
card out of its slot in the Backplane.
3Carefully slide the MPM/MPM+/MPMx card out through the front panel.
Remove all MPM/MPM+/MPMx cards from the MCU. Starting with version 8.3 different types of
Media cards cannot be installed simultaneously on a single MCU.

d: (Optional) Removing the Existing RTM LAN Card from the MCU
1Unscrew the captive screws on the rear panel of the RMX 2000 that secure the RTM LAN card.
2Use the ejector levers (see “Appendix B - Using the Ejector Lever(s)” on page 11) to pull the RTM
LAN card out of its slot in the Backplane.
3Carefully slide the RTM LAN card out through the rear panel.
Removing RMX 4000 Components
1Power down the RMX 4000.
2Remove the following components:
—a: Remove the CNTL unit from the front of the RMX.
—b: Remove any media card(s) from the front of the RMX.
a: Removing the Existing Control (CNTL) Module from the MCU
1Unscrew the captive screw on the front panel of the RMX 2000 that secure the Control (CNTL)
Unit.
2Use the handle to pull the Control (CNTL) Unit. out of its slot in the Backplane.
3Carefully slide the Control (CNTL) Unit. out through the front panel.
b: Removing the Existing MPM+/MPMx Card(s) from the RMX 4000
1Unscrew the captive screws and remove the Media card(s)
2Use the ejector levers (see “Appendix B - Using the Ejector Lever(s)” on page 11) to pull the MPM+/
MPMx card out of its slot in the Backplane.
3Carefully slide the MPM+/MPMx card out through the front panel.
On each component, captive screws must be loosened and ejector lever or levers must be opened.
Care must be taken when opening or closing the All Metal Ejector Lever or Modified PMC
Compatible Ejector Lever as described in “Appendix B - Using the Ejector Lever(s)” below. Ensure
that power to the RMX is turned OFF (O) before performing the procedures described below.

Process 2: Installing RMX Hardware
Install the following RMX Hardware:
• RMX 2000: Install the Power Supply, Control (CNTL 2000) Unit and LAN card(s). For more
information see Installing RMX 2000 Components.
• RMX 4000. Install the Control (CNTL 4000) Unit. For more information see Installing the CNTL
Unit on the RMX 4000.
Installing RMX 2000 Components
Install on the RMX 2000 the following components:
—a: Power Supply drawer
—b: CNTL 2000 unit
—c: Two RTM Lan card(s)
—d: Connect all the required cables (see “d: Connecting Cables” on page 6).
a: Install the Power Supply Drawer
1Slide in the Power Supply Module.
2Using the handle, push the Power Supply Module firmly into the Backplane, making sure it is
properly seated in its slot.
3Tighten the captive screws on the front panel of the RMX that secure the Power Supply Module.
On each component, the pins must be aligned and ejector lever or levers must be pushed back into
their housing and lock(ed) as described in the “Appendix B - Using the Ejector Lever(s)” on page 11.
Ensure also that each captive screw is fastened properly.

b: Install the CNTL 2000 Module
1Slide in the CNTL 2000 Module. Push the CNTL 2000 Module firmly into the Backplane, making
sure it is properly seated in its slot.
2Ensure that the metal ejector lever is fully retracted into its housing.
3Tighten the captive screws on the front panel of the RMX that secure the CNTL 2000 Module.
c: Installing the RTM LAN Card(s)
1Slide in the replacement RTM LAN card.
2Push the RTM LAN card firmly into the Backplane, making sure it is properly seated in its slot.
Ensure that the ejector levers are fully retracted into their housings (see “Appendix B - Using the
Ejector Lever(s)” on page 11).
3Tighten the captive screws on the rear panel of the RMX that secure the RTM LAN card.
4Repeat the procedure for the other RTM LAN card.
d: Connecting Cables
On the RMX 2000 connect the following cables to the back panel:
•Powercable
• RTM LAN: LAN cable to LAN 2 port
Do not remove the protective caps from LAN1, LAN3 and ShMG ports.

• RTM IP: Lan cable to LAN 2 port
Install the CNTL 4000 Unit on the RMX 4000
1Slide in the CNTL 4000 Module. Push the CNTL Module firmly into the Backplane, making sure it
is properly seated in its slot.
2Ensure that the metal ejector lever is fully retracted into its housing.
3Tighten the captive screws on the front panel of the RMX that secure the CNTL 4000 Module.

Process 3: Software Upgrade
1Power the Collaboration Server On.
—AC System - Turn ON the power by pressing on the power switch located on the rear panel
of the RealPresence Collaboration Server (RMX) 1500/2000/4000.
—DC System (RealPresence Collaboration Server (RMX) 4000) - Turn ON the Main that
supplies power to the Collaboration Server and then turn ON each of the DC power rail
modules.
2The new CNTL unit automatically upgrades the system software on the RMX.
Obtain the Activation Key
1Access the Service & Support page of the Polycom website at: http://support.polycom.com
2Log in with your Email Address and Password or register as a new user.
3Select Product Registration.
4Follow the on-screen instructions for Product Registration and Product Activation.
(The MCU’s serial number/service tag (tagged as ST) on the product sticker on the back of the
unit.) For more information, refer to the Collaboration Server Software Licence document you
received with your shipment.
5When the Product Activation Key is displayed, write it down or copy it for later pasting into the
Activation Key field of the Product Activation dialog box.
Login to the RMX
1When the Control Unit Error (ERR) LED is ON, and other Control Unit LEDs are turned OFF, then
open your browser and enter the IP Address of the RMX Control Unit.
2The RMX Welcome screen is displayed.
3In the RMX Web Client – Welcome screen, enter your User Name: POLYCOM and Password:
POLYCOM and click Login.
•RMX startup can take up to 25 minutes to complete. Do not turn OFF the RMX.
•On all cards, if during the startup phase the blue HS LED remains lit, please make sure that the
card is properly seated in the slot. A lit HS LED indicates that the card is in a powered down
mode. If this problem persists, contact your next level of support.
•Do not turn OFF the system during this upgrade process.
RMX Manager users are required to install the latest version software. Click the Install RMX
Manager link.
Enter the IP address of the RMX Control Unit and press Enter.

4The Product Activation dialog box appears with the serial number filled in:
5Select the “I accept the license agreement” check box to enable Online Registration of your
product.
6In the Activation Key field, enter or paste the Product Activation Key obtained earlier.
If you did not register your product earlier in the process and you do not have an Activation Key,
click the Polycom Resource Center button to access the Service & Support page of the Polycom
Support website.
7Click OK.
8A message indicating that the Product Activation Key was loaded successfully appears.
9If the Product Activation Key fails to load, please contact your vendor.
Process 4: Install MPMRx Card(s) on the RMX 2000/4000
When a single MPMRx media card is installed in the system, it must always be inserted in the top slot
of the RMX chassis. The RTM LAN/RTM ISDN card must be installed in the rear panel top slot on the
same level as the MPMRx card.
1On the MPMRx card to be installed, move the ejector levers to their fully open position. For more
information, see “Appendix B - Using the Ejector Lever(s)” on page 11.
2Carefully insert the MPMRx media card by making sure that the levers are in an open position
and push the card close to the chassis till the levers engage. With your thumbs holding the
“handles” and your index fingers holding the catches fully to left/right, push the card against the
chassis whilst closing the levers. Use your thumbs to push the card into place, and then lock the
catches into their place by using your thumbs to push it to the left/right.

Make sure that the levers are locked, and then tighten the screws into their housings.
3Push the MPMRx card firmly into the Backplane, making sure it is properly seated in its slot.
4Ensure that the metal ejector levers are fully retracted into their housings.
5Tighten the captive screws on the front panel of the RMX that secure the MPMRx card to the
chassis.
6Repeat the procedure for any additional MPMRx card(s).
7If the Fast Configuration Wizard dialog box appears, complete the wizard. For more information,
see the RMX 1500/1800/2000/4000 Getting Started Guide Chapter 2, Modifying the Default IP Service
and the ISDN/PSTN Network Service Settings. The Fast Configuration Wizard, requires a reset to
complete.
—When the Reset Confirmation dialog box appears, click Yes.
8If you backed up the RMX configuration do this:
—On the Collaboration Server menu, click Administration > Software Management >Restore
Configuration.
—Browse to the Restore Directory Path where the backed up configuration files are stored and
then click Restore.
For more information on Backup and Restore, see the RMX 1500/2000/4000 Administrator’s
Guide, Chapter 21, Software Management.
—Reset (System Restart button) the RMX to switch the RMX 2000/4000 to the MPMRx
Configuration Mode.
9The card startup procedure is complete when the MPMRx card(s) successfully completes startup
and the green RDY (Ready) LED remains lit on the MPMRx card(s) and Control Unit.
The MPMRx card status does not appear normal, the status changes only after the system is
restarted (System Restart button).
Its is recommended that slots that are left open on the MCU be sealed with blank panels. Request for
blank panels are to be referred to your next level of support.

Appendix A - RMX 2000 A/B/C-Type Chassis Upgrade
Chassis upgrade is required for RMX 2000 systems with A/B/C-type chassis. For more information
see the RMX 2000 Hardware Guide, Chapter 2, RMX Chassis Types. If your shipment included a new
chassis, start with "Installing RMX 2000 Components” procedure on page1-5.
Appendix B - Using the Ejector Lever(s)
Using the All Metal Ejector Lever
This ejector lever can be moved to 3 positions:
•Closed - The ejector levers are fully retracted and pushed up against the card’s panel.
•Partially Open - For card powering down mode. Partially open the ejector lever(s) until the blue
HS LEDs on the card and the Control Unit start flashing. When the HS LED remains lit the card is
in a powered down mode and you can remove the card.
•Fully Open - The card is released from the RMX housing.
Using the Modified PMC Compatible Ejector Lever
This ejector lever can be moved to 3 positions:
• Closed/Locked - Ejector lever(s) are gently pushed up against the card’s panel and is locked.
Ensure that the lock catch is in the standard closed position (shifted to the right as shown below)
•Partially Open - For card powering down mode. Partially open the ejector lever(s) until the blue
HS LEDs on the card and the Control Unit start flashing. When the HS LED remains lit the card is
in a powered down mode and you can remove the card
•Fully Open - In this position the card is released from the RMX housing and can be removed.

Handle
Unlocking the Lock Catch - With your index finger holding the
“handle” and your thumb shifting the catch to left, gently pull the handle
away from the chassis until the lever is “fully open”
Closing the Lever - Make sure that the lever is in an open position
and push card close to the chassis till the lever engages. With your
index finger holding the “handle” and your thumb holding the catch
fully to left, push the card against the chassis whilst closing the lever.
Release Lock Catch and allow it to “click” into place, ensuring that the
card is properly placed against the chassis.

Please be aware that the old RMX 2000 chassis and MPM/MPM+ board(s)
cannot be disposed of with household waste. Instead, it is your responsibility to
dispose of outdated equipment by handing it over to a designated collection point
for the recycling of electronic equipment. The collection and recycling of obsolete
equipment will help conserve natural resources and protect the environment.

equipment, please contact your local city office, your waste disposal service or
your next level of support where you purchased the product.
