This Quantum 614 with NE+ Electronics Technical Troubleshooting Guide covers diagnostic and repair scenarios for
Quantum 614 units equipped with NE+ electronics.
This guide is divided into two sections:
Section 1—No Power
Section 2—Error Code Diagnostics
How to Use Pride Model Specific Technical Troubleshooting Guides
All new Pride Model Specific Technical Troubleshooting Guides follow the same format. They are divided into sections
addressing symptoms such as No Power. If the mobility product is capable of giving error codes, one section will deal
with each code for that model.
The troubleshooting guide utilizes diagrams that are located in the front and back of the guide. These diagrams identify
main components by number (1, 2, 3, etc.) and all connectors by number with a lower case extension (1a, 2a, 3a, etc.).
The diagrams also show how all of the components are connected.
Using the Table of Contents, locate the section that best describes your troubleshooting issue. Each section will include
a list of symptoms, followed by a diagnosis of the problem, and finally a solution or procedure to solve the problem. The
procedure is set up as a numbered list of instructions, which may include one or more tests. Results of these tests will:
Direct you to change a component and retest the system.
Go to the next numbered step.
Advance to a numbered step farther along in the section.

Use For Reference
System Retest
When a procedure specifies to replace a component, you
must retest the system after replacing that component.
To retest the system:
1. Replace the component.
2. Reconnect any harnesses that were disconnected.
3. Reconnect the batteries (if disconnected).
4. Power on the controller.
5. Operate the power base.
—If the power base operates normally, then reassemble
the power chair.
—If another problem has surfaced, then go to that pro-
cedure in this guide.

SECTION 1 - NO POWER
Symptoms:
The batteries are fully charged.
All electrical components are connected correctly.
The power does not turn on when the on/off key is
pressed.
Diagnosis:
The power has been interrupted somewhere in the system.
Solution:
Use the following procedure to find the source of the inter-
ruption:
1. Measure voltage across pin 1 (B+) and pin 2 (B-) of the
off-board charger socket (connector 1a). See diagram 3
and figure 2.
— If the multimeter indicates about 25VDC (with correct
polarity), then replace the NE+ joystick module (1) and
retest the system.
— If the multimeter indicates less than 18VDC but greater
than 0VDC, then recharge the batteries and retest the
system.
— If the multimeter indicates 0VDC, then go to the next
step.
2. Remove the rear shroud. See figure 3.
3. Remove the front shroud. See figure 4.
4. Unplug connector 3a from connector 5b, then unplug
connector 4a from connector 5c. See diagram 2 or 3.

5. Measure voltage across pin 1 (-) and pin 2 (+) on
connector 3a. See figure 5.
— If the multimeter indicates 0VDC, then go to the next
step.
— If the multimeter indicates greater than 0VDC, then
plug connector 3a back into connector 5b and go to step 7 .
6. Measure voltage across connectors 3b and 3c. See
diagram 2 or 3.
— If the multimeter indicates greater than 0VDC, then
replace the front battery harness (3) and retest the
system.
— If the multimeter indicates 0VDC, then replace the
batteries and retest the system.
From step 5
7. Unplug connector 4a from connector 5c. See diagram 2
or 3
.
8. Measure voltage across pin 1 and pin 2 on connector 4a.
See figure 6.
— If the multimeter indicates 0VDC, then go to the next
step.
— If the multimeter indicates greater than 0VDC, then
plug connector 4a back into connector 5c and go to step 10 .
9. Measure voltage across connectors 4b and 4c. See
diagram 2 or 3.
— If the multimeter indicates greater than 0VDC, then
replace the rear battery harness (4) and retest the
system.
— If the multimeter indicates 0VDC, then replace the
batteries and retest the system.
From step 8
10. Unplug connector 5a from connector 9c. See diagram 3 .
11. Measure voltage across pin 1 (-) and pin 2 (+) of
connector 5a. See figure 7.
— If the multimeter indicates 0VDC, then go to the next
step.
— If the multimeter indicates greater than 0VDC, then
plug connector 5a back into connector 9c and go to step
13.
12. Measure resistance across the two terminals of the
circuit breaker (6). See figure 8.
— If the multimeter indicates less than 1 ohm, then replace
the battery cable (5) and retest the system.
— If the multimeter indicates greater than 1 ohm, then
replace the circuit breaker (6) and retest the system.

— If the multimeter indicates 0VDC, then replace the
power module (9) and retest the system.

plug connector 2a back into connector 9a and go to the

15. Unplug connector 2b from connector 1b. See diagram
2 or 3.
NOTE: If the chair is equipped with a power positioning
system, refer to the troubleshooting guide for that particular
power positioning system.
16. Measure voltage across pin 1 and pin 4 of connector 2b.
See figure 10.
— If the multimeter indicates 0VDC, then replace the bus
cable extension (2) and retest the system.
— If the multimeter indicates greater than 0VDC, then
replace the NE+ joystick module (1) and retest the
system.

SECTION 2 - ERROR CODE DIAGNOSTICS
The NE+ joystick module (1) has an LCD screen. See figure 11 . The charging and lights indicators are lit steadily when
the corresponding function is active. When these indicators are flashing, they indicate the location of a problem. When
encountering warning or error indicators on the LCD screen, more information can be found by connecting a Curtis
Handheld Programmer and checking errors in the Diagnostics section of the programmer. If the error is happening as you
check with the programmer, then the information can be found under Actual Faults in the Diagnostics section of the
programmer.
See figure 12 . If the error occurred previously but is not currently displayed, then the information can be
found under Fault History in the Diagnostics section of the programmer.
See figure 13 . For any warning or error indicator
not noted in this technical troubleshooting guide, contact Quantum Technical Service for further
troubleshooting.

Battery Charging or Drive Inhibit
Symptoms:
The power chair powers on, but will not drive.
The joystick displays “Battery Charging or Drive Inhibit”
error code when the on/off key is pressed. See Table 1.
The off-board charger is not plugged into the NE+ joystick
module (1).
Diagnosis:
There is an open in the inhibit circuit.
Solution:
Use the following procedure to find the source of the error:
NOTE: If the power chair is not equipped with a PTO harness
and a round 4-pin barrel connector, it will have a 14-pin run
plug (10) in connector 9e. If the power chair is equipped with
the 14-pin run plug, go to step 3.
1. Unplug the run plug (12) from connector 11b. See diagram
2 or 3.
2. Place a jumper between pin 3 and pin 4 of connector 11b.
See figure 14. Try to drive the chair.
WARNING! Jumping pins 1 and 2 could
cause sparking and/or cause the fuse in
the harness to blow.
— If the power chair drives, then replace the run plug (12) and
retest the system.
— If the power chair does not drive, then go to the next step.
3. Unplug connector 11a, or the 14-pin run plug (10) if
equipped, from connector 9e. See diagram 3.
4. Place a jumper from pin 1 to pin 9 on connector 9e. See
figure 15. Try to drive the chair.
WARNING! Jumping the incorrect pins
could cause sparking and/or damage to
the electronics.
— If the power chair drives, then replace the power take-off/
inhibit harness (11) or the 14-pin run plug (10) and retest the
system.
— If the power chair does not drive, then the power module (9)
may be programmed incorrectly. Verify the inhibit
program. See figure 16. The inhibit should be set to “High
Inhibit”.

System Lock Mode
Symptoms:
The joystick displays a key symbol to the right of the
battery gauge. See Table 1.
The batteries are fully charged.
All electrical components are properly connected.
The power chair powers on but the joystick allows no
other functions.
Diagnosis:
The power chair is in System Lock mode.
Solution:
Use the following procedure to place the joystick in System
Lock mode:
1. Turn on the power to the joystick.
2. While the power is on, press the Mode switch until the
joystick powers off.
To turn the system back on:
1. Press the on/off key to power on the joystick display.
2. Push the joystick forward until a beep is heard.
3. Push the joystick backward until a beep is heard.
NOTE: System Lock must be enabled (ON) in order to lock
out the joystick. Refer to the programming text. See figure 17.
Open Motor Error
Symptoms:
The batteries are fully charged.
All electrical components are connected correctly.
The power turns on but displays “Open Motor” error
code when the joystick is deflected. See figure 18.
One or both motors do not move.
Diagnosis:
There is an open circuit on one or both motors.
Solution:
Use the following procedure to find the source of the problems:
1. Remove the front shroud. See figure 4.
2. Unplug connector 7a from connector 9b. See diagram 3 .
3. Measure resistance across pin 1 and pin 2 of connector 7a.
See figure 19 .
— If the multimeter does not indicate about 0.5-1.5 ohms,
then replace the right motor (8) and retest the system.
— If the multimeter indicates about 0.5-1.5 ohms, then
plug connector 7a back into connector 9b and go to the
next step.

— If the multimeter does not indicate about 0.5-1.5 ohms,
then replace the left motor (7) and retest the system.
— If the multimeter indicates about 0.5-1.5 ohms, then
replace the power module (9) and retest the system.
Motor/Brake Error
Symptoms:
The batteries are fully charged.
All electrical components are connected correctly.
The power turns on but displays “Motor/Brake” error
code. See figure 21.
Diagnosis:
There is a brake open.
Solution:
Use the following procedure to clear the error code:
1. Ensure that both freewheel levers are in drive mode.
Refer to the freewheel operation label located on the
power base.
2.Remove the front shroud. See figure 4.
3. Unplug connector 7a from connector 9b. See diagram 3 .
4. Measure resistance across pin 3 and pin 4 of connector
7a.
See figure 22 .
— If the multimeter indicates about 35 ohms, then go to the
next step.
— If the multimeter does not indicate about 35 ohms, then
replace the right motor/brake assembly and retest the
system.
5. Unplug connector 8a from connector 9d. See diagram 3 .
6. Measure resistance across pin 3 and pin 4 of connector
8a.
See figure 23 .
— If the multimeter indicates about 35 ohms, then replace
the power module (9) and retest the system.
— If the multimeter does not indicate about 35 ohms, then
replace the right motor/brake assembly and retest the
system.

Communications or Software Error
Symptoms:
The batteries are fully charged.
All electrical components are connected correctly.
The power turns on but displays a fault code, other than
previously discussed, when the on/off key is pressed.
See Table 1.
A communication or software fault is found under
Actual Faults or Fault History in the Diagnostics section
of the Curtis Handheld Programmer.
Diagnosis:
There is a module error in the system.
Solution:
Use the following procedure to find the source of the error:
1. Ensure that all of the bus connections are correct. See
diagram 3
.
2. Measure resistance on the bus cables.
See figure 24 .
— If the multimeter indicates an open for any of the
measurements, then replace the bus cable extension (2)
and retest the system.
— If the multimeter indicates less than 1 ohm for all
measurements, then go to the next step.
3. If the power chair is equipped with multiple input
devices, then there will be a splitter or multiplier on the
bus line.
— If there is no splitter, then contact Quantum Technical
Service for further troubleshooting assistance.
— If there is a splitter or multiplier on the bus line, then go
to the next step.
4. Measure resistance on the splitter or multiplier bus
cables. See figure 25.
— If the multimeter indicates an open for any of the
measurements, then replace the splitter or multiplier
and retest the system.
— If the multimeter indicates less than 1 ohm for all of the
measurements, then go to the next step.
5. Contact Quantum Technical Service for further
troubleshooting.
