designfeatureswillprovideyouwiththeconveniencesyouexpect duringyour dailyactivities.Onceyouunderstandhow
tosafelyoperate and care for your power chair, it should give you years of troublefreeoperation and service.
Readand followallinstructions,warnings,andnotesinthismanual beforeattempting tooperateyourpowerchairforthe
first time. Inaddition, your safetydependsupon you, as well asyour provider,caretaker, orhealthcare professional in
usinggoodjudgement.

GENERAL GUIDELINES
MANDATORY! Do not operate your new power chair for the first time without completely reading
and understanding this owner’s manual.
Your power chairis astate-of-the-artlife-enhancement devicedesignedtoincreasemobility.Pride providesanextensive
varietyof products to best fit the individual needs of the power chair user. Please be aware that the final selection and
purchasing decision regarding the type of power chair to be used is the responsibility of the power chair user, who is
capableof makingsucha decision, andhis/herhealthcare professional (i.e.,medicaldoctor,physicaltherapist, etc.).
Thecontents ofthismanual are basedonthe expectationthatamobility deviceexperthasproperly fittedthepower chair
totheuserandhasassistedtheprescribing healthcareprofessional and/ortheQuantumRehabSpecialistintheinstruction
processfor the use of the product.
Therearecertainsituations,includingsomemedicalconditions, wherethepowerchairuserwillneedtopracticeoperating
the power chair in the presence of a trained attendant.Atrained attendant can be defined as a family member or care
professionalspeciallytrainedinassistingapowerchairuserinvariousdailylivingactivities.
Asyoubeginusingyourpowerchairduringdailyactivities, youwillprobablyencountersituationsinwhichyouwill need
somepractice.Simplytakeyourtimeandyouwillsoonbeinfullandconfidentcontrolasyoumaneuverthroughdoorways,
onandoffofelevators, up and down ramps, and over moderate terrain.
Belowaresome precautions,tips,andothersafetyconsiderationsthatwillhelp youbecomeaccustomedtooperatingyour
powerchairsafely.
Modifications
Pridehasdesignedandengineeredyourpowerchairtoprovidemaximummobilityandutility.Awiderangeofaccessories
isavailable from your Quantum Rehab Specialist to furthercustomizeyourpowerchairtobetter suit your needs and/or
preferences.However,under no circumstancesshouldyoumodify,add,remove, or disableanyfeature,part, or function
ofyour power chair.
WARNING! Do not modify your power chair in any way not authorized by Pride. Do not use
accessories if they have not been tested or approved for Pride products.
Pre-Ride Safety Check
Gettoknowthefeelofyourpowerchairanditscapabilities.Priderecommendsthatyouperformasafetycheckbefore
eachuse to make sure your power chair operates smoothly and safely.
Performthe following inspections prior to using your power chair:
!Checkforpropertireinflation.Maintainbutdonotexceed35psi(2.4bar)ineachtireifequippedwithpneumatictires.
!Checkallelectricalconnections.Makesuretheyaretightandnotcorroded.
!Checkallcontrollerconnectionstothepowerbase.Makesuretheyaresecuredproperly.
!Checkthebrakes.SeeVII.“CareandMaintenance.”
!Checkbatterycharge.SeeVI.“BatteriesandCharging.”

Weight Limitations
Your powerchairis ratedforamaximumweight capacity.Please refertothe specificationstablefor thislimit.
WARNING! Stay within the specified weight capacity of your power chair. Exceeding the weight
capacity voids your warranty. Pride will not be held responsible for injuries and/or property damage
resulting from failure to observe weight limitations.
WARNING! Do not carry passengers on your power chair. Carrying passengers on your power
chair may affect the center of gravity, resulting in a tip or a fall.
Tire Inflation
Ifyourpowerchair isequippedwith pneumatictires,you shouldcheckor havetheair pressurecheckedregularly.Proper
inflationpressureswillprolong thelifeof yourtiresand helpensurethe smoothoperationof yourpowerchair.
WARNING! It is important that 35 psi (2.4 bar) tire pressure be maintained in pneumatic tires at all
times. Do not underinflate or overinflate your tires. Low pressure may result in loss of control, and
overinflated tires may burst. Failure to maintain 35 psi (2.4 bar) tire pressure in pneumatic tires at
all times may result in tire and/or wheel failure.
WARNING! Inflate your power chair drive tires from a regulated air source with an available pressure
gauge. Inflating your tires from an unregulated air source could overinflate them, resulting in a
burst tire.
Incline Information
Moreandmorebuildingshaverampswithspecifieddegreesofinclination,designedforeasyandsafeaccess.Someramps
mayhave turning switchbacks(180-degreeturns) that requireyoutohave good corneringskillsonyour power chair.
!Proceedwithextremecautionasyouapproachthedowngradeofaramporotherincline.
!Takewideswingswithyourpowerchair’sfrontwheelsaroundanytightcorners.Ifyoudothat,thepowerchair’srearwheelswill
followawidearc,notcutthecornershort,andnotbumpintoorgethunguponanyrailingcorners.
!Whendrivingdownaramp,keepthepowerchair’sspeedadjustmentsettotheslowestspeedsettingtoensureasafelycontrolled
descent.
!Avoidsuddenstopsandstarts.
Whenclimbinganincline,trytokeepyourpowerchairmoving.Ifyoumuststop,startupagainslowlyandthenaccelerate
cautiously. When driving down an incline, set your power chair to the slowest speed setting and drive in the forward
directiononly.Ifyourpower chairstartsto move downtheincline fasterthanyouanticipated ordesired,allow it tocome
toa complete stopbyreleasing the joystick, thenpushthe joystick forwardslightlytoensure a safelycontrolleddescent.
WARNING! When climbing an incline, do not zigzag or drive at an angle up the face of the incline.
Drive your power chair straight up the incline. This greatly reduces the possibility of a tip or a fall.
Always exercise extreme caution when negotiating an incline.
WARNING! You should not travel up or down a potentially hazardous incline (i.e., areas covered
with snow, ice, cut grass, or wet leaves).
WARNING! When on any sort of an incline or decline, never place the power chair in freewheel
mode while seated on it or standing next to it.
WARNING! Never travel down an incline backward. Doing so may cause the power chair to tip.
WARNING! If your power chair is equipped with a reclining seatback, do not attempt to negotiate
inclines with the seat in a reclined position. Do not attempt to negotiate obstacles with the seat
in a reclined position unless an attendant is present to help stabilize the chair. Failure to heed
may result in the power chair tipping over.

WARNING! Even though your power chair is capable of climbing slopes greater than those illustrated
in figure 1, do not, under any circumstances, exceed the incline guidelines or any other
specifications presented in this manual. Doing so could cause instability in your power chair.
Incompliance with theAmericanswith DisabilitiesActof1990, all handicap publicaccessrampsare required to havea
maximumslope of 5° (8.7%).Therefore,Priderecommendsthat the maximum slopeofaninclineyou attempt to safely
ascend or descend on your power chair does not exceed 5° (8.7%). See figure 1.
WARNING! Any attempt to climb or descend a slope steeper than 5° (8.7%) may put your power
chair in an unstable position and cause it to tip.
Freewheel Mode
Yourpowerchairisequippedwithtwomanualfreewheelleverstoallowformanualmaneuverabilitybyatrainedattendant.
Formore information abouthowto place your powerchairinto and outoffreewheelmode, see III.“YourPower Chair.”
WARNING! Do not use your power chair in freewheel mode without an attendant present.
WARNING! Do not attempt to personally place your power chair in freewheel mode while seated
on it. Ask an attendant for assistance if necessary.
WARNING! Do not place your power chair in freewheel mode while on an incline. This could cause
the chair to roll uncontrollably on its own.
Braking Information
Your powerchairis equipped withtwopowerfulbrake systems:
!Regenerative—useselectricitytorapidlyslowthevehiclewhenthejoystickreturnstothecenter/stopposition.
!DiscParkBrake—activatesmechanicallyafterregenerativebrakingslowsthevehicletonearstop,orwhenpowerisremoved
fromthesystemforanyreason.
Cornering Information
Whileyour power chairisequippedwith rear casterwheelsandfront anti-tip wheels, excessivelyhighcorneringspeeds
canstill create the possibility of tipping. Factors which affect the possibility of tipping include, but are not limited to:
corneringspeed,steeringangle(howsharply youareturning),unevenroad surfaces,inclinedroadsurfaces,ridingfroman
area of low traction to an area of high traction (such as passing from a grassy area to a paved area – especially at high
speedwhile turning), and abrupt directional changes. High cornering speeds are not recommended. If you feel that you
maytipoverinacorner,reduce yourspeedandsteeringangle(i.e.,lessen thesharpnessoftheturn)toprevent yourpower
chairfromtipping.
WARNING! When cornering sharply, reduce your speed and maintain a stable center of gravity.
This greatly reduces the possibility of a tip or fall.

Public Streets and Roadways
WARNING! You should not operate your power chair on public streets and roadways. Be aware
that it may be difficult for traffic to see you when you are seated on your power chair. Obey all
local pedestrian traffic rules. Wait until your path is clear of traffic, and then proceed with
extreme caution.
Outdoor Driving Surfaces
Yourpowerchairisdesignedtoprovideoptimumstabilityundernormaldrivingconditions—dry,levelsurfacescomposed
ofconcrete,blacktop,orasphalt.However,Priderecognizesthattherewill betimeswhenyouwillencounterother surface
types.Forthisreason,yourpowerchairisdesignedtoperformadmirablyonpackedsoil,grass,andgravel.Feelfreeto
useyourpowerchairsafelyonlawnsandinparkareas.
!Reduceyour power chair’s speed whendrivingonuneven terrain and/or softsurfaces.
!Avoidtallgrassthatcanentangletherunninggear.
!Avoidlooselypacked gravel and sand.
!Ifyou feelunsureabout adrivingsurface, avoidthatsurface.
Inclement Weather Precautions
Exposureof yourpowerchair toinclementweather conditions shouldbeavoided wheneverpossible.If suddenly caught
up in rain, snow, severe cold or heat while operating your power chair, proceed to shelter at the earliest opportunity.
Thoroughlydry yourpowerchair beforestoring,charging,oroperating yourpowerchair.
WARNING! Operating in rain, snow, salt, mist/spray conditions, and on icy/slippery surfaces can
have an adverse affect on the electrical system. Maintain and store your power chair in a dry and
clean condition.
WARNING! Prolonged exposure to hot or cold conditions may affect the temperature of upholstered
and non-upholstered items on the power chair, possibly resulting in skin irritation. Exercise caution
when using your power chair in extremely hot or cold conditions or when exposing your power
chair to direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time.
Stationary Obstacles (Steps, Curbs, etc.)
Proceedwithextreme caution when driving near raised surfaces, unprotectedledgesand/or drop-offs (curbs, porches,
stairs,etc.).Besureyourpower chairistravelingperpendicularto anycurbyoumaybe requiredto navigate.Seefigure2.

WARNING! Do not attempt to have your power chair climb or descend an obstacle that is higher
than 2 in. (5 cm) unless you have the assistance of an attendant.
WARNING! Do not attempt to have your power chair proceed backward down any step, curb, or
other obstacle. This may cause the power chair to tip.
Stairs and Escalators
Powerchairsarenot designed to travel up or downstairsor escalators. Always use an elevator.
WARNING! Never use your power chair to negotiate steps or escalators.
Doors
!Determineifthedooropenstowardorawayfromyou.
!Driveyourpowerchairgentlyandslowlyforwardtopushthedooropen.Ordriveyourpowerchairgentlyandslowlybackward
topullthedooropen.
Elevators
Modernelevators have a door edge safety mechanism that, when pushed, reopens the elevator door(s).
!Ifyouareinthedoorwayofanelevatorwhenthedoor(s)begintoclose,pushontherubberdooredgeorallowtherubberdoor
edgetocontactthepowerchairandthedoorwillreopen.
!Usecarethatpocketbooks,packages,orpowerchairaccessoriesdonotbecomecaughtinelevatordoors.
Lift/Elevation Products
Ifyouwillbetravelingwithyourpower chair,youmayfinditnecessarytouse alift/elevation producttoaidintransporta-
tion.Priderecommendsthatyou closely review the instructions, specifications, and safety information set forthbythe
manufacturerofthelift/elevationproductbeforeusingthatproduct.
WARNING! Never sit on your power chair when it is being used in connection with any type of lift/
elevation product. Your power chair was not designed with such use in mind and any damage or
injury incurred from such use is not the responsibility of Pride.
Motor Vehicle Transport
Priderecommends thatyoudo notremainseated inyourpower chairwhiletraveling in amotorvehicle. Thepowerchair
shouldbestowed in the trunk ofacar or in the backofa truck or van withbatteries removed and properly secured.
WARNING! Do not sit on your power chair while it is in a moving vehicle.
WARNING! Always be sure your power chair and its batteries are properly secured when it is being
transported. Batteries should be secured in an upright position and protective caps should be
installed on the battery terminals. Batteries should not be transported with any flammable or
combustible items.
Positioning Belts
Your Quantum Rehab Specialist,therapist(s), and other healthcare professionals areresponsible for determining your
requirementfor a positioningbeltin order to operateyourpower chair safely.
WARNING! If you require a positioning belt to safely operate your power chair, make sure it is
fastened securely in order to reduce the possibility of a fall from the power chair.
WARNING! The positioning belt is not designed for use as a seat belt in a motor vehicle. Nor is
your power chair suitable for use as a seat in any vehicle. Anyone traveling in a vehicle should be
properly belted into seats approved by the vehicle manufacturer.

Batteries
In addition to following the warnings below, be sure to comply with all other battery handling information. For more
informationabout yourpowerchair’sbatteries, seeVI. “BatteriesandCharging.”
WARNING! Power chair batteries are heavy. See specifications table. If you are unable to lift that
much weight, be sure to get help. Use proper lifting techniques and avoid lifting beyond your
capacity.
WARNING! Battery posts, terminals, and related accessories contain lead and lead compounds.
Wash hands after handling.
WARNING! Always protect the batteries from freezing and never charge a frozen battery. Charging
a frozen battery may result in damage to the battery.
WARNING! Connect your battery harnesses in the proper manner. RED (+) cables must be connected
to positive (+) battery terminals/posts. BLACK (-) cables must be connected to negative (-) battery
terminals/posts. Protective caps should be installed over all battery terminals. REPLACE cables
immediately if damaged.
Removable Parts
WARNING! Do not attempt to lift or move a power chair by any of its removable parts, including the
armrests, seat, foot riggings, controller, and shrouds.
Preventing Unintended Movement
WARNING! If you anticipate being seated in a stationary position for an extended period of time,
turn off the power. This will prevent unexpected motion from inadvertent joystick contact. This
will also eliminate the possibility of unintended chair movement from electromagnetic (EM) sources.
Reaching and Bending
Neverreach,lean,orbendwhile drivingyourpowerchair. Ifit isabsolutelynecessarytoreach, lean,orbendwhileseated
onyour power chair,it is important to maintain a stable center ofgravity and keep the power chair from tipping. Pride
recommendsthatthe power chair user determine his/her personallimitations and practice bending and reaching inthe
presenceofaqualifiedhealthcareprofessional.
WARNING! Do not bend, lean, or reach for objects if you have to pick them up from the floor by
reaching down between your knees or if you have to reach over the back of the seat. Movements
such as these may change your center of gravity and the weight distribution of the power chair,
possibly causing your power chair to tip.
WARNING! Keep your hands away from the tires when driving. Be aware that loose fitting clothing
can become caught in drive tires.

Transfers
Transferring onto and off of your power chair requires a
goodsenseof balance.Alwayshaveanattendantorhealth-
careprofessional present whilelearningtoproperly trans-
feryourself.
Toeliminatethepossibilityofinjury,Priderecommendsthat
youor a trained attendant perform the following tasks be-
foreattemptingatransfer:
!Turnoffthepowertothecontroller.
!Ensureyourpowerchairisnotinfreewheelmode.SeeIII.
“YourPowerChair.”
!Turn the caster wheels toward the transfer destination to
improvepowerchairstabilityduringtransfer.
!Makesurebotharmrestsareflippeduporremovedfrom
yourpowerchair.
!Flipupthefootplatformormovethelegrestsaside;thiswill
helptokeepyourfeetfromgettingcaughtonthefootrigging
duringthetransfer.
!Reduce the distance between your power chair and the
objectyouaretransferringonto.
WARNING! Before transferring, position yourself as far back as possible in the power chair seat
to prevent the power chair from tipping forward during transfer.
WARNING! Avoid putting all of your weight on the power chair armrests and do not use the armrests
for weight bearing purposes, such as transfers. Such use may cause the power chair to tip, resulting
in a fall from the power chair.
WARNING! Avoid putting all of your weight on the foot riggings. Such use may cause the power
chair to tip.
Prescription Drugs/Physical Limitations
Usersmustexercise careand commonsense whenoperatingapowerchair.Thisincludesawarenessofsafetyissueswhen
takingprescribed orover-the-counterdrugs orwhenthe userhasspecific physicallimitations.
WARNING! Consult your physician if you are taking prescribed or over-the-counter medication or
if you have certain physical limitations. Some medications and limitations may impair your ability
to operate your power chair in a safe manner.
Alcohol/Smoking
Thepowerchairusermustexercise careandcommonsensewhenoperatinghis/her powerchair.Thisincludes awareness
ofsafetyissueswhileundertheinfluenceofalcoholorwhilesmoking.
WARNING! Do not operate your power chair while you are under the influence of alcohol, as this
may impair your ability to operate your power chair in a safe manner.

WARNING! Although the power chair seat has passed the necessary testing requirements for
cigarette smoke, Pride recommends that you adhere to the following safety guidelines:
!Do not leave lit cigarettes unattended.
!Keep ashtrays a safe distance from the seat cushions.
!Always make sure cigarettes are completely extinguished before disposal.
Electromagnetic and Radio Frequency Interference (EMI/RFI)
WARNING! Laboratory tests have shown that electromagnetic and radio frequency waves can
have an adverse affect on the performance of electrically-powered mobility vehicles.
Electromagneticand Radio Frequency Interference can come from sources such as cellular phones, mobile two-way
radios(such as walkie-talkies), radio stations,TVstations,amateurradio(HAM) transmitters, wireless computer links,
microwavesignals,pagingtransmitters, and medium-range mobile transceivers used by emergencyvehicles.In some
cases,thesewavescancauseunintendedmovementordamageto thecontrolsystem.Everyelectrically-poweredmobility
vehiclehasanimmunity(orresistance)toEMI.Thehighertheimmunitylevel,thegreatertheprotectionagainstEMI.This
producthas been tested and has passed at an immunity level of 20 V/m.
WARNING! Be aware that cell phones, two-way radios, laptops, and other types of radio transmitters
may cause unintended movement of your electrically-powered mobility vehicle due to EMI.
Exercise caution when using any of these items while operating your mobility vehicle and avoid
coming into close proximity of radio and TV stations.
WARNING! The addition of accessories or components to the electrically-powered mobility vehicle

Electronics Tray
Theelectronics tray is located on the back of the power base. See figures 6 and 7.The ammeter,theoptional onboard
charger,the chargerpower cord receptacle,themaincircuit breaker,the controllerconnector,andthechargerfuse areall
locatedon the electronics tray.
Ammeter:Theammeter displays thecharger’scurrentoutputinamps. SeeVI.“Batteriesand Charging.”
ChargerPowerCordReceptacle(withoptionalonboardcharger):This is where the chargerpowercordplugsinto
the power base.
MainCircuitBreaker:Themaincircuitbreakerisasafetyfeaturebuiltintoyourpowerchair.Whenthebatteriesandthe
motorsareheavily strained(e.g., fromexcessive loads),the maincircuit breakertrips toprevent damageto themotors and
theelectronics.Ifthecircuittrips,allowyour powerchairto“rest”forapproximatelyone minute.Next, pushinthecircuit
breaker button, turn on the controller, and continue normal operation. If the main circuit breaker continues to trip
repeatedly,contactyour QuantumRehabSpecialist.
ControllerConnector: This is wherethecontrollerconnects to thepowermodule. Each controllerusesadifferent type
ofcable.Regardlessof whichtypeof controllerisused, thecablemust besecuredto theseatassembly andnotallowed to
dragon the floor.
ChargerFuse (withoptionalonboardcharger):The charger fuseprotectsthe ammeter fromcurrentoverload.There
arethreefusesonthe utility tray.The top one is the chargerfuse.Thebottomtwoarespares.
Active-Trac Suspension
TheQuantum 1121is equipped withActive-Trac Suspension (ATS).ATSis a suspensionsystemdesignedto make your
powerchairtraverse differenttypesofterrainandobstacleswhilemaintainingsmoothoperation.WithATS,the frontanti-
tipwheelswork inconjunctionwiththemotorsuspensiontohelpyou maneuveroverobstaclesinexcessof3in.(7.62cm)
inheight.
Asthe front anti-tip wheels come in contact with an obstacle, the front anti-tip wheel assembly is drawn upward.Atthe
sametime,the motorsare forceddownward. Thisallows themotorstopushtheyourpowerchairoveranobstaclewithout
thepossibilityof becoming“hung up”on theobstacle.
ATSalso helps inday-to-dayoperatingconditions. For instance, whenyoureleasethe joystick, yourpowerchairbegins
toslow down. As the chair slows down,the front anti-tip wheels willautomatically drop toward the ground.This will
reducethe forwardtipthat istypicallyencountered withcenter-wheeldrive chairs.

Manual Freewheel Lever
Foryourconvenience, yourpower chairis equippedwith amanualfreewheelsystem.Thissystemconsistsofoneormore
freewheelleverswhichenableyoutodisengagethe drivemotors andmaneuverthechairmanually.
WARNING! Do not use your power chair while the drive motors are disengaged! Do not disengage
the drive motors when your power chair is on an incline, as the unit could roll on its own. Only
engage the freewheel mode when on a level surface.
WARNING! It is important to remember that when your power chair is in freewheel mode, the
braking system is disengaged.
Tooperate the dual manual freewheellevers:
1. Pullupthemanualfreewheelleveroneachmotorforfreewheelmode(drivedisengaged).Seefigure8.
2. Pushdownthemanualfreewheelleveroneachmotorfordrivemode(driveengaged).Seefigure9.
Ifaleverisdifficulttomoveineitherdirection,rock yourpower chairbackandforthslightly.Thelevershouldthen move
tothe desired position.

INITIAL ASSEMBLY
Yourpowerchairmayrequiresomeassemblyeitherbeforeinitialuseoraftertransportation.Itmayalsorequiredisassembly
tomakesomecomfortadjustments.
NOTE: Any nylon insert lock nut removed during the disassembly or adjustment of the power chair must be
replaced with a new nut. Nylon insert lock nuts should not be reused as it may cause damage to the nylon
insert, resulting in a less secure fit. Replacement nylon insert lock nuts are available at local hardware stores
or through your Quantum Rehab Specialist.
Seat Installation
TheUniversalMountingSystem(UMS)consistsofuniversalpartsthat may be used on the Specialty Seat or any high-
backseat,regardlessofseatwidthorseat depth. Thetwomaincomponentsarealuminumextrusions thatcan bemounted
tothe seatbase.These extrusionsattachtoa pairoftrapeze bars thataremounted tofoursteel towers. Ifyourpower chair
isequipped with aSpecialtySeat,SynergySeat, or SynergyTRU-Balance,refertothe information providedinseparate
manuals.If your power chair is equipped with a high-back seat, a reclining seat, or a power elevatingseat, refer to the
followinginformation.
WARNING!Do not pick up the seat frame by the armrests. They are free to pivot, and you may lose control
of the seat if they do so.

4. Fliptheseatlatchsafetydown.
WARNING! Make sure the seat latch safety is flipped down before using your power chair.
5. Installthecontrollerintooneofthearmrests.SeeV.“ComfortAdjustments.”
6. Plugthecontrollercable(s)intotheconnectorontheelectronicstray.
7. Routethecabletoensurethatthecablecannotbepinchedintheseathinge.
