IntroductIon
This Quick Start Guide is shipped with the VSky H3970 (PTCS) Storage Server from PROMISE
Technology. It is intended to guide the user through the initial installation and setup procedures
for hardware and system setup. This guide is written for technicians, system integrators and other
knowledgeable professionals who setup and maintain servers, data storage devices, networking
equipment and other electronic data and communications systems hardware.
Before You Start
Take note of the following operations before you start to remove or install internal components.
Note
The components shown in this chapter are mainly for your
reference. Please take the actual shipment as standard.
Caution
Moving the Power On/Off switch to the Off position
does not completely remove power from the system.
Some portions of the power supply and some internal
circuitry remain active. Disconnect all power cords
from the server to completely remove power from the
system.
Warning
To reduce the risk of injury from electric shock,
remove the power cord to completely disconnect
power from the system.

Task List
The list of tasks below should be performed in the order they appear. This list is a general
outline of the initial setup procedure. Details for completing the rst three tasks are provided in
this document. For details on installing an operating system onto the server (Task 8 in the list),
please consult the documentation included with the operating system installation materials. Driver
installation for the HBA hardware and RAID controller (Task 9 in the list) is provided by LSI, the
HBA card manufacturer. The procedure used for driver installation will depend on which operating
system and version of the OS is installed.
Before you begin the installation, make sure you have everything needed to complete the
procedure including a USB drive (HDD, SSD, DVD) with the operating system install disk(s).

Important
The operating system installation disk connects to a USB
port. Use an HDD, SSD, or DVD drive containing the
installation disk(s) capable of connecting to one of the
USB ports on the VSky H3970.

task 1: unpack the Vsky h3970
The box containing the VSky H3970 should include the items listed below according
to the version that is shipped.
35-35 RAID / 1-70 RAID / 35-35 HBA (non-RAID) / 70-70 HBA (non-RAID)
• VSky H3970 enclosure including CPU, memory, two 2.5” SSD system drives, and
HBA card.
• Seventy 3.5” Hard Disk Drives, each secured to a disk tray and ready for insertion
into the VSky H3970 enclosure. This is packaged separately from the VSky H3970
unit.
• Four power cords (one cord for each power supply)
When you are ready to begin the installation procedure, carefully remove the
enclosure from the shipping container. But do not remove the HDDs in the trays from
the packaging until you are ready to insert them into the enclosure. It is necessary to
remove the chassis cover before you can begin inserting hard disk drives in the trays.
Follow the instructions in Task 2 to remove the chassis cover and insert the HDD trays.
Warning
The electronic components within the VSky
H3970 enclosure are sensitive to damage
from Electro-Static Discharge (ESD).
Observe appropriate precautions at all
times when handling the VSky H3970 or its
subassemblies.

task 2: Install Vsky h3970 In equIpment rack
The VSky H3970 is shipped with no hard disk drives inserted into the enclosure. This is
because it would be far too heavy to safely install it in an equipment rack. The enclosure is
shipped with sliding rails and hardware for installing the VSky H3970 enclosure in an equipment
rack. Printed instructions are included in the packaging of the sliding rail hardware. Follow these
instructions to install the VSky H3970 enclosure in an equipment rack before populating the
enclosure with hard disk drives.
Make sure to place the enclosure in the rack so that the top covers can be removed and the
hard disk trays can be inserted into the enclosure after it is installed in the rack.
Caution
Do not insert the 3.5” hard disk drives in the
VSky H3970 enclosure before installing it in the
rack system.

Rack installation precautions
Cautions
• Do not populate any unit with hard drives until it
has been securely installed in the rack.
• At least two persons are required to safely lift,
place, and attach the unit into a rack system.
• Do not lift or move the unit by the handles, power
supplies or the controller units. Hold the system
itself.
• Do not install the unit into a rack without rails to
support the system.
• Onlyaqualiedtechnicianwhoisfamiliarwith
the installation procedure should mount and
install the unit.
• Mount the rails to the rack using the appropriate
screwsandangenuts,fullytightened,ateach
end of the rail.
• Do not load the rails unless they are installed with
screws as instructed.
• The rails available for the PROMISE VSky H3970
unit are designed to safely support that PROMISE
VSky H3970 unit when properly installed.
Additional loading on the rails is at the customer’s
risk.
• PROMISE Technology, Inc. cannot guarantee that
the mounting rails will support your PROMISE VSky
H3970 unit unless you install them as instructed
in the printed instructions packed with the rail
hardware.

task 3: Insert hdds
Followtheinstructionsbelowtorstremovethechassiscover,thenyoucanunpacktheHDDs
in the disk trays and insert them into available bays in the VSky H3970 enclosure. Finally you can
replace the chassis cover to complete the HDD assembly insertion procedure.

1. Release the screw on the top front chassis cover.
2. Slide the front cover horizontally to the front and remove it along the direction of the arrow.

4. Slide the rear cover horizontally to the front and remove it along the direction of the arrow.

Insert HDD trays
Follow the instructions below to insert each HDD assembly into empty bays in the VSky H3970
enclosure.
1. Carefully insert the HDD assembly into the HDD bay with the lever lifted until it completely
enters the HDD bay.
2. Push the lever back in place.

Make sure that the HDD is connected to the HDD
connector on the backplane.

Replace the chassis cover
1. Locate the top rear chassis cover on the chassis as shown below and then slide it to the
back until it is closed.

3. Locate the top front cover on the chassis as shown below and then slide it to the back until
it is closed and connected with the rear chassis cover in place.

4. Secure the front chassis cover with one screw.

Caution
This system must be operated with the chassis cover
installed to ensure proper cooling.

task 4: connect keyboard, monItor and usb drIVe
Now connect a keyboard, monitor so you can use the BIOS interface, and USB drive with the
OS install disk:
• Connect a monitor to the VGA port on the number 1 motherboard (labeled MB1 in the
illustration below).
• Connect a USB keyboard to either USB port on the number 1 motherboard.
• Connect the bootable drive containing the OS installation to the remaining USB port.

task 5: connect power supplIes
The VSky H3970 enclosure includes four 1200W power supplies located on the back on the
device.InordertoaccesstheBIOSSetupUtilityforinitialcongurationitisnecessarytoconnect
the power supplies.* However it is not necessary to power on the system yet. Access to the
BIOS Setup Utility is provided using the Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) management
interface. Once these initial BIOS settings are in place, you can power on the system and install
the operating system and then the drivers for the HBA card, RAID controller and other hardware
drivers and software utilities according to the requirements of the operating system installed.

* The BMC management interface only requires one power supply be connected to function. However,
before you power on the server, make sure you connect all power supplies.

task 6: use bIos setup utIlIty
TheBIOSSetupUtilityiforthemotherboardsembeddedintheashROM,soyoucanrunit
with or without the operating system.
After you power on the machine, it will go through the following steps:
1. Enter the BIOS of motherboard and display information on the screen.
You will be prompted to press the <Del> key to enter the BIOS Utility. Ignore this prompt,
wait for the machine to initialize the device.
2. After a few seconds, it will enter the BIOS for the HDD controller automatically and display
information on the screen.
You can either press <Ctrl>+Hto enter the BIOS Utility of the HDD controller in this step or
do nothing and skip this step.
3. The machine will reset automatically and enter the BIOS of motherboard again. BIOS
information is displayed on the screen.
Now you can press <Del> key for entering BIOS Utility.
If you need to begin again from the start, just press the Reset button on the motherboard (see
illustration on next page) and wait for the controller boot up to begin again.
When the BIOS Setup Utility for the motherboard appears (see next page), continue to change
theBMCnetworksettings,BootSequenceandSATACongurationasdescribedinthepagesthat
follow.

Congure BMC network settings
Change the network IP settings for remote access to the BMC controller via the Ethernet port.
1. Use the arrow keys to select Server Mgmt and press <Enter> to enter the Server
Management menu.
2. From the Server Management menu, select BMC network conguration and press
<Enter>.
3. CongurenetworksettingsfortheBMCnetworkinterfaceaccordingtoyourpreference.
The options are Dynamic, Static and Keep Current settings.
4. Press <Esc>toexittheBMCnetworkcongurationmenuandreturntotheServer
Management menu.

Congure Boot Sequence
Make sure the USB drive with the OS installation disk is connected and running. Then change
the boot sequence.
1. Use the arrow keys to select Boot and press <Enter> to enter the Boot Conguration
menu.
2. Under Boot Option Priorities, select Boot Option #1 and press <Enter>.
3. Choose the USB port with the OS installation drive, it will be automatically detected, and
press <Enter>.

Congure SATA Settings
Finally, you must enable Hot Plugging for the two system disks and enable a RAID1
congurationforsystemdriveredundancy.
1. Use the arrow keys to select Advanced and press <Enter> to enter the Advanced menu.
2. Select SATA conguration and press <Enter>.
3. Select SATA Mode and press <Enter>.
4. Choose the RAID Mode option.
5. Select Port 0 Hot Plug and choose the Enabled option.
6. Select Port 1 Hot Plug and choose the Enabled option.
7. Press <F4> to Save and Exit. This will save the BIOS settings changes and reboot the
controller
