INTRODUCTION
The plate compactor is designed to compact granular soils,
crushed aggregate, asphalt and other materials. Ideal for
smaller jobs like trenches, retaining walls and other tight areas
that don't require as much compaction. Heavy duty shock
mounts provide vibration isolation to the engine and
components helping prevent component wear and reduces
operator stress and fatigue. Lifting hook for easy handling and
placement.

A separate manual for the gasoline engine is included with
the plate compactor. Please read the engine instruction
manual before using this product. The engine instruction
manual is considered accurate when information about the
engine disagrees with this manual.

WORK AREA
1. Operate in a safe work environment. Keep your work area
clean, well lit and free of distractions.
2. Keep anyone not wearing the appropriate safety
equipment away from the work area.
3. Store tools properly in a safe and dry location. Keep tools
out of the reach of children.
4. Do not install or use in the presence of flammable gases,
dust or liquids.
PERSONAL SAFETY
WARNING! Wear personal protective equipment approved by
the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) or American
National Standards Institute (ANSI).
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
1. Always wear impact safety goggles that provide front and
side protection for the eyes. Eye protection equipment
should comply with CSA Z94.3-07 or ANSI Z87.1 standards
based on the type of work performed.
2. Wear gloves that provide protection based on the work
materials or to reduce the effects of tool vibration.
3. Non-skid footwear is recommended to maintain footing
and balance in the work environment.
4. Wear protective clothing designed for the work
environment and tool.
5. Wear steel toe footwear or steel toe caps to prevent a foot
injury from falling objects.
6. Wear a NIOSH approved respirator when working on
materials that produce hazardous fumes, dust or
particulate matter.
7. This tool can cause hearing damage. Wear hearing
protection gear with an appropriate Noise Reduction
Rating to withstand the decibel levels.

PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS
Control the tool, personal movement and the work
environment to avoid personal injury or damage to the tool.
1. Do not operate any tool when tired or under the influence
of drugs, alcohol or medications.
2. Avoid wearing clothes or jewelry that can become
entangled with the moving parts of a tool. Keep long hair
covered or bound.
3. Do not overreach when operating the tool. Proper footing
and balance enables better control in
unexpected situations.
4. Securely hold this tool using both hands. Using a tool with
only one hand can result in loss of control.
SPECIFIC SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
WARNING! DO NOT let comfort or familiarity with product
(gained from repeated use) replace strict adherence to the
tool safety rules. If you use this tool unsafely or incorrectly,
you can suffer serious personal injury.
1. Use the correct tool for the job. This tool was designed for
a specific function. Do not modify or alter this tool or use it
for an unintended purpose.
2. Do not operate the tool if the safety guards are missing.
3. Do not allow anyone to stand next to the plate compactor
while it is in operation. The compactor’s plate can cause a
serious injury.
4. Before operation, the operator has to be made
familiar with the necessary safety precautions and
operating techniques.
5. All users must understand the operation of all controls and
learn how to stop the engine quickly in case of emergency.
5.1 Become familiar with the machine’s controls and all the
caution, warning and danger decals affixed to the
machine before attempting to start or operate.

6. The engine and exhaust are hot during operation.
Severe thermal burns can occur on contact, especially
with the muffler.
6.1 Remove accumulated debris from the muffler and
cylinder area. Combustible debris, such as leaves,
grass, brush, etc. can catch fire if they come in contact
with a hot engine.
6.2 Do not place anything on the engine while it is running.
6.3 Allow the muffler, engine cylinder and fins to cool
before touching grass-covered or brush-covered
unimproved land.
7. Always operate this equipment with all guard and safety
devices in place. Never operate this machine if any guard
or safety devices have been removed or if they have
malfunctioned.
8. Do not insert your hand or finger between the pulley cover
and engine during operation to avoid injury to your hand.
9. Never operate the plate compactor with the belt cover
removed. The exposed belt and pulley may cause serious
injury when the tool is in use.
10. Never leave the machine unattended while running as
it will move on its own. Move the throttle lever to low
gear and shut the plate compactor’s engine off before
leaving the area.
11. Do not use on steep slopes, as the tool can topple over.
VIBRATION PRECAUTIONS
1. This tool vibrates during use. Repeated or long-term
exposure to vibration may cause temporary or permanent
physical injury, particularly to the hands, arms and
shoulders.
2. Anyone using vibrating tools regularly or for an extended
period should first be examined by a doctor and then have
regular medical check-ups to ensure medical problems are
not being caused by or worsened from tool use.

3. If you feel any medical symptoms related to vibrations
(such as tingling, numbness, and white or blue fingers),
seek medical attention as soon as possible.
4. DO NOT use this tool if one of the following applies:

4.2 Impaired blood circulation to the hands
4.3 Past hand injuries
4.4 Nervous system disorders
4.5 Diabetes
4.6 Raynaud's Disease
5. Do not smoke while operating the tool. Nicotine reduces
the blood flow to the hands and fingers, increasing the risk
of vibration-related injury.
6. Wear suitable gloves to reduce the effects of vibration.
7. Use the tool with the least amount of vibration, when there
is a choice between different processes.
8. Do not use for extended periods. Take frequent breaks
when using this tool.
9. Let the tool do the work. Grip the tool as lightly as possible
(while still keeping safe control of it).
10. To reduce vibrations, maintain the tool as explained in
this manual. If abnormal vibrations occur, stop using this
tool immediately.
CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING
WARNING! Never start or run this engine indoors as exhaust
contains carbon monoxide gas. Opening windows and doors
is not enough to ventilate the area.
Carbon monoxide is a colourless and odourless gas that is
difficult to detect. Carbon monoxide poisoning results from
inhalation of the gas and may be lethal if left untreated.
Evacuate all people to an area with clean air and seek
immediate medical attention for any person experiencing the
following symptoms:

1. Headache
2. Confusion
3. Shortness of breath
4. Weakness
5. Fatigue
6. Dizziness

UNPACKING
WARNING! Do not operate the tool if any part is missing.
Replace the missing part before operating. Failure to do so
could result in a malfunction and personal injury.
Remove the parts and accessories from the packaging and
inspect for damage. Make sure that all items in the parts list
are included.

OPERATION
IMPORTANT! Before digging or compacting, contact
your local utilities to determine the location of buried
pipes or cables.
The plate compactor can compact loose soil, sand, gravel,
asphalt and broken concrete. Soils with a high clay content are
not recommended for compacting with this tool, but it can be
done with the proper technique (see Compacting High Clay
Content Soil).
The tool vibrates the surface through the base plate,
forcing the soil/gravel into a smaller physical space. The
surface material must be loose enough to allow movement
during compaction. Some surfaces may require preparation
before compacting.
A surface that is too hard can cause the tool to bounce instead
of compact. This may damage the tool or cause a vibration
injury over time due to repeated exposure. A bouncing plate
compactor indicates the material is compact. Add another
layer of material if building up a compacted area.
PREPARING THE SURFACE
1. Dry Surface – A dry surface will produce dust during
compaction. Sprinkle water over soil and allow it to soak in,
before resuming compaction. Only sprinkle enough water
on gravel to keep the dust down. This will extend the life of
the engine’s air filter.
2. Wet Surface – Soil that is too wet may stick to the base plate.
The sticking soil will then compact onto the tool and cause
excess weight that can put more stress on the engine. It will
also prevent the proper compaction of the soil surface. Dry
the surface or wait until it is suitable for compaction.
3. Asphalt - Wet the asphalt surface and base plate of the tool
to prevent the asphalt from sticking during compaction.
Dampen the surface and base plate as needed.

4. Stones/Broken Concrete – Remove large stones or chunks
of concrete as the compactor does not break these apart.
Larger stones and broken concrete may not compact as
much as expected. Compaction is more effective with
smaller objects.
5. Obstacles – A work site may have natural obstacles
(stump, buried stones) or manmade obstacles
(construction waste, power cords or hoses) that
will interfere with the compacting process. Check
the work area and remove all obstacles before
beginning compacting.
OPERATING THE PLATE COMPACTOR
The plate compactor is started with the throttle lever (#F6) in
low gear. The power bypasses the centrifugal clutch and the
base plate does not vibrate.
Once the throttle lever is opened, the base plate begins to
vibrate. As the vibrator rotary shaft (#D12) rotates, the
centrifugal force ‘throws’ the base plate forward. This motion
pulls the tool forward without effort. As the throttle lever is
opened further, the centrifugal force increases in strength and
frequency. This results in deeper compaction and the tool
moves faster.
This unit can only travel forward. Plan your compacting route
to allow forward turns, if the compacting next to a structure
such as a wall.
WARNING! Maintain a grip on the tool at all times when under
power, as it will move by itself when the throttle is open and
may pose an injury risk to bystanders and the operator.
1. Check the plate compactor before use (see Maintenance
Chart - Daily before operating)
1.1 Check the gasoline engine before use per the separate
engine instruction manual.
2. Position the throttle lever in low gear.

3. Start the gasoline engine per instructions in the engine
instruction manual.
4. Hold the compactor handle (#F1) and move the throttle
lever towards high gear. The vibrator assembly will engage
and the compactor will begin to move forward.
5. Retain a hold of the handle and guide the tool as it
compacts. Inclines may require a gentle pressure to
maintain forward momentum (see Compacting on
an Incline).
6. Watch for obstacles in the tool’s work path that can create
a dangerous hazard or may damage the tool. Move the
throttle lever to low gear and wait for it to stop moving
before removing the obstacle. Turn the tool off and move
to a safe location if the object will require more than a few
seconds to remove.
7. The surface may require 3 or 4 passes to achieve full
compaction. The type of surface material will determine
how many passes are needed. The tool will begin to
bounce when the material is compact.
8. Move the throttle lever to low gear once a pass is complete
to disengage the vibrator assembly. Reposition the tool for
another pass and repeat steps 4 and 5.
9. Move the throttle lever to low gear once the job is
complete and wait until the tool stops vibrating. Shut the
engine off per the engine instruction manual instructions
and allow it to cool.
9.1 Let the engine idle for several minutes before shutting
it off if the compactor was used for a length of time
or the job was hard on the equipment. This will allow
a gradual cooling of the engine components
without damage.
COMPACTING HIGH CLAY CONTENT SOIL
A dry intermediary material may be used to cover the soil
surface to prevent the soil from sticking to the compactor’s
base plate.

1. To compact soil with a high clay content, reduce speed
so the compactor’s base plate is still vibrating, but not
leaving the surface. This will require the operator to
push the compactor more to account for the loss of
natural momentum.
2. Check underneath the base plate and remove all material
that is stuck after each pass or more often if required.
3. Double the number of passes to compact the soil as the
plate compactor is not at full power.
COMPACTING ON AN INCLINE
WARNING! Never stand below the plate compactor when
using on an incline as it may topple and cause a serious
injury. When changing direction, always remain uphill.
WARNING! Stop compacting immediately if the tool is
difficult to control on an incline. The tool may topple and
cause a serious injury to the operator or bystanders.
The incline cannot exceed a 20° angle. There may be a risk
that the tool will topple during compaction. The angle will
also prevent the oil lubrication system from operating
correctly and damage the engine.
1. The best method of compacting on an incline is starting at
the top and moving down the incline.
2. Adjust the speed that the compactor moves with the
throttle (#E6), until it is comfortable.
3. At the slope’s bottom, move the throttle (#E6) to idle
speed to stop the base plate from vibrating.
4. Pull the plate compactor to the top of the incline and fully
open the throttle to start the base plate vibrating. Resume
the soil compacting.
4.1 The optional wheel assembly will make it easier to pull
the plate compactor up the incline.
5. A shallow incline may allow compacting from
side-to-side, moving down the incline as each section
is complete. In this case, compacting on an incline may

require the operator to lightly push the tool to maintain
forward momentum.
CARE & MAINTENANCE
1. Maintain the tool with care. A tool in good condition is
efficient, easier to control and will have fewer problems.
2. Inspect the tool components periodically. Repair or replace
damaged or worn components. Only use identical
replacement parts when servicing.
3. Follow instructions for lubricating and
changing accessories.
4. Keep the tool handles clean, dry and free from oil/grease
at all times.
5. Maintain the tool’s labels and name plates. These carry
important information. If unreadable or missing, contact
Princess Auto Ltd. for replacements.
6. Have the plate compactor inspected at least once a year.
7. Consult the engine instruction manual for engine care and
maintenance steps.
WARNING! Only qualified service personnel should repair the
tool. An improperly repaired tool may present a hazard to the
user and/or others.

LUBRICATION
Inspect and lubricate the tool when required. Use grease to
lubricate the tool. Other lubricants may not be suitable and
could damage the tool or cause a malfunction during use.
VIBRATOR SYSTEM LUBRICATION
The tool’s vibrator housing (#D13) contains the vibrator rotary
shaft (#D12) that causes the base plate to move. The vibrator
housing contains extreme pressure oil to bathe the rotary shaft
during operation.
Replace the oil every 300 hours with 150 cc of SAE 80W90
Multigear GL-5 Oil (SKU 8003027).

1. Remove the vibrator oil gauge (#D14) from the vibrator
rotary housing.
2. Confirm the oil is level with the opening.
3. Top up with oil if low.
4. Replace vibrator oil gauge.
REPLACING VIBRATOR SYSTEM OIL
1. Run tool briefly to mix and warm the oil.
2. Remove the vibrator oil gauge from the vibrator
rotary housing.
3. Place a receptacle below the opening to catch the
waste oil.
4. Tip the tool enough to empty the oil out of the vibrator
rotary housing.
5. Refill the vibrator rotary housing with an extreme pressure
oil until it is level with the opening.
6. Replace the vibrator oil gauge.
7. Dispose of the waste oil in accordance with local by-laws.
STORAGE
When not in use for an extended period, apply a thin coat of
lubricant to the steel parts to avoid rust. Remove the lubricant
before using the tool again.
LONG-TERM STORAGE
In case of long period storage for more than 30 days:
1. Remove foreign objects such as loose stones and dirt from
the plate compactor and engine.
2. Drain all the fuel from the fuel tank (see engine instruction
manual for procedure).
3. Clean the engine cylinder cooling fins.
4. Clean or replace the air filter.
5. Change engine oil and follow procedures described in the
engine instruction manual for engine storage.
6. Store the plate compactor in a clean, dry area. Cover it up
with dry cloth for storage.

TRANSPORTATION
WARNING! Transport the plate compactor with an empty
fuel tank or with the fuel shut-off valve secured in the
OFF position.
1. Allow the engine to cool before transporting to prevent
burn injuries or a fire hazard.
2. Do not attempt to load the plate compactor onto a
vehicle by yourself. Use a crane or additional people to
assist in loading/unloading. The tool is heavy and may
cause a back injury.
3. Do not hold the plate compactor by the handle while
loading as it may swing open and cause an impact injury.
4. Secure the tool upright to prevent it from moving or
toppling over during transportation. The tool is heavy
and can cause a crushing injury if it falls over onto the
user or a bystander.
5 Transport the tool in the upright position. Turn all valves to
the OFF position. Ensure all caps are in place and sealed
tight to prevent spills if it should fall over during
transportation.
5.1 Remove fuel from the engine’s fuel tank when possible
before transportation.
6. Do not transport with the engine’s spark plug facing down.
Transporting with the spark plug down will result in hard
starting and/or engine smoking.
DISPOSAL
Recycle a tool damaged beyond repair at the appropriate facility.
Contact your local municipality for a list of disposal facilities
or by-laws for electronic devices, batteries, oil or other
toxic liquids.
IMPORTANT! DO NOT pollute the environment by allowing
uncontrolled discharge of waste oil.

TROUBLESHOOTING
Visit a Princess Auto Ltd. location for a solution if the tool does
not function properly or parts are missing. If unable to do so,
have a qualified technician service the tool.
