C.SYSTEMSETUP
1. InstalltheTurret 6inyourspectrometer.(Itmayhavebeenalreadyinstalledbythe
manufacturer.)
2. SupplycirculatingwatertothePeltierunit.IfyoupurchasedtheBATH10,thenattachtubing
fromthesubmersiblepumptoeitheroneofthewaterhosebarbsontheTurret 6.Attach
anotherpieceoftubingfromtheTurret 6backtothebucket.Putwaterinthebucket,turn
onthepumpbypluggingitintoanoutletandchecktobesurethatwaterisflowingbackinto
thebucket.Checkforleaks.Unplugthepumpuntilyouhavecompletedtheremainderof
thesystemsetup.
3. Ifyouplantoworkatlowtemperatures,connectasourceofdrygas(typicallynitrogen)to
releaseonthecuvettewindows.Attachalengthoftubingwith1/16‐inchinsidediameter,to
thesmallhosebarbonthebaseoftheTurret 6.(A1/8to1/16‐inchbarbedreducerfitting
isincludedwiththeTurret 6,topreventanydifficultyconnectingtothisunusuallysmallsize
tubing.)Setthedrygasflowratetoabout50cc/min.
4. TheTurret 6hastwoelectricalcables,onefordrivecurrentsandtheotherfor
sensitivesensorsignals.ConnectthemtothebackoftheTC1TemperatureController
onthe15‐pinconnectorslabeled“Sample”and“reference”.
5. PlugthepowercableintothebackoftheTC1TemperatureControllerandintoawallsocket.
(TheTC1willacceptACvoltagesfrom85to264at50or60Hz.)

1.IfyoupurchasedtheT‐AppprogramforexternalcontroloftheTurret 6,inserttheCDinto
thedrive.Iftheinstallationdoesnotstartautomatically,locatetheSetup.exefileintheroot
directoryandrunit.Theinstallationprocessstartswithasmallblackwindowthatisshown
duringinstallationofthedriversneededtocontroltheTurret 6throughaUSBconnection.
Thiswindowwillthenbereplacedbythesoftwareinstallationwindow.Followtheonscreen
promptstocompletetheinstallation.
2.ConnecttheTurret 6toyourcomputerusingtheUSBcableprovided.TheNewHardware
installationprocesswillbeginautomaticallyandtakeafewmomentstofinish.
E.SYSTEMOPERATION
1. Usealiquidsamplesinstandard1x1‐cmsquarecuvettesandplacethecuvettesinthe
Turret 6.
2. Placethemagneticstirbarineachcuvette.

3. Ifyouwishtomonitorthetemperatureinsideacuvette,plugastandardSeries400orSeries
500thermistorprobe(notprovided)intothe¼‐inchphonejacklabeled“probe”intheback
paneloftheTC1.Placetheendoftheprobeinaregionofthesolution,whereitwillnot
occludethespectrometerlightbeam.
4. Turnonthecirculatingwater.
5. TurnontheTC1controllerusingtheswitchonthebackpanel.

arrowsontheMenuButtontocyclethroughthefivepagesofoptions,Display(thedefault
screen),SetTemperature,SetStirring,SetRamping,andSetPosition.Forexample,from
theDisplaypage,pushtheleftarrowoncetogettotheSetPositionpage.Oncethere,use
thetopandbottomarrowstochooseaposition,e.g.position5.PresstheSETbutton.The
cuvetteholderwillmovetoposition5andthemenuwillreturntotheDisplaypage.Toseta
temperature,presstherightarrowoncetogototheSetTemperaturepage.Oncethere,use
theupanddownarrowstosetatargettemperature,e.g.37.0°C.PressSETtoinitiate
temperaturecontrol.Thetemperaturewillriseandstabilize,indicatedbythechangeinthe
greenLEDlightonthefrontpanelfromflashingtosteady.Tocontrolstirring,gototheSet
Stirringpage.Usetheupanddownarrowstosetaspeed,e.g.1200rpm,andpressSETto
startthestirrer.MoredetailsontheMenuButtonareprovidedinSection2below.
7. Aftermeasurementsarecompleted,turnoffpoweronthebackoftheTC1controllerand
turnoffthewatersource.

Usetherightandleftarrowstocyclethroughfivepages:

Display:ThismainpageshowstheactualcuvetteHoldertemperature,theTargettemperatureanda
Probetemperature(ifaprobeispresent).ThepagealsoshowswhethertheRampandStirfunctions
areonoroff,andtheidentityofthecuvettePositionNumber(POSn,n=1to6)currentlyinthelight
pathway.Afterafewsecondsofinactivity,allotherpageswillrevertbacktotheDisplaypage.
Whenseekingatemperature,thegreenLEDonthefrontpanelwillflashslowly.Whenithaslocked
ontoanewtargettemperature,thegreenLEDwillremainlit.ArapidlyflashingredLEDusually
meansalooseelectricalcableorinadequatewaterflowforthePeltierunit.
Note:PressingtheSETbuttonwhiletheDisplaypageisactiveresultsinnoaction.Tostartorstop
controllerfunctions,accessthefourotherpages,SetTemperature–SetStirring–SetRamping
–SetPosition.
SetTemperature
SetTemperature:TosettheTargettemperature,usetheupanddownarrows.PressSETtoretain
thisnewTargetandinitiatetemperaturecontrol.ThegreenLEDlightwillbeginflashingslowlyasthe
deviceseeksthetargetedtemperature,andthepagewindowwillshowtheCurrenttobeON.

SetStirring
SetStirring:ToturnonmagneticStirring,usetheupanddownarrowstochooseanapproximate
stirringspeedbetween1and2500rpm.PressSETtosetthespeedandinitiatestirring.Thepage
willupdatetoshowtheCurrentvaluetobethesameasStirspeed.
DiscontinueStirring:PressSETwhiletheStirringison(shownbynonzeroCurrentrpm)toturnthe
stirreroff.ThepagewillupdatetoshowtheCurrentspeedtobeOff.
SetRamping
SetRamping:Toperformatemperatureramp,settheRamprateusingtheupanddownarrows,
andpressSET.ThepagewillupdatetoshowtheCurrentratein°/mintobethesameastheRamp
rate.Withrampingset,turningontemperaturecontrolwillgeneratealinearramptothetarget
temperature.Whenthesampleholderreachesthetargettemperature,nofurthertemperature
changeoccurs,althoughtheCurrentratewillremainasset.
Thefastestpossiblerampisdeterminedbyhowfastthecuvetteholdercouldreachthetarget
temperaturewithoutramping.Attemptingtoramptooquickly,especiallyathighandlow
temperatureextremes,willresultinanonlinearramp.Theslowestrampthatmaybesetonthis
pageis0.01°C/minute.(Ifneeded,muchslowerrampsmaybesetthroughsoftwarecommands.)
DiscontinueRamping:PressSETwhiletheRampison(shownbynonzeroCurrent°/min)toturn

A.GENERALDESCRIPTION
TheTurret 6hasarotating,temperature‐controlled,cuvettetowerwhichholdsuptosixcuvettes.
Thecenterofthetowerishollow,permittinglighttopassintotheentrancehole,throughthetower,
throughacuvetteandexittheoppositesidefromtheentrance.Aplasticcoverenclosesthecuvette
tower,providingthermalinsulation.Afloorisattachedtothebottomofthecuvettetower,andthe
rotatingbodyoftheholdercontainsaPeltierelementsandwichedbetweenthisfloorandabrass
heatexchanger.Waterisputthroughtheheatexchangertodrawoffheatgeneratedwhenthe
temperateislowered.

barbsforwaterprovideaccesstotheheatexchanger.A1/8‐inchstainlesshosebarbisusedforthe
drygas.Thehosestotheseconnectionsandthepowerandsensorcablemustbebroughtoutofthe
samplecompartmentbyameansthatdoesnotinterferewiththespectroscopicmeasurement.
Accessfortheseutilitiesmayneedtobelighttight.
CAUTION:
Accidentlyattachingawaterlinetothedrygasbarbwillseverelydamagethe
instrument!Attachthelineswithcare.
B.CUVETTEHOLDER
TheTurret 6holdsstandard10x10mmcuvetteswithoutsidedimensionsof12.5x12.5mm.A
metalclipisusedtopusheachcuvetteintooneofthecornersofitsindividualspaceforreproducible
positioningandtofavortemperaturetransfer.WallsoftheTurretbodyarerelievedtoprevent
scratchingoftheopticalsurfacesofthecuvette.
Cuvettesshouldbe45mmortaller,otherwisetheywillbedifficulttorecoverfromthecuvette
holders.
C.CUVETTEZ‐HEIGHT
The“zheight”ofacuvetteisthedistancebetweenthebottomsurfaceofthecuvetteandthe
designedpositionfortheopticalcenterline,wheretheincidentbeamoflightstrikesthecuvette.

E.COOLINGWATERFORTHEPELTIER
ThePeltierelement(or“thermoelectriccooler”)isaheatpump.Whencooling,ittransfersheat
fromtheTurretbodytoaheatexchanger;whenheating,electricalpolarityisreversedandit
transfersheatfromtheheatexchangertothetower.Whencooling,itisparticularlyimportantto
transferthisheatawayfromthePeltier.Thisisaccomplishedwithflowingwaterthroughtheheat
exchanger.
Asourceofwater(orothercoolingfluid)mustbeconnectedtothe⅛‐inchhosebarbsonthebackof
theTurret 6.IfyoupurchasetheBATH10fromus,youwillgetaninexpensivesubmersible
aquariumpump,theappropriatefittingsforconnectingtubing,andaplasticbucket.Connectthe
pumptotheTurret 6,placeitinthebucketwithwater,andrunareturntubetothebucket.Amore
robustpumpisavailableastheBATH100forahigherprice,althoughthelargerpumphasahigher
Wattageandtendstoheatthewaterwhenusedforextendedperiodsoftime.
Youmayalsoprovidethecoolingwaterfromanothersource,suchasarefrigeratedcoolingbathor
evenatapforbriefuse.
Youwillneedaflowof100‐300ml/minute.Thisflowshouldrequireapressureofabout3‐5psi
(0.2‐0.3bar).Donotexceedaninputwaterpressureof25psi(1.7bar),asdamagemayoccurinside
theTurret 6.Theheatexchangerandhosebarbsarebrass,andthetubinginsidetheTurret 6is
vinyl.Besurethatanycirculatingfluidused,otherthanwater,willnotcorrodethesematerials.
ThetemperatureoftheheatexchangerintheTurret 6ismonitoredusingathermistor.Ifthe
temperatureexceeds60°C,thentemperaturecontrolisshutdowntopreventdamagetothePeltier
elementandthewarning,“checkcoolantflow,”displayedontheTC1temperaturecontroller.This
willhappenifthecirculatingfluidgetstoowarmand/orisrestrictedinflow.Theheatexchanger
temperaturemaybeaccessedbycomputerthroughtheRS232orUSBconnectionsonthebackof
theTC1TemperatureController(seeExternalcomputercontrolbelow).
Temperatureincreaseswillbefasterwhenroomtemperaturewaterisusedinthecirculator.
Temperaturedecreaseswillbefasterwhenicewaterisused.Onlywatershouldbecirculatedusing
theBATH10.Whenusingarefrigeratedbath,circulatingpre‐cooledfluids(suchas30%methanolor
dilutedethyleneglycol)atbelow0°Cwillpermitmeasurementsbelowthespecifiedtemperature
range.

F.DRYGASTOMINIMIZECONDENSATION
DrygasflowsintotheTurret 6viathestainless1/8‐inchhosebarbontherearside.Thegaspasses
throughsmallchannelsinthebaseoftheTurretbody,topartiallyequilibrateintemperature,before
passingupthroughsmallholesonboththeinsideandoutsidecuvettesurfaces.Aflowofdrygasto
preventcondensationisnecessaryanytimetheTurret 6iscontrolledbelowthedewpoint
temperaturepresentontheinsideofthesamplecompartmentofthespectrometer.Forambientair,
thiswouldtypicallybeabout5°C.
G.EXTERNALTEMPERATUREPROBE
A¼‐inchphonejacklabeled“Probe”canbefoundonthebackpanelofTC1TemperatureController.
ThisjackwillaccepttheplugonastandardSeries400orSeries500thermistorprobe.Whenaprobe
ispluggedintothejack,theprobetemperatureispresentedonthedisplayoftheTC1.Placethe
probeinasampletomeasuretheactualtemperatureofthesample,whichwilllagintimefromthe
temperatureofthecuvettetower.
Wedonotselltheprobe,buttherearemanySeries400and500probesonthemarket.Quantum
Northwest’spreferredprobeistheYSI423availablefromColeParmer.TheYSI423isreasonably
resistanttoimmersionandrespondsrapidlytotemperaturechanges.Also,thefine,coiledwiresof
theYSI423conductverylittleambientheattothethermistorattheend.
ExcellentSeries500probescanbeobtainedwithdiameterslessthanamm,providingaccesstosmall
volumes.Adisadvantageoftheseprobesisthattheyarenotpre‐calibrated.
H.EXTERNALCOMPUTERCONTROL
AllfunctionsmaybeaccessedeitherthroughaSerial(RS232)oraUSBlocatedonthebackofTC1
TemperatureController.YoumaywriteyourownprogramorpurchaseourapplicationprogramT‐
App.T‐Appwillplottemperaturesoftheprobe,cuvettetoweroreventhePeltierelementheat
exchangervstime.Itwillalsopermityoutosetuptemperatureramps.Ifyouwishtodoyourown
programming,pleaseseetheAppendixforcommunicationinstructionsandthesetoftext
commandsthatmaybeusedandresponsestothecommands.
4.ERRORCODES
Whenerrorsoccur,theline1ofthedisplaypresentsanerrorcode.Line3ofthedisplayidentifies
theerrorandline4ofthedisplaypresentspossiblesolutions.Themostcommoneventsthatcause

Thisdocumentprovidestheserialcommunicationsprotocolsforversion1.0ofthefirmwareonthe
TC1familyofcontrollers:

TC1/Turret6–fortheTurret6,6‐positionturret
TheversionnumberandtheID(seebelow)areshownbrieflyonthedisplaywhenthetemperature
controlleristurnedon.
Allfunctionsofthetemperaturecontrollercanbemanagedfromacomputer,usingthecommand
setdescribedbelow.Ifyoupurchasedyourunitasacomponentofaspectrometerfromcertain
manufacturers,thisfeaturemaybeimplementedthroughtraditionalRS232serialconnectorsonthe
