TRANSFORMER 2 ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS
Please note that the color of parts in your kit may vary from that shown in these instructions. Some pictures may not be the
exact parts of your transformer, but convey the process and what to look for when assembling the kit.
Preparation
1. You will need a clean flat work area 3 to 4 square feet in size.
2. Tools required are a small file, small angled needle nose pliers, and toothpicks.
3. Spray booth or well ventilated and clean area to paint.
4. Area where parts can be set aside without getting dirty or damaged.
5. Carefully remove the contents from the poly bag. Remove the parts from the packing
material. Do NOT open the small bag of detail parts at this time.

Assembly
1. Please note that the transformer design modeled in this kit has many small, fine features, which
are delicate. Hold the panels by the edge to minimize the chance that any of those features
get damaged.
2. Use medium viscosity CA glue only. No other glue will hold the parts together. Only a small
amount of glue is necessary. Place a small amount of glue on the part and spread the CA
with a toothpick so all the joint surface is covered. Error on the side of less glue, as you do not
want glue to ooze out the joints.
3. Lay out the sides and ends around the bottom. The bottom should have the magnets facing
up. The ends and sides are keyed to the bottom, so they will only fit one side correctly.

4. Dry fit the sides and ends with the bottom to ensure a tight a proper fit with each piece. The
corners should not have any gaps. Do not move to the next step until you are satisfied with
the fitting of the parts.
5. Start with one of the sides and the bottom. Place CA on the inside edge of the bottom. Place
the side on the bottom, holding the two parts perpendicular for about 8 seconds.
6. Next dry fit one of the end pieces to make sure the corner with the side fits with no gaps.
7. Apply the CA to the bottom and the edge (where it joins with the previously glued side) of the
end piece and place into position.

8. Now dry fit and glue in the opposite side piece.
9. Dry fit and glue the other side to the assembly.
10. Dry fit the roof and remove. Apply CA to the side of the lip of the roof and replace on the top
of the transformer.
11. Remove the small detail parts from the small bag.
12. On one end shown at left below, dry fit and glue the small U-shaped bracket as shown. The
slots for the bracket are shown below center. Also, glue 3 of the small caps on top of the
hollow cylinders, one of which is shown in place below right.
13. For the opposite end, glue the electrical cabinet in place along with the three small caps.

14. Glue the 6 large and 4 medium sized caps to the corresponding areas on the roof. Then glue
2 medium caps to the top sides, and 1 small cap to each lower side corner as shown.
15. The transformer is ready to prime and paint. We have found priming to be useful in achieving
the best looking paint job, and highly recommend it.
16. Prototype transformers are painted light to medium grey, usually with a semi-gloss finish.
Because there are so many nooks and crannies on the transformers, airbrushing is the only way
to get a good looking paint job. The compressed gas cylinder can be painted yellow, green
or blue.
17. Once the paint is dry, dry fit the gas cylinder by placing through the U-shaped bracket to seat
on the small pin of the bottom bracket as shown below. Now raise the cylinders about ¼” and
place a small drop of CA on the pin on the bottom bracket. Lower the cylinder down on the
pin.

18. The transformer is now ready to place on your Railfan Models KRL 325 Ton heavy duty flat car.
